3 OMAHA MEN'S SOCCER This season WIU has scored 19 goals. Drew Whalen and Fernando Pacheco have combined for 15 goals this season. Whalen has eight goals on the year, while Pacheco has seven. Angelo Amato, Ben Fiddes and Armel Kouassi each have one goal. Defensively, the Fighting Leathernecks have allowed 25 goals this season. Three different players have spent time between the pipes this season with Tim Trilk leading the way. Trilk is 4-3 this season with a 1.55 goals-against average, and a.762 save percentage. Tim Hansen is 0-4 on the year with a 3.50 goals-against average and a.588 save percentage. Last Time Out Omaha lost a hard-fought non-conference contest, 2-1, in double overtime at No. 24 Michigan last Saturday. UNO opened the scoring late in the first half as Xavier Gomez played a ball from the left wing that found Diego Gutierrez at the top of the box. Gutierrez gathered the ball and slipped his shot inside the left post for a 1-0 lead. Michigan scored the equalizer early in the second half on a set piece when Marc Ybarra played a ball into the six-yard box to Mohammed Zakyi who headed the ball into the net to tie the game 1-1 in the 61st minute. The Wolverines ended the match in the second overtime period. Tristan Jacob sent a free kick into the box where Zakyi was able to get a foot on the ball for the game-winner. The Mavericks and the Wolverines combined for 34 shots during 105 minutes of play. UM held an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. The two squads combined for 29 fouls and five yellow cards. This and That Omaha played Creighton in front of a program-high 4,986 fans at Caniglia Field on Sept. 26. Through 13 games this season, UNO has started 19 different players. Four different Mavericks have played over 1,000 minutes in defender Seth Rinderknecht, goalkeeper Joseph Ghitis and midfielders Xavier Gomez and Cole Nelson. Elvir Ibisevic and Jacob Weiler each have played over 900 minutes. Nine players have made their Omaha debuts this year, highlighted by Stevie Siy and Miguel Gomez combing for 17 starts and six assists. Outscoring teams on the season thus far, Omaha has only allowed four first-half goals and has surrendered 133 shots (50 on frame). UNO is when it concedes the first goal and 5-2 when scoring first. Since the inception of the program, UNO has a home mark and has outscored opponents Ibisevic Named Summit League Male Athlete of the Month Elvir Ibisevic was named the Summit League's Male Athlete of the Month for August/September. Ibisevic becomes this first Omaha male student-athlete to earn the award after capturing two straight Athlete of the Week honors in August and September. The sophomore scored the first hat trick in school history against then No. 17 Virginia Tech on Aug. 27. It was the second-fastest hat trick in Division I history, taking a little more than 10 minutes. Ibisevic also set a school record with seven points in the win over Virginia Tech. Following his record-breaking performance, he was named to the Topdrawersoccer.com national team of the week and United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week. His efforts have guided Omaha to a record and helped earn the program's first National Top 10 ranking earlier this season. Currently, Ibisevic ranks sixth nationally in goals scored (eight) and 18th in total points (17). Mavericks in the Classroom Omaha was named a United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award winner for the academic year, the association announced Thursday. Formerly the NSCAA, United Soccer Coaches recognized 824 collegiate teams (286 men, 538 women) that posted a cumulative team grade point average of 3.0 or higher in Omaha was among one of 202 schools to have both its men's and women's teams honored. The Omaha men's soccer team finished the year with a 3.30 team GPA. This award is the fifth overall team academic honor for the men's side. The Power of One Through 13 matches this season, Omaha has played to a 1-0 result five times. The Mavericks are 3-2 when the score ends up 1-0 including three straight victories early this season. The sophomore leads the Summit League in goals (eight) and points (17). Ibisevic has also scored three game-winning goals this season. Oh Captain My Captain This season, the Mavericks have two captains in senior Jacob Weiler and junior Cole Nelson. Close Calls In eight games this season, the Mavericks are 5-4 in games decided by one goal. Omaha has won three 1-0 games and defeated Bradley and Grand Canyon, 2-1. Ghitis Captures Weekly League Honor Joseph Ghitis was named the Summit League Defensive Player of the Week for his performance Sept Ghitis earned his first weekly award of the season and seventh of his career. He collected his third shutout of the season and school-record 14th of his career in the 0-0 double-overtime draw at regionally-ranked Eastern Illinois. Ghitis also lowered his league-leading goals against average to 0.62 on the year. Rinderknecht Earns Weekly League Honor Seth Rinderknecht was named the Summit League Defensive Player of the Week for his performance Sept Rinderknecht collected his first career player of the week honor. He anchored a defensive backline that allowed just two goals in two matches at the Wolverine Invitational. Nelson Earns a National Honor On Tuesday (Sept. 12), Cole Nelson was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week. Nelson was one of 11 players across the country to earn the honor. The Kansas native figured in the scoring of Omaha s first goal in the come-from-behind win over Bradley. Hamzat, Weiler Named Summit League Players of the Week Emmanuel Hamzat was named Summit League Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Jacob Weiler garnered the Defensive Player of the Week award for their performances Sept Hamzat collected his first weekly award of the season and the second of his career. He tallied the game-winning goal in the 87th minute of Sunday's 2-1 win over Bradley by slipping the ball under the on-rushing Brave goalkeeper. Weiler earned his first weekly award of the season and the second of his career. He anchored a defensive unit that allowed only two combined shots on goal in a pair of wins over UC Riverside (1-0) and Bradley (2-1). Weiler scored the game-winning tally in Friday's victory over the Highlanders. Ibisevic Repeats as Player of the Week Elvir Ibisevic was named Summit League Offensive Player of the Week for his performance the week of Aug. 28-Sept. 3. Ibisevic collected the second offensive player-of-the-week honor of his career after scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory vs. Houston Baptist at the UTRGV Invitational. National Recognition Following the first three-goal game in program history, Elvir Ibisevic was named the United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week on Aug. 29. His national player of the week honor was the first of his career and the first in program history. The NCAA also named the Omaha men s soccer team their team of the week on Aug. 31. Ibisevic Named to the TDS Team of the Week Following his seven-point performance against Virginia Tech, Elvir Ibisevic earned a spot on the Top Drawer Soccer Division I Men s Soccer Team of the Week (Aug ). The sophomore had a hat trick and an assist during Omaha s 5-1 rout of No. 17 Virginia Tech last Sunday. Ghitis, who did not allow a goal in the tournament, was named the tournament s Defensive MVP. Ibisevic scored the game-winning goal vs. Houston Baptist and took home Offensive MVP honors. Siy and Woods were integral parts of a defensive unit that allowed only four shots on goal over a two-game span. Mavericks Win Rio Grande Valley Crown Two road wins for Omaha yielded the title at the Rio Grande Valley Invitational. The Mavericks defeated Houston Baptist on Sept. 1 and took down UTRGV 1-0 on Sept. 3. Ibisevic Sets Omaha Single-Match Record Elvir Ibisevic set a school single-match record when he scored three goals against No. 17 Virginia Tech (Aug. 27). Ibisevic also set a single-game mark with seven points in the game. Previously, seven different Mavericks had scored two goals in a match, but no one had scored three. Quick Strike Elvir Ibisevic needed just over 10 minutes to find the back of the net three times in a 5-1 win against Virginia Tech. Ibisevic scored the second-fastest hat trick in DI soccer history. Night of Firsts During Omaha s match against No. 17 Virginia Tech (Aug. 27), the Mavericks set three program records. UNO totaled 17 points on five goals and seven assists. Welcome Back The Mavericks return 18 letterwinners to the program for the 2017 season, including seven starters for the 2016 Summit League regular-season champions. Of the 87 points tallied as a team last season, the Omaha offense returns 50 of those points. Offensively last season, Emmanuel Hamzat tallied 14 points on six goals and two assists. Along with Ghitis, Ugo Tritz is back for his sophomore season. Last year, Ghitis went 9-4-4, recorded six shutouts, posted a goals-against average of 1.06 and tallied 62 saves. Tritz went 1-1 with a 0.50 goals-against average. The Newcomers The Mavericks welcomed 11 newcomers in freshmen Oliver Bihuniak, Miguel Gomez, Ed Gordon, Diego Gutierrez, Connor Jokerst, Tim Kaftan, Stephen Siy and Matt Smith and transfers Brahan Gamarra, Gonzalo Ledesma and Billy Hoffmann. Mavericks Picked Second in Summit League Omaha was picked second in the 2017 Summit League Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Mavericks received one first-place vote and 21 total points for second, while last season's tournament champion Denver was the preseason league favorite with five first-place votes and 25 points overall. Western Illinois came in third with 14 points; Oral Roberts was fourth with 13 points, Fort Wayne (nine) followed in fifth and Eastern Illinois (eight) rounded it out in sixth. Preseason Honors Jacob Weiler was named to the Summit League Players to Watch List. Weiler anchored the Omaha defense last season and was a Second Team all-league honoree.

6 OMAHA MEN'S SOCCER Local Talent a Strong Influence on 2017 Roster The 2017 Mavericks will have plenty of homegrown talent on the roster as 10 players are from Nebraska. Nine of those players are from the Omaha metro area while one is from South Sioux City. It s not only the players that have Omaha ties as head coach Jason Mims spent 10 years at Creighton University as an assistant coach. Goalkeeper coach Daniel Galvis played two years at Bellevue University before moving on to coach with the Bruins and Bluejays.
