Currently in his 17th season as the leader of the program, Schreiber is the program s all-time leader in overall wins and Big Ten wins. He eclipsed Dave Alexander s record for games coached (792 over 14 seasons) during the second weekend of the 2013 season. Schreiber played for Alexander at Purdue from Purdue unveiled its new Alexander Field stadium and facilities during the school year, but the first two seasons at the new ballpark turned out to be rebuilding years for the Boilermakers after losing 15 seniors and three junior MLB draftees from the 2012 Big Ten championship team. As of July 2014, 10 members of the 2012 championship team had signed with MLB organizations at some point in their post-college careers. In the five seasons between 2008 and 2012, Purdue went overall (.610) and in Big Ten play (.595). Both records represented the best marks in the league. The Boilermakers were the only conference team to qualify for the Big Ten Tournament each of those five seasons, the longest such streak in program history. Purdue has won at least one game at the Big Ten Tournament in eight of its nine appearances under Schreiber. After playing six NCAA Regional qualifiers throughout the season, including four opponents that were among the 16 Regional hosts, Purdue s strength of schedule in 2014 ranked among the Top 25 nationally for much of the year, including as high as No. 2 in the country for much of non-conference play. The Boilermakers eight extrainning affairs were the most in Schreiber s tenure as well as the most in the Big Ten. Purdue also played in 17 one-run games, but managed just a 5-12 record in those contests. During its historic 2012 season, Purdue won a program-record 45 games, captured a pair of Big Ten titles, earned the right to host an NCAA Regional and closed out Lambert Field in thrilling fashion. Schreiber was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading the Boilers to the most wins by a Big Ten team since He won his 400th and program-record 408th career games at Lambert in the spring of His 408th victory as the leader of the program, April 15 in the finale of a series sweep of Illinois, made him Purdue s all-time wins leader. The Boilermakers began the 2012 season 14-1, won 10 consecutive games twice, posted their 20th win before April 1 for the first time, reached the 30-win mark at the earliest date (April 20) in program history and won their first Big Ten title since Headlined by Kevin Plawecki s selection 35th overall by the New York Mets, Purdue had a program-record seven players picked in the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Juniors Plawecki, Cameron Perkins and Nick Wittgren were each selected in the first 10 rounds to give the Boilers three players drafted in the first 300 picks for the first time. Six times since 2006 multiple Boilers have been selected in the same draft. Highlighted by Big Ten Player and Pitcher of the Year honors for Plawecki and Joe Haase, Purdue had a program-high eight all-conference honorees in Schreiber has coached 62 All-Big Ten Conference selections, including 22 who were named to the conference s First Team, and has had players selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft on 32 occasions. Prior to becoming the head coach at Purdue, Schreiber spent four seasons ( ) as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under Pat Murphy at Arizona State University. Schreiber helped guide Arizona State to the College World Series and the national championship game in A year earlier, the Sun Devils finished as regional runners-up to Miami, and were two outs away from going to the College World Series. All four of Schreiber s recruiting classes at ASU were nationally ranked, including the 1995 class which was ranked No. 1 in the country and the 1996 class, which was tabbed the third best in the nation. Before going to ASU, Schreiber served as an assistant coach for Murphy at the University of Notre Dame in That season, the Fighting Irish finished and ended the season just two wins shy of Omaha. Schreiber began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Pat Quinn at Ball State University for two seasons ( ) and spent one year (1993) as an assistant at Butler University. A native of LaPorte, Ind., Schreiber was a four-year starter ( ) at second base for the Boilermakers. During his career, Purdue posted a mark and established a school-record 37 victories his senior season when he was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection. Schreiber still ranks among Purdue s career leaders in a variety of categories, including first all-time in walks (132), tied for first in games played (226), sixth in runs scored (159) and tied for eight in triples (9). He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in communications and has completed some course work towards a master s in education. The Boilermakers are opening their new season not far from where the 2014 campaign began, albeit on the other side of the Smokies. The 2014 season was slated to get underway on Valentine s Day, but Purdue and Tennessee didn t end up playing in Knoxville until Feb. 16. A Friday (Feb. 13) or Saturday (Feb. 14) opener this year would mark the earliest start date in Purdue history, eclipsing 2013 (Feb. 15). The Boilermakers (13-37 in 2014) last played Western Carolina (37-18 in 2014) as recently as February 2012 in their last trip to the state of North Carolina. Purdue was a 14-7 winner against the Catamounts on getaway day at East Carolina s Keith LeClair Classic in Greenville, N.C. Among current Boilers, Joe Eichmann and Brandon Krieg both saw action in that game. Eichmann closed out the win with a scoreless inning of relief in his college debut. The Catamounts top two position players entering 2015 also saw action in that game as freshmen. Certainly the most notable game in the short history of the Purdue-WCU all-time series was in the 1987 NCAA Tournament. The Catamounts held on for an 8-7 victory in Starkville, Miss to eliminate the Boilers from their first-ever NCAA Regional appearance. The elevation of Cullowhee, N.C., is 2,100 feet. And while Purdue has regularly played at Penn State on a biennial basis since 1995, State College s elevation is only 1,200 feet. This weekend s series is believed to feature the highest elevation for any games in program history. WCU s Childress Field at Hennon Stadium features the Purple Monster in left field, a wall that is 20 feet tall for one segment and 14 feet tall for another. The 20-foot high batter s eye in center field is also in play. Purdue s first 28-man travel roster of the season features 12 newcomers, with three of them transfers Michael Vilardo and Brett Carlson as well as freshman Harry Shipley expected to be in the opening day lineup. After a respectable sophomore campaign as Purdue s Saturday starter for much of the season, Gavin Downs moves to Friday. He had strong outings against the likes of LSU, Tennessee, Rice, Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa and Butler last year. Brett Haan and Matt Frawley complete the rotation for the opening weekend. Both righthanders have much command than a year ago according to the coaching staff. Western Carolina is expected to start three lefties on the mound. Michigan started three lefties against Purdue each of the last two seasons. Iowa did likewise during the final weekend of the 2013 season. Eight of the Boilers 13 victories came against southpaw starters last year despite facing lefties in seven fewer games. The Catamounts had four players drafted from their 2014 SoCon championship team that went and 20-6 in league play. However, despite posting a combined record in SoCon play the last two years, WCU was just 1-4 in the conference tournament and was left out of the NCAA Tournament field both seasons. Sophomore Bryan Sammons moves to the top of the WCU rotation after finishing 2014 as the Sunday starter and earning Freshman All-American honors. He struck out seven in three different outings en route to finishing the season with 57 strikeouts in 60 innings. Projected Sunday starter Dillon Bray has pitched in only four games for WCU the last two years due to injuries. The Catamounts most heralded pitcher is closer Tyler Powell, who had 13 saves and a 1.44 ERA in He was named to the NCBWA s preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List this week. Jacob Hoyle was tabbed the SoCon s Preseason Player of the Year after batting.332 with 14 home runs a year ago. He had three hits and three RBI against Purdue in the 2012 game at ECU s tournament. Second baseman Bradley Strong is also back after matching Hoyle s team-leading RBI total (53) to go along with 20 doubles and 20 stolen bases. Strong also started as a freshman in the 2012 game against the Boilers. Purdue dropped its season opener last season for the first time since The Boilermakers are 7-9 in season openers under head coach Doug Schreiber, but have not won a traditional weekend series to begin a new campaign since taking two-of-three at Texas-San Antonio in Purdue Stadium Tour: Road/Neutral Site Games at Ballparks of Note Date(s) Opponent/Event Stadium Location Notable Pro Home Team/Historical Significance Feb TAMU-CC Tournament Whataburger Field Corpus Christi, Texas Corpus Christi Hooks (Astros Double-A affiliate) Feb. 26-March 1 Arizona St. Tournament Phoenix Municipal Phoenix, Ariz. For the second weekend of the 2012 Big Ten championship season, the Boilermakers played in the four-team Keith LeClair Classic hosted by East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. Purdue also played Maryland and Western Carolina that weekend and both teams are on the schedule again this season. Each of the first three Purdue-WCU games have been neutral-site affairs, including an NCAA Regional meeting in Starkville, Miss., in Head coach Doug Schreiber begins his 17th season as the leader of the Boilermakers and 21st year overall associated with the program. The four-year starting second baseman won his 450th career game in 2014 after breaking the Purdue all-time wins record in He ll coach his 900th career game in early March this season. The Boilermakers are 7-9 in season openers under Schreiber. Last year they dropped their season opener for the first time since Last season also marked the first time Purdue opened with a traditional weekend series since Winning twoof-three at Texas-San Antonio in 2002 marked the last time the Boilers opened a new campaign with a traditional series victory. The Feb. 13 season opener will be the earliest in program history. The 2013 season began on Feb. 15, which at the time was the Boilers earliest opener ever, eclipsing 2001 (Feb. 16). Purdue was scheduled to open on Valentine s Day last year at Tennessee, but didn t end up playing its first game until Feb. 16 due to weather delays that also impacted the team s travel to Knoxville. The 1997 team opened on Feb. 17. FINDING A WAY TO WIN MORE CLOSE GAMES Purdue was 9-16 in games decided by two runs or fewer last season. Ten of their 17 one-run games came in Big Ten play. Additionally, eight of those 25 close games were extra-innings affairs, Purdue going 3-5 in games longer than nine innings. The Boilermakers eight extra-inning affairs were the most in the Big Ten during the regular season and the 17 one-run games ranked second in the league behind only Illinois (18). A better showing in close games coupled with a less-daunting pre-big Ten schedule would seem to go hand in hand in helping Purdue have a better season this year. With six starting position players and almost the entire bullpen back from last year, numerous Boilers have experienced the ups and downs of numerous nail biters as well as playing six NCAA Regional qualifiers in Conversely, staying out of big innings early in games would also help Purdue s cause. The Boilermakers were outscored 53-7 in the first inning during the 2014 campaign, leading to many early deficits the offense was not equipped to overcome after scoring four or more runs in an inning only twice in 50 games. CARRYING OVER DEFENSIVE EXCELLENCE INTO 2015 Purdue led the Big Ten in double plays turned (54) and outfield assists (17) through the end of the 2014 regular season. Those areas of defensive excellence coupled with a.971 fielding percentage helped keep the Boilers in the numerous close games a year ago. Defense is expected to remain a team strength. Freshman Harry Shipley is projected to start the new season at shortstop primarily because of his defensive prowess. Two-year starting infielder Brandon Krieg moves to third base this year after strong defensive seasons at second base (2013) and shortstop (2014). Kyle Johnson is a two-year starter in center field entering his junior year. Sophomore Jeff Evak is fast enough to start in center field but is expected to remain a corner outfielder this season. Jack Picchiotti is projected to take over the full-time duties at catcher this season after seeing action at six different positions during his underclassman seasons. Purdue needs to replace the graduated (and drafted) Sean McHugh, who was the team s overall and defensive MVP in 2014 at catcher. He threw out 26 of 50 base stealers. But Picchiotti managed to throw out three of five base stealers in his seven starts at catcher last season. KRIEG & PICCHIOTTI ENTER 2015 RIDING STREAKS Brandon Krieg and Jack Picchiotti both enter 2015 riding notable 19-game reached base safely streaks. Krieg reached safely in the final 19 games of 2014, while Picchiotti did so in the final 19 games in which he started. Picchiotti s streak dates back to April 5, 2014, and the nightcap of a doubleheader vs. Penn State, which marked the start of an eight-game hitting streak. He hit safely in 16 of those 19 games during the reached-safely streak. Krieg hit safely in 13 of the 16 games while posting the second-longest streak on the team in 2014, behind only Kyle Wood s 24-game run. Wood finished 2014 on a six-game hitting streak. Krieg s Reached Safely Streak (April 15-End of 2014):.325, 4 XBH, 8 RBI, 15 R, 11 BB, 3 HBP Picchiotti s Reach Safely Streak (April 5-End of 2014):.313, 4 2B, 6 RBI, 5 R, 7 BB, 3 HBP NINE TRANSFERS LOOKING TO MAKE INSTANT IMPACT Purdue has nine new transfers on its roster this season, including five that began their college careers at other four-year universities. Shane Bryant (Indiana Wesleyan), Brett Carlson (Austin Peay) and Brian Ghiselli (Miami Univ.) have all been part of the program since the fall of 2013, sitting out last season as redshirts. Michael Vilardo joined the program at the start of the 2015 spring semester as a graduate transfer from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a Second Team All-Ivy League second baseman for the Quakers in Robb Woodcock started his college career at the University of California in the fall of 2011 before pitching at Palomar CC in Other transfers include Daniel Sander and Alex Lyons, who helped Vincennes University reach the 2014 NJCAA Division II World Series. Justin Gubser was an all-state performer on the JUCO level in his native California before joining the team this fall. O Purdue Baseball: 2012 Big Ten Champions & NCAA Regional Host P Page 6

Tourney JOHNSON, KRIEG & WOOD AMONG BIG TEN PLAYERS TO WATCH Kyle Johnson, Brandon Krieg and Kyle Wood are all two-year starters that have been constants in the top half of the lineup the last two seasons. The trio was highlighted as the Boilers contingent among the Big Ten Players to Watch for the 2015 season. Together, Johnson, Krieg and Wood have made a combined 267 starts over the last two years. Johnson (center field) and Krieg (shortstop) were the only two Boilers to make all of their starts at the same position in Wood finished 2014 as the team leader in batting average (.302), on-base percentage (.390) and OPS (.804). He had a 24-game reached base safely streak during the middle of the season and delivered a walk-off single in the 13-inning victory against Ohio State April 25. He also impressed defensively at first base last year after making most of his starts at designated hitter as a freshman. The lefthander is also expected to be used on the mound in relief again this season. Krieg led the 2014 Boilermakers with 12 steals and 28 runs scored. Defensively, he contributed to 32 of the Big Ten-leading 54 double plays Purdue turned. After a 3-for-38 start to the season at the plate, he raised his batting average to.273 by April 20, and.272 entering the final day of the season while ending 2014 riding a 19-game reached safely streak. Krieg delivered the game-winning hit in Purdue s first walk-off victory at Alexander Field (April 15 vs. Butler), capping a day in which he reached base safely six times. Johnson seems poised to enjoy a breakout season as the athletic 6-foot-5 outfielder enters his junior campaign having started 88 of the 101 games the last two years. After being among the Boilers top players over the second half of the 2013 season, the San Diego native s offensive numbers took a dip during as a sophomore. But his range in center field remains a strength to go along with the seven outfield assists he recorded over his underclassman seasons. SUMMER LEAGUE SUCCESS Kyle Johnson (Peninsula Pilots, Costal Plain League) and Kyle Wood (Lakeshore Chinooks, Northwoods League) helped their summer league teams win league championships in the summer of They were the starting designated hitters in the two games their teams won in the finals round of the playoffs to clinch the league titles. Johnson was in the starting lineup for all six games Peninsula won in the playoffs and did not play in any of the three losses. Wood s team was named the nation s top summer league team by Perfect Game USA. Jeff Evak and Matt Frawley were named all-stars in the Midwest Collegiate League. Brian Ghiselli pitched in the Great Lakes League All-Star Game. BEST IN THE BIG TEN FROM ; THIRD BEST IN LEAGUE PLAY FROM After a program-best five consecutive Big Ten Tournament berths from , Purdue has failed to qualify for the Big Ten Tournament the last two years. With the tournament field remaining at eight teams this year, the Boilers are looking to avoid their first three-year streak of not qualifying since (when it was only a four-team field). Purdue was a Big Ten-best overall (.610) and in league play (.595) from But the program has managed just a overall mark (.297) the last two years. From , the Boilermakers were (.539) in Big Ten play. Only Minnesota ( ,.611) and Ohio State ( ,.581) were better. RUBBER GAME STRUGGLES Purdue did not win a weekend series in 2014 due in part to an 0-6 record in rubber games. Four times the Boilers won the opener of the series, but ended up losing two-of-three. Purdue has lost nine straight weekend rubber games dating back to May The Boilermakers have not won a weekend series after losing the opener since May 2009 at Michigan State. In the years since, on 11 occasions Purdue has won the opener of a traditional threegame set but failed to win the series. Nine of those 11 series have been in Big Ten play.
