Mercyhurst travels to Vermont for its fi nal non-conference games of the season, as the Lakers participate in the St. Michael s Tournament. Mercyhurst will not face the host school, but will square off against a pair of teams from New York, Post and Concordia. The Series This will be the fi rst game for the Lakers against either Post or Concordia (N.Y.). Scouting Mercyhurst Avi Fogel leads the team in scoring (17.2 ppg) and assists (3.9 apg). He led the Lakers with 17 points against Shepherd. Terry Smith averages 13.7 ppg, good for second on the team, as are his 24 steals and 79 percent free throw shooting. Mitch Brennan has become more effi cient this season, hitting 46 percent of his fi eld goals. Andy Kubinski and Richard Field both hit at least 50 percent from the fl oor. Kubinski leads the team in rebounding (4.9 rpg), fi eld goal percentage (53 percent) and steals (29). He has also converted 4-of-10 threes. Field, meanwhile, is hitting 51 percent from the fi eld and ranks second with eight blocks and 4.6 rpg. The junior is also shooting 31 percent from threepoint distance. Off the bench, Jeff Daisley returned from injury against Slippery Rock and picked up four blocks. He then followed that up with one of the best performances of his career against Shepherd. He fi nished 7-of-9 shooting for 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked a pair of shots. On the year, the senior center averages 6.5 ppg on 52 percent shooting and 3.7 rpg. 3 Lakers Pick up First Road Win Mercyhurst got 26 points from its bench and limited Shepherd University to just over a shot-a-minute in posting a win in nonconference action December 20. The Lakers improved to 9-2 on the season while the Rams dropped to 5-3. The nine wins already exceed last season s win total of eight. M e r c y h u r s t scored the first three points of the game on a three-point play by junior Richard Field, then watched the Rams collect the next 13 for a 10-point advantage. The Lakers regrouped, turned up the defense, and outscored the Rams 23-7 over the last 14 minutes of the half to grab a lead at intermission. The game was deadlocked at 19 with 5:21 left when the Lakers went on a 7-1 run to close the half. 15 of Mercyhurst s 26 first half points game from its bench: Stu Anglum (7), Jeff Daisley (6), and Cory Carson (2). Although the Rams shot 50% from the floor in the half, they attempted only 18 shots. Both teams combined to shoot 0 of 16 from beyond the arc in the opening stanza. The Lakers forced 14 Shepherd turnovers while committing only four. Mercyhurst led the entire second half and fought off the Rams who closed to within three on two separate occasions, the last at with 12:50 left. But the Lakers responded with a 17-6 run over the next eight minutes to open a advantage and were never seriously threatened again. The Mercyhurst bench proved to be the difference, outscoring its counterparts Daisley led the reserves with a season-high 14 points on 7 of 9 shooting. Starters Avi Fogel (17) and Terry Smith (10) were the other players in double digits, but suffered through a combined 7 of 27 night from the floor. Rams leading scorer Chad Myers, averaging nearly 14 pointsa-game and 47% from beyond the arc, was held to just 1 of 11 shooting (0 of 7 triples) and five points. Both teams were held in check from the floor as the Lakers cashed only 39.1%)while the Rams convereted just 40.4%. Shepherd outrebounded Mercyhurst 37-34, but the Lakers s defense caused 22 turnovers. Mercyhurst turned the ball over only ten times and generated eleven steals. The Lakers improved to 2-0 lifetime against the Rams, having won in Erie last season. D-E-F-E-N-S-E Defense has been a trademark of Mercyhurst teams in recent years, with being no exception. The Lakers are allowing just 62.6 ppg this season - on pace for the second best season at Mercyhurst. Last year s team holds the second best mark in school history, after it allowed just 64.0 ppg. The squad earned the school record, holding foes to just 59.1 ppg. Under Coach Manchel, Mercyhurst has allowed just 61.7 ppg. Quick Start Mercyhurst s current 9-2 start is tied for the second-best 11-game start in school history. When the Lakers started the season 5-0, it tied for the second longest unbeaten start for a Laker squad. The fastest start in Mercyhurst history belongs to the squad that won its first nine contests and 21 of its first 22 en route to a 26-3 record. Toppling the Empire State Although the Lakers have never faced either Concordia or Post, Mercyhurst has played 30 schools from the state of New York. The Lakers have posted a record in 135 games against those squads. Crashing the Boards Despite a starting frontline that averages only 6-5, the Lakers have outrebounded their opponents in The Lakers hold a +0.2 rebounding margin for the season, despite the fact that their top rebounder (Andy Kubinski, 4.9 rpg) ranks just 20th in the GLIAC. This is nothing new for Mercyhurst. Last season, the Lakers held a +4.2 rebounding margin with a frontcourt averaging 6-6. Second Chances Mercyhurst holds a 0.2 advantage in rebounding thus far in , thanks in large part to the Lakers efforts on the offensive glass. Mercyhurst has grabbed 139 offensive rebounds (12.6 per game) as opposed to just 109 allowed (9.9 per game). The Lakers have been led on the offensive glass by Andy Kubinski, who is tied for fourth in the GLIAC with 3.0 offensive rebounds per game. Against Bloomsburg on November 22, all seven of Kubinksi s rebounds came off the offensive glass. All of the second chances have led to a advantage in second chance points. Outside the Conference The Lakers conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule at the St. Michael s Tournament. The team is 8-0 against such competition so far in Mercyhurst posted a 6-4 record (.600) in non-conference games last season. 4 International Flavor The Lakers feature a trio of players from overseas. Mitch Brennan is a Sydney, Australia native, while Roland Andris and Roberts Jansons came to Mercyhurst from Europe. Andris is originally from Weingarten, Germany and Jansons grew up in Kuldiga, Latvia. Close Calls Of Mercyhurst s nine wins this season, four have been decided by four points or less and two have gone into overtime. The Lakers have won all four games, including overtime wins over Molloy (74-72) and Edinboro (76-72). Mercyhurst s other close calls came against Felician (83-79) and Wayne State (65-61). With Lakers leading by three, connected on free throw with four seconds left to seal win over Felician. Hit game-winner with 1.8 left in overtime against Molloy. He finished two assists shy of a triple-double in the game, with 14 points, 11 boards and eight assists. Sealed win over Wayne State with free throw with three seconds left to make it a two possession game. Scored 12 points in overtime - including Mercyhurst s first 10 - on 4-of-4 shooting with two threes and 2-of-2 FT, as MC held off Edinboro. Ironmen Three Lakers rank among the GLIAC leaders in minutes played. Andy Kubinksi (34.73 mpg) is fifth, Avi Fogel is sixth (33.73) and Terry Smith is twelfth (31.36). Multitasking Avi Fogel has made quite an impression since transferring from Division I University of San Diego. The point guard leads the team in scoring (17.2 ppg - 4th GLIAC), assists (3.9 apg - 7th GLIAC), 3-point FG% (42 percent - 10th GLIAC), made threes (16), free throw percentage (81 percent), made free throws (43) and made field goals (5.9 per game). He is second on the squad in minutes played ( th GLIAC). Same Five Mercyhurst has used the same starting five in every game this season. 7 Game 11 December at St. Michael s Tournament Righting the Ship With nine wins already in , the Lakers have surpassed their total from all of last season. Their 9-2 start is a four game improvement on last season s 5-6 mark through 11 games. Burning the Nets The Mercyhurst starting five has shown unusual accuracy, with four players shooting at least 46 percent, led by Andy Kubinski s 53 percent mark. The starting quintet is hitting.468 as a unit this season (220-of-470). Field Day Richard Field filled up the stat sheet in his Mercyhurst debut. He tied for the game-high with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three. He grabbed a team-best seven rebounds, blocked three shots and dished out three assists. Going Pro Three former Lakers are currently playing in the professional ranks. Forward Josh Helm plays with the Rotterdam Basketball Club of the Netherlands first division. The team was last year. Against Ohio U., Helm had 33 points and 17 rebounds in a Rotterdam win. Guard Justin Shouse is the player/ coach of the Drangur Club in Iceland.
