Recent milestone victories were his 1100th career win versus Nevada (2/17/03), his 1000th against Florida State (2/9/01) and his 100th career post season win versus Long Beach State (6/7/03). He has been named NCAA Coach of the Year three times and has received Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division Coach of the Year honors on nine occasions, most recently with his selection in The Cardinal has assured itself of its 26th winning campaign in 27 seasons under his leadership this year and has finished either first or second in the prestigious Pacific-10 (formerly Pac-10 Southern Division) 20 times in the last 22 years. Stanford has had 108 professional baseball draft picks in the past 19 seasons, including 14 first round selections in the last 17 years. A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Marquess was the head coach of the 1988 United States Olympic baseball team that captured the gold medal. Marquess was also an accomplished football and baseball standout on The Farm and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He is one of only six collegiate baseball head coaches to have both played and coached in the College World Series. Marquess was the starting first baseman and a First Team All-American on Stanford s 1967 CWS squad and played four seasons of minor league baseball with the Chicago White Sox organization. COMMENTS FROM MARK MARQUESS (on CWS Championship Series opponent Rice): I ve heard about them from a lot of other coaches. I hadn t had a chance to see them until we got to Omaha. Obviously they have a strong pitching staff. They ve been able to rest and have some depth. They play well. We ll enjoy this one and then try to get some type of game plan to face them. (On Stanford s victory over Cal State Fullerton on Thursday): It was some kind of game, especially in an elimination game to play in the national championship. It wasn t pretty, but we found a way to win. We played with a lot of heart. I m very proud of my team and the way we battled back. It was a clutch performance when we were shorthanded. (On Stanford s victory over Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday What can you say. It was a great college baseball game. For us, it was the pitching of John Hudgins and the two home runs by Carlos Quentin. John threw a complete game versus one of the best teams in college baseball on four days rest. He was masterful. Carlos home run in the eighth inning was huge. It was a great atmosphere and great game by both teams. (On the team s fifth straight appearance in the College World Series) It helps you to have a better chance to win the College World Series when you have the experience of being there a few times. To have that experience is really an advantage. The other major factor is just to be playing your best baseball at the right time. (On All-American candidates Ryan Garko, Carlos Quentin and John Hudgins) Ryan Garko, Carlos Quentin and John Hudgins are having their best seasons yet. If you re going to be good as a team, your older players are going to have their best seasons. STANFORD COACHING STAFF Dean Stotz is in his 27th campaign with Stanford Baseball and his fourth season as associate head coach after he was promoted to the position prior to the 2000 campaign. Stotz served for 23 years as an assistant. Stotz currently coaches third base while also handling various offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Tom Kunis is in his fourth season as Stanford s pitching coach, while Dave Nakama is in his fourth year overall as a Stanford assistant coach. 12 Stanford Baseball (NCAA Champions , 1988)
