The Billikens face Eastern Illinois at 1 p.m. Friday, Evansville at 3 p.m. Saturday and Butler in the tournament finale at 11 a.m. Sunday. About the Billikens Saint Louis is 2-3 on the season and is coming off a 7-5 defeat at Indiana State on Tuesday. The Billikens, who have 20 newcomers on the 2009 roster, opened the season last weekend in California and came away with wins against CSU Bakersfield and then-nationally ranked UC Santa Barbara. Senior Ryan Bennett, who will not play this weekend due to an injury, leads the team in hitting with a.421 average. Junior college transfer Danny Brock is hitting.385, while junior catcher Ben Braaten has a.364 average with a team-leading eight RBIs. Junior J.D. Dunn hits.353 and leads the team with four doubles. The Billikens starting rotation for the weekend is senior right-handers Scott Turmail and Dave Sever on Friday and Saturday, respectively, and sophomore left-hander Andrew Buckham on Sunday. All will be making their second starts of the season. Right-hander Chaz Salembier, the reigning Atlantic 10 Conference Pitcher of the Week, is 1-0 with a save in 2-2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Recapping the Indiana State Game The Billikens rallied late but were unable to overcome Indiana State in the Sycamores home opener. Down 5-2 heading into the eighth, freshman Lucas Calderon lifted a two-run home run to pull the Billikens to within one. However, ISU notched two runs in the bottom half of the eighth, and a Ben Braaten solo shot in the top of the ninth was all the Bills could muster as they fell 7-5. Scouting the Panthers Eastern Illinois (2-1) participated in the NCAA Tournament a season ago after winning the Ohio Valley Conference. It returns eight position starters and three starting pitchers from that club. EIU hasn t played since last weekend when it took two of three games at Southeastern Louisiana. Brett Nommensen, a first-team All-Conference selection last season, leads the team with a.625 average, which includes a pair of home runs. Jordan Tokarz, the MVP of last season s OVC Tournament, hits.385 with two homers and a team-best seven RBIs. Sophomore righthander Josh Mueller is the scheduled starter for Friday s game against the Billikens. He earned a no-decision

2 Billiken Baseball Game Notes in the first game of the Southeastern Louisiana series after throwing 3-2/3 innings and allowing two runs on six hits. Eastern Illinois holds a series advantage. Scouting the Purple Aces Evansville (0-3) is in search of its first win of the year after dropping a pair of games at East Tennessee State last weekend and a 13-2 decision at UT Martin Wednesday. The Aces, who went overall last season, are beginning a new era in 2009 with former player Wes Carroll taking over the coaching reins. The Aces have four players hitting at or above the.400 mark, including Alex Acheson who boasts a.556 average. Cody Fick posts a.455 average and leads the team in homers (2) and RBIs (5). Evansville s pitching staff has run into trouble early on, yielding an average of 12.7 runs per game. The Billikens are slated to face John Foley on Saturday. Against East Tennessee State, he allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits in three innings of work. Evansville leads the all-time series against the Billikens Scouting the Bulldogs Butler (1-0) kicked off its 2009 campaign Wednesday with a 12-2 victory over Marian College. Last season, the Bulldogs registered a overall record and a Horizon League mark of 7-17.Six starters return from last year s team, including Colin Ziegel who smashed a grand slam against Marian. Butler is scheduled to throw right-hander Jeff Sinkiewicz against the Bills on Sunday. Last year, he led all Butler starters with a 4.95 ERA and 63.2 innings pitched. The Bills and Bulldogs have met on the diamond 20 times, with Butler holding a 12-8 series lead. SLU Skipper Saint Louis head coach Darin Hendrickson is in his second season as the Billikens skipper. Last year, he led SLU to 24 victories, the most ever by a firstyear head coach in program history. In addition, the Billikens had two players Casey Moore and Dave Sever selected in Major League Baseball s First-Year Player Draft, marking the first time since 1997 that two Billikens were drafted in the same year. Hendrickson, who picked up his 500th career victory last season in a home win against Fordham, has a 13-year career record of with stints at Central Missouri, St. Louis Community College-Forest Park and Fontbonne. Also in their second seasons are assistant coaches Kevin Moulder and Will Bradley and volunteer assistant Danny Jackson. Venue Change Due to continued facility enhancements at The Billiken Sports Center, next Tuesday s game against Southeast Missouri State will be played at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill., the home of the Frontier League s Gateway Grizzlies. First pitch is still slated for 2 p.m. Admission into GCS Ballpark is $5, and tickets will be available at the gate. New Look Billikens Saint Louis has had nine field players and six pitchers make their debuts in a Billiken uniform this season. Two of the Bills top three hitters, junior college transfers Danny Brock and Ben Braaten, are newcomers. Sophomore lefthander Andrew Buckham, who his penciled in to start Sunday s contest against Butler, and junior right-hander Bryant Cotton have already earned starts on the mound this season. Making it Count A pair of Billikens have posted home runs for their first career hits. Freshman Zach Miller homered in his first collegiate at-bat last weekend at CSU Bakersfield, while Lucas Calderon hit a two-run shot against Indiana State for his first hit. Outfield Patrol The Billikens have found early consistency in their outfield, fielding the same trio in all five games. Junior Cody Cotter drew the starts in left, junior J.D. Dunn started all four games in center and junior Andrew Guerra earned starting nods in right field. Climbing the Charts Senior right-hander Dave Sever, who is scheduled to start Saturday against Evansville, is moving up the career strikeout chart in the Billiken record book. He drew the start in the first game of last Saturday s doubleheader against CSU Bakersfield and proceeded to fan eight batters in seven innings of work. Sever became the sixth pitcher in SLU history to record 200 strikeouts in a career and is sixth on SLU s all-time chart with 207 career Ks, 30 away from taking over fourth place. The program s all-time leader in strikeouts is Ryan Bird ( ), a current member of the St. Louis Cardinals organization who fanned 286 batters in his SLU career. Picking Up Where He Left Off Senior shortstop Ryan Bennett, who hit a team-best.357 last season, leads the team in hitting through the first four games at.421. He hit safely in all four games last weekend, including a career-high tying four hits in the second game of the CSU Bakersfield doubleheader. Be the Ball, Danny Junior first baseman Danny Brock had an impressive first weekend in a Billiken uniform. The Northeastern (Colo.) Community College transfer went 3-for-4 in his debut in helping the Bills to an 8-7 win in their opener, then recorded hits in both games of Saturday s doubleheader against CSUB. He leads all newcomers with a.385 average. Been There, Done That Junior catcher Ben Braaten was the hero of last Sunday s come-from-behind win against UC Santa Barbara after recording four RBIs in the final two innings. A junior college transfer from Iowa Western, he has started and hit safely in all five games this season. He is third on the team with a.364 average and leads the team with eight RBIs. Power Numbers Junior right fielder Andrew Guerra hit two home runs in a game for the first time in his career last Friday at CSU Bakersfield. His solo shots in the fourth and eighth innings helped propel the Bills to an 8-7 victory over the Roadrunners. Guerra, who last season established a school record with 21 doubles, is hitting.263 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Double Trouble Junior center fielder J.D. Dunn is hitting.353 and leads the team with four doubles. For the season, he is tied with Ryan Bennett with five runs scored to lead the team. All that Chaz Senior right-hander Chaz Salembier was effective in his 2-2/3 innings of work last weekend and drew A-10 Pitcher of the Week accolades for the first time in his career. Against CSU Bakersfield, he was faced with a precarious situation when he entered in the bottom of the ninth with the potential winning run at the plate and just one out, but he proceeded to strike out the next two hitters to earn the save. Against UC Santa Barbara, Salembier worked two scoreless innings and allowed just two hits to help the Bills to their 8-7 victory. Great Scott Senior right-hander Scott Turmail, who is slated to work the tournament opener Friday against Eastern Illinois, started the season opener against CSU Bakersfield and worked 5-2/3 innings allowing three runs on eight hits. He walked just one and fanned two. His two-year career record stands at 8-6. He has struck out 64 batters in his career and walked 12. Down the Road Saint Louis opens an 11-game home stand next weekend, beginning with a Tuesday matchup at GCS Ballpark (Sauget, Ill.) against the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks. The Billikens then welcome Chicago State to The Billiken Sports Center for a three-game set beginning Friday, March 6.

8 Billiken Baseball Coaching Staff Darin Hendrickson Head Coach Darin Hendrickson is in his second season as head coach of the Saint Louis University baseball program. Named SLU s skipper in July 2007, he has delivered success at every level during his 13-year career. Hendrickson s presence in the Saint Louis dugout paid immediate dividends in The Billikens registered 20-plus wins for just the fourth time in the last 10 years. It is also just the second time since 1996 that the Bills posted at least 24 victories. In addition, Hendrickson s 24 wins in his initial season are the highest in school history for a firstyear head coach. Two Billikens were drafted in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player draft, marking the first time two Bills were taken in the same draft since That is a continuation of a consistent trend for Hendrickson, who has coached 23 players who have been selected in the MLB draft. Last season, Hendrickson achieved his 500th career victory with a 10-8 win against Fordham. Combining his one season at SLU and four years each at Central Missouri, Forest Park CC and Fontbonne, Hendrickson has a 13-year career coaching record of Throughout his career, Hendrickson has attained seven regional Coach of the Year titles and five conference Coach of the Year honors. His teams have missed the national tournament just four times in 13 years and have collected the conference regular-season and/or tournament championship five times. Prior to coming to SLU, Hendrickson led Central Missouri to three conference regular-season and tournament championships and twice had his team reach the semifinal round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. In 2004, the Mules posted a school-record 57 wins, won a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship semifinals. Hendrickson s club duplicated its effort in 2005, with a 57-9 record, its sixth regional championship and a return trip to the NCAA semifinals. In 2006, Hendrickson earned MIAA Coach of the Year honors for his club s record and the conference regular-season title. During his four seasons at the reins, the Mules posted a record (.820). Prior to taking over at Central Missouri, Hendrickson guided St. Louis Community College Forest Park to four NJCAA Super Regional championship games. His 2001 club advanced to the NJCAA World Series and finished the year with a slate, earning Hendrickson Midwest Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC) and District Coach of the Year honors. A record in 2003, including a 14-4 league mark, was good enough to earn the Highlanders the No. 1 ranking in NJCAA D-II the final five weeks of the season. In four seasons at Forest Park, Hendrickson compiled a record (.677). In addition to his coaching duties at Forest Park, he also served as the athletics director. Hendrickson got his first head coaching experience at Fontbonne University, starting that program in In just the program s third season, the 1998 Griffins went 41-7, won the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) title with a 16-1 record and advanced to the NCAA Division III Central Regional. Hendrickson was named SLIAC and Region Coach of the Year. He left Fontbonne with a record (.700) over four seasons. Hendrickson served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, following his graduation in As a player, he earned first-team All-Region status both seasons on the mound for the Cougars and ranks second in school history with 10 wins and 111-1/3 innings pitched in With a career 18-5 record, he is fourth in school history in career winning percentage (.783) and 12th in career victories. Hendrickson, a native of Granite City, Ill., earned both his bachelor s and master s degrees from SIUE. His master s in sociology was conferred in 1995, following his bachelor s in political science in He and his wife, Laura, have three children, Reid, Paige and Andrew. Assistant coach Kevin Moulder #20 Assistant coach Will Bradley #3 Assistant coach Danny Jackson #22
