IF THE MVC TOURNAMENT BEGAN TODAY If the State Farm MVC Championship began today Drake would commence tournament action as the No. 3 seed, hosting sixth-seeded Evansville on Nov. 1, with the victor moving on to face No. 2 Missouri State in the semifinals. The remainder of the field would be comprised of No. 4 Creighton entertaining No. 5 Indiana State, with that winner battling top-seeded Illinois State. There is currently a four-way tie with six points apiece among the Bulldogs, Bluejays, Sycamores and Purple Aces, with Drake earning the No. 3 seed based on conference tie-breaking procedures. THE TIME TO SHINE The change of seasons has boded well for Drake over the years as the flipping of the calendar from September to October has ignited the Bulldogs into some of their best soccer of the season. In Drake s last eight seasons, including this fall, the Bulldogs own a record (.742) in the month of October, with only a mark in the program s inaugural season of 2002 representing the lone month the team has failed to post a winning mark. In five of the previous seven seasons Drake has lost one game or fewer, including a 7-1 ledger last season. BALANCED ATTACK The Bulldogs have found a balanced scoring attack as seven players have recorded a goal, led by seven from Elizabeth Woerle. Six Drake players have posted double-figure shots, with Woerle, Crystal Townley, Blair Nelson, Danielle Figliola and freshman Laura Moklestad (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) collecting 21, 14, 11, 11 and 10 shots on goal, respectively. DEFENSIVE INTENSITY The execution by Drake s starting defensive unit of junior Bailey Dorrington (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier), senior Rachel Gielau (Denver, Iowa/Denver), senior Karissa Brown (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) and senior Melissa Lewis has proven instrumental in the Bulldogs garnering shutouts in six contests this season. In those six games, Drake s defenders have withstood the barrage of 68 shots, including 36 on net against sophomore goalkeeper Kourtney Arnold (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk).

3 2009 MVC Standings AS OF OCT. 20 MVC Overall Illinois State Missouri State Creighton Drake Indiana State Evansville Northern Iowa Thursday, Oct. 22 Evansville at Purdue Friday, Oct. 23 Missouri State at Indiana State * Sunday, Oct. 25 Missouri State at SIU Edwardsville Evansville at Murray State Northern Iowa at Creighton * Drake at Illinois State * * denotes MVC match IN OUR LAST FIVE CONTESTS The Bulldogs have posted a record, including a pair of 1-0 shutouts in their last five games. Elizabeth Woerle has connected on two of her team-leading seven goals in the five games, while Laura Moklestad and redshirt sophomore Ali Walsh (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) have chipped in a tally apiece. Although she has not scored, Crystal Townley has collected 12 shots. Drake opponents are averaging 10.8 shots per contest and have found the goal four times. Kourtney Arnold has been peppered by 54 shots in that span, including 31 on goal, and has recorded 27 saves with a 0.76 GAA. ROOKIE MAKING A NAME Freshman Laura Moklestad has proved to be a challenge for opposing teams to defend this season as the Drake newcomer leads the team in assists (4), while ranking second in goals (4) and points (12). Her four goals have come on 22 shots, including 10 on goal, of which four have found the back of the net. She ranks 10th in the MVC in assists per game (0.24). BULLDOGS BITES Elizabeth Woerle has stepped up to be Drake s scoring leader in four MVC contests, having netted three of the Bulldogs four goals this season. She has done so on a team-high 14 shots, while fellow senior Crystal Townley has added 10 shots. The Bulldogs have proven to be a study in contrast at home and on the road in four league games as Drake is 2-0 at home, including a shutout over MVC scoring leader Creighton, while going 0-2 away from home. The road numbers are perplexing as the Bulldogs matched their opponents shots (26), but have been outscored 4-1, including 2-0 in the second half. Drake as made it a habit of playing in close affairs this season as the Bulldogs contest at Missouri State marked the first time in 10 games that a Drake tilt had been decided by more than one goal and only the third time in 17 games all season. The Bulldogs have had 17 games end in a tie in school history and their ability to bounce back after a tie has been quite evident as Drake has gone in its next game following a tie. With their 1-0 victory at Western Illinois, the Bulldogs surpassed their road win total for all of the 2008 campaign (2). The school record for road triumphs occurred during the 2006 season when Drake won six contests Drake WOMEN S SOCCER Roster No. Name Pos. Ht. Yr. Woerle collected her third career multi-goal game with her two tallies against South Dakota. After redshirting last season, Ali Walsh turned in a productive effort against South Dakota State and South Dakota, registering her first points of the season with a goal and an assist. The Bulldogs earned a result over a ranked opponent against No. 20 DePaul (Sept. 6) for the first time since playing No. 14 Marquette to a scoreless tie on Sept. 1, Kourtney Arnold posted three consecutive shutouts earlier this season and now has six in her career. Woerle is in third place all-time at Drake in career goals (21), five behind Sarah Foote ( ) for second place. Woerle s 50 career points rank fourth in school history, while Townley sits in fifth place with 41 career points. In its seven setbacks, Drake has averaged 10.0 shots and 4.4 saves, while seeing the opposition net 14.9 shots and 3.9 saves per game VS COMPARISON Drake has continued to make progress this season as compared through the identical number of games a year ago Overall Record Conference Record Goals Goals-Shot Attempts Goals Per Game Assists Shots Shots On Goal Shot Percentage Shots On Goal Percentage Shots Per Game Corner Kicks Opponent Corner Kicks Penalty Kicks Opponent Penalty Kicks IN OUR LAST MEETING Illinois State 1, Drake 0 (Nov. 1, 2008) DES MOINES, IOWA - Amanda Wisniewski scored with 24 seconds remaining in the first half to lift Illinois State past Drake for a 1-0 MVC victory at the Cownie Soccer Complex. Wisniewski scored a one-timer off a cross into the middle from Raquel Rattray. With conference championship implications on the line, the game was intense at times, finishing with 29 fouls and four yellow cards.
