Keady, who is currently serving as president of NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches), surpassed an important milestone in his career on Jan. 20 against Northwestern when he earned the 800th victory of his 38-year coaching career. Including seven years at the high school level, eight years at a junior college, four stints as USA Basketball head coach and now 23 seasons as an NCAA Division I head coach, Keady has a current career record of (.714). He has completed 21 seasons as head coach of the Boilermakers, posting a (.690) record, including a (.649) conference record. He is Purdue s all-time winningest coach and the second-winningest coach in Big Ten history. He leads in wins among active Big Ten coaches. Among the milestones his Purdue teams have reached over the years are six Big Ten championships and 16 NCAA appearances, which include two trips to the Elite Eight and five trips to the Sweet Sixteen. As far as individual honors, Keady has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year a league-record seven times, and National Coach of the Year six times. He also helped lead the USA basketball team to a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia. Keady now owns an NCAA Division I coaching record of (.687). ABOUT THE BOILERMAKERS Purdue s basketball fortunes were like a rollercoaster for the season. While winning 10 of 11 games in December and early January, the Boilermakers looked like a team that could challenge for the Big Ten championship. Then a couple of broken bones in the right feet of the team s two best big men, John Allison and Rodney Smith, sent the Boilermakers into a tailspin. They lost seven of their last eight Big Ten games but managed to hold on to a winning record. The injured players returned and helped the team split a pair of games in the Big Ten Tournament and earn a bid to the NIT for the seventh time in school history. Purdue was awarded three consecutive home games in the NIT, winning its first two, over Illinois State and over Auburn, but losing in double overtime to Alabama in the quarterfinals. Squad leadership was provided by lone senior Carson Cunningham along with juniors Allison, Smith, Joe Marshall, Maynard Lewis and Travis Best. Cunningham and Smith handled the duties since fall. Allison became a captain in January, while Marshall, Lewis and Best joined the ranks in February. Cunningham started all but one game the last two seasons at point guard and averaged 14.7 points per game after the injuries to the two big men. Smith stepped up as the offensive leader, averaging 14.8 points per game prior to his injury and finishing at 13.9 for the season. Allison led the team in rebounding at 5.3 per game and blocked shots at 2.7 per game. Marshall, Lewis and Best had a total of 82 games and 24 starts between them this season.

He posted his second career double-double against Santa Clara, and followed that with a career-high 13 assists against Florida International. It marked the first time in his career he posted backto-back double-digit assist totals. He has led the team in assists 16 times this season. Carson took on more of a scoring role during the loss of Rodney Smith and John Allison, leading the Boilers with 14 points against Wisconsin, 25 points against Illinois, 17 points against Ohio State, 19 points (all in the second half) in the second game with Iowa, 17 points at Michigan and 17 against Indiana. Including his freshman year at Oregon State, Cunningham played in 123 collegiate games, starting 101 of them. He has been selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) for the Verizon Academic All-District V Men s Basketball Team and Third Team Academic All- American for the second straight year. LEWIS UPDATE: Junior Maynard Lewis saved his best basketball for the 2001 postseason. He was Purdue s leading scorer in three of the five tournament games, averaging 15.8 points and shooting 60.5 percent from the floor (including 56.3 percent on three-pointers, making 18 of 32 attempts) and 75 percent on free throws. Lewis registered his career high in the NIT opener with 26 points, hitting 7-of-8 three pointers, against Illinois State after getting 22 points against Minnesota a week earlier in the Big Ten Tournament. During Purdue s December and early January run of 10 wins in 11 games, Lewis was a model of consistency, scoring in double figures in eight of the 11 games. However, in the next three games, Lewis offense fell somewhat silent as he scored just five total points while the Boilermakers dropped two of the three games. He started only three of the final 11 Big Ten games while his shooting slump continued. SMITH UPDATE: Despite his injury, junior Rodney Smith was chosen second team All-District by the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches). He played a pivotal role on both sides of the ball for the Boilermakers this past season before breaking a bone in this right foot. Smith missed six complete games and returned to action in the Big Ten Tournament with 11 points in 10 minutes of action against Minnesota and improved to 15 points in 20 minutes in the NIT game versus Auburn. He scored in double figures in 17 of his 26 games this season and led the team in scoring eight times. Smith led the team in scoring (13.9 ppg) and was 14th among players in the Big Ten. He was also second on the team with 124 rebounds. Smith led all scorers with 20 points in Purdue s win over Arizona, despite fouling out, and was named tournament MVP for the Boilermaker Invitational. He produced a career-high 27 points against UCLA, while hitting 3-for-5 from three-point range and blocking three shots. Smith also had 27 in the second game with NU. LOWE UPDATE: Sophomore Kenneth Lowe made a major impact on this year s team. After averaging just 5.7 minutes and 1.8 points per game last year, he started all but one game this year, averaging 26.5 minutes and 11.3 points. Lowe was among the Boilermakers best shooters, hitting 47.9 percent from the floor, 40.7 percent on three pointers and 86.5 percent from the free throw line. Lowe also rated high at the defensive end of the floor, usually covering the opponents best scorers. MARSHALL UPDATE: Junior Joe Marshall was a pleasant addition in his first year after transferring from Mississippi State. In the Big Ten Tourney, Marshall came off the bench to score 13 points in each of Purdue s games against Minnesota and Illinois. At Michigan, he came off the bench to hit three threes and 8-for-8 on free throws for 17 points and he followed that up with 12 points off the bench against Indiana. At Minnesota, Marshall came off the bench to lead his team in scoring with 13 points, all in the second half. Marshall played a key role in clinching the Boilermakers win over Arizona as he came off the bench to replace Rodney Smith, after Smith fouled out, and finished with 16 points, including 7-for-9 from the floor. Against Virginia, Marshall led the Boilermakers with a career-high 19 points, connecting on 4-of-5 three-point shots. ALLISON UPDATE: Junior John Allison, who fractured a bone in his right foot Feb. 2 but was still named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten by the coaches, returned to action in the Big Ten Tournament opener with Minnesota. Along with being Purdue s leading rebounder (5.3 per game) and third-leading scorer (10.2 points per game), John emerged as a shot-blocking force for the Boilermakers. Against Auburn in the NIT, Allison established a career-high six blocked shots in just 21 minutes of action and paced the Boilermakers to their win over top-ranked Arizona with four blocked shots. Leading the team with 68 blocked shots this season, Allison now has 106 career blocked shots and is fifth on the school s all-time list. As a team, the Boilermakers blocked 147 shots in the 32 games this year, matching the school record set in a 33-game season of
