The Bulldogs then host another in-state rival, Northern Iowa, in the fi nal Missouri Valley Conference series of the season. A doubleheader Saturday (May 2) and a single game Sunday (May 3) both begin at noon. SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: Iowa is (9-5 Big 10) after 12-0 and 12-1 sweep at Indiana Saturday and Sunday (April 25 and 26). The Hawkeyes are led by Colleen McGlaughlin with a.387 average (60-for-155), 48 RBI, 14 doubles and nine home runs. Teammate Chelsey Carmody has a team-leading 34 runs scored. Brittany Weil and Amanda Zust split the pitching duties for Iowa. Weil is 22-7 with a team-leading 1.03 ERA, 282 strikeouts and innings pitched. Zust has compiled a 16-4 record, a 1.74 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 133 innings. Northern Iowa is (13-10 MVC) after losing two of three games at Illinois State. The Panthers were swept by the Redbirds 4-3 and 7-4 Saturday (April 25) and defeated the Redbirds 5-4 Sunday (April 26). The Panther bats are led by Megan Machovec and Rachel Gerking with a.369 and.353 average, respectively. Gerking has a team-leading 54 RBI, 13 doubles and 11 home runs while Machovec leads the team with 40 runs scored. The pitching duo of Jen Larsen and Melissa Tillett have led Northern Iowa from the mound this season. Larsen is with a 2.07 ERA and 68 strikeouts in innings pitched while Tillett has a 3.77 ERA with 64 strikeouts in 96.2 innings pitched. THE COACHES: Gayle Blevins is in her 22nd season at Iowa, compiling a record and is in her 30-year tenure as a head coach. Ryan Jacobs is in his second year at the helm of the Northern Iowa Panthers, owning a overall record. Rich Calvert is in his seventh season at Drake and owns a ledger. Calvert served as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa under Blevins from He helped the Hawkeyes to fi ve NCAA Tournament appearances and two Women s College World Series, as well as Big Ten Conference titles in 1997 and Iowa was in his six seasons on staff. DRAKE LEADERS: Bulldog bats are led by sophomore Erin Bly (Frankfort, Ill./ Lincoln Way East) with a.318 average (47-of-148). Junior Elena Leon (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) adds depth to the line-up with a.346 average (43-of-138) and leads the team in runs scored (42), doubles (11), RBI (28) and home runs (11). The pitching duo of sophomores Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) and Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho/Coeur d Alene) has paced the Bulldogs this season. DeLong is with a team-leading 1.88 ERA, innings pitched and 209 strikeouts. Dordel (10-8) has a 3.22 ERA, innings pitched and 138 strikeouts.

Drake scored the tying run in the seventh frame on a Kelsey Kahler (North Liberty, Iowa/Clear Creek-Amana) two-out single, which scored Bridget Shields (Iowa City, Iowa/West). Drake pitcher Jenna DeLong threw out Iowa shortstop Erin Riemersma at home in the tenth inning to keep the Bulldogs in the game. DeLong gave up one hit in three innings in relief of starter Brynne Dordel. Dordel pitched nine innings, striking out six batters while allowing three runs on eight hits. Drake took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when Kristin Birocci singled home Hatfi eld down the left fi eld line. Jaci Faidley drove in Marilyn Buss on a single up the middle, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage. Drake held the Hawkeyes to only one hit in extra innings, a single in the 12th by Summer Downs. Kahler led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-4 with one RBI. April 5, 2008; Cedar Falls, Iowa Drake 10, Northern Iowa 3; Drake 15, Northern Iowa 7 April 6, 2008; Cedar Falls, Iowa Drake 11, Northern Iowa 10 Ten innings and 25 runs proved to be more than enough for the Drake softball team to sweep a doubleheader away from Northern Iowa. The Bulldogs took the fi rst game, 10-1, and the second game, Both contests ended in fi ve innings due to run rule. Drake hit a combined eight home runs in the doubleheader. Susan Slycord led the way for the Bulldogs with three home runs, including two in the fi rst game. In the fi rst game Drake Jaci Faidley hit her fi rst of two home runs in the opening inning to put the Bulldogs on top 2-0 in the fi rst inning. Kelsey Kahler followed Faidley in kind in the second inning by hitting a two-run shot over the fence in left. Slycord added with a solo home run to center fi eld to give the Bulldogs the 5-0 advantage after two. Drake scored three more runs in the third inning before Carrie Hatfield led off the fourth with a double and scored on Slycord s second home run of the day. Along with Faidley, Slycord and Kahler, Kristin Birocci recorded two hits apiece. Brynne Dordel threw 3.2 innings, while allowing only two hits and striking out fi ve batters. Birocci went 4-4 with six RBI and three runs scored to lead the Bulldogs at the plate in game two. Drake out-hit the Panthers 26-9 on the day and committed no errors in the fi eld. Dordel earned the second win of the day pitching in relief of starter Mandy Osborn (Blair, Neb./Blair). In the third game of the series, Drake powered back with six runs in the fi nal innings to erase a 10-5 defi cit en route to claiming a win. Jenna DeLong saved the day for the Bulldogs in the top of the seventh by hitting a one-out two-run home run over the left fi eld fence, giving Drake its fi rst lead of the day, The Panthers opened the game with six runs in the fi rst two innings before Jaci Faidley doubled through the left side to drive in Carrie Hatfield sparking the Bulldogs fi ve-run third inning.

Elena Leon hit her own home run the next at bat, a solo shot to left fi eld to pull the Bulldogs within one run, 6-5. After giving up four unanswered runs to UNI in the fourth, Mollohan doubled-home Faidley to kick off a three run fi fth inning, bringing the Bulldogs within two runs, Elena Leon singled to drive in Bridget Shields before Jenna DeLong got caught in a run down which plated Leon capping the three run frame. Marilyn Buss singled home Kelsey Kahler in the sixth inning to move the Bulldogs within one run of Northern Iowa, Mollohan had a career high three hits and her fi rst multiple RBI game (4). The Bulldogs out hit the Panthers, 14-11,while committing one error. DeLong earned the win in the circle for Drake, pitching 3.2 innings, while giving up only one hit and striking out seven batters. Wichita State 3, Drake 2 Sophomore Erin Bly and junior Carrie Hatfield each hit a home run in the fourth inning en route to the Bulldogs 5-1 win in the fi rst game of a doubleheader at Wichita State Saturday. The Shockers took the second game, 3-2, in nine innings. Sophomore Jenna DeLong pitched her 17th complete game of the season, allowing fi ve hits and striking out 12 over seven innings. Freshman Torey Craddock (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) led the Bulldogs with two hits while Bly and Hatfi eld had three and two RBI, respectively. Drake scored fi ve runs in the fourth inning, starting with junior Bridget Shields double to left center fi eld. Craddock followed with a single through the left side, advancing Shields to third. Bly put Drake on the board with a three-run home run to center fi eld that scored Shields and Craddock. Molly McClelland (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) singled to center fi eld and Hatfi eld hit her fi rst home run of the season, giving the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead they would hold for the rest of the game. In game two of the doubleheader, Wichita State took a 2-0 lead after one inning. McClelland hit her fi rst career home run in the second inning, bringing the Bulldogs within one, 2-1. Drake tied the game in the sixth inning on Bly s RBI single to center fi eld that scored Shields, who reached base on a hit by pitch to start the inning. Wichita State scored the winning run in the ninth inning off two hits and one Drake error. The Bulldogs had four hits in the game with singles from Bly, DeLong and McClelland and a double from junior Kelsey Kahler. DeLong collected the loss, allowing four hits and one run and striking out eight over 5.1 innings. Drake lost the third game of the three-game series at Wichita State, 3-2. Sophomore Erin Bly hit her second home run in as many days to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The Shockers answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and one run in the bottom of the fi fth inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs scored one run in the sixth inning but fell short in their rally. Junior Bridget Shields doubled to right fi eld and scored on an error by the shortstop. Drake was held to four hits and stranded four runners while the Shockers collected nine hits and left 10 runners on base. Sophomore Jenna DeLong struck out six and allowed two earned runs in six innings.

STREAKING: There have been two double-digit hitting streaks this season by the Bulldogs. The seasons longest streak belongs to Torey Craddock, who hit safely in 14 games earlier in the campaign. Erin Bly hit safely in 12 consecutive games and is currently in the middle of a fi ve-game hitting steak. MULTIPLES: Drake players have recorded multiple-rbi games 37 times this season with Elena Leon leading the way with eight multiple-rbi games. Leon has collected two RBI four times, three RBI three times and four RBI once. Erin Bly and Leon lead the way with 11 multiple-hit games apiece. Bridget Shields has nine multiple hit games and as a team, Drake has recorded 55 multiple-hit games. WALK THIS WAY: Drake has collected 138 walks this season, breaking the school record of 135 walks registered last season. Leading the march to fi rst base is Elena Leon with 31, followed by sophomore Molly McClelland with 20, Jenna DeLong with 15, Carrie Hatfield with 14 and Torey Craddock with 13. WHY DON T WE STEAL AWAY: Drake has stolen 53 bases this season, topping the 2008 season total of 41. Elena Leon leads the team with 12 steals, more than double her output from last spring (5). DEPENDABLE: Erin Bly has hit safely in 33 of Drake s 48 games and has had 11 multiple-hit games and seven multiple-rbi outings this season. Earlier this season she had a 12-game hit streak and she is in the midst of a fi ve-game hit streak. HOLDING THE LEAD: Drake is 20-5 this season when leading after four innings. The numbers improve to 23-3 when leading after fi ve innings and 22-1 when leading after six innings. TAKING THE LEAD: Leadoff hitter, junior Elena Leon leads Drake in 12 categories this season, including slugging percentage (.645), on-base percentage (.448), runs scored (21), RBI (28), doubles (11), triples (1), home runs (11), total bases (89), walks (31), stolen bases (12), steal attempts (16) and total plate appearances (174). PLAYER OF THE WEEK SELECTIONS: Drake has had two MVC Player of the Week selections this season in Elena Leon and Torey Craddock. Leon was honored Feb. 23, after hitting.615 with three home runs, eight runs scored and nine RBI at the New Mexico Invitational. Craddock was selected March 2, going 8-of-15 for a.533 average with three RBI, two runs scored and three stolen bases at the UNLV Tournament NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP HERE: With 17 wins this season sophomore pitcher Jenna DeLong has more than doubled her win total of seven from last season. DeLong has 209 strikeouts this spring compared to 71 in 2008 and she has thrown 100+ more innings than last year (182.1 compared to 77.2). DeLong is also fourth on the team with a.275 average this season, going 36-of-131, topping last seasons totals of a.220 average, 82 at bats and 18 hits.
