This game begins UCLA s 88th season of football. The Bruins are overall in openers. UCLA bested San Diego State by a score of 44-21, in Qualcomm Stadium, in last season s opener on Sept. 3, THE 25TH YEAR The 2006 season marks the 25th year that the Rose Bowl has served as the home of the Bruins. UCLA moved from the L.A. Coliseum in the summer of 1982 and went in that first year, capping the season with a victory over Michigan in the Rose Bowl game. The Bruins own a record of since moving to Pasadena, including a 3-2 record in Rose Bowl games. UCLA is 14-4 under head coach Karl Dorrell, including 6-0 in THEN AND NOW UCLA finished the 2005 season with a record of 10-2, 6-2 (third place) in Pac-10. A comefrom-behind victory over Northwestern in the Vitalis Sun Bowl, capped off a remarkable season. UCLA trailed by 22 points in the first quarter before engineering the largest comeback in school history. It marked the fifth time in 2005 that the Bruins rallied from a double-digit deficit. The Vitalis Sun Bowl appearance marked the eighth time in the last nine seasons that the Bruins concluded the regular season qualified to play in a bowl. The 10-win season was the seventh in UCLA history. The Bruins concluded the season ranked No. 13 by USA Today/Coaches and No. 16 by Associated Press. Overall UCLA welcomes back five starters on offense, seven on defense and its two kicking specialists for the 2006 season. On offense, the Bruins return players who caught a total of 20 touchdown passes last season and rushers who totaled over 1,000 yards. Six offensive linemen who earned at least one starting assignment a season ago are also back. The tentative offensive depth chart shows just one position (quarterback) without at least one game started by a returning player last season. On defense, just the right cornerback position is without 2005 starting experience. In addition, the Bruins also expect the return to action of 2004 starting wide receiver Junior Taylor and defensive tackle Kevin Brown. Taylor went down with a knee injury in the third game of 2005 and missed the balance of the season. Brown injured his ankle in a pre-season scrimmage and did not play in Key losses from last year s squad include: leading receiver and Mackey Tight End Award winner Marcedes Lewis (first round pick of Jacksonville Jaguars); quarterback Drew Olson (school record 34 TD passes, 8th in the Heisman Trophy balloting; Baltimore Ravens camp); running back/return man Maurice Drew (leading rusher, NCAA punt return record, second round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars); offensive linemen Mike McCloskey, Ed Blanton and Robert Cleary, each multi-year starters; linebacker Spencer Havner (two-time leading tackler, Redskins camp); cornerback Marcus Cassel (starter in all 12 games in 2005, Panthers camp) and strong safety Jarrad Page (second on team in tackles, seventh round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs). HONORARY TEAM CAPTAIN Former UCLA and NFL great James Washington will serve as the honorary UCLA team captain for the Utah game. Washington was a four-year starter at free safety for the Bruins As a redshirt freshman, he earned Defensive MVP honors in the 1985 Fiesta Bowl. A second-team All-American, he still ranks third in UCLA history with 15 career interceptions and sixth in career tackles (347). A fifth-round pick in the 1988 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams, he played eight years in the NFL, the first two with the Rams, five with Dallas, helping the Cowboys win two Super Bowls and one with the Redskins. He is now a business man and also hosts a talk show for Fox Sports Radio. FAN ZONE For all Bruin home games fans should plan on arriving in the Arroyo Seco early to avoid traffic and picnic at the Rose Bowl. UCLA is sponsoring the Fan Zone in Area H. The Fan Zone contains the AM 570 stage, where fans can watch and hear the Bruin pre-game radio show. It also includes the Food Zone, which includes the following restaurants: American Pretzel, Carl s Jr., Teri and Yaki, Funnel Cakes Etc, Baja Grill, Now You re Poppin, PSI Drinks, Robin s Wood Fire BBQ & Grill, Gourmey Cobbler Factory and Just Chokes. ACADEMICS Thirty members of this year s Bruin football squad were listed on the Athletics Director s Honor Roll for the Spring 06 quarter. To qualify, student-athletes had to post at least a 3.0 grade point average. Fifteen of the 19 members of Karl Dorrell s first recruiting class (2003) are still in the program and on track to graduate. In fact, 54 of the 59 freshmen in Dorrell s first three classes are still in the program and progressing towards a degree. The UCLA football program has produced 16 NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship winners, 14 first-team Academic All-Americans, eight National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients, one Rhodes Scholar and three members of the Academic All-America Hall of Fame. Offensive guard Chris Joseph was selected to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District-8 team. Joseph and defensive tackle Kenneth Lombard were named firstteam Pac-10 All-Academic. According to the NFL, UCLA was first among Pac-10 schools with 25 active players on 2005 opening weekend National Football League rosters. UCLA ranked 15th among all universities. During the last 24 years, UCLA has been ranked in the final Associated Press Top 25 on 12 occasions, tied with USC for the most among Pac-10 schools. Washington is next with 10 rankings. FRESHMEN Nine true freshmen played in the opener against San Diego State -- RB Kahlil Bell, LB Kyle Bosworth, LB John Hale, WR Gavin Ketchum, S Robert Kibble, S Bret Lockett, DL Chase Moline, TE Ryan Moya and TE Logan Paulsen. Twenty-six true freshmen have now played for the Bruins during Karl Dorrell s three years as head coach ( ). A school-record 12 true freshmen played for the Bruins in 2004 and five in BRUIN HEAD COACH KARL DORRELL The 2005 Pac-10 co-coach of the Year, Karl Dorrell is entering his fourth season (22-15 overall, in Pac-10 play) as the 15th head coach in UCLA history. In 2005, the Bruins compiled a record of 10-2 and finished the season with a victory in the Sun Bowl. They won their first eight games of the year and were ranked as high as No. 5 by the BCS and No. 7 on the Associated Press poll. A Bruin team won at least 10 games for only the seventh time in school history. Dorrell was a finalist for several national Coach of the Year awards. Dorrell returned to Westwood, where he played on teams that won five consecutive bowl games, after serving as an assistant coach at both the collegiate and professional levels. He is the first UCLA coach to go to bowls in each of his first three seasons. He came to UCLA after working the previous three seasons for Mike Shanahan s Denver Broncos as an assistant coach in charge of wide receivers. Prior to his arrival in Denver, Dorrell coached 12 years on the collegiate level, including seven seasons as an offensive coordinator. During his career as a collegiate player and coach, Dorrell has participated in 15 bowl games, including three Rose Bowls, two Fiesta Bowls and two Cotton Bowls. His 108 receptions still rank No. 11 (tied) on UCLA s career list and his total of 1,517 receiving yards rank No

7 Dorrell s previous collegiate coaching experience includes six seasons at Colorado, two years at Northern Arizona, and one year each at UCLA, Washington, Arizona State and Central Florida. He became receivers coach at Central Florida the next season and moved on to Northern Arizona for the 1990 and 1991 seasons as offensive coordinator and receivers coach. He then embarked on the first of two stints at Colorado. Dorrell served as receivers coach in the seasons. During that tenure, receivers Charles Johnson and Michael Westbrook, became just the fourth pair of wideouts on the same team in NCAA history to accumulate more than 1,000 yards in the same season. Dorrell returned to the Pac-10 for the 1994 season as receivers coach at Arizona State before going back to Colorado for the campaigns as offensive coordinator and receivers coach. The Buffaloes won three bowl games in that fouryear span and were victorious in 33 of 47 games. He spent the 1999 season at Washington, serving as offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. The former Bruin then moved to the professional ranks and served as receiving coach with the Broncos from 2000 until the time he took the UCLA job on December 18, WIDE RECEIVERS Redshirt senior JUNIOR TAYLOR missed virtually the entire 2005 season after surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered on the second play (a 16-yard reception) of the Oklahoma game.
