Gene Keady Head Coach 23rd Season PURDUE BOILERMAKER BASKETBALL
6 A Busy Off-season For the first time in his 23 seasons at Purdue, coach Gene Keady used a word that no one associated with the Purdue men s basketball program had heard before: rebuilding. That process, according to Keady, begins with two things that were lacking during the season defense and mental toughness. The Boilermakers finished 10th in the Big Ten in scoring and percentage defense a year ago. The Old Gold and Black struggled on the road and squandered numerous second-half leads. The main areas as far as we are concerned are defense, playing hard and competing, says Keady. We need to have everyone communicating on the floor so we can get all those things accomplished. Our defense last season was not near the level it should have been or has been in the past, and that is a huge concern for us. Just one month after the season ended with a first-round Big Ten Tournament loss to Iowa, the Boilermakers went to work correcting what went wrong. I told the team after the Iowa loss to take two weeks off from basketball and focus on your work in the classroom, and then think about what happened last season, said Keady. I told them that when they came back to begin working out again, that defense and attitude were our top two priorities. When the players returned, they began a rigorous training program that included morning conditioning drills, individual workouts and time in the weight room. We re hoping that getting right back at it was very beneficial, said Keady. We did some great stationary work, and I thought everyone s attitude was great throughout the spring. The goal of the workout sessions was better technique on defense, and for the players to understand the importance of working hard every possession of every practice. European Vacation The Boilermakers utilized what they took from workouts and applied it on the floor in Europe on the team s 11-day trip overseas. Purdue was gone from May 9 to 21, visiting England, France and Belgium. The Boilermakers went 6-2 on the trip and saw their defense improve in each game. I think the first two games in Europe we did a good job of working hard in those areas, said Keady. In the next two games, I think we went back to some of our old habits from last year a bit. We had a talk after the fourth game, and it seemed to really sink in with them because I thought our last four games of the trip were really good. They came back really focused on the areas we wanted to see improvement in. Senior guard Willie Deane, who was named to the All-Big Ten second team, led the team in scoring over the eight games, averaging 24.5 points. He also collected 12 steals and was 28 of 31 (.903) from the free throw line. In the Boilermakers seventh game, Deane hit a running shot in the lane to put Purdue up by five with under 30 seconds remaining. Senior Darmetreis Kilgore averaged 15.9 points per game and made improvement on the defensive end of the floor. Juniors Kenneth Lowe and Brett Buscher both averaged in double figures in scoring, and were the most consistent defenders on the floor. The main areas as far as we are concerned are defense, playing hard and competing, said Keady. Our defense last season was not near the level it should have been or has been at in the past, and that is a huge concern for us. Along with Buscher, sophomore Matt Carroll controlled the glass, racking up a team-high 65 rebounds to go along with 9.9 points per game. The point guard duo of junior Austin Parkinson and sophomore Brandon McKnight combined for 85 assists and merely 20 turnovers in the eight games. McKnight averaged 7.6 points and collected 28 rebounds, while Parkinson averaged 3.0 points and had a team-high 22 steals. I thought the trip to Europe was great because everyone had a chance to work on their weaknesses, said Keady. We had a chance to get our team chemistry improved and do things together as a team both on and off the court. A Changed Roster When practice for the season began, eight new players were eligible for the season opener. Over half the squad you can say will be new, but we really only have five guys that don t know the system, said Keady. Kenneth Lowe, Ivan Kartelo and Brandon McKnight all have been here and practiced before, so they know what we expect, and they know the system really well. Lowe will return to the lineup after missing last season due to shoulder surgery. Lowe started 31 games his sophomore season and scored in double figures 21 times. McKnight will help bolster the defensive effort in the backcourt and give the Boilermakers two legitimate point guards. Kartelo sat out the season after transferring from Notre Dame. In two years with the Irish, Kartelo saw action in 53 games, including 37 as a freshman. Four freshmen and one junior are newcomers for the Boilermakers. Chris Booker played at Tyler Junior College the last two seasons and should make an immediate impact in the post. Freshman post player Matt Kiefer had a busy summer of his own. The 6-foot-10 forward was a member of the Indiana All-Star team. Freshmen Melvin Buckley and David Teague enter the mix as athletic slashers who can get to the basket and 6 PURDUE BOILERMAKER BASKETBALL
7 score from outside. Teague spent last season at Bridgton Academy Prep School in Maine, and Buckley was a standout for Thornwood High School in South Holland, Ill. Freshman guard Chris Hartley will join the Boilermakers in the fall and add depth to the backcourt as a walkon. Of our four new guys, two of them have to come through and contribute, said Keady. I m anticipating two of the four really helping us and giving us some major contributions. With more individuals on the roster, Keady doesn t anticipate any problems sorting out lineups. When you have a large roster with talent all the way across, it creates a very competitive situation, said Keady. That makes it easy for the coaches because the guys are always giving effort to get more playing time and contribute more to the team. The Leadership Issue After the graduation of seniors John Allison, Maynard Lewis, Joe Marshall and Rodney Smith, the Boilermakers will be in need of leadership on and off the court. We hope that we have enough leadership back and enough guys who have been through the wars that some of the leadership issues will be worked out, said Keady. I think the lack of success over the last two seasons will be a great motivation for these guys to come out ready to play hard and be on the same page with each other. Lowe has shown a willingness in the past to lead by example and encourage others. His presence on the defensive end of the floor will set the tone for intensity, which was lacking a season ago. At The Point Perhaps the most contested position on the team is that of starting point guard. Parkinson and McKnight bring different strengths to the position. Parkinson started 21 games last season The Senior Scoring Duo Seniors Willie Deane and Darmetries Kilgore were the top two scorers for the Boilermakers during the season. The duo combined to score 37.3 percent of the team s points. They were in double-figure scoring in a combined 44 games Team Rank Big Ten Rank Points Per Game In Scoring In Scoring* Willie Deane st 1st Darmetreis Kilgore 9.9 2nd 30th * Indicates scoring in overall games and is an excellent passer. He ranked second in the Big Ten in assists per game (4.83) and led the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.55) in overall games. McKnight is one of the Boilermakers best on-ball defenders and can get to the basket to either score or find the open man. McKnight possesses great quickness and can push the ball up the floor on fast-break opportunities. Right now I think it s a toss-up at point guard, said Keady. Austin has the experience, but Brandon can score more and is a lot quicker. Both played excellent in Europe and had great assistto-turnover ratios. I would like to think that they can complement each other in a tandem fashion and give us a couple options at that position. The Perimeter Headlining the perimeter attack is Deane, the Big Ten s returning leading scorer in overall games. Deane was the main offensive weapon for the Boilermakers a year ago, averaging 17.3 points per game, leading the team in scoring in 17 games and scoring over 20 points in 10 contests. Deane has proven he wants the ball in his hands in crucial situations. Against Southwest Missouri State, Deane hit a game-winning shot with 2.1 seconds remaining and scored a career-high 31 points. I think Willie is our guy to go to if we need a bucket, or if the pressure is on and we need someone to step up, said Keady. Kilgore gives Purdue another scoring option along the threepoint line. As a junior, Kilgore connected on 50-of-133 three-point attempts and averaged 9.9 points per game. At 6-foot-5, Kilgore has the ability to take the ball to the basket and help on the glass. Lowe returns to the floor after missing last season with a shoulder injury. Lowe is the Boilermakers best on-ball defender and communicator on the defensive end of the floor. He also adds a scoring punch, with an ability to shoot from the perimeter or draw fouls by taking the ball to the basket. As a sophomore, Lowe started in 31 games, averaged 11.3 points per game and attempted a team-high 156 free throws. Sophomore Andrew Ford and freshman Chris Hartley are both walkons who will add depth to the team. Ford saw action in 11 games last season and has the ability to knock down the threepoint shot. Hartley hails from Noblesville, Ind. Teague comes to West Lafayette after spending the last year at Bridgton Academy prep school in Maine. An Indianapolis native, Teague is a tremendous scoring threat from the outside and at 6-foot-5 can get to the basket. He will be joined by Buckley, who will spend time on the wing as well as in the post. Buckley is a 6-foot-7 swing player who can take smaller players on the block and draw taller players towards the perimeter. I like the guys we have on the perimeter, said Keady. The key with our success will be how well we defend the outside. Defense begins there, and if we can have our guards and PURDUE BOILERMAKER BASKETBALL
8 We hope that we have enough leadership back and enough guys who have been through the wars that some of the leadership issues will be worked out, said Keady. I think the lack of success over the last two seasons will be a great motivation for these guys to come out ready to play hard and be on the same page with each other. forwards jumping in passing lanes and putting pressure on the ball, we have a chance to be a very good defensive ball club. I think this group is extremely quick and athletic, and the trick will be to get everyone to use those abilities within the system. In The Paint For the first time in several years, the Boilermakers have depth in the post. Purdue will have six players 6-foot-8 or taller and four players who are at least 6-foot-10. This will be one of the taller teams we ve ever had here, said Keady. We have guys who possess a good combination of size, athletic ability and strength. Even our wing players are a bit taller than in the past. After sitting out a year due to the NCAA transfer rule, Kartelo should challenge for the starting job in the middle. The 6-foot-11 Notre Dame transfer represented Purdue on the Big Ten tour team in August, which will be coached by Illinois Bill Self. Kartelo possesses great size and is an exceptional passer out of the post. Junior Kevin Garrity gives the Boilermakers a valuable post presence with the ability to play center or power forward. Buscher and Carroll are the two most versatile inside players. Buscher played in 29 games a year ago and has the ability to crash the boards and knock down the 15-foot jumper. Carroll, who made tremendous strides during the European trip, is the quickest of the post players and has a knack for getting offensive rebounds. As a freshman, Carroll averaged 9.3 minutes a game in 30 outings. Booker joins Purdue after spending the last two seasons at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas. The 6-foot-10 Booker possesses great size in the post and can score both facing and with his back to the basket. Junior Kenneth Lowe will return to the lineup after missing last season due to shoulder surgery. Lowe started 31 games his sophomore season, scoring in double figures 21 times Kiefer adds versatility to the post with an ability to run the floor and handle the ball. A member of the Indiana All-Star team, Kiefer has a wealth of experience for a freshman. The influx of height and size should help the Boilermakers erase a 1.7 rebound-per-game deficit on the boards from a year ago. Other than defense and rebounding, the post players will be required to perform in other ways as well. Our big guys have to be versatile and run the floor, said Keady. They obviously have to get rebounds and play defense, but I want them to play well in the offense, and that means being able to pass out of the post and score around the basket. The Starters Several new players and a pool of talent leave the starting lineup uncertain for Keady and his staff. The best part about having a large talentfilled roster is that if guys don t play defense and work hard and compete, then we can turn to someone else and let them get minutes, said Keady. I feel comfortable with our roster and feel like the guys who work the hardest will get rewarded with the most minutes. 8 PURDUE BOILERMAKER BASKETBALL
