IMMEDIATE REEASE CHARESTON, I (May, )--"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" may be the rallying cry for the Eastern Illinois women's softball team as it approaches the Gateway Conference Championships this week (May -) in Peoria, I. Rookie head coach Janet Marquis' crew sports an impressive -- record overall and - in the league. EIU tied Illinois State for the regular season championship with identical marks (-). The two teams split their regular season encounters in Bloomington-Normal. The ady Panthers achieved a historic first in Eastern Illinois sports annals--they won the school's first-ever team title (in any sport) in the Gateway Conference last weekend by taking three of four games from ichita State and Southwest Missouri. The under-dog EIU squad was picked seventh in the coaches' pre-season poll. Illinois State received the number one seed in the post-season tourney while the ady Panthers got the number two nod. Bradley (-) and Indiana State (-) round out the top four seeds in the fourth-annual Gateway Conference Softball Championships. EIU received a first-round bye and will play the winner of the (No.) Southwest Missouri-(No. ) estern Illinois (-) Thursday afternoon at : p.m. The double-elimination tournament concludes on Saturday. Eastern's sophomore dominated line-up (six sophomore starters) is led by a pair of record-setting yearlings. Right-handed hurler ZAM MOGI (Streator) has taken the collegiate diamond by storm since setting five national prep standards at Streator High School. She has a - record and is the second pitcher in the league to surpass wins in. Mogill has

3 a miniscule ERA of. while striking out a school record batters in innings. The deceptively quick math education major has career shutouts--including this season. Both marks are ady Panther records. In her last four starts, Mogill has allowed one earned run in. innings while throwing three blankings. ANGE ENDVAY (Mundelein) is third on the team in hitting with a. average. She won all league honors as a freshman a year ago and appears to be a strong contender this season. The clutch hitter owns the school-record for triples with while also possessing the career mark with three-baggers. endvay leads the club in hits, RBIs (), runs () and home runs (I). The powerful right fielder also is one of the finest defensive outfielders in the conference. Freshman MARY JO MCCARTHY {Pickering, Ontario/Canada)--despite being plagued by injuries--is hitting. in games. Her hits are tied for second on the club. She is second on the team in runs with while also lashing out three triples. SARA KARCHER (ayne City) may be the most versatile player on the squad. She has played short stop, second base, designated hitter and pitcher. The Academic All-Gateway Conference performer is hitting. with RBls--second best on the team. Her hits are tied for second on the team. Karcher has a - record on the mound with five shutouts.
