The Boilermakers knocked off No.1-ranked Arizona 72-69, in the inaugural contest and then were defeated by Stanford last year. The win against Arizona in 2001 was the first time Purdue knocked off the country s top-ranked team since the Old Gold and Black downed Michigan State on Jan. 13, 1979, in Mackey Arena. Opponent Outcome Score Date Arizona W /25/00 Stanford L /24/01 Purdue s John Wooden A native of Martinsville, Ind., John Wooden helped lead Purdue to three Big Ten championships in 1930, '31 and '32. Also a three-time All-American who was named the national player of the year in 1932, Wooden led the Boilermakers to a 17-1 record and the mythical national championship as a senior. Although there wasn't an NCAA Tournament or national rankings to determine a national champion at the time, several sportswriters from around the country labeled Purdue as "The Best Team in the Land." Wooden would go on to coach UCLA to a record 10 national championships and 12 appearances in the Final Four - both records for a collegiate coach. In Wooden s three seasons with the Boilermakers he averaged 9.9 points per game, including an astounding 12.2 his senior season. Purdue in Conseco Fieldhouse Purdue has played six times in Conseco Fieldhouse and holds a 2-4 record. The Boilermakers knocked off No. 1 Arizona on Nov. 25, 2000, in the first Wooden Tradition held in Conseco Fieldhouse. Purdue is 1-1 against ranked opponents in the Fieldhouse. The Boilermakers have lost their last three games in the Fieldhouse, all in the season. Teague helped guide Pike to the 2001 state championship in class 4A, and Kiefer s Mater Dei High School fell in the state championship game of class 3A. The Last Time Out The Boilermakers kicked off the campaign with a win over Miami (Ohio), marking the team s 19th season-opening victory in 23 tries under coach Gene Keady. Purdue held Miami to just 18 points in the first half, the lowest output by a Boilermaker opponent since Michigan scored only 17 on Feb. 13, The RedHawks missed their final 13 shots going into the break, but cut the point margin to 10 at six minutes into the second half. The Boilermakers then went on a run to put the game out of reach. I was really happy with the urgency and intensity we played with tonight, Keady said. I liked the way the kids moved the ball up the court, the way they came off the bench strong and how well the team rebounded. The Boilermaker bench dropped in 30 points, as the team shot 51.0 percent for the game. Five Purdue players reached double figures, led by Kenneth Lowe, who posted 12 points. Willie Deane tallied 11 points, marking his ninth-straight double-figure game. Purdue outrebounded Miami 40-23, while limiting the RedHawks to just 34 percent from the field. Juby Johnson led Miami with 17 points in the losing effort. The Lowe Down On Kenneth A familiar face returned to the floor in the Boilermakers opening game against Miami (Ohio) on Nov. 22. Junior Kenneth Lowe sat out last season after having his right shoulder operated on in the summer of 2001 to repair an old high school injury. As a sophomore, Lowe appeared in all 32 games for the Boilermakers and started 31 of them. He led the team in free throws made (135) and percentage (.865) and averaged 11.3 points per game. Lowe scored in double figures in 21 of 32 games and was second on the team in steals with 33. Lowe is the Boilermakers best defender and has a knack for getting to the free throw line. Against the RedHawks, Lowe scored a teamhigh 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting and equaled a team high with six rebounds. He led the Boilermakers in minutes played with 30.

In addition, Deane was named preseason first team All-Big Ten by Street & Smith and Basketball News. Deane has posted double figures in 45 games and has 11 games with more than 20 points. New Faces Three freshmen look to make a productive impact in their first season with the Boilermakers. Indianapolis native David Teague should be the first or second guard off the bench and see considerable playing time. He possesses a great outside shot with a quick release and is a tenacious defender. After a prep career at Pike High School, Teague attended Bridgton Academy Prep. Chicago native Melvin Buckley is an athletic, tall guard/forward, who has the ability to play inside and outside. Power forward Matt Kiefer reminds many Boilermaker fans of former Purdue center and current Indiana Pacers forward Brad Miller. The Evansville, Ind., native is an athletic post player who can handle the ball and score either facing or with his back to the basket. (Country Day) Class Of Gene Keady announced the signing of two players to National Letters of Intent on Nov 15. The Boilermaker class includes guard/forward Adam Liddell from DeKalb High School in Dekalb, Ind., and forward Ije Nwanko (pronounced EE-jay Nuh-WAN-uh-ko) from Country Day School in Detroit. Keady feels the duo will fit well with the Boilermakers plans. I like both of these guys because they come from winning high school programs, said Keady. They are two class individuals, who we feel will fit in well with what we are trying to accomplish. We really got these two committed early, which is nice when you have small classes because then you can work on future classes a little sooner. Adam Liddell Liddell averaged 11.2 points and 53.8 percent shooting per game as a junior at DeKalb. Additionally, he posted 6.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.0 steals and 2.5 blocks. The Barons went 22-2 last season and fell one game short of a trip to the state finals. Adam is a very versatile player, said Keady. He has the ability to post up, play the wing and shoot the three. He plays tennis and is pretty good, so his footwork is one of his strengths. We ve talked with him about working on his strength and trying to bulk up a little bit. Ije Nwanko Nwanko averaged 16.9 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 5.3 blocks per game while connecting on 62 percent of his shots from the floor as a junior. Projected as a power forward, Nwanko s wingspan is measured at 7-foot-4. Other players to come from Detroit Country Day School include Duke s Shane Battier and Michigan s Chris Webber. Ije is an unusual player in that he is only 6- foot-7, but will probably play down low for us, said Keady. For his size he has great athleticism, and he possesses good strength. He s the kind of kid who likes the physical play that is involved in the post. Sporting News Top JUCO s... Purdue s European Vacation Purdue traveled to Europe from May 9 to 20. The Boilermakers departed from Chicago and spent three nights each in London, England, and Paris, France, and concluded the trip with a four-night stay in Brussels, Belgium. The Old Gold and Black played eight games against club teams throughout the three cities. The team had three days off for travel between cities and sightseeing. The Boilermakers concluded the trip 6-2 and won their final four games. This was the fifth trip overseas for the Purdue men s basketball program. In 1983, the Boilermakers visited Belgium and Holland. In 1987, they traveled to Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti. In 1993 and 1997, they visited Belgium, England and France. The Boilermakers have compiled a 34-8 record during their five trips overseas, including a 14-2 mark during their last two trips. In preparation for the trip, the Boilermakers were allowed 10 practice sessions. Quoting Coach Keady On being a part of the John Wooden Tradition... If you re a Purdue person, it s always been an honor to be a part of something with John Wooden s name attached to it. The biggest thing about those games is they re like NCAA Tournament games, since they are played on a neutral court. I don t see any reason why we wouldn t be a part of this for years to come. If I had my way, however, the event would be played at Mackey Arena because the Purdue campus is where John Wooden initially made his name in college basketball. On Louisville... They are a very athletic team, and they run their usual full-court pressure. Reece Gaines is a very prominent scorer in the nation. Miles is perhaps the best rebounder in the nation right now. They just have good athletes, and they play 11 people. They keep pressuring the ball and getting after you, and that s the way we like to play. We don t extend our defense necessarily as much as they do, but it should be good for us to have to break a press. On the Purdue program needing wins against national-caliber teams... What we would like to see happen (against Louisville) is for the game to be tied with 30 seconds left and us with the ball. Then we would have it back to the way it used to be when we are competing against great programs with a chance to win. Then we have to learn how to win that game. If we do, we ve made progress. If we get beat by 20 to 25 points, it s back to the drawing board. I think too much has been made of last year, however. Last year was a shock because it sneaked up on us. One bad year and everyone is trying to dwell on it, while we are trying to forget it. We need to win every game we play. We want to do that and to play hard. We have been doing it in practice and we looked fairly good in the Miami game. On the play of the newcomers... They re not afraid to miss a shot, and I like that. I yell at guys a lot, and they think that means don t shoot. That means take a shot within the course of our offense so we have good rebounding balance and good defensive balance. Take a shot you can make and play to your strengths and then move on. If you miss it, so be it. Make the next shot. The new guys have that same attitude. The three guys that sat out last year and the four new guys have been a nice fit for those that went to Europe.

16 Game 2 - Louisville Cardinals Page 16 GAME #1 vs. Miami (Ohio) PURDUE 73 Miami (Ohio) 46 Nov. 22, 2002 West Lafayette, Ind. Mackey Arena The Boilermakers kicked off the campaign with a win over Miami (Ohio), marking the team s 19th season-opening victory in 23 tries under coach Gene Keady.
