Purdue (34-7, 14-4 Big Ten) and UCLA (29-12, 12-9 Pac-12) will play three times in just over 24 hours at Jackie Robinson Stadium, beginning with a 4 p.m. ET doubleheader Saturday. Game two of the twinbill is set for a hard start time of 9 p.m. ET unless the first game runs long. The series concludes Sunday at 4 p.m. ET. UCLA (No. 4) and Purdue (No. 5) are both ranked among the top five in the RPI entering the week. The winner of the series would enhance its opportunity to become one of the eight national seeds in next month s NCAA Tournament and potentially host a Super Regional, June The Boilermakers have not played in California since 2002, losing both games of a weather-shortened series against Cal State Northridge. The only previous Purdue-UCLA meeting, a 10-6 win for the Bruins, took place on the Boilers 2001 spring break trip to California. Purdue s Southern California natives, Lance Breedlove (Long Beach) and Angelo Cianfrocco (San Diego), both get an opportunity to play in front of friends and family this weekend. Back in the Midwest, the other 10 Big Ten teams square off this weekend. The three series of note feature Minnesota (9-6 Big Ten) hosting Penn State (8-7), Michigan State (8-7) traveling to Illinois (8-7) and Indiana (9-6) hosting Nebraska (8-7). The Boilermakers may be able to clinch their first Big Ten title since 1909 at home next weekend during a series vs. Michigan, but not before then. For Purdue, the series at UCLA came to be in part because of Cleveland State discontinuing its baseball program after the 2011 season. With only six baseball-playing schools, the Horizon League opted to play a double round-robin conference schedule. The Boilermakers were originally scheduled to play Valparaiso at home this weekend. But the Crusaders no longer had an opening after their league schedule changed. Thankfully, the Pac-12 also has 11 baseball-playing members (Wisconsin and Colorado do not sponsor the sport). Head coach Doug Schreiber said he felt his experienced team was up to the challenge of flying to the West Coast the weekend after finals and booked the series. Schreiber and assistant coach Jeff Duncan coached and played, respectively, at Jackie Robinson Stadium during their years at Arizona State. Seniors Eric Charles and Tyler Spillner will both play in their 200th career games this weekend. Charles remains one run shy of matching the program s all-time record. Last weekend in the series win against Michigan State, Barrett Serrato recorded his 100th RBI (on a grand slam Friday) and Kevin Plawecki registered his 200th career hit (a first-inning single Sunday). The Boilermakers are 18-4 in true road games and 25-5 in games played away from Lambert Field this year. UCLA is 17-9 at Jackie Robinson Stadium in 2012, playing 26 of its 41 games at home. The Bruins did fly east the weekend of March 9-11, sweeping a three-game series at Georgia. Maryland is the only common opponent for Purdue and UCLA. The Bruins lost two-of-three to Maryland during the season-opening weekend. The Boilers lost their Feb. 25 game with the Terps in Greenville, N.C. Two of the top three picks in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft were UCLA starting pitchers. The Bruins lost to South Carolina in the Championship Series of the 2010 College World Series and won the 2011 Pac-12 title. They re enjoying another quality season, winning 12 consecutive games from Feb. 25 through March 16. That streak included a series win against Big 12-leading Baylor, the series sweep at Georgia and a nonconference victory against rival USC in a game played at Dodger Stadium. However, the Bruins have lost three of their last four weekend series in Pac-12 play. The strength of UCLA s team this year appears to be the bullpen. Led by closer Scott Griggs (10 saves, 1.11 ERA), the Bruins feature four relievers with sub-2.00 ERAs. David Berg (1.67 ERA in 28 appearances) and Ryan Deeter (0.83 ERA in 26 appearances) have successfully shortened games as setup men for Griggs. The UCLA lineup is a balanced unit, featuring six players with 20-plus RBI, led by first baseman Trevor Brown (35). Purdue also has six regulars with at least 20 RBI. Catcher Tyler Heineman is batting.381, handling the bat well (19 walks vs. 10 Ks and a team-high 11 sac bunts) as the regular No. 2 hitter. Jeff Gelalich leads the team in batting average (.383), home runs (6), walks (24) and stolen bases (14). The Boilermakers have 13 victories against teams ranked among the Top 60 in the RPI and entered the week with the second best winning percentage (.829) in the country. 3 Head Coach Doug Schreiber 14TH YEAR CAREER RECORD (.538) Dave Alexander s Purdue Wins Record: 407 BIG TEN RECORD (.528) Biographical Information Full Name...Douglas Lee Schreiber Date of Birth...Aug. 25, 1963 Place of Birth...La Porte, Ind. Education... Purdue University, B.A.,... Communications College Career... Purdue, Wife...Sarah Coaching Experience Purdue Present, Head Coach Arizona St , Assistant Coach Notre Dame , Assistant Coach Butler , Assistant Coach Ball State , Graduate Assistant Since Doug Schreiber was named Purdue s head baseball coach on May 29, 1998, the Boilermakers have become a major force in the Big Ten Conference and have made big strides on a national level. Currently in his 14th year as the head coach at Purdue, he now owns program records for overall wins and conference victories. In 2007, Schreiber became the third head coach in Purdue baseball history to surpass the 500-games mark as the Boilermakers head man. Dave Alexander, whom Schreiber played for from 1983 to 1986, owns the record for most games coached at Purdue with 792 over 14 seasons. Schreiber broke Alexander s all-time wins record (407) April 15, 2012, and is on pace to break the games coached benchmark in Purdue s 37 overall wins in 2011 tied the program s single season record and were the most in the Big Ten. Despite being picked eighth in the preseason coaches poll, the Boilers finished third in the league with a conference record, just one game shy of first, and reached the Big Ten Tournament for the fourth consecutive year and seventh time in the last eight seasons. The four straight tourney appearances represent the longest active streak in the league as well as a program high. The program s 58 Big Ten wins over the last four years are also the most in the league. Purdue led the Big Ten in numerous statistical categories in 2011, highlighted by runs scored, doubles, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, sacrifice flies, saves and strikeouts. The Boilermakers drew the most walks at the plate and issued the fewest number of free passes on the mound. Six Boilers were recognized as all-conference performers, matching the second-highest total in program history. Kevin Plawecki and Barrett Serrato were named First Team, Tyler Spillner and Nick Wittgren Second Team and Cameron Perkins and Stephen Talbott Third Team. With Serrato, Spillner and Talbott all honored as outfielders, it marked the first time 1991 that three Purdue outfielders were named all-conference in the same season. The 2010 season saw the Boilermakers post 33 victories, the program s most since Purdue navigated a hotlycontested Big Ten race that saw all six league tournament-qualifying teams finish within three games of first place. The Boilermakers reached the Big Ten Tourney for the eighth time under Schreiber, including six of the last seven seasons. Purdue eliminated Northwestern and Indiana from the 2010 tournament before bowing out. The Boilers have won at least one game at the Big Ten Tournament in seven of their eight appearances under Schreiber. The 2010 Boilermakers posted new school records for hits (636) and runs per game (7.2) at the plate and led the Big Ten in strikeouts (435) and batting average against (.276) on the mound. Purdue went 15-6 at home and 9-2 in midweek action, compiling a mark after opening the season 1-6. Individually, Matt Bischoff was honored as a First Team All-Big Ten starting pitcher. He led the Big Ten with 10 wins and 95 strikeouts and in the process became the first player in program history to be a four-time All-Big Ten honoree. He established new single-season and career strikeout marks in his final season as a Boilermaker. Bischoff and fellow pitcher Kevin Cahill were both selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Schreiber has coached 54 All-Big Ten Conference selections, including 18 who were named to the conference s First Team, and has had players selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on 23 occasions. One of Schreiber s Boilermakers has led the Big Ten in hitting in four out of the last seven years. Prior to becoming the head coach at Purdue, Schreiber spent four seasons ( ) as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under Pat Murphy at Arizona State University. Schreiber helped guide Arizona State to the College World Series and the national championship game in A year earlier, the Sun Devils finished as regional runners-up to Miami, and were two outs away from going to the College World Series. All four of Schreiber s recruiting classes at ASU were nationally ranked, including the 1995 class which was ranked No. 1 in the country and the 1996 class, which was tabbed the third best in the nation. Before going to ASU, Schreiber served as an assistant coach for Murphy at the University of Notre Dame in That season, the Fighting Irish finished and ended the season just two wins shy of Omaha, finishing as regional runners-up to Auburn. Schreiber began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Pat Quinn at Ball State University for two seasons ( ) and spent one year (1993) as an assistant at Butler University. A native of LaPorte, Ind., Schreiber was a four-year starter ( ) at second base for the Boilermakers. During his career, Purdue posted a mark and established a school-record 37 victories his senior season when he was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection. Schreiber still ranks among Purdue s career leaders in a variety of categories, including top-six ranking in four categories. Schreiber ranks first all-time in walks (132), fourth in runs scored (159), tied for third in games played (220) and tied for sixth in triples (9). He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in communications and has completed some course work towards a master s in education. Highlighted by a 10-game win streak from April 4 through 20, Purdue posted a 14-3 record in April, but lost its first and final games of the month. Michigan State starting pitcher David Garner denied the Boilers a series sweep Sunday, shutting out Purdue for the first time this season. It was the Boilers first shutout loss at home since April 2009 vs. Ohio State. Purdue has a 3 1/2-game lead in the Big Ten standings. As the Boilers head west to LA, the six teams still within striking distance all play each other this weekend back in the Midwest. Penn State (8-7) plays at Minnesota (9-6), Indiana (9-6) hosts Nebraska (8-7) and Michigan State (8-7) plays at Illinois (8-7). The Boilermakers close out Big Ten play with series against Michigan and Iowa. Both opponents would not qualify for the Big Ten Tournament if it started this weekend. Purdue closes out its most-challenging stretch of the season this weekend. The Boilermakers posted a 7-2 record in the three consecutive weekends against Illinois, Nebraska and Michigan State. Entering the Illinois series the weekend of April 13-15, Illinois, Nebraska, Michigan State and UCLA were a combined Purdue has not played in the state of California since February 2002, a series against Cal State Northridge. The Boilermakers also traveled out west for the 2001 spring break trip, playing five different teams, including UCLA. BOILERS BATS THIRD IN THE NATION IN TEAM BATTING AVERAGE ENTERING THE WEEK The Boilermakers entered the week ranked sixth in the nation with a.318 team batting average. Purdue was also 21st in hits and 22nd in scoring (6.9 runs per game). Coincidentally, the Boilers are batting.344 in road and neutral-site action (30 games) versus only.236 in their 11 home games. But the Purdue pitchers have limited the opposition to a.225 batting average against at Lambert Field. The pitching and defense have been performing well overall. The Boilermakers were fifth nationally in double plays turned per game and ranked seventh in total twin killings. Purdue has now turned 49 double plays. The pitching staff, meanwhile, is averaging only 2.12 walks per nine innings, a total which ranks as the third best in the country and a big reason why the Boilers are 12th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.98). The 2.97 team ERA is good for 22nd nationally. CHARLES APPROACHING ALL-TIME RUNS RECORD; NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK AGAIN Senior Eric Charles is the program s active career leader in games played, at-bats, runs, hits, doubles and stolen bases. He scored four times in the April 17 win at Illinois-Chicago, surpassing head coach Doug Schreiber (159) on the program s all-time leaderboard. Schreiber graduated in 1986 as the school record holder. With 167 runs, Charles is closing in on the all-time record held by Jose Rossy (168, ). Kevin Plawecki (36 HBP) could also eclipse the Purdue all-time record (39) for hit by pitch soon. Coincidentally, even as a cleanup-hitting catcher, Plawecki enters the weekend leading the team and Big Ten in runs scored (41) this year. Charles was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the second time this season April 30 after he hit safely in all four games and finished the week 9-for-17. He had multiple hits in all three games of the Michigan State series, finishing the weekend 8-for-13. He has reached base safely in 19 consecutive games and 32 straight Big Ten games dating back to last season. The Boilermakers have claimed four Player and five Pitcher of the Week honors this season, the nine total weekly honorees representing a new program record. The Big Ten s weekly awards program began in Purdue had eight players recognized last season. Charles joins Daryl Hallada (1999 and 2000), Daniel Underwood (three times in 2003), Eric Wolfe (twice in 2006) and teammate Cameron Perkins (2011 and 2012) as Boilers to win multiple Player of the Week awards during their careers. With Perkins earning Player of the Week recognition April 23, Purdue has had consecutive honorees among field players for the first time since the opening weeks of 2011 (Barrett Serrato and Angelo Cianfrocco) and sixth time in program history. Mascarello earned his Big Ten-leading eighth win of the season, getting the first batter he faced to ground into an inningending double play in 11th. Wittgren gave up a three-run triple in the eighth inning but came back in the ninth and struck out the side in order. When he gave way to Mascarello in the 11th it marked the first time this season that Wittgren did not finish a game in which he pitched. O 2012 Purdue Baseball: Good Guys Wear Black P Page 4

Serrato s slam represented only the second home run hit by a Boiler in 11 games at Lambert Field this year. Cameron Perkins also connected for a grand slam in the Feb. 19 win against Notre Dame at the Big Ten/Big East Challenge. Culminating with Serrato s grand slam, the Boilers hit six home runs in a stretch of five games from April That power surge came after recording only four long balls in their first 17 games after returning from the spring break trip (March 27-April 17). Perkins went deep twice in the April 20 series opener at Nebraska, Serrato and David Miller homered in the April 22 rubber game win in Lincoln and Kevin Plawecki connected for a two-run shot April 24 in a midweek win at Illinois State. It was Plawecki s first homer since March 10. MILLER NAMED TO BROOKS WALLACE AWARD WATCH LIST David Miller has been one of the team s most consistent performers and the senior was recognized for his all-around good season by being selected to the College Baseball Hall of Fame s Brooks Wallace Award Watch List. The Brooks Wallace Award recognizes the nation s top shortstop. Fifty shortstops were selected to the initial watch list, including three from the Big Ten Conference. Illinois Thomas Lindauer and Nebraska s Chad Christensen joined Miller on the list. Miller s production at the bottom of the lineup has given Purdue one of the deepest one-through-nine combinations in the country. He enters the weekend series at UCLA with a.295 batting average, 11 extra-base hits and 23 RBI. He has drawn 14 walks versus only 10 strikeouts. The senior has recorded 14 of his 23 RBI with two outs in an inning. More importantly, Miller has improved defensively. After committing 13 errors during his first year with the program in 2011, he has just eight errors this year while handling almost the same number of defensive chances already. His fielding percentage is up to.959 from.939 last year. A lingering hand injury has flared up on Miller over the last 10 days, playing a role in the three throwing errors he committed last week. He had committed only two errors while handling 160 defensive chances over a stretch of 33 games from Feb. 25 through April 22. Due in part to some injuries and inexperience among the other middle infielders, Miller has also been an ironman at shortstop this year. He did not play for the first time this season in the finale of the Michigan State series April 29, ending his streak of 64 consecutive games started at shortstop dating back to last season. Furthermore, the senior had played 355 of the possible 361 innings at shortstop prior to the April 29 game. Miller joins Lance Breedlove (College Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher of the Year), Kevin Plawecki (Johnny Bench Award) and Nick Wittgren (Stopper of the Year) as Boilers on watch lists for prominent national awards SITUATIONAL STATISTICS: TEAM LEADERS With Runners On With Runners in Scoring Position With Two Outs Two-Out RBIs 1. The Pitcher of the Year Award is presented by the College Baseball Hall of Fame and honors the nation s top performer on the mound. Minnesota s TJ Oakes and Breedlove represented the Big Ten Conference on the initial list. Breedlove s six victories have been highlighted by shutout performances against Cincinnati, Penn State and Illinois. He struck out a career-high 11 over seven innings of shutout ball in his season-opening start against Cincinnati. He fanned 10 in a complete-game performance at Ohio State March 24. The senior right-hander took a perfect game into the seventh inning of his two-hit complete game shutout of Penn State March 31, retiring 27 of the 29 batters he faced that day. In his next home start he worked 7 2/3 shutout innings against Illinois. Breedlove s streak of 33 consecutive scoreless innings at Purdue s Lambert Field, which dated back to May 2011, was snapped in the eighth inning of the April 28 win against Michigan State. The Spartans scored three times in the frame on a bases-loaded triple. However, Nick Wittgren gave up the big hit after taking over for Breedlove with one out in eighth inning. Therefore, the opposition has still not scored while Breedlove has been physically on the mound at Lambert Field this year. It marked the first time in program history Purdue had a pair of 10-game win streaks in the same year. The Boilermakers swept Northwestern and Illinois in back-to-back weekends in April, recording consecutive Big Ten sweeps for the first time since 2001 (at Michigan State and at Northwestern). The Boilermakers also swept back-to-back nonconference series in 2010 (at Ohio and vs. Chicago State). Purdue swept Illinois for the first time since Overall, Purdue has now posted five undefeated weekends this year season and three true series sweeps. The sweep at Northwestern (April 6-8) was the Boilers first Big Ten sweep on the road since 2001, a season in which they won 13 straight games from March 24 through April 14. Purdue has won the opening game of every weekend this year, posting an 11-0 record in game started by pitcher Joe Haase. Finishing weekend sweeps, especially in Big Ten play, has not come as easy. On three occasions (series vs. Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan State), the Boilers NO STRIKEOUTS IN RUBBER GAME WIN AT NEBRASKA; RELIEF PITCHING SHINES ON THE MOUND The Boilermakers did not strikeout in their rubber game win at Nebraska April 22. Purdue scored in three of the first four innings, highlighted by a four-run fourth inning. Each of the first four batters of the inning recorded a hit, highlighted by a three-run homer from David Miller. Purdue did not strikeout last season in March of 2011 in a home win against Nebraska. Dating back to the beginning of the 2008 season, a no-strikeout game for the Boiler batters has happened only one other time: April 5, 2008, in a seven-inning win at Iowa. The relief work of Blake Mascarello and Nick Wittgren highlighted the series win on the mound. Mascrello retired all 13 batters he faced over 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief in the series opener, earning his Big Ten-leading seventh win of the year (all of which have come in relief). Wittgren closed out the series finale, working a season-high 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief. Wittgren entered the game with runners on second and third with one out in the sixth inning. He kept the Huskers from scoring, keeping Purdue in front 6-3 at the time. PERKINS WINS SECOND CAREER BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD Cameron Perkins led the way at the plate in Purdue s important series win at Nebraska (April 20-22), earning Big Ten Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career. Highlighted by a 5-for-13, 5-RBI showing at Haymarket Park, Perkins finished the week 7-for-17 with four extra-base hits, seven RBIs and four runs scored. He hit safely in all four games, recording multiple hits and multiple RBIs in three of the four games. Perkins recorded his second career multi-homer game in the series-opening win at Nebraska, going deep in back-to-back at-bats in a game televised live on the Big Ten Network. His two-run shot in the fifth inning was particularly significant. Not only did it give the Boilers the lead for good, but it also silenced the Nebraska faithful after the Huskers had tied the game at 5-5 with a three-run bottom of the fourth. Each of Perkins three career multi-homer games has come in Big Ten play. SCHREIBER BREAKS PROGRAM WINS RECORD AS PURDUE COMPLETES SWEEP Finishing off the series sweep of Illinois April 15 not only helped the Boilers in the Big Ten standings but also allowed head coach Doug Schreiber to break the program s all-time wins record at home. The 14th-year skipper posted his 408th career win in the nightcap of the doubleheader with Illinois, overtaking Dave Alexander ( ) for the team record. Schreiber was a four-year starter at second base for Alexander from Alexander was also the head coach of the Boilers for 14 years, coaching a school-record 792 games. Schreiber is expected to eclipse the games-coached record early next season. Schreiber also won his 400th career game at Lambert Field this season, March 31 vs. Penn State. STARTING PITCHING LED THE WAY DURING APRIL 10-GAME WIN STREAK After giving up a season-high 16 runs in the April 1 blowout loss to Penn State, the Purdue pitching staff performed at a remarkably high level. Led by the starting staff of Joe Haase, Lance Breedlove, Connor Podkul and Robert Ramer, the Boilers surrendered no more than five runs in a game during the 10-game win streak (April 4-20). Purdue outscored the opposition during the win streak. Purdue posted two shutout wins (the series openers of the Northwestern and Illinois series) during the win streak. On three other occasions (April 4, 15 and 17), the Boilers took a shutout into the ninth inning. Behind stellar performances from Haase and Breedlove, Purdue kept Northwestern off the scoreboard for the first 15 innings of that series and shutout Illinois for the first 17 innings the following weekend. The Boilermakers trailed only twice during the 10-game win streak: after the first inning of the series finale at Northwestern and after the fourth inning of the midweek game at Ball State. 7 CONSECUTIVE SCORELESS INNINGS STREAKS FOR HAASE & BREEDLOVE Joe Haase and Lance Breedlove have put together notable consecutive scoreless innings streaks this year. Haase pitched 18 consecutive scoreless frames from April 6-20, a span of three straight starts. He finished off a complete-game shutout April 6 at Northwestern and following that up with 7 2/3 shutout innings in his April 13 win against Illinois. Nebraska scored in the third inning April 20 to snap the streak. Haase won five straight starts from March 16-April 15, putting together a quality start each time out. Purdue is 11-0 in the games he has started this year. Breedlove pitched 33 consecutive scoreless innings at Lambert Field dating back to his final inning of relief in the May 1, 2011, win against Indiana. The senior pitched a complete-game shutout against Penn State March 31 in his first start of the season at Lambert Field. He followed that up with 7 2/3 shutout innings in game two of the Illinois series (April 15). The streak was snapped in the eighth inning of the April 28 win against Michigan State. Breedlove surrendered only two runs over 32 2/3 innings in his first four Big Ten starts. Along with shutting out Penn State and Illinois, he kept Ohio State off the scoreboard until the ninth inning and prevented Northwestern from scoring until the seventh. PODKUL JOINS WEEKEND ROTATION DURING SWEEP AT NORTHWESTERN Starting pitchers Joe Haase, Lance Breedlove and Connor Podkul teamed up for 22 innings of four-run ball, leading the Boilers to a series sweep at Northwestern (April 6-8). It was Purdue s first Big Ten sweep on the road since The Boilermakers only trailed only once all series, going down 1-0 after the first inning of game three. Podkul earned his first collegiate win with six innings of three-run ball in the series finale at Northwestern (April 8). The freshman struck out a season-high six in his first Big Ten start. He became the first Purdue freshman to start a Big Ten game since Kyle Cook in Other highlights for Podkul as a starter during his freshman campaign have included: working 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball March 13 at Missouri State, pitching six innings of no-hit ball (surrendering a run) in the March 27 home opener against Louisville, his 6 1/3 innings of two-hit ball in an April 15 no-decision against Illinois and limiting Nebraska to three runs over 5 1/3 innings to earn the victory in the rubber game win at Nebraska. Podkul as a Starter: 2-1, 6 GS, 32 IP, 21 H, 5 BB, 16 K, 3.38 ERA,.184 B/Avg BOILERS EXPLODE FOR 12-RUN INNING IN MIDWEEK WIN AT BALL STATE Purdue scored a season-high 12 times on 11 hits, sending 17 men to the plate, in the sixth inning of the April 11 win at Ball State. It was the Boilers biggest inning since also scoring 12 times in a March 2008 home win against Western Illinois. Angelo Cianfrocco and David Miller both connected for two-run homers in their second at-bats of the sixth inning. Every batter in Purdue s original starting lineup had a hit in the sixth inning. Cianfrocco and Stephen Talbott both recorded a pair of hits, Cianfrocco racking up six total bases, and scored twice in the frame. The Boilermakers have won 14th straight true midweek games dating back to March BIG SCORING EDGE LATE IN GAMES Purdue has feasted on relief pitching for much of the season, best demonstrated by a scoring edge from the sixth inning through the end of the game. The Boilermakers have scored 58 runs in the sixth inning, their highest total in any inning. In fact, the run totals in the sixth, seventh (38) and eighth (34) innings rank as three of the team s top four most productive innings. Coincidentally, Purdue has only scored 16 runs in the fifth inning. The Boilermakers have scored four more runs in an inning 20 times this year. Thirteen of those 20 occurrences have come in the sixth inning or later. Purdue has registered extended sixth-inning rallies featuring run totals of 12 (April 11 at Ball State), nine (Feb. 19 vs. UND), eight (March 10 at Murray), seven (Feb. 26 vs. WCU and March 3 vs. USM) and five (March 15 at WSU). On multiple occasions early this season, Purdue was able to score runs against an opposing reliever that entered the day having not surrendered an earned on the year. Wichita s Foster Vielock (3 H, 3 ER), Murray s Will Handlin (7 H, 5 ER), Southern Miss Cameron Giannini (3 H, 4 ER), and Auburn s Dillon Ortman (H, ER) and Cory Luckie (2 H, 2 ER) all failed to hold down the Purdue offense in close games that the Boilers went on to win. In the walk-off wins against Michigan State and Louisville, Purdue successfully got to the opposition s closer. MSU s Tony Wieber had only allowed two runs in 19 innings this season when the Boilers scored twice in the ninth on a two-run single by Eric Charles to tie the game. Against Louisville, Purdue scored the game-winning run against the Cardinals closer, Derek Self. He had surrendered only two earned runs in his first 10 appearances of the season entering the day. HAASE S GARNERS PITCHER OF THE WEEK HONORS FOR TWO-HIT SHUTOUT A two-hit shutout in the April 6 series-opening win at Northwestern earned Joe Haase Big Ten co-pitcher of the Week honors, making him the fifth Boiler honored by the conference office this season. He was also named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame s weekly National All-Star Lineup. The senior did not give up hit after the fourth inning, needing only 99 pitches to finish his second career completegame shutout. He retired 27 of the 30 batters he faced, including eight in a row twice. The right-hander recorded six innings. Haase was honored by the conference office for the second time in his career. Last year, he was recognized after shutting out Minnesota at Target Field during the conference-opening weekend. 8 ANTONELLI DELIVERS BIG HIT AS PURDUE REACHES 20 WINS BEFORE APRIL 1 Chris Antonelli delivered the go-ahead single in the seventh inning of a scoreless game and help lead Purdue to a 2-0 win against Penn State March 31. The win was the Boilers 20 the of the season. The team reached the benchmark before April 1 for the first time in program history. Purdue closed the month of March with a 15-3 record. Head coach Doug Schreiber also his 400th career game March 31. He has now recorded his 100th, 250th, 300th and 400th career wins against Penn State. He received a Gatorade shower from his players during the postgame huddle in left field. Antonelli made his first start of the season in the landmark win and after a lengthy at-bat, hit a ground ball through the right side to score Kevin Plawecki from third base with two outs in the seventh inning. Plawecki singled to open the frame, breaking up the no-hit bid by Penn State left-hander Joe Kurrasch. BREEDLOVE THE FIRST BOILER TO WIN PITCHER OF THE WEEK THREE TIMES IN SAME SEASON Lance Breedlove s complete-game shutout of Penn State in his season debut at Lambert Field (March 31) earned the senior his third Big Ten Pitcher of the Week award of 2012, making him the first Boiler in program history to be honored this times in one season. Breedlove retired the first 19 batters of the game in order. Both pitchers carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, as PSU s Joe Kurrasch matched Breedlove for much of the day. But Purdue scored twice with two outs in the seventh and went on to win the game, 2-0. Breedlove won Big Ten Pitcher of the Week in back-to-back wins, working complete-game victories against Ohio State and Penn State. He was the first Boiler to pitch consecutive complete games since Matt Bischoff in April 2009 (also against PSU and OSU). Matt Morgan ( ) and Bischoff ( ) were both three-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Week winners during their careers, but they accumulated those awards over two seasons. Breedlove joins former outfielder Daniel Underwood ( ) as the only Purdue players to be recognized by the conference office three times in the same season since the weekly awards program began in Underwood was a three-time Big Ten Player of the Week in At the time, Underwood was the first Big Ten baseball player to accomplish the feat. Former Ohio State pitcher Alex Wimmers was the last pitcher to be the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week at least three times in the same season. He was honored four times in Breedlove needed only 101 pitches to finish his two-hit shutout of Penn State. It was his fourth start of the season without a walk. He worked seven innings and retired 27 of the 29 batters he faced, pitching the first complete-game shutout by a Boiler since Joe Haase blanked Minnesota on April 2, 2011, at Target Field. BOILERS NOW OFFICIALLY RANKED IN ALL FOUR NATIONAL POLLS After debuting at No. 24 in the March 19 USA Today/ESPN Top 25 coaches poll, Purdue is now nationally ranked in all four major national polls at the same time for the first time in program history. The team has also garnered its highest ranking ever. Among the Collegiate Baseball Top 30 for the ninth week in a row, the Boilers are No. 18 this week. Purdue remained ranked in the Baseball America Top 25 and National Collegiate Baseball Writers of Association Top 30 polls for the eighth week in a row. The Boilermakers jumped up to No. 11 in the NCBWA & USA Today rankings and moved up to No. 13 in Baseball America s poll. The program has earned its first in-season national ranking since February 2001 (Baseball America). The Boilermakers were also nationally ranked in the 2002 NCBWA preseason poll. The Boilermakers have been ranked among the Top 30 of Perfect Game USA s national Top 50 all season, moving up to No. 7 this week. TWO-OUT RBI TITANS Barrett Serrato (34 RBIs, 19 with two outs), Eric Charles (24, 13), Sean McHugh (17, 12), David Miller (23, 14) and Andrew Dixon (10, 7) have supplied the majority of their run production in clutch situations this season. All five players enter the weekend having recorded more than half their RBIs with two outs in an inning. Serrato has led the way, collecting 19 of his 34 RBIs with two outs. On two occasions this year, the opposition (East Carolina and Wichita State) intentionally walked Kevin Plawecki with two outs and a runner in scoring position to setup a lefty-lefty matchup with Serrato. He delivered a run-scoring single both times. McHugh and Serrato have connected for three-run homers with two outs in an inning this season. McHugh hit his three-run on the first pitch thrown by new WSU reliever Tobin Mateychick in the sixth inning of game two of the series. Serrato s three-run homer capped the seven-run rally in the comeback win against Southern Miss. ANOTHER LONG ON-BASE STREAK ENDS FOR PERKINS In Big Ten play, Cameron Perkins had reached base safely in 46 consecutive contests dating back to 2010 until Penn State finally get him off the base pathes in the March 31 pitcher s duel. Including the Big Ten Tournament, he had managed to find his way on base in 53 straight games against conference opponents. He compiled an on-base percentage of.419 during his Big Ten streak thanks to reaching base safely 101 times (76 hits, nine walks, 16 hit by pitch). After getting robbed of a potential base hit up the middle on a nice play by the Maryland pitcher on Feb. 25 in what proved to be Perkins final at-bat of the game, the junior s remarkable streak of reaching base safely in 67 consecutive games was snapped. The streak dated back to Perkins reached base safely at least one in every game he played as a sophomore. Perkins reached base safely 133 times during his streak. He collected 98 hits, 12 walks and was hit by a pitch 23 times, good for an on-base percentage of.421. TALBOTT PLAYS THE HERO IN HOME-OPENING WALK-OFF WIN Stephen Talbott s walk-off single in the 10th inning punctuated the Boilers home-opening with an exclamation point. Purdue defeated No. 15 Louisville, 2-1, March 27 in a game that featured two of the nation s top offenses but turned into a pitcher s duel. Talbott singled home Angelo Cianfrocco, who doubled to open the 10th inning, to join Sean McHugh and Cameron Perkins as active Boilers with a walk-off hit on their collegiate résumés. McHugh played the hero in Purdue s last extra-inning game, a 12-inning victory against Indiana at Lambert Field on April 29, Starting pitcher Connor Podkul did not give up a hit over six innings of one-run ball in his Lambert Field debut. Despite a low pitch count of 59 for Podkul, lefty Blake Mascarello took over on the mound to begin the seventh. The Cardinals had three left-handed hitters due up. Mascarello worked four innings of scoreless relief to earn his team-leading fifth win. RAMER FANS CAREER-HIGH NINE TO LEAD PURDUE TO MIDWEEK WIN Robert Ramer struck out a career-high nine over eight innings of one-run ball, keeping his team in the game on another slow day for the offense in Purdue s 6-1 win against IPFW March 28. Ramer worked four innings, retiring the final nine batters he faced in order. He recorded five strikeouts his first time through the IPFW lineup and two more in the eighth inning. It was the longest outing of his career. Ramer now sports a career record of Among the active Boilers with multiple decisions, he remains the program s only undefeated pitcher. Purdue is now 14-1 in games he has started during his career. The Boilermakers trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the seventh but scored three times in the seventh and eighth innings to surge in front.
