Marquess entered the season ranked 9th on the NCAA s all-time Division I victory list and th on the all-time winning percentage list for Division I coaches. For active coaches, he began the season ninth in victories and th in winning percentage. He became the rd coach in the history of NCAA Division I baseball to reach the -win mark with a victory over Florida State on February 9,. Just over two years later, he picked up win No. versus Nevada on February,. He won his th career postseason game in Stanford s NCAA Super Regional clinching victory over Long Beach State (//). The 99 Stanford graduate has led the Cardinal to two CS titles and three runner-up showings in five CS championship appearances, as well as College orld Series trips, five NCAA Super Regional titles, NCAA Regional championships and Pac- crowns (includes Southern Division and shared titles). Stanford has also qualified for the NCAA Tournament times in the first years under Marquess. He has been named NCAA Coach of the Year three times and has received Pac- or Pac- Southern Division Coach of the Year honors on nine occasions, most recently with his selection in. The Cardinal has had winning campaigns in seasons prior to this season under his leadership and finished either first or second in the prestigious Pacific- (formerly Pac- Southern Division) times in the last years. Stanford has had players drafted by professional baseball in the past 9 seasons, including first round selections in the last years. A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Marquess was the head coach of the 9 United States Olympic baseball team that captured the gold medal. Marquess was also an accomplished football and baseball standout on The Farm and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He is one of only six collegiate baseball head coaches to have both played and coached in the College orld Series. Marquess was the starting first baseman and a First Team All-American on Stanford s 9 CS squad and played four seasons of minor league baseball with the Chicago hite Sox organization. COMMENTS FROM MARK MARQUESS (on being ranked No. ) e re flattered, but it really doesn t mean that much right now other than we re off to a good start. e ve played some Top teams early (Cal State Fullerton and Texas) and won five of those six games. (on the team's - start) e're off to a good start, especially considering the people we play. e've played some very strong teams. The things that I've been most pleased with is our defense. For the most part, our pitchers have also thrown a lot of strikes. hen we haven't hit that well, we've been able to pitch pretty well to keep us in games, but when we haven't pitched as well as we can, we've also been able to score some runs. It's been pretty balanced. (on USC) USC has an unbelievable baseball tradition. They're off to a similar start that we were last year (Stanford was -, USC is -), but they're a solid team. USC will be there when it's all said and done. I just hope they wait a week before they get it going. Especially playing down there, it will be difficult. They are one of the better teams in the conference. (on contributions from the freshman class) "e've gotten some great contributions from our freshman class, especially from Blake Holler in the way he has pitched in his last two starts. Adam Sorgi has played well at shortstop and Jim Rapoport has come in and got his feet wet. e'll need those guys to help us have success this season." (on winning two-of-three versus then No. Texas last weekend) It s big for us because Texas is one of the best teams in the country. e didn t hit the ball well at all, but a lot of that had to do with Texas pitching staff. But, in the two games we did win, the hits we got were at the right time with people on base. STANFORD COACHING STAFF Dean Stotz is in his th campaign with Stanford Baseball and his fifth season as associate head coach after he was promoted to the position prior to the campaign. Stotz served for years as an assistant. Stotz currently coaches third base while also handling various offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Tom Kunis is in his fifth season as Stanford s pitching coach, while Dave Nakama is in his fifth year overall as a Stanford assistant coach. Stanford Baseball (NCAA Champions - 9, 9) 9
