Brian Beaury, the head men s basketball coach at The College of Saint Rose, will take a medical leave of absence for the remainder of this season, the school announced on Dec. 7. Beaury has confronted a myriad of non-life threatening medical issues throughout the past four years and after discussing his on-going health concerns with his family and doctors, he has decided that it is in his best interest to step aside at this time and focus on his health for the next few months. In the announcement, Beaury emphasized that he will continue to have daily communication with his coaching staff and players regarding their practice and game preparation. Meanwhile, assistant coaches Mike Long and Mike Perno will handle the program's day-to-day operations throughout the remainder of this season. I have had some health concerns. Due to my recent stay in the hospital, I felt that it made sense to focus my energy on getting well right now. I made my mind up to do this while I was in the hospital during Thanksgiving weekend. I just needed to get input from my doctors and support from the College, and everyone is behind me 100 percent, said Beaury. St. Cloud St. to Seek New League ST. CLOUD, Minn. St. Cloud State University President Dr. Roy Saigo and Director of Athletics Dr. Morris Kurtz have announced that the university will formally seek membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) for its Division II programs. St. Cloud State s association with the North Central Conference (NCC) will end following the season. SCSU will meet with the NSIC in January and seek membership beginning with the season. The school said that it has enjoyed a competitive non-conference relationship with the NSIC and also views the Northern Sun as an organization that serves institutions with an academic and athletic philosophy similar to St. Cloud State University s mission, vision and values. St. Cloud State has been a member of the North Central Conference in men s athletics since 1981 and women s athletics since The St. Cloud State men s athletics department was a charter member of the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) in The Northern Sun Conference (NSC) for women s sports was formally announced in and SCSU was a charter member of that organization. 5 The Coach s Seat Courtside With... DIIB: Why did you want to become a college basketball coach? Dickson: It s funny, but I never really thought about being a college basketball coach when I was in school. I was a Business major and honestly thought that would end up being my career path. After graduating from UNH, I had an opportunity to get my graduate degree at Biscayne College in Florida and work with Coach Ken Stibler as a graduate assistant. I guess I got the coaching bug and realized that this was something that I really wanted to do. DIIB: What do you like best about being a Division II basketball coach? Dickson: I love coaching in Division II. We are coaching full scholarship basketball players that are totally committed to the game and their individual improvement. We are all very competitive and work extremely hard to put a quality basketball team on the floor, year in and year out. That being said, we really are coaching kids that have their priorities straight and have little or no illusions about making the jump directly to the NBA. Most of them understand that getting their degree and being prepared for life after college is really the most important thing if you can win some games and create a successful environment along the way, all the better. DIIB: How would you describe the NE-10 as a basketball conference? Dickson: I have been involved in the Northeast-10 Conference since its inception and have watched it grow into a league that can now compete on a national level. The last two seasons have seen teams from our conference both advance past the first round Bryant (after a 6 th place finish in our league) lost in the finals to Virginia Union in 2005 and Stonehill lost in the semifinal round to eventual champion Winona State in But I really think the overall strength of our league is in the balance that we have from top to bottom. All of our coaches are full time and most of them do an outstanding job preparing their teams you know that they are going to try and take away your strengths and make you play to your weaknesses. We really must always be ready to play and there is no such thing as a gimme game in our league. The overall grind of the season Keith Dickson St. Anselm College can wear you out sometimes but it is an extremely challenging conference on a nightly basis for both our players and our coaches. DIIB: What is your coaching philosophy offensively and defensively? Dickson: Well, I ve been the head coach at Saint Anselm for 20 years and we really have not wavered one bit over all that time in our overall philosophy. We are basically playing the same way we have always played, just with different players. Offensively we run a structured fast break system and run that into five man motion. We want to move the ball in the air from side to side and break the defense down with ball movement and quality screening action. I want them to play offense free and easy, unselfishly and aggressively. Ideally we want to build a balanced attack that includes using the three point line, post play and getting to the foul line. Defensively we have really evolved into a switching man to man team. We have built our defense on simple components communication on our hand offs, quality ball pressure, and good help and rotations. We do not want to give up any easy baskets and demand that we play defense with a great sense of discipline. DIIB: What is the most memorable win of your coaching career? Loss? Dickson: I d have to say that beating Adelphi in the regional finals in 2000 was probably the most memorable victory of my career. It advanced us to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history and gave us such a great basketball experience. We have probably had better teams at Saint Anselm during my career, but that team finally got us a regional championship I will never forget that moment. All losses are memorable. It seems like the older you get the harder it gets to lose I thought 5 Division II Bulletin January 3, 2007

6 The Coach s Seat things were supposed to get easier but that really doesn t seem to be the case. DIIB: What is the biggest challenge you face as a college basketball coach? Dickson: I think it s trying to put a quality team on the court, year after year, and building a competitive program that will stand up over the test of time. It seems like it gets harder and harder each year to accomplish those goals and there is always someone or something in your way I guess that s the beauty of college basketball. DIIB: If you could change one rule in college basketball, what would it be? Dickson: This one is easy. I would give each player another foul as the game heads into overtime (one extra foul for each 10 minutes of overtime). I ve seen too many overtime games decided by players that ordinarily wouldn t be in the game. If you have already fouled out in regulation then you cannot come back in the game but everyone else gets another foul. This would keep the best players on the court and lets them decide the game. DIIB: When was the last time you read a coaching book or attended a coaching seminar? Did you learn something? Dickson: I am a very big reader and am always on the lookout for something that will teach me something or inspire me in some way they don t necessarily have to be about sports, but about leadership or performance. I live in New England and have a great deal of respect for what Bill Belichick has done with the Patriots his book The Education of a Coach was extremely enlightening and informative. I watch a lot of basketball on television, both college and the NBA, and try to pick up little things that way. We all have our own way of doing things but you can always learn something from watching someone else whether it is an UOB or SOB concept or something they are doing with their entry sets. DIIB: Do you have a coaching mentor who helped you with your career? Who? How did they help? Dickson: My high school basketball coach, Bob Fisher, probably had the most influence on my overall passion for the game. He instilled in me a solid work ethic, an intense competitiveness and an overall desire to be successful that I have never forgotten. I was very fortunate to have been around him at such a young and impressionable age he really is a great high school coach. Want to be part of the Coach s Seat feature? Send an to gsr@teleport.com.
