2 COMMODORE NOTES NOTES of SIGNIFICANCE Following victory at Ole Miss Here's some significant notes from the Commodores' road victory over Ole Miss last Saturday ranks. The victory was Vanderbilt's third consecutive road win against an Southeastern Conference opponent, marking the first time the Commodores have registered three straight road wins in league play. It marked Vanderbilt's first four-game win streak involving games played in November since the 1991 season. The win was Vanderbilt's fourth this year in SEC play, the most since the Commodores recorded four league wins in The Commodores rallied from a 17-point deficit in the second half (23-6) to earn the victory. It was the program's largest comeback since the Commodores overcame a 25-point deficit against Northern Illinois on 28-3) on Sept. 11, It was the Commodores' third straight win in Oxford, marking the first time Vanderbilt has accomplished three consecutive victories at Vaught- Hemingway Stadium. It is also Vanderbilt's first three-game win streak in the Ole Miss series since The last time the Commodores defeated an SEC team on three straight occasions was Kentucky from Commodore Offense, Defense PROVIDING SOLID SCORING STatISTICs The Vanderbilt defense is on pace to allow the fewest total points in nearly 40 years. Georgia, Florida and South Carolina from the SEC Eastern Division are ranked No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7, respectively, in the poll released Nov. 11. A fourth opponent, Northwestern of the Big Ten, is receiving votes in the current ballot Commodores: Several Areas of Improvement over 2011 Squad The Commodores are out-performing the 5-5 Commodores of a year ago a squad that eventually made its way to the Liberty Bowl. A comparison of current NCAA stats indicates the 2012 Commodores are improved in most offensive and defensive categories over James Franklin's initial squad in The one-game improvement this season in overall record is simply the most obvious stat that shows the 2012 team Stat Comparisons to be better than the Category 2012 Avg Avg. This year, Vanderbilt has been one of the nation's best in limiting turnovers, committing just 14 after having 21 turnovers through 10 games last year. The improved ball security has not translated to improved turnover margin because the Commodores have forced just eight turnovers this season. 2

It is the SEC's fourth most frequently played rivalry. The series is in dispute Vanderbilt recognizes a 1918 win; Tennessee does not recognize the game. Vanderbilt also controlled the early years between the universities, holding a overall record through last time vs. TENNESSEE Turnovers Costly to Vanderbilt; Lose in Overtime at Tennessee KNOXVILLE Every time Vanderbilt came close to taking control against Tennessee, the Commodores got in their own way as the Volunteers registered a victory in overtime. No Vanderbilt mistake was more damaging than an interception in overtime. Eric Gordon picked the pass off and ran 90 yards for the touchdown that gave the Volunteers the victory. The Commodores had four turnovers to just two by Tennessee. Game 11 Nov. 19, 2011 Knoxville, Tenn. The officials didn't help Vanderbilt's cause. They first ruled Gordon's knee down but overturned their call on review, ending the game. SEC Coordinator of Officials Steve Shaw said in a statement released more than two hours after the game ended that the play should not have been reviewed. Had the play not been reviewed, Tennessee would have faced first down at the 25-yard line and would have needed just a field goal to win the game. Vandy's last four losses in SEC action have come by a total of 19 points. Scoring Summary Team OT Final Record Vanderbilt , 2-6 Tennessee , 1-6 FIRST Quarter: UT: T. Poole 1-yd. run (M. 6 COMMODORE NOTES NOTES from the WIN OVER OLe MISS H The win was Vanderbilt's third straight against Ole Miss. The Commodores also have won five of the last six and six of the last eight, in the series. It also marked Vanderbilt's third consecutive victory in Oxford. H The Vanderbilt defense produced 14 tackles for loss in the victory, its highest total this season. The plays resulted in 43 lost yards for the Rebels. Earlier this season, the unit had 13 tackles for loss in a victory over UMass. The previous high this year in SEC action was 10 against Auburn. The Commodores top the conference and are tied for fourth in the NCAA with 78 tackles for loss. H The Commodores drove the length of the field to produce a game-winning touchdown in the closing 2:00 for the first time since Jay Cutler was the SEC Offensive Player of the Week as a Vanderbilt quarterback in Jordan Rodgers (R-Sr.) methodically directed the 9-play, 79-yard drive capped by a 26-yard scoring toss from Rodgers to Chris Boyd (R-So., WR) with :52 left on the clock. On the drive, Rodgers was 5-of-6 for 77 yards and converted a critical 4th & 2 with a scramble from the Vanderbilt 46-yard line. Before Rodgers' performance, Vanderbilt fans haven't witnessed a late fourth quarter touchdown drive to win a game since Cutler accomplished the feat against Tennessee, Arkansas and Wake Forest in Rodgers sets career highs with 21 completions and 36 attempts. He also enjoyed his third consecutive game with multiple TD passes. H Carey Spear (Jr., PK) continued to show excellent form as the Commodores' placekicker, converting from 22 and 44 yards. The 44-yarder came on the final play of the first half, and gave the Commodores momentum entering the locker room at intermission. Spear has been one of the SEC's most consistent kickers, making 15 of 18 field goals (83.3 percent). H After failing to convert a third down try in the first half, the Vanderbilt offense was successful on 6-of- 10 third downs in the second half. H Jordan Matthews (Jr., WR) and Boyd combined for 217 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. Matthews enjoyed game highs of nine catches and 153 receiving yards. H Vanderbilt limited Ole Miss to just 55 rushing yards, the lowest total by an SEC opponent this season. It was the fifth time this season the Commodores held an opponent under 125 rushing yards. H Chase Garnham (Jr., LB) had 2.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and seven total tackles to key the defensive attack. He leads the team with 10.5 tackles for loss and six quarterback sacks. H Wesley Tate (R-Jr., RB) and Brian Kimbrow (Fr., RB) topped the Vanderbilt rushing attack with 43 and 41 yards, respectively. H Javon Marshall (R-Jr., safety) topped the defense with eight solo tackles and 11 total tackles. Both totals represent single-game career highs for the starting safety. H Andre Hal (Jr., CB) set a career high with eight total tackles, including two resulting in lost yards for the Rebels. He also topped the defense with three pass breakups. H Kris Kentera (R-Fr., TE) posted the biggest catch of his brief career on the game-winning drive. Kentera's 21-yard reception and willingness to take a hit gave the Commodores a first down at the Ole Miss 26-yard line. On the next play, Rodgers connected with Boyd on the deciding 26-yard pass. H Rob Lohr (R-Sr., DT) played his best game of the season, registering five solo tackles, a quarterback sack and three tackles for loss. Lohr ranks as the team's active career leader with 28.5 tackles for loss and 11 quarterback sacks. H Richard Kent (R-Sr., punter) continued to be a major factor influencing field possession with his superb punting display. Despite averaging only 41.6 yards on eight punts, Kent pinned Ole Miss inside its own 20-yard line on four different possessions. Mostly due to Kent's effectiveness, the average start of Rebels' last six possessions came at the Ole Miss 18-yard line. H Warren Norman (R-Jr., RB/RS) had a 20-yard kick return in the second quarter, his first for the Commodores in more than two years. He is the team's active career leader with 1,628 kick return yards. COMMODORES SCORe IN ALL THREE PHASES vs. UMASS Vanderbilt experienced a rare achievement against Massachusetts on Oct. 27 by scoring touchdowns in all three phases of the game. In addition to five offensive touchdowns in the 49-7 victory over the Minutemen, the Commodores scored on an 17-yard interception return by Trey Wilson (Sr., CB) and a 40-yard punt return by Jonathan Krause (Jr., WR). Prep Teammates facing Each OTher Several Commodores will face prep teammates when Vanderbilt and Tennessee play Saturday. Jordan Rodgers (R-Sr., QB) and Tennessee's Darin Gooch played together at Butte (Calif.) Junior College. Kenny Ladler (Jr., safety) and Darreon Herring (Fr., LB) played at Stephenson (Ga.) 15 COMMODORE NOTES The Vanderbilt football program and athletics department has undergone several upgrades and renovations since last fall. Here's a look at some of new and improved areas on West End. Look Good, Play Good Head Coach James Franklin and the senior members of the football team unveiled the team's 2012 uniforms during a pep-rally style event at the Barnes & Noble Vanderbilt Bookstore on July 11. The stylish uniforms, designed by the Vanderbilt football staff, are made with Nike's high-tenacity Cordura knit fabric and feature black, gold and white jerseys and pants. The final piece of equipment that was shown to the crowd was a white helmet. Last season, Vanderbilt debuted a black helmet that the team wore in addition to their gold helmet. The Commodores can mix-and-match any combination of the black, gold and white elements (helmet, jersey and pants), creating 27 possible combinations. Several key changes are incorporated in the 2012 design: For the first time since 1994,"Vanderbilt" will be displayed on the front of Commodore jerseys. The name will be in all caps above jersey numbers. A gold "anchor" emblem adorns the homeplate or front "V" neck of all jerseys. Last year, the Star V logo was stitched there. "Anchor Down" text is stitched in the interior of each jersey neckline. Nike's iconic "flywire" stitching is incorporated into the high impact shoulder area of each jersey. The gold jersey top features black shoulder coverings, black lettering and black numbers. Last year, the gold jersey had white numbers. All jerseys have an updated circular SEC patch stitched over the right breast. The Nike swoosh is over the left breast. Star V logos will adorn each hip of the pants. In 2011, a lone Star V logo Vanderbilt's three helmets was located on the left front of the uniform pant. Stadium, Program Updates Several upgrades have been put in to place prior to the start of the 2012 season at Vanderbilt Stadium. The most noticeable is the new video board in the north end zone of the stadium. The high definition board measures 40 x 71 feet and is one of the largest video boards in college football. In front of the video board is a new grass berm for fan seating. The berm can accommodate approximately 400 fans and provide one of the most unique seats in the country. The field itself has a new look and feel, as the old grass playing field has been replaced with a synthetic turf called Legion 46. Installed by Shaw Sportexe, the field has several new features. The redzone features the phrase "Anchor Down," an anchor logo has replaced the traditional X that marks the kickoff location and the end zones are painted black with "Vanderbilt" and "Commodores" framed by the Star-V logo. The Star-V logo remains at midfield, with Southeastern Conference logos on the 25-yard lines. In addition, new lighting has been installed at Vanderbilt Stadium. While they aren't as noticeable until nightfall, they will improve television viewing drastically while focusing more light on the field (and less in the stands), creating a more dramatic stage for Commodore football. Across Jess Neely Drive, football was one of several Vanderbilt programs to benefit from renovations and additions at the McGugin Center. New meeting rooms and a 140-seat auditorium-style classroom all adjacent to the coaches offices will benefit football, while meeting rooms have also been added to McGugin for Vanderbilt's Olympic sports. H Zac Stacy (Sr., RB) was named second team running back by both the coaches and writers that cover the league. Stacy set several school records as a junior, including the single-season rushing record at 1,193 yards. Stacy added 14 rushing touchdowns and eclipsed 100 yards in five games, including a stellar 198-yard performance against Army and a 135-yard, two-touchdown performance against Kentucky that earned him SEC Player of the Week honors. UPDATE: Stacy has 769 rushing yards on the season, ranking seventh in the SEC. This year, Stacy has become the team's all-time leader in rushing yards (2,771 yards) and rushing touchdowns (26). H Trey Wilson (Sr., CB) was named third team defensive back by the writers after making 30 tackles, three interceptions and 11 pass breakups in He became the first Vanderbilt player since 1974 to return to interceptions for touchdowns in the same season, returning picks against Ole Miss and Elon. He also had another pick against the Rebels and earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance. UPDATE: Wilson has two interception returns for touchdowns this year and ranks second all-time in SEC with four interception return touchdowns. H Rob Lohr (R-Sr., DT) received third-team defensive honors. He has started 28 consecutive games for the Commodores. In 2011, he was second on the team with five sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss. Four members of the class Caleb Azubike, Darreon Herring, Brian Kimbrow and Jake Sealand have played this season. The 2012 signing class represents the first in school history where every recruit in the class was rated three stars or better, while the group also includes four four-star players. Those four four-star players are the most recruits of that caliber to ever be in one class at Vanderbilt. In fact, Vanderbilt had signed just three four-star players in the decade prior. Of the 22 signees, 15 are nationally ranked at their position. Vanderbilt was especially successful in its home state of Tennessee, where all six recruits who are staying in their native state to become Commodores were among the top-25 players in Tennessee. 26 2012 game recaps South Carolina earns comeback victory in season opener NASHVILLE Ninth-ranked South Carolina and coach Steve Spurrier got a big scare to open the season. Marcus Lattimore and Connor Shaw helped the Gamecocks grind their way through past scrappy Vanderbilt. Lattimore ran for two touchdowns and 110 yards in his first game back after tearing his left ACL, and Shaw ran for 92 yards while playing the second half with an injured shoulder as No. 9 South Carolina rallied for a victory against Vanderbilt on Thursday Game 1 Aug. 30, 2012 Nashville night. "Maybe it's good for us...," Spurrier said. "You look at the preseason press we thought we were hot stuff. Then we almost got that stuff beat out of us." But Shaw bruised his right, throwing shoulder late in the first half and missed the first two series of the third quarter before returning. The junior drove the Gamecocks for the go-ahead touchdown and ran 12 yards to the Vandy 1 before rolling in pain in the end zone. Lattimore scored the go-ahead TD on a 1-yard run with 11:25 to go. (AP) - Venric Mark ran for 123 yards and a late touchdown, Tyler Scott forced a key fumble and Northwestern beat Vanderbilt Saturday night. Northwestern (2-0) didn't score a touchdown in the first three quarters but managed 17 points in the fourth to come away with another dramatic win after beating Syracuse in the opener. The Wildcats finally found the end zone when Game 2 Sept. 8, 2012 Evanston, Ill. Mark ran it in from the 7 to give Northwestern a short-lived lead with 9:28 left in the game. Vanderbilt's Zac Stacy then turned a short swing pass into a 55-yard gain that put the ball on the 14, but instead of a touchdown, the Commodores (0-2) had to settle for a tying 26-yard field goal by Carey Spear. Northwestern caught a break on the next drive when Trevor Siemian's 34-yard pass to Rashad Lawrence along the left sideline was ruled an completion even though he fumbled the ball as he went out of bounds. Jeff Budzien kicked an 18-yarder with 2:01 remaining to break the tie.
