Scouting Report: Omaha The Mavericks are overall, and in Summit League play. UNO went last week in a pair of home matches. Omaha dropped a 1-0 decision to crosstown foe, Creighton, last Tuesday. Diego Gutierrez had a programhigh two shots on goal. Goalkeeper Joseph Ghitis made one save and allowed one goal. On Saturday, UNO played to a 1-1 draw against conference rival Fort Wayne. Xavier Gomez converted a penalty kick in the 47th minute to tie the game at 1-1. UNO outshot Fort Wayne 17-4 on the evening. Gomez had a team-best five shots. The Mavericks also won the corner kick battle 6-3. The two teams combined for 32 fouls and seven yellow cards. Maverick Bites Omaha played Creighton in front of a program-high 4,986 fans at Caniglia Field Last Tuesday. Through 11 games, five different Mavericks have scored a goal. Overall, 11 different players have registered a point. Ibisevic leads the team in scoring with six goals and an assist for 13 points. Hamzat is second in scoring with five goals and an assist for 11 points. Xavier Gomez is third with three goals and leads the team with four assists. Eight UNO players have registered at least two points. The Eagles are overall and in the Atlantic Sun. FGCU defeated conference rival North Florida last Saturday, 2-0. Shak Adams, Robert Ferrer and Preston Kilwien each have three goals on the season to lead FGCU. Adams, Ferrer and Dennis Zapata each have a team-high seven points. Looking Back No. 24 Omaha fought Fort Wayne to a 1-1 draw in double overtime last Saturday at Caniglia Field. Xavier Gomez stepped up and fired the penalty kick into the right side of the goal for his third tally of the season. Denzel Woods looked to put the Mavericks in front in the 55th minute, but his shot went off the crossbar. Elvir Ibisevic saw his head kept out of goal in the 80th minute. Omaha outshot Fort Wayne 17-4 and held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Mavericks also won the corner kick battle 6-3. The two teams combined for 32 fouls and seven yellow cards. Caniglia Dominance Since opening Caniglia Field in 2013, the Mavericks have dominated the opposition, going a combined and outscoring opponents The Mavs have a record of in Summit League action ( ) at Caniglia Field. Three different Mavericks have played over 800 minutes in goalkeeper Joseph Ghitis and midfielders Xavier Gomez and Cole Nelson. Two more Mavericks, Seth Rinderknecht and Jacob Weiler, have played more than 800 minutes. Nine players have made their Omaha debuts this year, highlighted by Stevie Siy and Miguel Gomez combing for 16 starts and five assists. Outscoring teams 16-7 on the season thus far, Omaha has only allowed three first-half goals and has surrendered only 99 shots (34 on goal). UNO is when it concedes the first goal and 5-0 when scoring first. Shooting Star Forward Elvir Ibisevic has 13 points on the season coming from six goals and an assist. Ibisevic has gotten off 26 shots this season, 13 of them on goal. The sophomore leads the Summit League in goals (six) and points (13). Ibisevic has also scored three game-winning goals this season. Climbing the Charts Joseph Ghitis, Xavier Gomez, Emmanuel Hamzat and Elvir Ibisevic have ascended the Omaha all-time charts during their time at UNO. Ghitis is the program s career leader in wins (24), shutouts (14), save percentage (.761) and goals-against average (0.94). Gomez now ranks eighth all-time in career points with 19. He has ascended to sixth in assists with seven. Gomez also is seventh in total shots (66) and eighth in shots on goal (26). Hamzat is the career leader in points per game (0.86/game). He is now third in career goals with 11. Hamzat is fifth in career game-winning goals with five and total points with 25. Ibisevic is third in career points per game (0.83/game) and game-winning goals (three). The sophomore is now sixth in career points (24) and goals (10). Still Ranked College Soccer News has Omaha ranked No. 24 in their latest poll, but Top Drawer Soccer has dropped the Mavericks from the latest Top 25. Soccer America and United Soccer Coaches will release their rankings on Tuesday. Oh Captain My Captain This season, the Mavericks have two captains in senior Jacob Weiler and junior Cole Nelson. He tallied the game-winning goal in the 87th minute of Sunday's 2-1 win over Bradley by slipping the ball under the on-rushing Brave goalkeeper. Weiler earned his first weekly award of the season and the second of his career. He anchored a defensive unit that allowed only two combined shots on goal in a pair of wins over UC Riverside (1-0) and Bradley (2-1). Weiler scored the game-winning tally in Friday's victory over the Highlanders. Ibisevic Repeats as Player of the Week Elvir Ibisevic was named Summit League Offensive Player of the Week for his performance the week of Aug. 28- Sept. 3. Ibisevic collected the second offensive player-of-the-week honor of his career after scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory vs. Houston Baptist at the UTRGV Invitational. Ibisevic, Siy Claim Summit League Honors Elvir Ibisevic s three-goal performance against No. 17 Virginia Tech helped him earn his first Summit League Offensive Player of the Week honor on Aug. 28. Stevie Siy garnered Summit League Defensive Player of the Week honors with two assists against Virginia Tech. Nelson Earns a National Honor On Tuesday (Sept. 12), Cole Nelson was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week. Nelson was one of 11 players across the country to earn the honor. The Kansas native figured in the scoring of Omaha s first goal in the come-from-behind win over Bradley. All-Tournament Accolades Emmanuel Hamzat, Cole Nelson and Seth Rinderknecht each were named to the Wolverine All-Tournament team. Hamzat and Nelson each scored in the victory over Utah Valley, while Rinderknecht anchored the Maverick defensive line. All-Tournament Mavericks Joseph Ghitis, Elvir Ibisevic, Stevie Siy and Denzel Woods all earned spots on the Rio Grande Valley All-Tournament Team. Ghitis, who did not allow a goal in the tournament, was named the tournament s Defensive MVP. Ibisevic scored the game-winning goal vs. Houston Baptist and took home Offensive MVP honors. Siy and Woods were integral parts of a defensive unit that allowed only four shots on goal over a two-game span. Mavericks Win Rio Grande Valley Crown Two road wins for Omaha yielded the title at the Rio Grande Valley Invitational. The Mavericks defeated Houston Baptist on Sept. 1 and took down UTRGV 1-0 on Sept. 3. National Recognition Following the first three-goal game in program history, Elvir Ibisevic was named the United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week on Aug. 29. His national player of the week honor was the first of his career and the first in program history. The NCAA also named the Omaha men s soccer team their team of the week on Aug. 31. Ibisevic Named to the TDS Team of the Week Following his seven-point performance against Virginia Tech, Elvir Ibisevic earned a spot on the Top Drawer Soccer Division I Men s Soccer Team of the Week (Aug ). The sophomore had a hat trick and an assist during Omaha s 5-1 rout of No. 17 Virginia Tech last Sunday. Ibisevic Sets Omaha Single-Match Record Elvir Ibisevic set a school single-match record when he scored three goals against No. 17 Virginia Tech (Aug. 27).

5 OMAHA MEN'S SOCCER Ibisevic also set a single-game mark with seven points in the game. Previously, seven different Mavericks had scored two goals in a match, but no one had scored three. Quick Strike Elvir Ibisevic needed just over 10 minutes to find the back of the net three times in a 5-1 win against Virginia Tech. Ibisevic scored the second-fastest hat trick in DI soccer history. Night of Firsts During Omaha s match against No. 17 Virginia Tech (Aug. 27), the Mavericks set three program records. UNO totaled 17 points on five goals and seven assists. Welcome Back The Mavericks return 18 letterwinners to the program for the 2017 season, including seven starters for the 2016 Summit League regular-season champions. Of the 87 points tallied as a team last season, the Omaha offense returns 50 of those points. Offensively last season, Emmanuel Hamzat tallied 14 points on six goals and two assists. Elvir Ibisevic had 11 points on four goals and three assists, while Seth Rinderknecht added two goals and two assists. In the net, Joseph Ghitis returns for his senior season. Along with Ghitis, Ugo Tritz is back for his sophomore season. Last year, Ghitis went 9-4-4, recorded six shutouts, posted a goals-against average of 1.06 and tallied 62 saves. Tritz went 1-1 with a 0.50 goals-against average. The Newcomers The Mavericks welcomed 11 newcomers in freshmen Oliver Bihuniak, Miguel Gomez, Ed Gordon, Diego Gutierrez, Connor Jokerst, Tim Kaftan, Stephen Siy and Matt Smith and transfers Brahan Gamarra, Gonzalo Ledesma and Billy Hoffmann. Mavericks Picked Second in Summit League Omaha was picked second in the 2017 Summit League Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Mavericks received one first-place vote and 21 total points for second, while last season's tournament champion Denver was the preseason league favorite with five first-place votes and 25 points overall. Western Illinois came in third with 14 points; Oral Roberts was fourth with 13 points, Fort Wayne (nine) followed in fifth and Eastern Illinois (eight) rounded it out in sixth. Preseason Honors Jacob Weiler was named to the Summit League Players to Watch List. Weiler anchored the Omaha defense last season and was a Second Team all-league honoree. Local Talent a Strong Influence on 2017 Roster The 2017 Mavericks will have plenty of homegrown talent on the roster as 10 players are from Nebraska. Nine of those players are from the Omaha metro area while one is from South Sioux City. It s not only the players that have Omaha ties as head coach Jason Mims spent 10 years at Creighton University as an assistant coach. Goalkeeper coach Daniel Galvis played two years at Bellevue University before moving on to coach with the Bruins and Bluejays. Coaching Changes Head coach Jason Mims named Nate Baker as the men s soccer assistant coach in March. Baker comes to Omaha after five seasons at the United States Naval Academy, where he served as the associate head coach in 2016 and was the top assistant coach since Looking Forward Omaha returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 14 at Michigan.
