2015 FOOTBALL NOTES / SOUTHERN ILLINOIS GAME SEPT. 12 Series History Southeast and Southern Illinois meet for the 83rd time in The Redhawks, who have played SIU more than any other opponent in their football history, own a advantage in a series that dates all the way back to However, the Salukis won eight of the last nine matchups between these teams and look to keep their current four-game winning streak in the series alive. Southeast, which is against SIU at Missouri National Guard Field/ Houck Stadium, has not beaten the Salukis in Cape Girardeau since Additionally, the Redhawks haven t won against SIU since their Ohio Valley Conference championship and NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoff season in Southeast upset the then-no. 5 Salukis, 24-21, in Carbondale that year. Big Stage The Redhawks and Salukis each kicked off their respective 2015 seasons against Football Bowl Subdivision teams on the road. Southeast fell to #24 Missouri, 34-3, and SIU dropped a heartbreaker to Indiana. Both of those games were on Sept. 5. The Salukis pulled to within a point when Jimmy Jones made a leaping touchdown catch with 18 seconds left. SIU went for the two-point conversion and the win, but Mark Iannotti s pass went through the arms of Connor Iwema. Stacked Schedule Four ranked teams are part of a strong schedule for Southeast in The Redhawks kicked off the season at #24 Missouri (Sept. 5) and square off against #21 Indiana State (Sept. 19), #19 Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 17) and #5/6 Jacksonville State (Nov. 14) later in the year. Southeast is 4-22 against ranked Football Championship Subdivision (4-19) and Football Bowl Subdivision (0-3) teams combined since Tom Matukewicz is the only head coach in the school s football history that has led the Redhawks to two wins over ranked opponents in the same season. That happened when Southeast took down then-# 3 Southeastern Louisiana (24-23) and #20 Tennessee State during Matukewicz s head coaching debut in Matukewicz vs. Southern Illinois Tom Matukewicz is 0-1 against Southern Illinois as a head coach. Southeast fell to then- #14 SIU, 50-23, in Carbondale during the third week of the 2014 season. SIU Connections The Southern Illinois game is always going to mean something more to head coach Tom Matukewicz, defensive coordinator Bryce Saia and offensive coordinator Sherard Poteete. Matukewicz spent seven seasons under head coach Jerry Kill at SIU. As linebackers coach and run-game coordinator, Matukewicz had a big hand in three Missouri Valley Football championships (2003, 2004, 2005) and five NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoff berths (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007). He was named the 2007 FCS Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association after helping turn the Salukis into one of the top rushing defenses in the nation. Saia and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Sherard Poteete also have Southern Illinois connections. Saia coached the defensive line for four years ( ). The Salukis ranked either first or second in the MVFC during his tenure, and had the top-ranked scoring defense in the FCS in Saia was also with Matukewicz at Toledo for two seasons. Poteete was named the 1999 MVFC Newcomer of the Year and garnered All-MVC accolades in 2000 as a quarterback at SIU. His wife, the former Jamie Campbell, played softball for the Salukis from Redhawks Drop Season-Opener Southeast dropped its season-opener to #24 Missouri, 34-3, in front of a crowd of 64,670 at Memorial Stadium/Faurot Field on Sept. 5. 3 season. It was the Redhawks 15th-consecutive loss to a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent FOOTBALL NOTES / SOUTHERN ILLINOIS GAME SEPT. 12 Major Attention Legitimately one of the best receivers the Football Championship Subdivision has to offer, Preseason All-American Paul McRoberts is getting significant interest. Several NFL teams, including the Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars, San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs and Tennessee Titans have already taken a look at McRoberts OVC Football Standings Defensive Statement The Redhawk defense held its own against a very good Missouri offense last week. Southeast held the Tigers under 100 yards rushing (98), posted three sacks, tallied eight tackles for loss and had an interception. The three sacks matched the Redhawks single-game high from last season just one game into their 2015 campaign. On the Move With 32 yards against Southern Illinois Saturday, Paul McRoberts will join Southeast s top-10 list in career receiving yards. McRoberts currently has 1,535 yards. Willie Ponder currently holds the all-time career record with 2,543 receiving yards from More on McRoberts Paul McRoberts made the 100th catch of his career on a 3-yard pass from Tay Bender in the first quarter against Missouri (Sept. 5). McRoberts led Southeast with four receptions for 40 yards in that game. He ran his career total to 103 receptions. In addition, McRoberts has caught a touchdown pass in 11 of his last 14 games. The Chase is On Star wide receiver Paul McRoberts is on pace to break Southeast s all-time career record in receiving touchdowns. McRoberts enters his senior year with 20 receiving touchdowns and needs seven more to break the record. He is currently tied for second behind Willie Ponder who caught 26 touchdown passes from Ponder is the Redhawks all-time leading receiver with 2,543 yards. Bender Debut Junior Tay Bender made his first career start as Southeast s quarterback at Missouri (Sept. 5). Bender completed 12-of-22 passes for 56 yards and rushed for a game-high 69 yards on 14 carries. He completed passes to six different Redhawk receivers and did not throw an interception. Bender is Southeast s third different starting quarterback in three years. Meredith Notches Career-High Outside linebacker Chad Meredith tallied a career and team-high eight tackles against Missouri (Sept. 5). Meredith, who missed the last eight games of the 2014 season with a shoulder injury, also had two tackles for loss. It was just the third start of his career. Good Knight One of the Ohio Valley Conference s best punters, Alex Knight had a huge game against Missouri (Sept. 5). Knight established new career-highs in punts (10), punting yards (497), 50+ yard punts (5) and punts inside the 20 (6). He averaged 49.7 yards per punt, as well. Knight also had a 60-yard punt against the Tigers, marking the second-longest of his career. He ranks second in the Football Championship Subdivision in punting. First Takeaway Eriq Moore recorded Southeast s first turnover of the season when he intercepted a Maty Mauk pass on Missouri s second drive of the game. Moore, who led the Redhawks with three picks a year ago, now has five in his career. New to the Club A total of five players made their first career starts at Southeast against Missouri last week. Alex Snyder (OT), Michael Cooke (OT), Stephen Dunn (TE), Tay Bender (QB) and Ryan Moore (CB) are the newest starters. In all, 14 different players saw action for the first time as Redhawks. The website includes photos, features, passions, triumphs, statistics and a video surrounding McRoberts life and football career. Updates will be provided regularly. White Balance Southeast donned white pants, white jerseys and black helmets for its season-opener at Missouri (Sept. 5). It was the first time the Redhawks suited up in white pants and white jerseys since 2009 (Oct. 24, at Tennessee Tech). That year, Southeast wore its white uniform set with red helmets. Redhawk Captains Senior wide receiver Paul McRoberts, and juniors Garret Baker (G), Eriq Moore (SS) and Roper Garrett (LB) are Southeast s captains this season. McRoberts, Baker and Garrett are captains for the second year in a row, while Moore earned the distinction for the first time in his career. Closing In DeMichael Jackson is coming up on 2,000 rushing yards in his career. Jackson presently has 1,788 yards and nine touchdowns in 29 games and 15 starts at Southeast. He needs 212 yards to reach the mark. Henry Harris (2,773 from ) was the last Redhawk running back to rush for 2,000 career yards. Jackson Eyes Big Senior Year DeMichael Jackson is Southeast s feature back looking to end his career with a bang. A three-year starter, Jackson has not yet rushed for 1,000 yards in a season as a Redhawk. He likely would have done it in 2014 if a broken hand injury didn t sideline him for four weeks. Jackson, one of three All-Ohio Valley Conference performers back from last season, led Southeast with 734 yards and five touchdowns on 137 carries a year ago. Bender Named Starting Quarterback Tay Bender was officially named the Redhawks starting quarterback on Aug. 27. A native of Lincoln, Nebraska, Bender transferred to Southeast from Iowa Western Community College. He finished spring drills at the top of the Redhawks depth chart and did not fall out of that spot throughout preseason camp. Bender, who stands at 6 4, 220, was a two-time All-Midwest Conference selection for Iowa Western CC, leading his team to a 22-2 record over the last two seasons. He completed 166- of-282 passes (58.9 pct.) for 1,912 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2014, as the Reivers went 11-1 and finished runner-up in the junior college national championship game. Bender also rushed for 184 yards and another four TDs on 82 carries. He graduated early from Southwest High School and enrolled at Kansas State. Bender worked with the second-team offense during the Wildcats spring drills in 2012 before transferring to Iowa Western CC prior to the start of the 2013 campaign. Tight Race Three dual threat quarterbacks, including Tay Bender, Dante Vandeven and Alex Niznak, hooked up in a heated battle this year. All can naturally pick apart defenses with their ability to run and pass the football. Bender, who stands at 6 4, 220, won the job, while Niznak (6 2, 240) and Vandeven (6 2, 190) are No. 2 and No. 3 on the depth chart, respectively. Vandeven, a local product from nearby Jackson, Missouri, had an outstanding camp as a true freshman. Niznak played in four games as Southeast s backup quarterback a year ago. Bender is the third different starting QB in as many years for the Redhawks. Kyle Snyder broke Southeast s single-season record in total offense with 3,243 yards in his only year as a starter in Snyder threw for 2,582 yards and 23 touchdowns and ran for 661 yards and nine touchdowns. Before that, Scott Lathrop started eight games under center in Second Season Tom Matukewicz is in his second year as Southeast s head coach. Matukewicz led the Redhawks to an overall record of 5-7 in his debut as head coach last season. Southeast knocked off two ranked opponents in a season for the first time in the program s history en route to its highest win total since Statistically, the Redhawks led the Ohio Valley Conference and ranked nationally in third down conversion percentage (45.7), fourth down conversion percentage (66.7) and sacks allowed (9). Matukewicz s 2014 club averaged 32 points per game, its second highest scoring average in school history. The excitement 4

around Matukewicz s Brick-by-Brick process driven approach resulted in an increase of 1,024 at Houck Stadium, as well. For the Record Tom Matukewicz owns a 6-8 record as a head coach. Matukewicz is 1-2 all-time against Football Bowl Subdivision teams. His first win came when he was an interim head coach at Northern Illinois in Matukewicz guided the Huskies to a win over Fresno State in the Humanitarian Bowl that year. Matukewicz s other game involving an FBS opponent was at Kansas on Sept. 6, Southeast fell to the Jayhawks, 34-28, in that contest. The Redhawks are 4-2 at home and 1-6 on the road with Matukewicz at the helm. Against the FBS The Redhawks are 1-20 all-time against Football Bowl Sudivision oppponents. Southeast has dropped its last 15 matchups with FBS schools. Additionally, the Redhawks have never beaten a BCS team. Southeast s future dates with FBS opponents include: Sept. 3, 2016 at Memphis; Sept. 2, 2017 at Kansas; Sept. 21, 2019 at Missouri; Sept. 3, 2022 at Iowa State. Top Tackler Roper Garrett, Southeast s top tackler from last season, is back at linebacker. In his first year as a starter, Garrett recorded 96 tackles and led the Redhawks in tackles for loss (8.5), sacks (3) and forced fumbles (5). He tied for second in the Ohio Valley Conference with 10.7 tackles per game, finishing with double-digit stops on five occasions. Garrett made a full recovery from a broken leg injury that sidelined him for the final three weeks of the 2014 season. He had five tackles in his first start at Missouri (Sept. 5) this season. Offensive Line Strong Again Southeast s offensive line is strong again this season. In 2014, the Redhawks excelled in their protection game, allowing only nine sacks in 12 contests. Southeast led the Ohio Valley Conference and ranked sixth in the Football Championship Subdivision in sacks allowed. The line 2015 FOOTBALL NOTES / SOUTHERN ILLINOIS GAME SEPT. 12 anchored an offense that rated among the top 15 FCS teams in both third and fourth down conversions, and put up 384 points (32 ppg) for the second-highest point total in a season in school history. Starters Jake McCandless (C), Garret Baker (LG) and Traven Mable (RG) are back to fill the interior. McCandless (23), Baker (13) and Mable (22) combined for 58 starts in their careers. Deep Secondary The Redhawk secondary went from having not enough depth in 2014 to being the deepest part of the defense this season. A total of 14 players with an even split of seven returnees and seven newcomers form the re-vamped defensive backfield. Safeties David Coley and Eriq Moore are the leaders. Coley, who had some interest from NFL teams this preseason, saw action in 12 games and made five starts a year ago. Moore returns after leading the team in interceptions (3) and tying for fourth in tackles (65). Ryan Moore, along with transfers Jamarl Holloway and Taron Divens, give Southeast a fresh look at cornerback where it lost both starters after the 2014 campaign. Something Special For the first time in his Southeast career, kicker Ryan McCrum is in a season as a scholarship player. McCrum, who joined the team as a walk-on in 2012, was awarded a full scholarship after a gigantic 2014 campaign. Southeast was last in the Ohio Valley Conference in field goals and PAT kicking in 2013 before McCrum entirely flipped the kicking game a year ago. He led the OVC in field goals and scoring (kick) with 94 points. McCrum made four field goals of 50 or more yards, including a career and OVC season-long 55-yarder vs. Tennessee State (Oct. 4). At one time, he kicked a 50-yard field goal in threestraight games. A First-Team All-OVC pick, Third-Team Sports Network All-American and finalist for the Fred Mitchell Award, McCrum added 40-of-41 extra points and didn t miss a PAT until his final attempt of the season. About Southern Illinois Southern Illinois, ranked seventh in this year s Missouri Valley Football Conference Preseason Poll, began its season with a resilient performance at Big Ten Conference member Indiana (Sept. 5). SIU, which racked up 659 yards of total offense, came up short in a loss. The Salukis had the Hoosiers on the ropes, leading at the half. IU, however, came back and led until the final 18 seconds of the game. Mark Iannotti hooked up with Jimmy Jones, who made a leaping catch in the end zone to narrow the gap to one. SIU went for the two-point conversion and the win, but missed the attempt. Offensive lineman Ethan Wirth and linebacker Chase Allen garnered honorable mention Preseason All-MVFC honors for the Dawgs. 6

2015 FOOTBALL NOTES / SOUTHERN ILLINOIS GAME SEPT. 12 7

HEAD COACH TOM MATUKEWICZ Tom Matukewicz is in his second year as Southeast Missouri s head coach. Attitude, Effort, Passion and Discipline are the four cornerstones of Tom Matukewicz s process-driven Southeast Missouri football program. Matukewicz begins his second year at the helm with plenty of positives to carry into the upcoming 2015 season. A native of Silver Lake, Kan., Matukewicz hit the ground running in his head coaching debut in 2014, leading the Redhawks to their most wins in a season since Along the way, Matukewicz and company enjoyed two wins over ranked opponents, beating then-no. 3 Southeastern Louisiana and then-no. 20 Tennessee State. Southeastern Louisiana was the highestranked opponent Southeast had ever beaten as the 2014 campaign marked the first time the Redhawks knocked off two ranked opponents in the same season. After those wins, Southeast ranked No. 23 in the Oct. 6, 2014 Sports Network Poll, achieving its first Top 25 ranking since the end of the 2010 season. Statistically, the Redhawks led the Ohio Valley Conference in third down conversion percentage (45.7), fourth down conversion percentage (66.7) and sacks allowed (9). Southeast was also sixth in the Football Championship Subdivision in sacks allowed, 13th in fourth down conversion percentage and 14th in third down conversion percentage. As a team, the Redhawks scored 384 points, their most in a season since In addition, Southeast posted 15 sacks for its most in a season since The excitement of Matukewicz s brick-by-brick approach generated an increase of 1,024 at Houck Stadium, as well. Matukewicz coached a total of four All-OVC performers, including first-team selections Paul McRoberts and Ryan McCrum, and second-team honorees DeMichael Jackson and Tim Hamm-Bey. Now, with another strong recruiting class coming in, the Redhawk faithful are even more anxious to see what the Redhawks bring to the table next. Off the field, Matukewicz s program is highly visible in the community and often engages in random acts of kindness. He simply uses goodwill to teach his players valuable life lessons. During Southeast s 2014 season-opener against Missouri Baptist, the Redhawk captains took a No. 14 jersey to midfield for the coin toss to honor the memory of Kaden Robert. Robert was a Kelly High School football player who died in an accidental shooting in June, A week later, Michael Douglas, a 16-year old from Kansas, accompanied the Redhawks on the sideline for their game against the Jayhawks. Douglas was diagnosed with an interstitial lung disease when he was a year old and has to use an oxygen tank. The teenager initially contacted wide receiver Mike Cyliax for an autograph. Once Matukewicz heard the story, he wrote Douglas a letter and invited him to the game. Southeast s football program also generously donated to the Nolan Weber Believers 5K & Fun Run/Walk in nearby Jackson. Weber was a soccer player at Jackson High School who fought brain cancer for almost three years (doubling the life expectancy of what his illness normally came with) before he passed away. The contribution went to the Believing Beyond Nolan Weber Foundation that provides financial and/ or spiritual/emotional support to children and their families battling cancer and other catastrophic illnesses. Matukewicz also presented a check to the parents of Dominic Hooper -- a Scott City teen who tied in February, 2014 from injuries sustained in an ATV accident -- during the team s annual spring game. It s all about a process, said Matukewicz. It s about doing ordinary things with unordinary discipline. We re going to build a program that you re proud of. A tireless worker, Matukewicz brings energy and passion unlike any other. His commitment to excellence and brick-by-brick mantra have the Redhawks soaring to new heights. Popularly known as Coach Tuke, Matukewicz was introduced as Southeast s 13th head coach on Dec. 18, Matukewicz is used to transforming programs into winners and he did just that as an assistant coach at Northern Illinois and Southern Illinois. While at NIU, Matukewicz helped lead the Huskies to the Mid-American Conference West title in 2010 and an outright MAC Championship in Matukewicz was the linebackers coach in 2011 after serving as defensive run-game coordinator for three seasons under thenhead coach Jerry Kill. Matukewicz reached the pinnacle of his NIU stint when he was interim head coach for the Huskies trip to the 2010 Humanitarian Bowl after Kill accepted the Minnesota job at the end of the season. He led NIU to a commanding victory over Fresno State in that game. Matukewicz was responsible for coordinating the Huskies run defense during his first three seasons at NIU. In 2010, the Huskies ranked 24th 8

HEAD COACH TOM MATUKEWICZ nationally and third in the MAC in rushing defense, allowing yards per game. NIU also had the MAC s No. 1 total defense in 2008 and In his first year in DeKalb, Matukewicz was part of a staff that turned NIU into the No. 1 scoring and total defense in the MAC, and one of the top 20 units in the country. The Huskies boasted the secondmost improved scoring defense in the nation in That year, NIU allowed only 18 points per game, down from 30.8 the previous season. The Huskies ranked 17th nationally in total defense and was fifth in the country in pass defense. Before that, Matukewicz spent seven seasons at SIU. As linebackers coach and run-game coordinator, he had a big hand in three Missouri Valley Football Conference championships (2003, 2004, 2005) and five NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoff berths (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007). Matukewicz was named the 2007 FCS Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association after helping turn the Salukis into one of the top rushing defenses in the nation. SIU held its opponents to a rushing average below 135 yards per game every year from The Salukis had three of the top-10 rushing defenses in program history during that time. Matukewicz s 2004 linebacker corps formed the heart of a defense which gave up just rushing yards per game, led the nation in scoring defense and allowed 13.2 points per contest. Matukewicz made one more stop at the University of Toledo prior to accepting his first head coaching job at Southeast. At Toledo, Matukewicz was defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. In 2012, Matukewicz helped guide a defense that ranked among the top 25 in the nation in fourth-down conversion (9th), red-zone defense (10th), interceptions (18th) and turnovers forced (25th). The Rockets went 9-4 and earned a trip to the 2012 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Matukewicz s defense also featured the nation s leading tackler in linebacker Dan Molls. Molls had 166 tackles, earned First-Team All-MAC honors and became Toledo s first Academic All-American in eight years. Matukewicz completed his undergraduate work at Fort Hays State. He received his bachelor s degree in physical education in 1997 and then earned his master s degree in administration at Pittsburg State. Matukewicz coached at Fort Hays State ( ), Pittsburg State ( ), Coffeyville Community College ( ) and Emporia State ( ) prior to his NCAA Division I football tenure. Matukewicz and his wife, Lenna, have two daughters, Georgia and Shelby. Tom Matukewicz led Southeast Missouri to five wins during his first year as head coach in 2014, the Redhawks most in a season since Southeast also beat two ranked opponents in a season for the first time in school history. 9

#24 Missouri 34, Southeast Missouri 3 September 5, 2015 Memorial Stadium/Faurot Field Attendance: 64,670 COLUMBIA, Mo. - Southeast Missouri opened the 2015 season with a 34-3 loss to #24 Missouri in front of a crowd of 64,670 at Memorial Stadium/Faurot Field. Mizzou, which shutout Southeast in three quarters, scored the first 17 points of the game and never looked back. Maty Mauk, who improved to 15-4 as a collegiate starting quarterback, threw touchdown passes on two of the Tigers first three drives. Mauk hooked up with J Mon Moore on a 27-yard strike to cap a quick 5-play, 64-yard march in just 1:15, giving Mizzou an early lead. After a Southeast punt, Mauk went to work again, engineering a 5-play, 54- yard drive. His second touchdown pass, a 23-yard toss to Nate Brown, extended Mizzou s lead to 14-0 with 4:49 left to play in the first quarter. Freshman Drew Lock made his debut under center during Mizzou s first drive of the second quarter. Lock started strong, completing 4-of- 5 passes for 51 yards. His 22-yard pass to Moore on 3rd-and-4 kept the drive alive that resulted in a 39-yard field goal by Andrew Baggett. Southeast put together its only scoring drive of the game late in the first half. The Redhawks covered 76 yards in 16 plays before Ryan McCrum kicked a 35-yard field goal to make it 17-3 at the intermission. Mizzou assembled a 10-play, 76-yard drive to start the second half, but settled for a field goal. Mauk completed a 25- yard pass to Moore to move the Tigers to the Southeast-20. Five plays later, Mauck completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Sean Culkin. The catch, however, was negated after Culkin stepped out of bounds before securing the ball in the back of the end zone. Baggett s 23-yard field goal split the uprights immediately after the penalty to stretch the Tigers lead to 20-3 with 10:55 remaining in the third quarter. A big play on special teams allowed the Tigers to add to their lead. On 4th-and-10, linebacker Kentrell Brothers blocked quarterback Tay Bender s pooch punt. Aarion Penton scooped up the ball and ran 41 yards to the end zone, raising Mizzou s lead to 27-3 with 22 seconds left in the third quarter. Lock threw a 78-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Tyler Hunt for Mizzou s final score. That play polished off the Tigers longest march which consisted of five plays and 92 yards in less than two minutes. Mauk completed 12-of-22 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns and Lock threw for 138 yards and a touchdown to lead Mizzou. The Tigers outgained Southeast, , with 319 of their yards coming through the air. Bender played well in his first career start as the Redhawks QB. He completed 12-of-22 passes for 56 yards and ran for a game-high 69 yards on 14 carries. Bender did not throw an interception, as well. Paul McRoberts, who hauled in his 100th career catch late in the first quarter, finished with four receptions for 40 yards. Offensively, Southeast did not have a play go for more than 21 yards. In just his third career start, Chad Meredith led the Redhawks with a career-high eight tackles. Eriq Moore also recorded the fifth interception of his career when he picked off Mauk at the Southeast 6-yardline. Southeast s defense accounted for a total of three sacks and eight tackles for loss, while holding Mizzou under 100 rushing yards (98). Punter Alex Knight established new career-highs in punts (10), punting yards (497), 50+ yard punts (5) and punts inside the 20 (6). Knight s 60-yard punt in the second quarter marked the second-longest of his career.
