The Teams Ball State is (6-1-1 MAC), leading the MAC West Division and sitting second in the overall league race. The Cardinals won a pair of home games last weekend, defeating Eastern Michigan 3-0 and Central Michigan 1-0 behind the first career goal from Peighton Cook. BSU will play its final three regular season games on the road. Buffalo is (4-3-1 MAC), sitting in a tie for third in the MAC East Division. The Bulls split two road games last weekend, falling 3-2 to Bowling Green and posting a 1-0 victory over Toledo... Akron is (0-7-1 MAC). The Zips dropped two road games last weekend, falling 4-2 at Toledo and 2-0 at Bowling Green. Ball State played both of this weekend s opponents at home last season, posting a pair of 1-0 victories. The Cardinals out-shot the Bulls 20-1 and scored on a goal from Lauren Roll in the 11th minute to earn the 100th career victory for head coach Craig Roberts. A 54th-minute goal from Sam Kambol two days later proved to be the game-winner against Akron. Alyssa Heintschel recorded the shutout against Buffalo, while Tristin Stuteville posted the one against Akron. About the Cardinals Ball State is seeking to become the first program ever to win three straight MAC regular season championships. The Cardinals enter the final three games second in the overall league standings with 19 points, two points behind Kent State. BSU has already secured a spot in the MAC Tournament and is looking to lock up a quarterfinal home game. The top four seeds will host those games. If the tournament started today, the hosts would be Kent State (21), Ball State (19), Northern Illinois (15) and Bowling Green (15). BSU won twice at home last weekend to rebound from an Oct. 8 overtime loss to NIU that was the program s first home defeat since Oct. 30, The Cardinals were unbeaten in their previous 25 home contests. It was the longest active home unbeaten streak in the nation. Since the start of the 2015 season, Ball State is (.889) on its home turf at the Briner Sports Complex. Goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel is one of 10 finalists nationwide for the Senior CLASS Award for women s soccer. The award recognizes student-athletes for achievement in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. In addition to being an All-MAC First Team goalkeeper, Heintschel is a 4.0 student as a chemistry, pre-med major. The three-year captain is also active in the community. Fan voting counts for one-third of the selection process, and fans can vote for Heintschel daily at Heintschel and Tristin Stuteville have split time in goal this season. Heintschel is in her fourth year at Ball State and owns a 0.78 career goals against average (fourth-best in MAC history). Stuteville transferred to Ball State from Saint Louis and has logged a 0.89 GAA in 14 career appearances with the Cardinals. Both are team captains, along with junior D Taylor Pooley. Heintschel tied the school record for career goalkeeper wins in the Oct. 5 victory at Western Michigan. She notched the 34th win of her career, matching Rachael Murphy ( ) for the top spot on BSU s career list, and can take sole possession of the record with her next win.

2 A pair of sophomores lead the Cardinals offensively, with M Julia Elvbo and F Sam Kambol owning four goals each. All of Elvbo s goals have come during conference play, as have all three goals from junior M Lauren Roll. Senior M/F Allison Abbe shares the MAC lead with four assists in league play and owns five total for the year. Elvbo was named the HERO Sports national HERO of the Week and the MAC Offensive Player of the Week after her performances against Ohio and Kent State. She scored the Cardinals first two goals in the victory over Ohio and tallied the only goal in the Cardinals win over Kent State. Elvbo became the second Ball State player to score two goals in a game this season. Kambol scored twice against Western Illinois. Ball State is (.857) in MAC play dating back to 2015 for the best record in the conference during that stretch. The Cardinals 19 combined league wins in 2015 and 2016 tied for the most over a two-year period by any team in MAC history, matching the Central Michigan teams and the Toledo squads. After registering four goals in its first seven games, Ball State has tallied 17 goals in the past nine contests.... BSU has had 19 different players start at least one game this season. Twelve of the Cardinals 21 goals have been scored by players off the bench. Ball State challenged itself in the non-conference schedule with three games against teams currently rated among the top 60 in the NCAA RPI -- Notre Dame (16), Baylor (54) and TCU (59). Notre Dame and TCU were NCAA tournament teams a year ago. Senior D Sam Mattlin is back on the field for the Cardinals this season. Knee injuries forced her to miss the final 13 games of the 2015 season and all 20 contests in 2016, but she has returned this year to start every game on the back line... Senior M/D Lucy Walton is the most experienced member of the team in terms of games played. She has appeared in 70 contests over her four years. Dating back to 2015, BSU has surrendered one goal or fewer in 49 of its past 56 games. The Cardinals ranked among the top 25 nationally in goals against average in each of the past two seasons and led the MAC in that category three times in the past four years. Ball State has won the past two MAC regular season championships outright, marking only the second time that has been accomplished in league history. The first time was also by Ball State with its 2006 and 2007 outright titles. The Cardinals four total regular season championships are the most in league history. BSU reached an all-time high of No. 40 in the NCAA RPI last season and finished the year with its best ever year-end rating at No The Cardinals.775 winning percentage over the 2015 and 2016 seasons was the 10th-best of any team in the country during that stretch. BSU finished each of the past two years with 14 overall victories, tying for the second-most in a season in program history. He now owns 82 wins with the Cardinals, surpassing Ron Rainey for the top spot. Rainey, the program s first coach from , had 70 wins. Roberts, who started his head coaching career at UT Martin, also recorded the 100th win of his career last season and now has 116 career victories. BSU added an accomplished figure to the coaching staff this year in volunteer assistant Eamon Zayed. Craig Roberts, who completed his seventh season as the Ball State soccer head coach in 2016, has built Ball State back into a championship program. He has returned the Cardinals to prominence in the Mid-American Conference, highlighted by backto-back league regular season championships the past two seasons. Along the way, the native of Kidderminster, England, has become the winningest coach in program history. The 2016 championship campaign featured a pair of milestone victories for Roberts. He recorded the 100th win of his head coaching career Sept. 23 against Buffalo and broke the BSU wins record Oct. 14 against Bowling Green. He enters the 2017 season with 108 career victories, including 74 at Ball State. Roberts also serves as an assistant coach with the Puerto Rico Women s National Team, having previously filled the same role with Haiti. Through that experience, he has coached against national teams from countries such as the United States, Mexico and Canada. He has also coached against some of the world s best players, including Abby Wambach, Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan and Hope Solo. At Ball State, Roberts teams in each of the past two seasons have been some of the best in school history. The Cardinals have won 28 games during that stretch, going each season and finishing one shy of the school record for wins each time. BSU has started to make its mark on the national scene, cracking the top 70 in the RPI in both of those seasons, including an all-time high of No. 40 during the 2016 campaign. Even more impressively than its overall record the past two years, Ball State owns a conference mark during that stretch. The Cardinals finished both seasons atop the league standings, becoming only the second program in MAC history to win back-to-back regular season championships (the first was BSU in 2006 and 2007). Ball State went in MAC play in 2015, setting a program record for conference victories, and followed it up by going in The 19 combined wins are tied for the most by any team in a two-year period in league history. The 2016 season featured a school-record 10-game unbeaten streak, which began with an overtime road victory over ACC opponent Louisville. It was the program s first win over a Power 5 opponent since 2006, although Roberts has coached the Cardinals to positive results in their past three games against such schools with draws against LSU and Indiana during the 2015 campaign. The 2015 championship marked Ball State s return to prominence following a steady rise under Roberts guidance. After inheriting a program that won just four games the year prior to his arrival, Roberts improved the Cardinals winning percentage each season, reaching double-figure victories in both 2013 and 2014 before the major breakthrough. Both of those teams gave glimpses of the program s potential by reaching the semifinals of the MAC Tournament. The 2013 squad became the first Ball State team to reach the championship game, falling just short against a Western Michigan squad that went on to defeat Marquette in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The 2014 squad led the MAC in scoring with 32 goals and placed second in the league s West Division, marking Ball State s best finish since the league implemented divisions for soccer in That stood only briefly before the Cardinals finished atop the division in 2015 and Under Roberts, Ball State has been especially dominant on its home field. The Cardinals moved into their new home at the Briner Complex in his second season. Since then, BSU has posted a (.759) home mark, including (.921) over the past two seasons. Strong defense has been a hallmark of the Ball State program under Roberts. The Cardinals have recorded 52 shutouts during his tenure and tied the school record with 10 of them in His 2015 and 2016 teams both ranked among the top 25 nationally in goals against average. BSU has led the MAC in that category three times in the past four years. Roberts has coached a total of 14 All-MAC selections at Ball State, and he has tutored the league s defensive player of the year twice (Lorina White) and the freshman of the year once. The Cardinals tied a league record with five All-MAC First Team selections in Roberts has coached nine players at Ball State who have competed at various national team levels and several who have gone on to play professionally. The Cardinals have also excelled in the classroom under Roberts. He has coached two CoSIDA Academic All-Americans and eight Academic All-District selections. Skylar Chew became the first Ball State soccer player to be named a first-team Academic All-American when she accomplished the feat in Alyssa Heintschel was a secondteam selection in The Cardinals have also had 41 Academic All-MAC selections and eight NSCAA Scholar All-Region honorees during his time at Ball State.
