5 Head Coach Doug Schreiber 14TH YEAR 2012 Big Ten Coach of the Year CAREER RECORD (.539) BIG TEN RECORD (.528) Biographical Information Full Name...Douglas Lee Schreiber Date of Birth...Aug. 25, 1963 Place of Birth...La Porte, Ind. Education... Purdue University, B.A.,... Communications College Career... Purdue, Wife...Sarah Coaching Experience Purdue Present, Head Coach Arizona St , Assistant Coach Notre Dame , Assistant Coach Butler , Assistant Coach Ball State , Graduate Assistant Since Doug Schreiber was named Purdue s head baseball coach on May 29, 1998, the Boilermakers have become a major force in the Big Ten Conference and have made big strides on a national level. Currently in his 14th year as the head coach at Purdue, he now owns program records for overall wins and conference victories. In 2007, Schreiber became the third head coach in Purdue baseball history to surpass the 500-games mark as the Boilermakers head man. Dave Alexander, whom Schreiber played for from 1983 to 1986, owns the record for most games coached at Purdue with 792 over 14 seasons. Schreiber broke Alexander s all-time wins record (407) April 15, 2012, and is on pace to break the games coached benchmark in Purdue s 37 overall wins in 2011 tied the program s single season record and were the most in the Big Ten. Despite being picked eighth in the preseason coaches poll, the Boilers finished third in the league with a conference record, just one game shy of first, and reached the Big Ten Tournament for the fourth consecutive year and seventh time in the last eight seasons. The four straight tourney appearances represent the longest active streak in the league as well as a program high. The program s 58 Big Ten wins over the last four years are also the most in the league. Purdue led the Big Ten in numerous statistical categories in 2011, highlighted by runs scored, doubles, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, sacrifice flies, saves and strikeouts. The Boilermakers drew the most walks at the plate and issued the fewest number of free passes on the mound. Six Boilers were recognized as all-conference performers, matching the second-highest total in program history. Kevin Plawecki and Barrett Serrato were named First Team, Tyler Spillner and Nick Wittgren Second Team and Cameron Perkins and Stephen Talbott Third Team. With Serrato, Spillner and Talbott all honored as outfielders, it marked the first time 1991 that three Purdue outfielders were named all-conference in the same season. The 2010 season saw the Boilermakers post 33 victories, the program s most since Purdue navigated a hotlycontested Big Ten race that saw all six league tournament-qualifying teams finish within three games of first place. The Boilermakers reached the Big Ten Tourney for the eighth time under Schreiber, including six of the last seven seasons. Purdue eliminated Northwestern and Indiana from the 2010 tournament before bowing out. The Boilers have won at least one game at the Big Ten Tournament in seven of their eight appearances under Schreiber. The 2010 Boilermakers posted new school records for hits (636) and runs per game (7.2) at the plate and led the Big Ten in strikeouts (435) and batting average against (.276) on the mound. Purdue went 15-6 at home and 9-2 in midweek action, compiling a mark after opening the season 1-6. Individually, Matt Bischoff was honored as a First Team All-Big Ten starting pitcher. He led the Big Ten with 10 wins and 95 strikeouts and in the process became the first player in program history to be a four-time All-Big Ten honoree. He established new single-season and career strikeout marks in his final season as a Boilermaker. Bischoff and fellow pitcher Kevin Cahill were both selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Schreiber has coached 54 All-Big Ten Conference selections, including 18 who were named to the conference s First Team, and has had players selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on 23 occasions. One of Schreiber s Boilermakers has led the Big Ten in hitting in four out of the last seven years. Prior to becoming the head coach at Purdue, Schreiber spent four seasons ( ) as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under Pat Murphy at Arizona State University. Schreiber helped guide Arizona State to the College World Series and the national championship game in A year earlier, the Sun Devils finished as regional runners-up to Miami, and were two outs away from going to the College World Series. All four of Schreiber s recruiting classes at ASU were nationally ranked, including the 1995 class which was ranked No. 1 in the country and the 1996 class, which was tabbed the third best in the nation. Before going to ASU, Schreiber served as an assistant coach for Murphy at the University of Notre Dame in That season, the Fighting Irish finished and ended the season just two wins shy of Omaha, finishing as regional runners-up to Auburn. Schreiber began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Pat Quinn at Ball State University for two seasons ( ) and spent one year (1993) as an assistant at Butler University. A native of LaPorte, Ind., Schreiber was a four-year starter ( ) at second base for the Boilermakers. During his career, Purdue posted a mark and established a school-record 37 victories his senior season when he was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection. Schreiber still ranks among Purdue s career leaders in a variety of categories, including top-six ranking in four categories. Schreiber ranks first all-time in walks (132), fourth in runs scored (159), tied for third in games played (220) and tied for sixth in triples (9). During the final homestand in the 48-year history of Lambert Field, the Boilers tied the single-season wins record (37) for the second year in a row and then broke the record in the next game. May 12, Purdue defeated Michigan in a game televised live on the Big Ten Network to clinch at least a share of the Big Ten title for the first time since The Boilermakers clinched the title outright May 17 with a win at Iowa. Purdue is in the Big Ten Tournament for the fifth consecutive year. That represents the longest active streak in the league as well as the longest in program history. The Boilermakers closed out their most-challenging stretch of the season the first weekend of May with an 8-4 record. In four consecutive weekends, the Boilers squared off against Illinois, Nebraska, Michigan State and UCLA. Entering the Illinois series the weekend of April 13-15, Illinois, Nebraska, Michigan State and UCLA were a combined Purdue scored 10 runs in the ninth inning May 6 at UCLA to stun the home fans and steal the series finale, The Boilers trailed 10-5 entering the inning. It was Purdue s first games in the state of California since February 2002, a series against Cal State Northridge. Purdue lost two-of-three at Iowa the final weekend of the regular season, suffereing its first series loss of the year in Big Ten play. The Boilermakers had won eight consecutive league series dating back to last year s sweep of Iowa. But Purdue is now 1-5 in Iowa City in its last two visits, getting swept in BOILERS BATS SIXTH IN THE NATION IN TEAM BATTING AVERAGE ENTERING THE WEEK The Boilermakers entered the week ranked sixth in the nation with a.318 team batting average. Purdue was also seventh in hits and 20th in scoring (6.8 runs per game). Coincidentally, the Boilers are batting.335 in road and neutral-site action (37 games) versus.272 in their 16 home games. But the Purdue pitchers limited the opposition to a.220 batting average against at Lambert Field. The pitching and defense have also been performing well overall. The Boilermakers were 14 nationally in double plays turned. Purdue has now turned 55 double plays. The pitching staff, meanwhile, is averaging only 2.2 walks per nine innings, a total which ranks as the fourth best in the country and a big reason why the Boilers are 13th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.91) and 20th in WHIP (1.20). The 3.17 team ERA is good for 34th nationally. PURDUE CLOSES OUT LAMBERT FIELD IN STYLE Along with clinching its first Big Ten title since 1909 during the final homestand in the history of Lambert FIeld, the Boilers also saved the most dramatic finish of the season for the final innings played at the old ballpark. Purdue defeated Indiana State, 2-1, in 10 innings May 15 in the final game at the program s home field since It was the Boilers third walk-off win at home this season. Sean McHugh tied the ISU game with a two-out, pinchhit home run in the ninth inning and Cameron Perkins won it in the 10th with a line drive to left field. McHugh connected for the first pinch-hit homer by a Boiler since the 2010 regular-season finale. Perkins recorded his third career walk-off RBI, including second this year. The junior is also won of 35 semifinalists for the Dick Howswer Trophy. Plawecki was the only Big Ten catcher among the semifinalists but he s one of three backstops from universities in the state of Indiana to be on the updated watch list. Indiana State s Jeremy Lucas and Notre Dame s Joe Hudson were also among the semifinalists revealed May 16 by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission. Meanwhile, Plawecki is one of only two catchers among the semifinalists for the second year in a row. Florida s Mike Zunino, a leading candidate for Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, is the other two-time semifinalist. From Feb. 26 through April 11, Plawecki reached base safely in 25 consecutive games, the longest single-season streak on the team this year. Entering the final series of the year at Iowa, he has hit safely in every game of a Big Ten series but one (vs. Illinois, April 13-15). Plawecki was listed as a Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft second-round talent in Baseball America s annual draft preview edition that hit newsstands this month. David Miller (Brooks Wallace Award, who advanced to the list of 25), Lance Breedlove (College Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher of the Year, who did not advance to the list of 25) and Nick Wittgren (Stopper of the Year) are the other Boilers on watch lists for prominent national awards. Seven of the 10 runs in scored with two outs. It marked the second time this season the Boilers have posted double-figure runs in an inning (12 runs in the 6th inning at Ball State April 11). Sean McHugh, Angelo Cianfrocco, Ryan Bridges and David Miller all reached base safely twice in the ninth inning as Purdue sent 15 men to the plate. McHugh and Cianfrocco each scored twice. Four walks issued by UCLA closer Scott Griggs ignited the rally. Cameron Perkins beat out an infield single on a grounder to third base with runners on the corners and two outs to plate the game-tying run. It was the second of seven consecutive two-out, run-scoring hits. McHugh followed with a base hit through the left side to knock in the go-ahead run. The Boilers had 12 consecutive productive plate appearances during the rally. Every batter in the lineup had an RBI in the inning. Miller knocked in a run in each of his two trips to the plate. BIG TEN LEADING BOILERS While the offense has generated the majority of the headlines this season, the Purdue pitching and defense has also carried its fair share of the load to help Purdue earn its national ranking. Entering the weekend, the pitching staff has issued the fewest walks (116) in the Big Ten and compiled the a 3.15 team ERA, good for second in the league. The Boilermakers 55 double plays turned, including 49 of the ground ball variety induced by the pitchers, are third most in the league. While leading the league in team batting average (.318), on-base percentage (.385) and doubles (101), Purdue is second to Nebraska in many other offensive categories. The Huskers played two more regular-season games than the Boilers. Purdue has struck out the fewest number of times in the league (244), 25 fewer times than Nebraska (second fewest). Individually, Kevin Plawecki, who is the most difficult batter to strikeout in the Big Ten, enters the weekend leading the league in doubles (20) while ranking second in on-base percentage (.450). He was four nationally in toughest to K entering the week. Cameron Perkins (RBI & runs scored), Stephen Talbott (triples), Blake Mascarello (ERA, average against) and Nick Wittgren (saves) also lead the league in at least one notable statistical category. Mascarello has the seventh best WHIP (0.86) in the country. He was the winning pitcher against Connecticut, Auburn, Murray State (game one), Missouri State, Louisville and Illinois (game three), Nebraska (game one) and Michigan State (game two). He also closed out the series openers at Ohio State and Iowa saves. He has helped the Boilers win the game in all but one of his outings (game four at Wichita State) in which he has taken the mound with Purdue leading. While the lefty has been consistently excellent, his work in the Connecticut (retired 12 of 14 batters), Murray State (13 of 14) and Nebraska (all 13) wins stand out. Mascarello retired 21 consecutive hitters over three appearances from April 15 (vs. Illinois) through April 27 (vs. Michigan State). Mascarello did not allow an earned for nearly a month, going eight straight appearances from April 7 through May 5 without the opposition scoring an earned run. The earned run he was charged with May 6 at UCLA was a runner that scored after he had already left the mount. He retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced in game two of the May 5 doubleheader at UCLA. He scored his 169th career run in the May 9 win against Illinois-Chicago to break the Purdue all-time record. On April 17, Charles scored four times in the win at Illinois-Chicago, surpassing head coach Doug Schreiber (159) on the program s all-time leaderboard. Schreiber graduated in 1986 as the school record holder. The all-time record was held by Jose Rossy (168, ). Kevin Plawecki (39 HBP) has tied the Purdue all-time record for hit by pitch. Coincidentally, even as a cleanup-hitting catcher, Plawecki enters the weekend ranking third in the Big Ten in runs scored (48) this year. Charles was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the second time this season April 30 after he hit safely in all four games and finished the week 9-for-17. He had multiple hits in all three games of the Michigan State series, finishing the weekend 8-for-13. He has reached base safely in 35 straight Big Ten games dating back to last season. Charles joins Daryl Hallada (1999 and 2000), Daniel Underwood (three times in 2003), Eric Wolfe (twice in 2006) and teammate Cameron Perkins (2011 and 2012) as Boilers to win multiple Player of the Week awards during their careers. With Perkins earning Player of the Week recognition April 23, Purdue has had consecutive honorees among field players for the first time since the opening weeks of 2011 (Barrett Serrato and Angelo Cianfrocco) and sixth time in program history. BREEDLOVE NAMED TO PITCHER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST; LAMBERT STREAK SNAPPED Lance Breedlove was among the 51 pitchers nationally named to the initial Pitcher of the Year Watch List. The Pitcher of the Year Award is presented by the College Baseball Hall of Fame and honors the nation s top performer on the mound. Minnesota s TJ Oakes and Breedlove represented the Big Ten Conference on the initial list. Breedlove s six victories have been highlighted by shutout performances against Cincinnati, Penn State and Illinois. He struck out a career-high 11 over seven innings of shutout ball in his season-opening start against Cincinnati. He fanned 10 in a complete-game performance at Ohio State March 24. The senior right-hander took a perfect game into the seventh inning of his two-hit complete game shutout of Penn State March 31, retiring 27 of the 29 batters he faced that day. In his next home start he worked 7 2/3 shutout innings against Illinois. Breedlove s streak of 33 consecutive scoreless innings at Purdue s Lambert Field, which dated back to May 2011, was snapped in the eighth inning of the April 28 win against Michigan State. The Spartans scored three times in the frame on a bases-loaded triple. However, Nick Wittgren gave up the big hit after taking over for Breedlove with one out in eighth inning. The senior pitched seven scoreless innings in his final start of the season at Lambert, retiring 20 of the 21 batters he faced. Therefore, the opposition did not scored while Breedlove was physically on the mound at Lambert Field this year. MILLER NAMED TO BROOKS WALLACE AWARD WATCH LIST David Miller has been one of the team s most consistent performers and the senior was recognized for his all-around good season by being selected to the College Baseball Hall of Fame s Brooks Wallace Award Watch List. The Brooks Wallace Award recognizes the nation s top shortstop. Miller remained on the second edition of the watch list, which featured 25 shortstops. Miller s production at the bottom of the lineup has given Purdue one of the deepest one-throughnine combinations in the country. He enters the Iowa series with a.328 batting average, 15 extrabase hits and 29 RBI. He has drawn 19 walks versus only 14 strikeouts. The senior has recorded 13 of his 29 RBI with two outs in an inning. More importantly, Miller has improved defensively. After committing 13 errors during his first year with the program in 2011, he has just nine errors this year while handling more defensive chances already. His fielding percentage is up to.962 from.939 last year. A lingering hand injury has flared up on Miller in late April, playing a role in the three throwing errors he committed the final week of the month. He had committed only two errors while handling 160 defensive chances over a stretch of 33 games from Feb. 25 through April 22. Due in part to some injuries and inexperience among the other middle infielders, Miller has also been an ironman at shortstop this year. He did not play for the first time this season in the finale of the Michigan State series April 29, ending his streak of 64 consecutive games started at shortstop dating back to last season. Furthermore, the senior had played 355 of the possible 361 innings at shortstop prior to the April 29 game. MILLER WINS BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR BIG SERIES AT UCLA Punctuated by driving in a run in each of his two plate appearances in the 10-run ninth inning rally, David Miller came to play in the series at UCLA, earning Big Ten Player of the Week honors after reaching base safely nine times in 13 chances. Miller was the team s the third consecutive Player of the Week. Cameron Perkins was honored on April 23 and Eric Charles on April 30. This marks the second time in team history Purdue has had three straight Big Ten Players of the Week (also in 2008). Miller hit safely and scored a run in all three games of the UCLA series, finishing the weekend 6-for- 10 and compiling a.692 on-base percentage. He broke up the perfect game bid by UCLA pitcher Adam Plutko with a one-out single in the sixth inning of game one of Saturday s doubleheader. The senior connected for a solo home run in the nightcap as part of a three-hit showing. O 2012 Purdue Baseball: Good Guys Wear Black P Page 8

9 CHARLES & PERKINS DELIVER CLUTCH HITS IN WALK-OFF WIN VERSUS MSU In a game that was scoreless until the top of the eighth inning, Purdue trailed 3-1 with outs in the ninth inning but managed to pull out a 4-3 walk-off win in 14 innings against Michigan State April 28 at Lambert Field. It was the Boilers second (of three) extra-innings walk-off wins. The 14-inning game was the longest since Purdue won a 16-inning affair with Ohio State in April 2004 at Lambert Field. Eric Charles delivered a game-tying, two-out, two-run single in the ninth inning. He singled to right field on a full count pitch with the bases loaded. The senior had also knocked in Purdue s first run of the game with a base hit in the eighth inning. Cameron Perkins played the hero in the 14th, singling home Tyler Spillner for the walk-off winner. It was Perkins second career walk-off hit. The junior was 0-for-6 on the day entering the at-bat. Nick Wittgren and Blake Mascarello teamed up for 6 2/3 innings of one-run relief. Mascarello earned his Big Ten-leading eighth win of the season, getting the first batter he faced to ground into an inning-ending double play in 11th. Wittgren gave up a three-run triple in the eighth inning but came back in the ninth and struck out the side in order. When he gave way to Mascarello in the 11th it marked the first time this season that Wittgren did not finish a game in which he pitched. SERRATO SLAMS SPARTANS IN SERIES OPENER Barrett Serrato connected for Purdue s second grand slam of the season and the first at Lambert Field since April 2010 in the April 27 series-opening win against Michigan State. The senior went deep with the sacks packed in the fourth inning, giving the Boilers the lead for good. It was his fourth home run of the season and sixth career, five of which have come in Big Ten play. Purdue is 3-1 when he has homered this year and 5-1 in his career. Serrato s slam represented only the second home run hit by a Boiler in 11 games at Lambert Field this year. Cameron Perkins also connected for a grand slam in the Feb. 19 win against Notre Dame at the Big Ten/Big East Challenge. Culminating with Serrato s grand slam, the Boilers hit six home runs in a stretch of five games from April That power surge came after recording only four long balls in their first 17 games after returning from the spring break trip (March 27-April 17). Perkins went deep twice in the April 20 series opener at Nebraska, Serrato and David Miller homered in the April 22 rubber game win in Lincoln and Kevin Plawecki connected for a two-run shot April 24 in a midweek win at Illinois State. It was Plawecki s first homer since March 10. NO STRIKEOUTS IN RUBBER GAME WIN AT NEBRASKA; RELIEF PITCHING SHINES The Boilermakers did not strikeout in their rubber game win at Nebraska April 22. Purdue scored in three of the first four innings, highlighted by a four-run fourth inning. Each of the first four batters of the inning recorded a hit, highlighted by a three-run homer from David Miller. Purdue did not strikeout last season in March of 2011 in a home win against Nebraska. Dating back to the beginning of the 2008 season, a no-strikeout game for the Boiler batters has happened only one other time: April 5, 2008, in a seven-inning win at Iowa. The relief work of Blake Mascarello and Nick Wittgren highlighted the series win on the mound. Mascrello retired all 13 batters he faced over 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief in the series opener, earning his Big Ten-leading seventh win of the year (all of which have come in relief). Wittgren closed out the series finale, working a season-high 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief. Wittgren entered the game with runners on second and third with one out in the sixth inning. He kept the Huskers from scoring, keeping Purdue in front 6-3 at the time. BOILERS REACH 30 WINS ON APRIL 20 & OTHER BIG TEN SERIES HIGHLIGHTS The Boilermakers won their 30th game of the season April 20 at Nebraska, marking the earliest date in program history they had reached the benchmark. The 2011 team won its 30th game on May 1. This marks the first time since that Purdue reached 30 wins by May 1 in consecutive seasons. The Boilermakers won their first true rubber game of the season April 22 at Nebraska, capturing their first Big Ten series with the Huskers in the program s first-ever trip to Haymarket Park. A day earlier, Purdue s 10-game win streak was snapped in Lincoln. The Boilers also won 10 straight games from Feb. 26 through March 16. It marked the first time in program history Purdue had a pair of 10-game win streaks in the same year. The Boilermakers swept Northwestern and Illinois in back-to-back weekends in April, recording consecutive Big Ten sweeps for the first time since 2001 (at Michigan State and at Northwestern). The Boilermakers also swept backto-back nonconference series in 2010 (at Ohio and vs. Chicago State). Purdue swept Illinois for the first time since Overall, Purdue has now posted five undefeated weekends this year season and three true series sweeps. Purdue has won the opening game of every weekend this year, posting an 12-1 record in games started by pitcher Joe Haase. Finishing weekend sweeps, especially in Big Ten play, has not come as easy. On four occasions (series vs. Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State and Michigan), the Boilers had a chance to sweep a series on Sunday but dropped the weekend finale. PERKINS WINS SECOND CAREER BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD Cameron Perkins led the way at the plate in Purdue s important series win at Nebraska (April 20-22), earning Big Ten Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career. Highlighted by a 5-for-13, 5-RBI showing at Haymarket Park, Perkins finished the week 7-for-17 with four extra-base hits, seven RBIs and four runs scored. He hit safely in all four games, recording multiple hits and multiple RBIs in three of the four games. Perkins recorded his second career multi-homer game in the series-opening win at Nebraska, going deep in back-to-back at-bats in a game televised live on the Big Ten Network. His two-run shot in the fifth inning was particularly significant. Not only did it give the Boilers the lead for good, but it also silenced the Nebraska faithful after the Huskers had tied the game at 5-5 with a three-run bottom of the fourth. Each of Perkins three career multi-homer games has come in Big Ten play. SCHREIBER BREAKS PROGRAM WINS RECORD AS PURDUE COMPLETES SWEEP Finishing off the series sweep of Illinois April 15 not only helped the Boilers in the Big Ten standings but also allowed head coach Doug Schreiber to break the program s all-time wins record at home. The 14th-year skipper posted his 408th career win in the nightcap of the doubleheader with Illinois, overtaking Dave Alexander ( ) for the team record. Schreiber was a four-year starter at second base for Alexander from Alexander was also the head coach of the Boilers for 14 years, coaching a school-record 792 games. Schreiber is expected to eclipse the games-coached record early next season. Schreiber also won his 400th career game at Lambert Field this season, March 31 vs. Penn State INNING-BY-INNING SCORING SUMMARY: ALL GAMES EX Total Purdue Opponents Difference E Purdue Baseball at the Big Ten Tournament

10 STARTING PITCHING LED THE WAY DURING APRIL 10-GAME WIN STREAK After giving up a season-high 16 runs in the April 1 blowout loss to Penn State, the Purdue pitching staff performed at a remarkably high level. Led by the starting staff of Joe Haase, Lance Breedlove, Connor Podkul and Robert Ramer, the Boilers surrendered no more than five runs in a game during the 10-game win streak (April 4-20). Purdue outscored the opposition during the win streak. Purdue posted two shutout wins (the series openers of the Northwestern and Illinois series) during the win streak. On three other occasions (April 4, 15 and 17), the Boilers took a shutout into the ninth inning. Behind stellar performances from Haase and Breedlove, Purdue kept Northwestern off the scoreboard for the first 15 innings of that series and shutout Illinois for the first 17 innings the following weekend. The Boilermakers trailed only twice during the 10-game win streak: after the first inning of the series finale at Northwestern and after the fourth inning of the midweek game at Ball State. CONSECUTIVE SCORELESS INNINGS STREAKS FOR HAASE & BREEDLOVE Joe Haase and Lance Breedlove have put together notable consecutive scoreless innings streaks this year. Haase pitched 18 consecutive scoreless frames from April 6-20, a span of three straight starts. He finished off a complete-game shutout April 6 at Northwestern and following that up with 7 2/3 shutout innings in his April 13 win against Illinois. Nebraska scored in the third inning April 20 to snap the streak. Haase won five straight starts from March 16-April 15, putting together a quality start each time out. Purdue is 11-0 in the games he has started this year. Breedlove pitched 33 consecutive scoreless innings at Lambert Field dating back to his final inning of relief in the May 1, 2011, win against Indiana. The senior pitched a complete-game shutout against Penn State March 31 in his first start of the season at Lambert Field. He followed that up with 7 2/3 shutout innings in game two of the Illinois series (April 15). The streak was snapped in the eighth inning of the April 28 win against Michigan State. The Spartans scored three times in the frame on a bases-loaded triple. However, Nick Wittgren gave up the big hit after taking over for Breedlove with one out in eighth inning. Therefore, the opposition has still not scored while Breedlove has been physically on the mound at Lambert Field this year. Breedlove surrendered only two runs over 32 2/3 innings in his first four Big Ten starts. Along with shutting out Penn State and Illinois, he kept Ohio State off the scoreboard until the ninth inning and prevented Northwestern from scoring until the seventh. PODKUL JOINS WEEKEND ROTATION DURING SWEEP AT NORTHWESTERN Starting pitchers Joe Haase, Lance Breedlove and Connor Podkul teamed up for 22 innings of four-run ball, leading the Boilers to a series sweep at Northwestern (April 6-8). It was Purdue s first Big Ten sweep on the road since The Boilermakers only trailed only once all series, going down 1-0 after the first inning of game three. Podkul earned his first collegiate win with six innings of three-run ball in the series finale at Northwestern (April 8). The freshman struck out a season-high six in his first Big Ten start. He became the first Purdue freshman to start a Big Ten game since Kyle Cook in Other highlights for Podkul as a starter during his freshman campaign have included: working 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball March 13 at Missouri State, pitching six innings of no-hit ball (surrendering a run) in the March 27 home opener against Louisville, his 6 1/3 innings of two-hit ball in an April 15 no-decision against Illinois and limiting Nebraska to three runs over 5 1/3 innings to earn the victory in the rubber game win at Nebraska. BOILERS EXPLODE FOR 12-RUN INNING IN MIDWEEK WIN AT BALL STATE Purdue scored a season-high 12 times on 11 hits, sending 17 men to the plate, in the sixth inning of the April 11 win at Ball State. It was the Boilers biggest inning since also scoring 12 times in a March 2008 home win against Western Illinois. Angelo Cianfrocco and David Miller both connected for two-run homers in their second at-bats of the sixth inning. Every batter in Purdue s original starting lineup had a hit in the sixth inning. Cianfrocco and Stephen Talbott both recorded a pair of hits, Cianfrocco racking up six total bases, and scored twice in the frame. BIG SCORING EDGE LATE IN GAMES Purdue has feasted on relief pitching for much of the season, best demonstrated by a plus-112 scoring edge from the sixth inning through the end of the game. The Boilermakers have scored 66 runs in the sixth inning, their highest total in any inning. In fact, the run totals in the sixth, seventh (47) and eighth (40) innings rank as three of the team s top four most productive innings. Coincidentally, Purdue has only scored 26 runs in the fifth inning. The Boilermakers have scored four or more runs in an inning 22 times this year. Fifteen of those 22 occurrences have come in the sixth inning or later. Purdue has registered extended sixth-inning rallies featuring run totals of 12 (April 11 at Ball State), nine (Feb. 19 vs. UND), eight (March 10 at Murray), seven (Feb. 26 vs. WCU and March 3 vs. USM) and five (March 15 at WSU). On multiple occasions early this season, Purdue was able to score runs against an opposing reliever that entered the day having not surrendered an earned on the year. Wichita s Foster Vielock (3 H, 3 ER), Murray s Will Handlin (7 H, 5 ER), Southern Miss Cameron Giannini (3 H, 4 ER), and Auburn s Dillon Ortman (H, ER) and Cory Luckie (2 H, 2 ER) all failed to hold down the Purdue offense in close games that the Boilers went on to win. In the walk-off wins against Michigan State and Louisville, Purdue successfully got to the opposition s closer. MSU s Tony Wieber had only allowed two runs in 19 innings this season when the Boilers scored twice in the ninth on a two-run single by Eric Charles to tie the game. Against Louisville, Purdue scored the game-winning run against the Cardinals closer, Derek Self. He had surrendered only two earned runs in his first 10 appearances of the season entering the day. ANTONELLI DELIVERS BIG HIT AS PURDUE REACHES 20 WINS BEFORE APRIL 1 Chris Antonelli delivered the go-ahead single in the seventh inning of a scoreless game and help lead Purdue to a 2-0 win against Penn State March 31. The win was the Boilers 20 the of the season. The team reached the benchmark before April 1 for the first time in program history. Purdue closed the month of March with a 15-3 record. Head coach Doug Schreiber also his 400th career game March 31. He has now recorded his 100th, 250th, 300th and 400th career wins against Penn State. He received a Gatorade shower from his players during the postgame huddle in left field. Antonelli made his first start of the season in the landmark win and after a lengthy at-bat, hit a ground ball through the right side to score Kevin Plawecki from third base with two outs in the seventh inning. Plawecki singled to open the frame, breaking up the no-hit bid by Penn State left-hander Joe Kurrasch. BREEDLOVE THE FIRST BOILER TO WIN PITCHER OF THE WEEK THREE TIMES IN SAME SEASON Lance Breedlove s complete-game shutout of Penn State in his season debut at Lambert Field (March 31) earned the senior his third Big Ten Pitcher of the Week award of 2012, making him the first Boiler in program history to be honored this times in one season. Breedlove retired the first 19 batters of the game in order. Both pitchers carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, as PSU s Joe Kurrasch matched Breedlove for much of the day. But Purdue scored twice with two outs in the seventh and went on to win the game, 2-0. Breedlove won Big Ten Pitcher of the Week in back-to-back wins, working complete-game victories against Ohio State and Penn State. He was the first Boiler to pitch consecutive complete games since Matt Bischoff in April 2009 (also against PSU and OSU). Matt Morgan ( ) and Bischoff ( ) were both three-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Week winners during their careers, but they accumulated those awards over two seasons. Breedlove joins former outfielder Daniel Underwood ( ) as the only Purdue players to be recognized by the conference office three times in the same season since the weekly awards program began in Underwood was a three-time Big Ten Player of the Week in At the time, Underwood was the first Big Ten baseball player to accomplish the feat. Former Ohio State pitcher Alex Wimmers was the last pitcher to be the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week at least three times in the same season. He was honored four times in O 2012 Purdue Baseball: Good Guys Wear Black P Page 10
