UCLA scored five runs in the top of the fourth and never trailed in the opener. The Bruins dominated the second game of the series and led 16-2 until a nine-run Stanford bottom of the ninth. UCLA completed the three-game sweep in the finale to mark the first time a Stanford team had been swept at home since Arizona State took three in a row over the Cardinal on The Farm from April 11-13, Current Game Win Streak: Stanford 1 (April 18, 2008) Current Series Win Streak: UCLA 2 (May 19-21, 2006 March 30 April 1, 2007) Current Season Series Win Streak: UCLA 2 ( ) Series Notes: Stanford won nine straight series over UCLA ( ) before the Bruins took two-of-three in Los Angeles in 2006 and then swept the Cardinal at Stanford in Overall, UCLA has won five of the last seven between the clubs. PAC-10 UPDATE Stanford Takes Sole Possession Of First Place In Pac-10 - Stanford's victory at UCLA on Friday coupled with Arizona State's home loss to Oregon State moved the Cardinal into sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 with a 7-3 league mark. Arizona State and California are now one game at 6-4 with Oregon State (5-5) and UCLA (6-6) two games out of the lead. Washington and UCLA are tied for sixth with 3-4 records (2.5 games back) followed by Arizona (4-6, 3.0) and Washington State (3-7, 4.0). 2 Current Win Streak At Season-High Five Straight - Stanford ran its win streak to a new season-high five straight games by taking the series-opener at UCLA on April 18. The streak started with victories in the final two games of a series at Oregon State (April 12-13) and continued with non-conference home wins over Santa Clara (April 14) and San Francisco (April 16) before the April 18 UCLA win. Stanford Stays In Top 10 - Stanford remained ranked No. 10 in the latest Baseball America poll released on Monday, April 14. In the other polls, Stanford dropped one spot but is still ranked No. 9 nationally by Rivals.com, moved up three spots to No. 14 in the Collegiate Baseball rankings, dropped one spot to No. 16 on the USA Today/ESPN list and took one step up the ladder to No. 25 in the current NCBWA poll. Series Win Streak At 10 Straight - Stanford extended its string of regular season three-game series victories to 10 dating back to the final three series of 2007 by taking two-of-three at two-time defending national champion Oregon State from April The current streak is Stanford's longest regular season three-game series win streak since the Cardinal won 15 straight regular season three-game series from May 3, 2003 May 4, Stanford has also won five straight Pac-10 series to mark its longest conference series win streak since taking seven conference series in a row during the same run of 15 straight overall. Cardinal Picks Up First Extra Inning Win After Previous Tough Luck - Stanford picked up its first extra inning win of the season with an victory over San Francisco in 11 innings on April 16. The Cardinal has played a rash of extra inning games recently with five of its last 11 contests extending beyond nine frames. Stanford had posted just an record in the first four of those contests before the San Francisco win. Stanford had not played an extra inning game in its first 22 contests of the season before the recent run. Marquess 10th On All-Time NCAA Division I Win List - Mark Marquess ranks 10th on the all-time win list for NCAA Division I coaches with an all-time record of (.665) over 1968 games. Marquess' current win total (all at Stanford) also ranks him sixth among active coaches. Stanford Perfect On Several Accounts - Stanford has not suffered a loss on the weekend with a 12-0 mark as the Cardinal is 7-0 on Saturdays and 5-0 on Sundays. Stanford has also not lost in a rubber game (6-0) or a three-game series finale (7-0). Rubber Game Record - Stanford has a phenomenal run in series rubber games in The Cardinal has needed to win the rubber game to capture the series in six of its seven series this season and has succeeded on each occasion with a three-game sweep of Cal State Fullerton from February 29 - March 2 the only exception. Stanford Snaps Series-Opener Losing Skid - Stanford's victory at UCLA on April 18 snapped a five-game skid in series-opener. The victory marked the first time the Cardinal had won a series-opener since a victory over Cal State on February 29. Home Advantage - Stanford has had a nice home field advantage at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond throughout the years. The facility has served as a host site for 13 NCAA Regionals, as well as NCAA Super Regionals on five occasions. Stanford has clinched 10 of its 15 trips to the CWS at Sunken Diamond. Stanford has had 43 consecutive winning seasons at home and recorded at least 17 home wins in each of its last 12 campaigns with an amazing (.751) home mark over the last 12-plus seasons. Stanford has never had a losing season at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond in the school's recorded history. The Cardinal is off to a 13-7 start in its first 20 home games of Starting Rotation Pitching Well - Stanford's three primary starters have pitched well in Erik Davis (5-1, 4.37, 47.1 IP, 43 SO) struggled early but has been excellent in winning his last four starts, combining for a 4-0 record and a 2.91 ERA with a current stretch of three consecutive complete games and 32 strikeouts in 34.0 innings. Jeffrey Inman (5-0, 1.49, 36.1 IP, 20 SO) has also won four straight starts and given up just two earned runs in those starts over 24.2 frames. Jeremy Bleich (2-2, 1.38, 26.0 IP, 18 SO) equaled his win total in all of 2007 with victories in each of his first two outings of Although Bleich has suffered two losses and a no decision in his last three starts, his ERA has actually gone down 81 points in those three starts as only one of the 12 runs scored against him was earned. 3 Avoiding Big Losing Streaks - Stanford has not lost more than two consecutive games all season. Busy Schedule - Stanford is 20 games into a stretch of 29 contests over a 37-day period from March 21 April 30. Fifth All-Time Winningest Program - Stanford is the fifth all-time winningest program in college baseball history with a record of (.614) in 4161 games over 115-plus seasons. Stanford has won two College World Series titles in its 15 trips to Omaha and finished second on three other occasions, while winning at least one game in every CWS appearance. The Cardinal has added five NCAA Super Regional titles, 14 NCAA Regional crowns and 20 conference championships. Stringer Nearing All-Time Save List - David Stringer has 10 career saves and is now just one shy of tying Aaron Dorlarque ( ) for 10th place. Significantly Better Pitching And Fielding In Stanford has had much better pitching and fielding numbers in Stanford has recorded a 4.18 ERA that is 1.83 points better than the 6.01 the team recorded as the worst mark in school history in The Cardinal's.975 fielding percentage is 12 points ahead of last year's.963 and only.002 points shy of the school record.977. Day And Night - Stanford has been significantly better this season during the day (14-3-2) than at night (6-8). Better Against The Best - Stanford is against ranked squads (according to Baseball America at the time of the game) and versus teams not in the Baseball America poll at the time of the game. Five Two-Way Players On The Roster - Stanford has five two-way players listed on the roster in Brendan Domaracki (OF/RHP), Michael Marshall (1B/RHP), Sean Ratliff (OF/LHP), Drew Storen (RHP/3B) and Austin Yount (3B/RHP). Ratliff and Yount have both already contributed on the mound and at the plate. Domaracki has played but yet to pitch, while Storen and Marshall have both pitched but yet to play a position or hit. Huge Roster And Pitching Staff - Stanford has 45 players on its 2008 roster with 23 of those listed as either a pitcher or a twoway player. Stanford may need a lot of depth, especially on the mound, in the first year of college baseball's condensed season as the Cardinal is still scheduled to play 56 regular season games in approximately three weeks less time than the club has in the past Honors - Stanford's Cord Phelps and Sean Ratliff have already received 2008 honors. Ratliff is on the 2008 Wallace Award Watch List and was also named the Pac-10 Player of the Week on April 7. Phelps was selected as the Stanford Muscle-Milk Student- Athlete of the Week on April 15. Honors Candidates - Stanford has many players worthy of honors consideration in Jason Castro, Erik Davis, Jeffrey Inman Randy Molina, Cord Phelps and Sean Ratliff have all been nominated for NCBWA recognition. Rookies Making Case For Freshmen All-American Honors - Stanford has had a total of 14 freshmen play over the first 33 games and has three making legitimate noise for Freshman All-American consideration. Reliever Drew Storen (1-2, 2.83, 4 SV, 28.2 IP, 28 SO) arguably has the best case to be considered among the nation's best freshmen. Storen paces the team in both saves and appearances (15) with saves in each of his last two outings. Zach Jones (.268, 3 HR, 18 RBI, 7 SB) and Jake Schlander (.210, 15 RBI, 2 SB) have made the biggest impact among position players and are not far behind Storen in worthiness of a spot on Freshmen All-American squads. The duo has spent most of the season as the team's left side of the infield with Schlander starting all 33 of the team's games at shortstop and Jones making 30 starts (29 at third base). Although Schlander has struggled offensively, he has made just three errors in the field in 133 defensive chances for a.977 fielding percentage as the team's shortstop. Ben Clowe (.351, 2 HR, 5 RBI) has also started to make an impact offensively with a current career-high five-game hit streak along with two homers, five RBI and a.400 (6-15) batting average along with a double, two homers and five RBI during the run. March 5 Stanford-Saint Mary's Game Ruled A Tie - The March 5 game between Stanford and Saint Mary's in Moraga that was tied 7-7 after nine innings when darkness fell has officially been ruled a tie. The teams had planned to resume the game prior to their regularly scheduled game at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond on April 23. Next Up - After finishing a string of seven of nine games away from Klein Field at Sunken Diamond with the final two games of its current series Saturday-Sunday, April at UCLA (2 pm, 1 pm, PT) and a single game at Santa Clara (Monday, April 21, 5 pm, PT), the Cardinal will return home to host Saint Mary's (Wednesday, April 23, 6 pm, PT) and USC (Friday-Sunday, April 25-27, 6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PT) in a four-game homestand. Marquess reached his most recent milestone on April 6, 2008, when he won his 1300th career game (all at Stanford) when the Cardinal defeated top-ranked Arizona State, 10-2, in a rubber game against the top-ranked Sun Devils. Marquess now has a (.665) all-time record in 1968 career games, as well as equally impressive marks in postseason (112-52,.683), NCAA Regional (68-25,.731), NCAA Super Regional (10-4,.714), CWS (34-23,.596) and Pac-10 ( ,.600) action. He is currently ranked sixth among all active NCAA Division I coaches in victories and 10th on the all-time list among Division I coaches. Other recent milestones included win No with a victory over Florida State on February 9, Just over two years later, he picked up win No versus Nevada on February 17, He became the 16th NCAA Division I head baseball coach to win 1200 collegiate games just over another two years after that when the Cardinal defeated California at Sunken Diamond on March 5, He also won his 100th career postseason game in Stanford's NCAA Super Regional clinching victory over Long Beach State (June 7, 2003). The 1969 Stanford graduate has led the Cardinal to two CWS titles and three runner-up showings in five CWS championship appearances, as well as 13 College World Series trips, five NCAA Super Regional titles, 14 NCAA Regional championships and 12 Pac-10 crowns (includes Southern Division and shared titles). Stanford's two CWS championships under Marquess came in back-to-back fashion in 1987 and 1988 as the Cardinal is just one of four teams to have ever won back-toback Division I College World Series titles. The three runner-up showings have all come this decade with the Cardinal taking second in Omaha in 2000, 2001 and Maybe even more amazing, all 13 teams that Marquess has taken to the College World Series have won at least one game. Stanford has qualified for the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship 24 times in the first 31 seasons under Marquess, including a school record run of 13 straight appearances in postseason play from He has been named NCAA Coach of the Year three times and has received Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division Coach of the Year honors on nine occasions, most recently with his Pac-10 selection in The Cardinal has been at.500 or better in 30 of the first 31 campaigns under NCAA DIVISION I BASEBALL ALL-TIME COACHES WIN LIST Coach, Current or Last School (Yr.) He was also an accomplished football and baseball standout on The Farm, and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He is one of only 10 people to have ever both played and coached in the College World Series. Marquess was the starting first baseman and a First Team All-American on Stanford's 1967 CWS squad and played five seasons in the minor leagues with the Chicago White Sox organization. STANFORD COACHING STAFF Dean Stotz is in his 32nd season with Stanford Baseball and his ninth as the team's associate head coach after he was promoted to the position prior to the 2000 season following 23 years of service as an assistant.
