Live Stats: OMavs.com Live Video: OMavs.com TV: none Radio: none This Weekend Omaha women s soccer is set to open the 2017 regular season with a pair of games in Washington, where they will face Eastern Washington on Friday, Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. (CT) and Gonzaga on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 8 p.m. (CT). About the Mavericks Omaha finished the 2016 season with a record and a mark in Summit League play. The Mavericks return six starters from a season ago, including their top three scorers. Senior Carlie Cook led the team in points (15) and goals (six) last season. Senior Lydia Holtmann tallied 10 points (four goals, two assists) while junior Emily Romero had a team-best five assists. The Mavericks also return Erin Dimon (senior) and Sophia Roux (sophomore). Roux earned a spot on the All-Summit Newcomer team in Senior Jessica Bollinger helped anchor a UNO defense that produced four shutouts in Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Bunker appeared in four games with three starts last season and posted a 1.39 goals-against average with 13 saves. 3 OMAHA WOMEN'S SOCCER Gonzaga and Saint Mary s tied for eighth in the 2017 West Coast Conference women s soccer preseason poll. Defeated Mount Royal (Alberta) in an exhibition match, 9-0, on Aug. 11 Last season: (2-7-0 West Coast Conference) Gonzaga finished ninth in the WCC regular season standings. Key Returners (seven returning starters from last season) Callie Best: 5 points (2 goals, one assist) Savannah Van Citters: 5 points (1 goal, three assists) Madeline Gotta: Earned All-West Coast Conference honorable mention honors, 2 points (2 assists) History vs. Gonzaga Sunday is the first meeting all-time between Omaha and Gonzaga. Last Time Out Omaha lost to No. 17 Arkansas 3-0 in an exhibition game last Thursday to open the 2017 season. The Razorbacks opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Reid Sibley fired a shot from 15 yards out that found the right side of the goal. Sibley then scored an unassisted goal in the 34th minute to put Arkansas ahead 2-0 at the half. In the second half, Parker Goins scored an unassisted goal in the 54th minute to make the score 3-0. Susie Dineen, Abby Meader and Cydney Skinner each had a shot for Omaha. Erin Bunker made three saves on the evening. Mavericks Picked Fifth Omaha is fifth in the 2017 Summit League Preseason Poll; the conference office announced last Thursday. Denver was the favorite to win the Summit League, garnering one first place vote and 41 points. South Dakota State and North Dakota State were second with each school receiving two first place votes and 40 points. Oral Roberts earned three first place votes and 39 points to come in fourth. Omaha and South Dakota tied for fifth with 22 points, while Western Illinois (12) and Fort Wayne (8) rounded it out in seventh and eighth places, respectively. The One to Watch Lydia Holtmann was included on the Summit League's Players to Watch list after finishing 2016 with 10 points on four goals and two assists. Holtmann has 20 points on seven goals and six assists in 56 games and is Omaha s active career leader in assists, goals, games played and points. Local Talent a Strong Influence on 2017 Roster The 2017 Mavericks will have plenty of homegrown talent on the roster as eight players are from Nebraska. Seven of those players are from the Omaha metro area while one is from Lincoln. It s not only the players that have Omaha ties as head coach Tim Walters is a Creighton graduate while graduate assistant Ava Doetsch was a four-year starter for the Mavericks. Players from the Omaha metro area: Bailey Cascio, Erinoelle Clifton, Susie Dineen, Mallory Edwards, Natalie Johnson, Emily Romero and Jaden Thiem. From Lincoln: Abby Meader. Another Stellar Year in the Classroom Omaha maintained a strong academic record during the school year, posting a spring GPA of Nine players earned Dean's List accolades while two more made the Chancellor s List. The Mavericks placed 24 studentathletes on the league s academic honor roll, and 14 players earned a spot on the Commissioner s List of Academic Excellence. The New Boss Head coach Tim Walters is in his first season at the helm of the Omaha women s soccer program after being named the head coach in December Walters, who spent six years as an assistant on the UNO men's soccer coaching staff, helped the squad post an overall (.620) record over the past three seasons, including two Summit League regular-season championships (2014, 2016). The Coaching Staff Coach Walters brought in three new coaches to fill out his staff in Kelly Farrell joined the Mavericks as an assistant coach. The Schedule Omaha opened the 2017 season on Aug. 10 with an exhibition match at national tournament qualifier Arkansas. The Mavericks open the regular-season with a visit to national tournament qualifier Eastern Washington (Aug. 18) and Gonzaga (Aug. 20). The home opener is against Northern Iowa on Aug. 25. Omaha returns to the road for games against Kansas State (Aug. 30) and North Dakota (Sept. 1) before returning home to play Missouri State (Sept. 8). Three non-conference road games are up next for the Mavericks vs. UMKC (Sept. 10), Creighton (Sept. 16) and Drake (Sept. 20). NCAA Division II national tournament qualifier Rockhurst visits Caniglia Field to wrap up the non-conference slate on Sept. 24. Omaha plays three-straight road games to start Summit League play. The Mavericks open with a trip to Fort Wayne on Sept. 28. October begins with games vs. South Dakota State (Oct. 6) and North Dakota State (Oct. 8). SDSU won the conference tournament in 2016 and lost to Nebraska in a shootout in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. NDSU took home the Summit League regular-season crown. The Mavericks play three of their final four games at home to close out the regular season. Denver, the league s preseason favorite, comes to Caniglia on Oct. 15.
