A series vs. Western Michigan in Georgia was added instead. Purdue swept the three-game set, starting 3-0 for the first time since 2012 and sweeping a three-game season-opening series vs a single opponent for the first time since Gareth Stroh is slated to take the ball against SLU for the second year in a row. He worked six innings of two-run ball against SLU at Alexander Field last year, an outing that was his second of five straight in which he worked at least six innings. The Boilermakers won the game in walk-off fashion on Harry Shipley s two-out single in the ninth.

He helped lead teams to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances during a successful 20-year run as an assistant coach. He also won an NCAA championship as the starting third baseman and a captain on Pepperdine s 1992 College World Series team. Wasikowski (pronounced WOZ-uh-COW-ski) played for and worked under three-time national Coach of the Year Andy Lopez for a combined 18 years. He was part of Lopez s coaching staffs at both Florida ( ) and Arizona ( ) before joining George Horton s staff at Oregon in the summer of 2011, spending five seasons with Horton in Eugene. Wasikowski was an assistant coach on Arizona s 2004 College World Series team, the same year that Horton led Cal State Fullerton to the national title. Wasikowski led the Boilermakers to a 19-win improvement in his first season. It ranked as the greatest turnaround in program history and tops nationally entering the week of the conference tournaments around the country. Purdue returned to the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2012 after winning 10 more games in league play. Wasikowski s team joined the 2007 Boilermakers as the only Big Ten teams since 1988 to post a 10-win improvement in conference play. Purdue posted a pair of seven-game win streaks in 2017 and recorded 10-plus victories in both March and April. The Boilermakers won seven weekend series after having only six such successful weekends from 2013 to Purdue was 8-3 in one-run games after having a 2-13 record in similar contests the year before. The Boilermakers 18 true road wins were tied with Minnesota for the most in the Big Ten. Wasikowski is the 20th head coach in Purdue s 129-year history, but only the Boilermakers fourth full-time skipper since Wasikowski has coached 120 players that have been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft, a list highlighted by 29 big leaguers. During his 10 seasons at Arizona, Wasikowski coached 59 Major League Baseball draft picks and 22 future big leaguers. As the recruiting coordinator, he assembled the Wildcats 2012 national championship team, leaving for Oregon before the start of the school year. Oregon was one of only three teams nationally to win 40-plus games every year from 2012 to During his five seasons in Eugene, the Ducks had 23 players drafted. Wasikowski was a two-time All-West Coast Conference honoree at Pepperdine after spending his first two collegiate seasons at Hawaii and Rancho Santiago Junior College. He was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1993 MLB Draft, but opted to remain at Pepperdine to finish his bachelor s degree in business administration while serving as a student assistant under Lopez during the 1994 season. He also has a master s of business administration from Southeast Missouri. Wasikowski was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame along with all of his teammates from the 1992 national championship team. He led the Waves in doubles as a junior and hits as a senior, guiding Pepperdine back to the NCAA Tournament in Wasikowski and his wife, Lori Jo, are the parents of two daughters, Joelle and Kelsey. WHAT THEY RE SAYING ABOUT MARK WASIKOWSKI... George Horton Head Coach at the University of Oregon I believe Mark Wasikowski is one of the brightest, up-and-coming baseball coaches in the country. There is no doubt that Mark will make a huge impact as the new leader at Purdue. We will miss Coach Waz and wish him great fortune. Andy Lopez Former Head Coach at Pepperdine, Florida & Arizona; Two-Time NCAA Champion Mark Wasikowski is more than ready to be a successful head coach. He will not only establish a winning culture, but he and his family will be a great addition to Purdue University and the community. Mark Hogan Head Coach at Southeast Missouri State From 1996 to 2012 Mark is arguably the best recruiter in the country. He s going to be a tireless and energetic guy. His understanding of the inner workings of the game is off the charts, and they were that way almost 20 years ago when he was with me. What a great, great hire for Purdue. We are thrilled for Mark and his family. Nick Hundley San Francisco Giants Catcher, 2005 All-American at Arizona I never in my wildest dreams thought I d go to Arizona. I thought I was going to Stanford or Tulane when Waz started recruiting me. I felt like he cared more about me than anyone I talked to in the recruiting process. He out recruited every other school. My dad was a college football coach for 41 years, and he told me during the process that Arizona will get good players if I went there because Waz could recruit and get players in there. Then when I got to school, he was more concerned with me as a person than he was with my performance. He stayed on me about school and put together a three-year graduation plan so I could be done with school if I signed after my junior year. As a player, I left Arizona much better than when I arrived. He was very good at the mental part of the game and pushing us to get to places we didn t know we could go. I still talk to Waz about once every three months. He is very loyal, and I would trust his character to run my program. Robert Refsnyder Cleveland Indians Infielder, 2012 College World Series MVP at Arizona I can t say enough about Waz. He was a diligent recruiter and true competitor. I have the upmost respect for him. He s a family man and a family coach. If you give your all as a player, he will give you everything he s got. Love that guy! Trevor Crowe 2005 First Round MLB Draft Pick, 2005 All-American at Arizona My experience with Coach Waz at the University of Arizona was an important part of my development as a baseball player, but was more important to my development as a human being. I hope my child has the chance to develop as a baseball player and a man under the leadership of a man like Coach Waz. O 2018 Purdue Baseball // #MOinWL: Momentum in West Lafayette P Page 4

5 BOILERMAKERS AIMING TO BUILDING ON 19-WIN TURNAROUND A 19-win improvement and a return to the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since winning the event in 2012 highlighted Purdue s memorable turnaround campaign in Under first-year head coach Mark Wasikowski, the Boilermakers saw their record improve from in 2016 to this year. It was the best year-to-year improvement in program history. Entering the week of the conference tournaments around the country, the 19-win improvement was also tops nationally. Last year s team joined the 2007 Boilermakers as the only Big Ten teams since 1988 to win 10 more games in conference play than the year prior, improving from 2-22 to Purdue posted a pair of seven-game win streaks, and recorded 10-plus victories in both March and April. The Boilermakers won seven weekend series after having only six such successful weekends from 2013 to The Boilermakers recorded series sweeps against Santa Clara and Illinois and avoided being swept until a mid-may series against nationally ranked Michigan. Purdue was 8-3 in one-run games after having a 2-13 record in similar contests the year before. The team s 18 true road wins were tied with Minnesota for the most in the Big Ten. LEARNARD ON STOPPER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST Preseason All-American Ross Learnard was included on the preseason watch list for the NCBWA s Stopper of the Year Award. Learnard was one of 52 relievers nationally named to the preseason watch list. The lefthander was credited with six victories and four saves in 2017 while making a team-high 27 appearances on the mound. He was one of four Boilermakers to record at least one save as Purdue had 14 as a team. He was used as more of a super reliever than prototypical ninthinning closer, taking the ball in high-leverage situations regardless of the inning. He worked more than one frame in 18 of his appearances. A consecutive scoreless innings streak of 35 2/3 from March 11 through May 14 allowed Learnard to eclipse Purdue s minimum 30 innings ERA record that had stood since His.196 batting average and.086 WHIP were equally outstanding after he surrendered just 30 hits and 10 walks in 46 1/3 innings. EXPERIENCED ROSTER The Boilermakers welcomed back 16 letterwinners from the 2017 team. This year s opening day lineup featured featured returning starters everywhere but the corner outfield spots. Purdue enjoyed a great deal of diversity in its team leaders last season, especially among the lineup. Evan Warden (doubles, runs, on-base percentage), Jacson McGowan (extra-base hits, RBI, slugging percentage), Skyler Hunter (hits, batting average), Harry Shipley (stolen bases) and Bryce Bonner (walks) all led the team in at least one statistical categories. And that group of five doesn t even include the program s most versatile player Nick Dalesandro, who was second on the team in batting average, hits, RBI and stolen bases. On the mound, Purdue welcomed back its primary weekend rotation of Tanner Andrews, Gareth Stroh and Mike Kornacker, as well as its top three relief pitchers -- NCBWA All-American Ross Learnard plus Dalton Parker and Cameron Williams. But as Wasikowski continues to rebuild the roster, newcomers will certainly have an impact once again this season. The three Boilermakers recognized by the Big Ten coaches at the end of 2017, Stroh and all-freshman team selections Bonner and Hunter, were all new to the program a year ago INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS Jacson McGowan became the first Boilermaker since 2001 to lead the team in doubles (15), triples (3), home runs (8) and RBI (50). He improved his batting average from.218 on April 1 to.292 by season s end and was the first Boilermaker with 50 RBI since Nick Dalesandro ranked second on the team in batting average (.297), hits (63), RBI (42) and stolen bases (13). He has played in every game since the start of Skyler Hunter became the first freshman to lead the team in batting average (.323) since future big leaguer Kevin Plawecki in Harry Shipley s 24 stolen bases were the most by a Boilermaker since He needed less than three seasons to eclipse the program record for hit by pitch. Despite getting plunked 58 times in his career, the shortstop has missed just one game as a Boilermaker. Evan Warden led the team in OPS (.863) even tough he batted leadoff a team-high 32 times. He led the nation with 30 hit by pitch and led Purdue with 15 doubles and 50 runs scored. Gareth Stroh led the team in innings pitched (90 1/3), becoming just the ninth Boilermaker to reach the 90-innings mark. He struggled with his command early in the season but transformed himself into Purdue s most consistent starter in conference play, joining Tanner Andrews as the only pitchers to start a game in all 15 weekends. Evan Kennedy reached base safely in 11 of the 12 games he started at designated hitter in March, helping Purdue post an 8-4 record. He s projected to be back at DH this season after missing the final two months with a wrist injury. Senior Alec Olund has 10 career outfield assists, two career walk-off hits and is the only active Boilermaker with a multi-homer game.
