Purdue Baseball at Chapel Hill Regional AROUND THE HORN The Boilermakers have qualified for the NCAA Tournament for just the third time in program history, joining the 1987 and 2012 team as NCAA Regional qualifiers. Purdue is 21-3 since April 20. NCAA Regoinal qualifiers Ohio State and Minnesota are the only teams to defeat the Boilermakers during that stretch. The Boilermakers were going into their April series at Maryland, which was the second of their five sweeps in Big Ten play. Highlighted by a pair of 13-game win streaks (overall and home), Purdue won 18 of its final 20 regular-season games to finish second in the Big Ten standings. The Boilermakers also won their first three games at the Big Ten Tournament to be a finalist at the event for the fourth time. They were picked 11th in at least one Big Ten preseason poll. Despite exceeding preseason expectations, Purdue did not have a player selected first or second team All-Big Ten. Four were named to the third team. However, the Boilermakers had a programrecord six Big Ten All-Tournament Team selections.

He helped lead teams to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances during a successful 20-year run as an assistant coach. He also won an NCAA championship as the starting third baseman and a captain on Pepperdine s 1992 College World Series team. Wasikowski (pronounced WOZ-uh-COW-ski) played for and worked under three-time national Coach of the Year Andy Lopez for a combined 18 years. He was part of Lopez s coaching staffs at both Florida ( ) and Arizona ( ) before joining George Horton s staff at Oregon in the summer of 2011, spending five seasons with Horton in Eugene. Wasikowski was an assistant coach on Arizona s 2004 College World Series team, the same year that Horton led Cal State Fullerton to the national title. Wasikowski led the Boilermakers to a 19-win improvement in his first season. It ranked as the greatest turnaround in program history and tops nationally entering the week of the conference tournaments around the country. Purdue returned to the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2012 after winning 10 more games in league play. Wasikowski s team joined the 2007 Boilermakers as the only Big Ten teams since 1988 to post a 10-win improvement in conference play. Purdue posted a pair of seven-game win streaks in 2017 and recorded 10-plus victories in both March and April. The Boilermakers won seven weekend series after having only six such successful weekends from 2013 to Purdue was 8-3 in one-run games after having a 2-13 record in similar contests the year before. The Boilermakers 18 true road wins were tied with Minnesota for the most in the Big Ten. Wasikowski is the 20th head coach in Purdue s 129-year history, but only the Boilermakers fourth full-time skipper since Wasikowski has coached 120 players that have been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft, a list highlighted by 29 big leaguers. During his 10 seasons at Arizona, Wasikowski coached 59 Major League Baseball draft picks and 22 future big leaguers. As the recruiting coordinator, he assembled the Wildcats 2012 national championship team, leaving for Oregon before the start of the school year. Oregon was one of only three teams nationally to win 40-plus games every year from 2012 to During his five seasons in Eugene, the Ducks had 23 players drafted. Wasikowski was a two-time All-West Coast Conference honoree at Pepperdine after spending his first two collegiate seasons at Hawaii and Rancho Santiago Junior College. He was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1993 MLB Draft, but opted to remain at Pepperdine to finish his bachelor s degree in business administration while serving as a student assistant under Lopez during the 1994 season. He also has a master s of business administration from Southeast Missouri. Wasikowski was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame along with all of his teammates from the 1992 national championship team. He led the Waves in doubles as a junior and hits as a senior, guiding Pepperdine back to the NCAA Tournament in Wasikowski and his wife, Lori Jo, are the parents of two daughters, Joelle and Kelsey. WHAT THEY RE SAYING ABOUT MARK WASIKOWSKI... George Horton Head Coach at the University of Oregon I believe Mark Wasikowski is one of the brightest, up-and-coming baseball coaches in the country. There is no doubt that Mark will make a huge impact as the new leader at Purdue. We will miss Coach Waz and wish him great fortune. Andy Lopez Former Head Coach at Pepperdine, Florida & Arizona; Two-Time NCAA Champion Mark Wasikowski is more than ready to be a successful head coach. He will not only establish a winning culture, but he and his family will be a great addition to Purdue University and the community. Mark Hogan Head Coach at Southeast Missouri State From 1996 to 2012 Mark is arguably the best recruiter in the country. He s going to be a tireless and energetic guy. His understanding of the inner workings of the game is off the charts, and they were that way almost 20 years ago when he was with me. What a great, great hire for Purdue. We are thrilled for Mark and his family. Nick Hundley San Francisco Giants Catcher, 2005 All-American at Arizona I never in my wildest dreams thought I d go to Arizona. I thought I was going to Stanford or Tulane when Waz started recruiting me. I felt like he cared more about me than anyone I talked to in the recruiting process. He out recruited every other school. My dad was a college football coach for 41 years, and he told me during the process that Arizona will get good players if I went there because Waz could recruit and get players in there. Then when I got to school, he was more concerned with me as a person than he was with my performance. He stayed on me about school and put together a three-year graduation plan so I could be done with school if I signed after my junior year. As a player, I left Arizona much better than when I arrived. He was very good at the mental part of the game and pushing us to get to places we didn t know we could go. I still talk to Waz about once every three months. He is very loyal, and I would trust his character to run my program. Robert Refsnyder Tampa Bay Rays Utility Man, 2012 College World Series MVP at Arizona I can t say enough about Waz. He was a diligent recruiter and true competitor. I have the upmost respect for him. He s a family man and a family coach. If you give your all as a player, he will give you everything he s got. Love that guy! Trevor Crowe 2005 First Round MLB Draft Pick, 2005 All-American at Arizona My experience with Coach Waz at the University of Arizona was an important part of my development as a baseball player, but was more important to my development as a human being. I hope my child has the chance to develop as a baseball player and a man under the leadership of a man like Coach Waz. O 2018 Purdue Baseball // #MOinWL: Momentum in West Lafayette P Page 4

Now in year 2 under head coach Mark Wasikowski, Purdue earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in program history. The Boilermakers had the best record ( , B1G) in the Big Ten from 2008 to 2012, but fell on hard times following their program-record 45- win Big Ten championship season. Coach Waz has the program trending upwards again. The current senior class has more than doubled its win total (66-46,.589) from its underclassman seasons (30-78,.278). But going a combined 15-0 against Penn State, Maryland, Rutgers, Northwestern and Michigan was a big reason why the Boilermakers finished second in the Big Ten standings. The Penn State sweep was part of the program s first 4-0 start to conference play since The Maryland, Rutgers and Northwestern sweeps were all part of the 13-game win streak, which included a nine-game win streak in Big Ten play. The conference win streak was one game short of the program record from Purdue had never swept Northwestern or Michigan at home in a series of at least three games. Overall, the Boilermakers had not swept NU since 2001 and Michigan since The sweeps of Maryland and Rutgers doubled as the first series victories those opponents since the newcomers joined the league in Purdue finished the regular season riding a 13-game home win streak, which matched the 1987 NCAA Regional team for the longest single-season home streak in program history. Stetson (14) and North Carolina (13) were the only other schools nationally that also won at least 13 home games to close the regular season. The Boilermakers finished second or better in the Big Ten for the fifth time dating back to They were the No. 2 seed and runner-up at the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since With 17 Big Ten wins, Purdue matched its total from the 2012 Big Ten championship season. However, with one rain out in the mix this year, the 2018 Boilermakers actually had a better winning percentage in conference play (.739 vs..708). TWO BIG WEEKS FOR LEARNARD Twice this season, Ross Learnard has closed out four Purdue wins in the same week. He earned a win and three saves the week of April 16 to 22 at Indiana State and Maryland, earning Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors. The final week of the regular season he earned four saves vs. Oral Roberts and Michigan. Learnard closed out 13 of the Boilermakers 17 Big Ten wins, earning 10 saves to lead the league in conference play. Entering the season, Purdue s career record for saves in Big Ten play was 10. A national query in late April revealed Learnard was one of three closers in the country to have earned saves three times in the same weekend. He has now accomplished the feat twice. Learnard eclipsed Andy Helmer s single-season record (13) that had stood since He s now second all-time in program history with 19. Learnard headlines a strong bullpen that is a big reason why Purdue is 26-1 when leading after six innings and 30-0 when leading after seven. Meanwhile, the Boilermakers have rallied to win six times this season when tied or trailing after eight innings. ALL THREE OUTFIELDERS BAT OVER.300 IN BIG TEN PLAY Consistent production from the outfielders was a big reason why the Boilermakers surged into second place in the Big Ten standings. Ben Nisle (.344, 9 XBH, 18 RBI), Skyler Hunter (.308, 7 XBH, 13 RBI) and Alec Olund (.307, 8 2B, 12 RBI) were Purdue s top three hitters in conference play. They combined for 33 of the 114 RBI (29 percent) on Big Ten weekends. They ve all posted double-figure hit streaks this season and entered the Big Ten Tournament having reached base safely in at least 11 consecutive games. Hunter: 13-game hit streak, 12-game hit streak in Big Ten play, active 24-game reached safely streak Olund: 10-game hit streak, active 15-game reached safely streak Nisle: 10-game hit streak, 16-game reached safely streak University president Mitch Daniels made a special appearance at Alexander Field on May 15 for an on-field commencement ceremony honoring Purdue s seven graduating seniors.
