The Salukis face fifth-seeded Evansville on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Eck Stadium in Wichita, Kan. SIU goes to the MVC Tournament for the 28th time in school history. The Salukis are all-time in MVC Tournament games. SIU is making its 12th conference tournament in 16 years under head coach Dan Callahan. Callahan s teams are in postseason play, with the 2003 and 2004 clubs finishing runner-up to Wichita State. SIU has not won a MVC regular season or tournament title since That year, the Salukis went overall and 14-6 in league play, won the conference tournament and advanced to the NCAA Regional where they were eliminated by San Diego State. Since then, the closest SIU came to winning a MVC Tournament was when it finished second in both 2003 and The Salukis went undefeated through their first three games before falling twice to Wichita State in the championship round of those tournaments. SIU has never gone to a MVC Tournament higher than a three-seed in 12 trips under head coach Dan Callahan. Callahan s clubs were seeded third in 1996, 2003 and 2005; fourth in 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2010; fifth in 1997, 2006, 2008 and 2009; and sixth in The Salukis were seeded third and fourth when they finished runner-up in the 2003 and 2004 tournaments, respectively. Going back to 1981, the Salukis have been the No. 1 seed twice (1981 and 1984), the No. 2 seed twice; third five times; fourth five times; fifth six times; and No. 6 three times. SIU has won a total of five MVC Tournament titles (1976, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1990), all of which came under Richard Itchy Jones. Jones guided the Salukis to a record and three College World Series appearances from SIU s five titles are fourth-most among current league members. Wichita State (17), Bradley (6) and Indiana State (6) rank ahead of the Dawgs. Head coach Dan Callahan is a combined 9-22 against Wichita State (1-11), Missouri State (3-5), Creighton (2-2), Evansville (2-3) and Indiana State (1-1) at the MVC Tournament. Callahan has never faced Illinois State or Bradley in the postseason. Callahan is 2-3 against Evansville in the MVC Tournament and the last time the two school met in the postseason was in The Purple Aces took that game 10-0, but SIU won 10-9 in 2005 and 11-1 in In 1996, the first-ever meeting between SIU and Evansville in the Valley Tournament, the Purple Aces defeated the Dawgs Those 29 runs given up are the most allowed in a game in school history. 4 this season. The Dawgs started the year off with a 2-6 record and stood at 5-11 after a four-game losing streak from March Southern rebounded by winning 10-of- 13 games from March 19-April 6 and that stretch was capped off with a six-game winning streak to get its overall record at That was the first time all year the Dawgs had a winning record. SIU didn t stay above.500 for long and a 2-8 record in its next 10 games put its record down at Southern s five-game losing streak in that time (April 14-20) is its longest of the season. Much like they did in 2009 when they won eight of their final nine league games, the Salukis finished the 2010 regular season on fire. SIU has won 11 of its last 16 games heading into the MVC Tournament. All-Conference Honorees Southern Illinois sophomore first baseman Chris Serritella was the only Salukis named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference first team. This is the 56th time in program history that a Saluki was named first team All- MVC and the 20th time under head coach Dan Callahan. Joining Serritella on the allconference lists were second team honorees Chris Murphy (OF), Nathan Forer (SP) and Bryant George (RP). Tyler Bullock (DH), Austin Montgomery (UT) and Randy Hoelscher (SP) were named honorable mention All-MVC. For George, the school s all-time leader in career appearances and saves, this marks the third time in four years he has garnered all-conference recognition. He was a first team pick in 2009 and an honorable mention selection in George and Bullock were both first team preseason all-conference picks this year and Bullock follows his 2009 first team nod as a designated hitter with his honorable mention selection this year. Forer, who was also a first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection, capped off his fine senior season with his Interviews Please arrange all interviews of student-athletes and coaches through Jason Clay. Hoelscher s 3-0 record and strikeout-to-walk ratio (21-to-4) in conference play earned him a spot on the honorable mention list. Bullock Powers His Way into Record Books Senior catcher Tyler Bullock enters the 2010 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament having hit three home runs in his last two games. His power surge moved him ahead of Chris Serritella, who has led the team in homers since Feb. 28, for the team home run lead. Bullock now has 14 home runs this year and 31 for his career, as he became just the second Saluki in program history to hit more than 30 home runs. He is now five home runs shy of Robert Jones ( ) school record of 36. Bullock, who led the Dawgs with six homers in 2008 and 11 in 2009, is also looking to join Jones as the only Salukis to lead the club in home runs three years in a row. Bullock has nine RBIs in his last three games. Five of those came in last Friday s game at Missouri State, when set a new career-high for runs driven in. He also hit two home runs in the game, giving him his second two-homer game this year and fourth of his career. George Gets SIU Appearance Record With two appearances last weekend at Missouri State, senior closer Bryant George moved ahead of Daniel Wells ( ) for the most appearances in school history. George made his 98th and record-breaking 99th appearance against the Bears. He recorded his 30th career save as he tied Wells school record on Friday, but drew the loss in his record-breaking appearance on Saturday. George threw 2.2 innings with three strikeouts, but gave up the winning hit in the 10th inning. That run was the first he s allowed in his last nine appearances. George, who also is SIU s all-time saves leader, has five saves in nine appearances this May. He has a 5.40 ERA this year with 46 strikeouts in 46.2 innings pitched. 5 12th in School History With his one hit in Saturday s regular season finale, sophomore first baseman Chris Serritella became the 12th Saluki in program history with 80 or more hits in a season. Serritella s 63 RBIs are tied for the fourthmost in a year in program history, his 13 home runs are tied for the seventh-most and his 138 total bases are the fourth-most. The Glenview, Ill. native that is SIU s lone first team all-conference selection ranks second in the MVC this year with 19 multiple-rbi games and his 20-game hitting streak from April 6 through May 15 is the third longest recorded by a Valley player this year. In 24 games from April 6-May 18, Serritella hit an astonishing.441. He had 41 hits in that time with 23 runs scored, 11 doubles, four home run and 30 RBIs. However, this past weekend at Missouri State he finally came back down to earth. He went just 3-for-15 with five strikeouts, only two RBIs and he didn t have a single extra-base hit. After a couple of rough starts, at least by his standards, Forer returned to his top form in his last outing at Missouri State. Against Middle Tennessee on May 7, Forer allowed a season-high seven earned runs in his shortest start of the year (3.1 innings). He drew the loss in his next start on May 14, which came to Evansville when he allowed four earned runs in six innings. Asides from those two starts, the senior ace had only yielded more than two earned runs in one of his first six starts. This past Thursday, Forer returned to his dominant self, as he only surrendered one run in seven innings against the Bears. That was his fifth start this season where he yielded one or no earned runs. His ERA dropped down to 2.93 as he picked up his third win on the year. Stalter Getting Hot at the Right Time Senior shortstop Michael Stalter has raised his batting average 40 points since his last at-bat in SIU s April 28 game at Eastern Illinois. That AB was a crucial one for the Dawgs, as his two-run homer in the 10th inning won the game for the Salukis in Charleston, Ill. That was Stalter s first home run of the season and he has hit two more since that game at EIU. Both home runs came last week, as he belted one against Saint Louis on May 18 and hit another in the first game of the Missouri State series. Stalter has the second-highest batting average (.386) on the team in the last 15 games where he has hit five doubles, driven in 11 runs and has a.632 slugging percentage. He also has five multiple-hit games in the last 15 outings and on May 20 at MSU, Stalter matched his season- and career-high with four hits. He went 4-for-5 at the plate with a double, home run, one RBI and he tied his career-high with four runs scored. Last year Stalter hit.295 (one point above his current batting average), but was SIU s top hitter in the 2009 MVC Tournament. In the three games (two losses, one win), Stalter went 6-for-11. Of those six hits, three went for extra-bases (two doubles, Southern Illinois Players of the week -May Tyler Bullock Sr. DH/C DuQuoin, Ill. Bullock hit three home runs and had nine RBIs in four games last week where he led the Salukis to a 3-1 record. In the second game of the series at MSU, Bullock hit two home runs and had a career-high five RBIs. It was his second two-homer game this year and fourth of his career. His second homer of the game broke a 5-all tie in the seventh and proved to be the winning run for the Dawgs in the 6-5 victory. Then on Saturday in the series finale, he hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to bring SIU back from a 5-3 deficit and move the game into extra innings. Bullock now has 14 homers on the season and 31 in his career, as he became just the second Saluki in program history to hit more than 30 home runs in a career. Nathan Forer Sr. RHP Ontario, Canada Saluki senior closer Bryant George closed out SIU s two wins against Evansville to pick up saves No. five and six on the season. He came into both games with a two-run lead each time and did not allow a single run. George only gave up one hit in the two games and had two strikeouts. salukis-at-a-glance Overall Record Home Record 18-9 Road Record Neutral Site Record 0-2 Extra Inning Games 5-0 Last Five Games 4-1 Last 10 Games 5-5 All-Time Record (.599)-65th season Under Dan Callahan (.498)-16th season missouri valley conference (as of 5/22) Conference Overall Team W L W L Wichita State Illinois State Indiana State Southern Illinois Evansville Creighton Bradley Missouri State PRESEASON COACHES POLL Team (First-Place Votes) Points Wichita State (7) 57 Missouri State 52 Creighton (1) 50 Illinois State 38 Southern Illinois 33 Indiana State 29 Evansville 16 Bradley 13 Hitting streaks Hitting Streaks Longest Current 21 Serritella, Chris Johnson, Nick Murphy, Chris Pinnon, Blake Stalter, Michael Bullock, Tyler Sivertsen, Jordan 6-10 Harding, Brock Montgomery, Austi 5-8 Bajer, Brian 5-5 Lepore, Tony Roberts, Aaron Neece, Wes 1 - multiple hit games Multi-Hit Games Total 17 Pinnon, Blake Serritella, Chris Murphy, Chris Stalter, Michael Roberts, Aaron Bullock, Tyler Johnson, Nick Montgomery, Austi Lepore, Tony Bajer, Brian Harding, Brock Sivertsen, Jordan Neece, Wes multiple RBI games Multi-RBI Games Total 21 Serritella, Chris Bullock, Tyler Roberts, Aaron Pinnon, Blake Murphy, Chris Montgomery, Austi Stalter, Michael Bajer, Brian Johnson, Nick Harding, Brock Sivertsen, Jordan Lepore, Tony

Hoelscher to Start SIU s Second Game in Valley Tournament Junior left-handed pitcher Randy Hoelscher will start SIU s second game in the Valley Tournament. Hoelscher has been Southern s most successful pitcher in MVC games, where he has a 3-0 record and a 4.24 ERA. The Salukis have won four of the six Valley games that he started. The Springfield College transfer had a slow start in his Division I career. In his first four starts he had a 0-2 record and ERA. Since then he has been very commanding on the hill and has shaved 9.71 points off his ERA. In his last eight starts, Hoelscher has only walked five of the 223 batters that he s faced and has given up no walks in five of those eight starts. The lefty s had a 5-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio since March 27 and is coming off his season-best six strikeouts that he posted against Missouri State last Friday. Hoelscher is the only Saluki pitcher that has started in every game he s appeared in (12) and he s thrown the second-most innings on the team (61.0) Numerical Roster First of the Year Southern Illinois center fielder Chris Murphy led off the regular season finale with a home run at Missouri State. It marked his first homer of the season and the first time he s led off a game by going yard. Murphy and Michael Stalter tied for the team lead, as they both went 6-for-14 in the final series before the MVC Tournament. In the opening game of the MSU series, Murphy went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and he matched his season-high with three RBIs. After a rough start in May that saw him go 4-for-31 in the first eight games of the month, Murphy has since rebounded and is batting.375 with seven runs scored and six driven in during the last five games leading up to the tournament. Murphy is one of three players with 20 or more multiple-hit games this year. He had two or more hits in each of his first six games this season and had 10 multi-hit games in his first 16 games. As Murphy has gone this season, so has Southern Illinois. The Dawgs have a 15-6 record when he has at least two hits in a game. Murphy is batting.315 in the 28 Saluki victories this season with 18 RBIs and 11 doubles, but hits.295 with 10 RBIs and four doubles in the 27 losses. However, his.295 batting average in games lost is the highest on the team. No. Name Cl. Pos. B/T Wt. Ht. Hometown (Last School) 2 Chris Murphy Jr. OF L/R Sewickley, Pa. 7 The Walk-On with the Big Numbers Saluki junior second baseman Blake Pinnon, who walked on at SIU in the middle of fall ball, leads the team with 24 multiple-hit games this season and he brings a sevengame hitting streak with him to Wichita for the Valley Tournament. He is batting.433 in the last seven games with two doubles, one RBI and has scored nine runs. Pinnon, who never hit higher than.294 in junior college, is second on the team in batting average (.345), hits (69) and doubles (16). He is also tied for second in RBIs (44) and is third in home runs (eight). Bajer Takes Over Behind the Plate Sophomore catcher Brian Bajer has taken over as the primary catcher for the Salukis. He has started behind the plate in 14 of the last 25 games and nine of the last 15 games before the Valley Tournament. Bajer s production at the plate has really stepped up over the course of the last 15 games. He is batting.351 in that time with two doubles, a home run, six runs scored and seven driven in. SIU has won nine out of the last 10 times he has been the starting catcher. The Butler transfer, who had to sit out last seasons due to NCAA transfer regulations, is batting.333 this year with three doubles, four home runs and 16 RBI in 34 games played. Big Innings Southern Illinois has scored five or more runs in an inning 13 times this year, but opponents have scored five or more runs in 13 different innings as well. The most runs that SIU scored in an inning this year is the 10 they put up in the sixth inning of its March 30, 15-3 win over UT Martin in Carbondale. Indiana State scored 12 runs in the second inning in its 14-4 win over the Dawgs in Carbondale on April 23. This-N-That The 2010 season marks the 20th anniversary since SIU s last MVC regular season and MVC Tournament Championship. That year the Dawgs went and 4-1 in the conference tournament that was held in Wichita. Southern Illinois has hit 14 doubles in its last six games. The Salukis have hit at least one double in 47 of 55 games this year and have had two or more doubles in 31 of 55 games this season. Eight of senior catcher/designated hitter Tyler Bullock s 14 home runs this year came in Valley play. The Salukis need two more wins to have their 26th, 30-win season in program history. SIU came into the year having won 30 or more ball games in four of the last five seasons and the one year the Dawgs didn t net 30 wins was in 2009 (24-28 overall record). Head coach Dan Callahan enters the MVC Tournament with 595 career wins in 22 seasons as a Division I head coach (16 years at SIU; six at Eastern Illinois). Southern Illinois has hit 52 home runs hits year, which marks just the fourth time in the last 20 years that the Dawgs have hit at least 50 in a season. This is the most times SIU has gone yard since they hit 73 homers in Season Home Runs Total (Last 20 Years) Year Home Runs Year Home Runs * * School Record Career Hitting Stats in the Month of May Player B/Avg.
