This is UK s highest seed since 1983 and its first No. 4 seed in NCAA tournament history. The best finish for UK came in the very first NCAA Tournament in 1982 when the Wildcats fell one win shy of the Final Four, losing to eventual national champion Louisiana Tech. Since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985, the Wildcats haven t advanced past the second round. Kentucky was one of six SEC teams to be awarded a bid to the NCAA Tournament. SEC regular-season and tournament champion Tennessee earned the No. 1 seed in the Memphis Regional, while Georgia, LSU, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt all made the tournament field. This is Matthew Mitchell s first appearance as a head coach in the NCAA Tournament, however, he is no stranger to the Big Dance. Mitchell appeared in the NCAA Final Four when he was a graduate assistant with Tennessee in and also advanced to two NCAA Tournaments as an assistant coach at Florida (2001 and 2002). Only one member of the UK has competed in an NCAA Tournament. Sophomore transfer Rebecca Gray played in four games at North Carolina during her freshman season, helping the Tar Heels advance to the Elite Eight. The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider things like margin of victory, only whether or not a team won and where the game was played. It is used by the NCAA as one of its factors in deciding which teams to invite to the NCAA Tournament and where to seed them. The basic formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents opponents average winning percentage (OOWP). LACK OF HEIGHT NOT HURTING WILDCATS One of the biggest concerns entering this season was UK s lack of height. Only one player with significant minutes stands over 6-0 and that s junior forward Victoria Dunlap at 6-1. Despite the height disadvantage, the Wildcats holds a +0.3 rebounding margin overall. The Cats are 17-0 overall this season when tying or out-rebounding their opponent compared to a 9-7 mark when getting out-rebounded. The three losing tools are excuses, laziness and complaints. Mitchell implemented a Winning Tools Ticket Program for all youth organizations with membership for any student in the eighth grade and under. The program provides an opportunity for youth in Lexington, Central Kentucky, and throughout the Commonwealth to attend home games and experience Kentucky women's basketball. Coach Mitchell began implementing the 21 Days to Form a Habit theory on Nov. 1. The theory by Dr. Maxwell Maltz, a plastic surgeon with New York Hospitals, shows that brain circuits will take "engrams" (memory traces), and produce neuropathways only if they are bombarded for 21 days in a row. The Cats began working on defensive fundamentals on Nov. 1 and 21 days later were forcing 21.8 turnovers per game. A month later, the Cats had increased their defensive pressure and were forcing 25.6 turnovers, including a then-school-record high of 38 miscues by Louisville. The fun factor Coach Mitchell has infused his fun-loving and entergetic personality into the Wildcat program. He has made scouting reports fun by turning them into a trivia game, complete with prizes and fun facts about staff members, opposing schools, etc. He also opens and closes each practice with fun shots and/or a fun competition which requires the losing team to moon walk or power walk up and down the court. game this past season. I try to get to all of their games because I just like the way they play defense. They are just all over the opponent their opponent every play of the game, it s crazy. I think they probably have the best chance against UConn of any team to be honest. Our girls are very good and deserve a lot more attention than they re getting. They re really good. DYNAMIC DEBUT Freshman guard A dia Mathies gained statewide notoriety as Kentucky s top high school basketball player last year as she was named the 2009 Kentucky Miss Basketball. In her debut season, the versatile guard has proven why she was awarded the top honor and also why she was named UK s first SEC Freshman of the Year. Mathies has scored in double figures in 25 of 33 games, including six games with 20 or more points. She also has pulled down at least four rebounds in 26 of 33 contests, including a career high-tying eight boards vs. LSU. Mathies currently plays a team-high 31.8 minutes per game and ranks second on the team in scoring (13.7) and steals per game (2.5). MATHIES SETS UK FROSH STEALS RECORD With 82 steals this season, A dia Mathies has set a new freshman record at UK, besting Stacey Reed s mark of 69 steals during her rookie season in Mathies, who also ranks sixth on UK s top 10 list for steals in a single season, currently ranks among UK s all-time freshman leaders in 10 other categories. The 54-point margin of victory over Miami was the highest since defeating Tennessee State by 60 points (105-45) on Dec. 22, THE MAGIC 80 The Wildcats hold a remarkable (.932) record since 1974 when scoring 80 points or more. The last loss came against Minnesota (11/23/07) when the Cats fell in the Rainbow Wahine Classic. UK is 16-1 (.941) under Coach Mitchell when scoring 80 points or more. UK is 11-0 this season when exceeding the 80-point mark. KENTUCKY ALL-TIME The Cats are (.569) in 36 years of varsity women s basketball. The Cats are overall in close games under Coach Mitchell. DO-IT-ALL DUNLAP Junior All-SEC forward Victoria Dunlap is establishing herself as one of the most all-around players in school history. Despite not being the tallest player on the court, Dunlap s defensive presence is well known as she often guards the opponent s best player. However, the rest of her game also has improved as she currently ranks in the league s top-10 in seven statistical categories, including steals (1st - 3.2), scoring (3rd ), rebounding (4th - 8.3), field goal percentage (7th -.487), blocks (4th - 2.0), offensive rebounds (1st - 3.4) and defensive rebounds (5th - 4.9).

24 Kentucky head coach Matthew Mitchell s teams are known for using three winning tools for success: honesty, hard work and discipline. So it s no surprise that in just three seasons, he has used these tools to build a program that is quickly ascending back into the national spotlight. In his first two seasons, the Wildcats advanced a back-to-back postseason tournaments, defeated four nationally-ranked teams, including upsets over perennial powers Georgia and Tennessee, had six players receive All-SEC accolades, had five SEC Academic Honor Roll members, one SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year, and all six players in their final season of eligibility received their degree. Year Three has proven to be the best yet as Mitchell was named SEC Coach of the Year for his remarkable job in turning around a team that went overall, 5-9 in conference play last season to a 26-7 overall record and its first NCAA Tournament berth since The Cats' 26 overall wins and the 11 SEC wins are both school records. Playing the 14th-toughest schedule in the nation, including meeting NCAA Champion Tennessee twice and Final Four participant LSU three times, Mitchell led the Wildcats to a school-record fourth consecutive postseason tournament in just his first season. UK posted a overall record, the Cats fourth consecutive winning season, and finished fourth in the ever-tough Southeastern Conference race with an 8-6 mark, just one win shy of the school record. The eight league wins were the most conference wins by a first-year head coach in UK Hoops history.
