Currently in his 17th season as the leader of the program, Schreiber is the program s all-time leader in overall wins and Big Ten wins. He eclipsed Dave Alexander s record for games coached (792 over 14 seasons) during the second weekend of the 2013 season. Schreiber played for Alexander at Purdue from Purdue unveiled its new Alexander Field stadium and facilities during the school year, but the first two seasons at the new ballpark turned out to be rebuilding years for the Boilermakers after losing 15 seniors and three junior MLB draftees from the 2012 Big Ten championship team. As of July 2014, 10 members of the 2012 championship team had signed with MLB organizations at some point in their post-college careers. In the five seasons between 2008 and 2012, Purdue went overall (.610) and in Big Ten play (.595). Both records represented the best marks in the league. The Boilermakers were the only conference team to qualify for the Big Ten Tournament each of those five seasons, the longest such streak in program history. Purdue has won at least one game at the Big Ten Tournament in eight of its nine appearances under Schreiber. After playing six NCAA Regional qualifiers throughout the season, including four opponents that were among the 16 Regional hosts, Purdue s strength of schedule in 2014 ranked among the Top 25 nationally for much of the year, including as high as No. 2 in the country for much of non-conference play. The Boilermakers eight extrainning affairs were the most in Schreiber s tenure as well as the most in the Big Ten. Purdue also played in 17 one-run games, but managed just a 5-12 record in those contests. During its historic 2012 season, Purdue won a program-record 45 games, captured a pair of Big Ten titles, earned the right to host an NCAA Regional and closed out Lambert Field in thrilling fashion. Schreiber was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading the Boilers to the most wins by a Big Ten team since He won his 400th and program-record 408th career games at Lambert in the spring of His 408th victory as the leader of the program, April 15 in the finale of a series sweep of Illinois, made him Purdue s all-time wins leader. The Boilermakers began the 2012 season 14-1, won 10 consecutive games twice, posted their 20th win before April 1 for the first time, reached the 30-win mark at the earliest date (April 20) in program history and won their first Big Ten title since Headlined by Kevin Plawecki s selection 35th overall by the New York Mets, Purdue had a program-record seven players picked in the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Juniors Plawecki, Cameron Perkins and Nick Wittgren were each selected in the first 10 rounds to give the Boilers three players drafted in the first 300 picks for the first time. Six times since 2006 multiple Boilers have been selected in the same draft. Highlighted by Big Ten Player and Pitcher of the Year honors for Plawecki and Joe Haase, Purdue had a program-high eight all-conference honorees in Schreiber has coached 62 All-Big Ten Conference selections, including 22 who were named to the conference s First Team, and has had players selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft on 32 occasions. Prior to becoming the head coach at Purdue, Schreiber spent four seasons ( ) as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under Pat Murphy at Arizona State University. Schreiber helped guide Arizona State to the College World Series and the national championship game in A year earlier, the Sun Devils finished as regional runners-up to Miami, and were two outs away from going to the College World Series. All four of Schreiber s recruiting classes at ASU were nationally ranked, including the 1995 class which was ranked No. 1 in the country and the 1996 class, which was tabbed the third best in the nation. Before going to ASU, Schreiber served as an assistant coach for Murphy at the University of Notre Dame in That season, the Fighting Irish finished and ended the season just two wins shy of Omaha. Schreiber began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Pat Quinn at Ball State University for two seasons ( ) and spent one year (1993) as an assistant at Butler University. A native of LaPorte, Ind., Schreiber was a four-year starter ( ) at second base for the Boilermakers. During his career, Purdue posted a mark and established a school-record 37 victories his senior season when he was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection. Schreiber still ranks among Purdue s career leaders in a variety of categories, including first all-time in walks (132), tied for first in games played (226), sixth in runs scored (159) and tied for eight in triples (9). He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in communications and has completed some course work towards a master s in education. First pitch at Alexander Field is slated for 5:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday. The Boiler Block Party beer garden debuts Friday and the first 100 fans will also receive a Purdue thermal mug. Sunday, the first set of 2015 Purdue baseball cards will be given away to fans in attendance. Sunday s are also kids day at Alexander Field with inflatable play houses setup and other games along the third base concourse. The Boilermakers (8-11) have only played Rutgers twice before, both previous meetings being neutral-site games in Florida. Purdue was a winner in Boca Raton in 1999, head coach Doug Schreiber s first year, but lost the most recent matchup at the 2010 Big East/Big Ten Challenge in Clearwater. The Boilermakers will also host Maryland, the other Big Ten newcomer, for the final weekend of April. The Scarlet Knights (3-13) have spent their entire spring break trip in the state of Indiana, going 1-3 at Indiana State s tournament last weekend and dropping a midweek game at Ball State Wednesday. Rutgers 3-13 record may be a bit misleading. Seven of its losses have come on the road at Miami (four) and Florida Atlantic (three), which were both nationally ranked at the time. The Scarlet Knights series at Tennessee the weekend of Feb was canceled due to cold weather and they were unable to schedule a replacement. A year ago, Purdue was in a similar position as Rutgers. Entering their mid-march series at Southern Illinois, the Boilers were just 2-14 after playing the likes of Tennessee, Rice, LSU and San Diego State. Purdue went on to win the opening game of three of its next four series. The Boilermakers have won their conference-opening series just once (2012) in the last six years. But with Rutgers tied with Penn State at the bottom of the conference standings going into league play and the games being played in West Lafayette, this weekend would be an opportune time for Purdue to post its first Big Ten series victory at its third-year ballpark. While the 51 runs the Boilers have scored over the last six games certainly qualify as an offensive awaking, the strong showings by the Purdue starting pitchers over the last five games is likely more significant to continued success. Mike Kornacker, Brett Haan, Matt Frawley, Gavin Downs and Shane Bryant have all put together quality outings, teaming up for a combining 2.45 ERA while recording 21 strikeouts versus only five walks. Boilermaker pitchers issued only three walks in the Northern Illinois series. Defensively, Harry Shipley s consistency at shortstop has perhaps exceeded the coaching staff s expectations when he was made the starter to begin his freshman season. After recording 19 defensive assists in the NIU series, Shipley extended his streak of consecutive games without an error to 13. He has made just two errors this year and been part of all three game-ending double plays turned by the Boilers. And at the plate, he has certainly held his own while batting in the nine hole every game. Tom Marcinczyk has led the way offensively for Rutgers, leading the team in batting average (.333), extra-base hits (9) and RBI (14). Lefthanders Mark McCoy and Howie Bray have been constants in the weekend rotation all season. Bray has given up fewer hits (21 in 21 2/3 innings) and has a better strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.18). He ll start Saturday. The Boilermakers are scheduled to play their first two Big Ten series at home as well as their final conference weekend. Meanwhile, by the end of the 2015, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan State and Minnesota will all still not have played at the Boilers third-year ballpark yet. Last weekend s series against Northern Illinois was moved to Grand Park in Westfield, Ind., due to unfavorable field conditions at Alexander Field. The Boilermakers won the series after taking game two of a Saturday doubleheader and the rubber game Sunday. Purdue snapped its 10-game losing streak in rubber games thanks to a 23-run outburst Sunday. After losing their midweek opener at No. 11 Louisville Tuesday, Purdue shut out Valparaiso, 2-0, in the home opener Wednesday. The Boilers won the game on a game-ending line drive double play for the second time this season. Purdue improved to 13-4 in home openers under Schreiber. SNIDANKO S GRAND SLAM, SEVEN RBI HIGHLIGHT BLOWOUT WIN VERSUS NIU Purdue scored multiple runs in seven consecutive innings to slug its way to a 23-5 rubber game win vs. Northern Illinois. Despite not entering the game until the sixth inning, Ted Snidanko finished the day with a career-high seven RBI and just a single shy of the cycle. He connected for a grand slam in the sixth inning as Purdue posted its second five-run frame of the game. It was the first slam by a Boilermaker since Sean McHugh at Michigan in May 2013 and he became the first Purdue player with seven RBI in a game since Josh Estill in April Snidanko nearly hit two grand slams. Purdue recorded 20 runs and 20 hits for the first time since wins against Illinois-Chicago in March (hits) and April (runs) of But the 23 runs Sunday were the most since beating Indiana, 25-8, in April 2006 in Bloomington and the 24 hits were Purdue s most since racking up a program-record 30 in a March 2012 victory at Murray State. BOILERMAKERS SNAP RUBBER GAME LOSING STREAK Not only did Purdue s 23-5 win vs. Northern Illinois snap a 10-game losing streak in weekend series rubber games, but it also allowed the Boilers to win a series after losing the opener for the first time since May 2009 at Michigan State. Purdue s last rubber game win was in April 2012 at Nebraska. The frustrating stretch of winning the opener but losing the series spanned 12 weekends from March 2010 through March of this season. During that stretch, the Boilers only won the middle game of a series twice after losing the opener. Nine of those 12 series in which Purdue won the opener but lost the weekend were in Big Ten play. FIVE STRAIGHT STRONG STARTS FROM PURDUE PITCHERS Since giving up 13 runs in the rubber game loss at Oklahoma March 8, Purdue has outscored the opposition However, 23 of those 41 runs came in the March 15 rubber game win vs. Northern Illinois. The real story the last five games has been the starting pitching. Mike Kornacker, Brett Haan, Matt Frawley, Gavin Downs and Shane Bryant have all worked at least five innings as the starting pitcher over the last five games. Only Kornacker gave up more than three runs. They ve combined for 29 1/3 innings of nine-run ball, recording 21 strikeouts vs. five walks and a 2.45 ERA. Purdue pitchers recorded 25 strikeouts vs. only three walks in the NIU series. Offensively, the Boilers scored 10-plus runs in three of four games from March The season-high for runs last year was eight. WOOD WINS B1G PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS FOR MONSTER SERIES AT OKLAHOMA Kyle Wood did something productive in 12 of his 14 plate appearances in Purdue s series at Oklahoma (March 6-8), earning the junior first baseman Big Ten Player of the Week honors. He was 9-for-11 with a three-run double, two solo home runs, seven RBI, two walks and four runs scored. He had multiple hits in all three games, highlighted by his first collegiate four-hit effort in the rubber game. Wood put up his big numbers predominantly against a tough Oklahoma rotation. The Sooners starting pitchers combined for 24 strikeouts over 17 1/3 innings in the series. But Wood also delivered an RBI single in his final at-bat of the weekend to win a lefty-lefty matchup vs. OU s closer in the eighth inning of Sunday s rubber game. Wood s 13-game reached base safely streak ended in the March 17 loss at No. 11 Louisville. He recorded multiple hits in eight of those contests. He was Purdue s first Big Ten Player of the Week honoree since Kyle Johnson was named Player and Freshman of the Week on April 1, 2013, following the Boilers first-ever sweep at Penn State. Despite making just two appearances on the mound this season, Wood has struck out 12 over 5 1/3 innings and 12 of the 26 batters he has faced. As a pitcher, he has helped lead Purdue to wins against Western Carolina and Valparaiso. Shipley has done it as a freshman thanks in part to his steady play at the most important defensive position. He has committed only two errors in 90 defensive chances and has not made an error since game two of the Sam Houston State doubleheader on Feb. 21. During his 13-game streak without an error he has handled 68 defensive chances cleanly. He had 19 defensive assists while playing every inning of the Northern Illinois series. Shipley has been involved in all three game-ending double plays this season. Cody Strong and Shipley teamed up on both game-ending line drive double plays, with the tying run aboard both times. Purdue won game one of the Feb. 26 doubleheader with Gonzaga on an L-64 double play that Shipley flipped to Strong for the final out at second base. For the March 18 home opener, Strong caught the line drive on the right side of the infield and fed the ball to Shipley at second for another bang-bang finish. Dating back to the start of the 2012 season, Purdue has closed out nine wins on notable game-ending double plays. That runner came around to score and stands as the only run the senior has been charged with in Dating back to the 2014 home opener, Gibbs has given up only 22 hits in 38 innings (5.21 hits per nine). By surrendering only 5.77 hits per nine innings last year, he posted the sixth best single-season clip in Purdue history. His 4.91 hits per nine in Big Ten play was a new program record. He posted a streak of 17 consecutive scoreless innings over seven appearances from April 5-25, VILARDO S 12-GAME REACHED BASE SAFELY STREAK SNAPPED Michael Vilardo s 12-game reached base safely streak ended in game one of the March 14 doubleheader with Northern Illinois. He has still managed to reach base safely in 16 of the first 19 games this season while batting leadoff every game. Vilardo has opened the game with a hit seven times. The transfer from the University of Pennsylvania produced multiple hits six times during his reached safely streak while going hitless only twice. Vilardo s 12-Game Reached Safely Streak:.360 (18-for-50), 5 XBH, 7 RBI, 10 R, 3 BB, 2 HBP 10 EXTRA-INNING GAMES SINCE ST. PATRICK S DAY 2014; LOTS OF DOUBLEHEADERS EARLY THIS YEAR After blowing a four-run lead in the ninth inning en route to losing to CSU Bakersfield in 11 innings on Feb. 28, 10 of Purdue s last 51 games (20 percent) dating back to St. Patrick s Day 2014 have gone to extra innings. The Boilers eight extra-innings games last year were the most during Doug Schreiber s 17-year tenure as head coach and are believed to be the most in program history overall. Purdue is 4-6 in the 10 extra-innings game, including 1-1 this year. The March 14 doubleheader vs. Northern Illinois was Purdue s fourth of the season already. The Boilers played three doubleheaders over a span of 13 days from Feb and four in 29 days from Feb. 13-March 14. Purdue had not played a doubleheader in three consecutive weekends since 2008, the final year of the Big Ten schedule featuring a doubleheader of two seven-inning games every Saturday. FRAWLEY STELLAR IN START VERSUS BAKERSFIELD Matt Frawley surrendered only three singles and one walk over seven shutout innings, striking out five and putting together the finest outing of the young season by a Purdue pitcher in the Feb. 28 loss to CSU Bakersfield in Phoenix. He worked three innings and retired 15 of 16 batters from the second through seventh innings. His strikeout and innings pitched totals were career highs as a Boilermaker. It marked the first time a Purdue pitcher worked at least seven shutout innings in an outing since Lance Breedlove led the way in a 3-0 win against Indiana at the 2012 Big Ten Tournament with 7 1/3 shutout innings. Bakersfield opened the ninth inning with five consecutive hits to rally for four runs and tie the game. Purdue was fortunate to get the game to extra innings after CSUB had the go-ahead run on third base with no outs. Alex Lyons got out of the jam thanks in part to an inexplicable suicide squeeze attempt with an 0-2 count on the batter with one out in the inning. However, the game marked the first time the Boilers suffered a loss after taking the lead into the ninth since the finale of last season s series at Minnesota when they gave up a three-run lead. The five double plays were the most since the Boilers turned four in a March 2012 win at Murray State. Gonzaga helped give Purdue a pair DPs in the game one win after an illegal slide into second base as the Boilers went for a twin killing. An inning later, a runner tried to score from second base on a sac fly to right center after Kyle Johnson slipped while making the catch. But he quickly flipped the ball to Jeff Evak, who hit cutoff man Cody Strong and Purdue completed the F8-942 put out at the plate. Undoubtedly the most exciting double play of the nine was the game-ending line drive to Harry Shipley at shortstop. Gonzaga had the bases loaded with one out and Purdue was clinging to a 5-3 lead, but the Boilers successfully doubled off the runner at second base for the final out. The Boilermakers turned 15 double plays in their first nine games season, but only three in the 10 games since. Purdue still ranks third in the Big Ten in double plays turned behind Penn State (21 in 16 games) and Nebraska (19 in 20 games). The Boilers turned 54 double plays in 2014 to lead the Big Ten. Purdue also ranks first in the league this year by throwing out 14 base stealers (11-of-23). Jack Picchiotti has thrown out 9-of-16 base stealers to rank ninth nationally in caught stealing percentage (.563) entering the week. KRIEG S REACHED BASE SAFELY STREAK SNAPPED AT 26 Brandon Krieg hit safely in each of the first seven games this season, extending his reached base safely streak to 26 consecutive games dating back to It ranked as the 13th longest active streak in the country when it was snapped Feb. 26 in game one of the doubleheader with Gonzaga. He had hit safely in 20 of the 26 games and overtook Kyle Wood s 24-game run last year for the longest reached base streak by an active Boiler. Cameron Perkins reached base safely in 50 consecutive games in Even with the streak snapped, Krieg is still off to a much better start at the plate than a year ago. Through 11 games last season he was 3-for-38. But he batted.325 from April 15 through the end of the season in 2014 and has hit safely in nine of the first 11 games this year. Krieg s Reached Safely Streak (April 15-Feb. 22):.340, 8 XBH, 9 RBI, 21 R, 14 BB, 3 HBP VILARDO, PICCHIOTTI & GIBBS STAR IN WILD DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF SHSU Purdue scored twice in the bottom of the 12th inning to rally for a 4-3 victory against Sam Houston State in the first game of a neutral-site doubleheader in Corpus Christi Feb. 21. Alec Olund scored the game-winning run as pinch runner on Michael Vilardo s sacrifice fly to right center field. Vilardo joined Kyle Wood and Brandon Krieg as active Boilers with a game-winning RBI in a walk-off victory. In the nightcap of the doubleheader, Purdue overcame deficits of 3-0 and 7-2 to win 9-7 after scoring three times in the top of the ninth inning. Vilardo again delivered the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly. Cody Strong led off the final inning of both games with a base hit against SHSU closer Ryan Brinley, who suffered both losses after giving up a combined five runs. Brinley entered the day having not allowed a run in his 27 innings of relief for SHSU dating back to Jack Picchiotti drove in the game-tying run in both games of the doubleheader. He came through with a pinch-hit, twoout RBI single in the seventh inning of game one. In the nightcap, he also singled home the tying run and later scored the go-ahead tally on Vilardo s sac fly. Daniel Sander s pinch hit double plated the game-tying run in the 12th inning of game one. It was Sander s first hit as a Boilermaker. Of the 21 innings played in the SHSU doubleheader, Purdue only held the lead in the final inning of both games The Boilers had not swept a doubleheader since April 2012 vs. Illinois. Matt Gibbs earned the victory in both games of the twinbill after retiring seven of the nine batters he faced over three scoreless innings of relief. He induced and started a game-ending double play in the nightcap and became the first Purdue pitcher since Chris Toneguzzi in April 2006 to earn the victory in consecutive games. Krieg, Vilardo and Wood joined Gibbs on the All-Tournament Team. The five-run deficit (7-2) the Boilers overcame in game two marked their largest comeback since scoring 10 times in the ninth inning at UCLA in May 2012 to rally back from a 10-5 hole entering the frame. However, Purdue s last win after trailing in the ninth inning was a May 2012 victory against Indiana State, 2-1 in 10 innings, in the final game at Lambert Field. A May 2005 doubleheader sweep of Iowa at Lambert is believed to be the last time Purdue won two games on the same day in its final at-bat. PURDUE PITCHERS STRIKE OUT 15 IN GAME THREE WIN AT WCU Matt Frawley (5), Kyle Wood (7) and Joe Eichmann (3) teamed up to strike out 15 Western Carolina batters as Purdue won game three of the series in Cullowhee, 9-5. It ranked as the third-highest strikeout total in program history and the most since the Boilers fanned 16 in a March 2010 victory at Ohio. Frawley struck out four his first time through the lineup. Wood struck out seven of the 15 batters he faced, striking out the side in the sixth and seventh innings. Eichmann struck out WCU s hitters in order after giving up a leadoff walk and a batter reaching on an error to open the ninth inning. The senior earned his first career save.
