2 WOMEN S BASKETBALL TICKETS Tickets for San José State women s basketball home games are free for all SJSU students with a valid student ID. Adult tickets are $5.00 and $3.00 for youth (12 and under). The Event Center Box Office opens two hours prior to tip-off for any weekend, holiday game or doubleheader and is open regular business hours (10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) for weekday games or weekday doubleheaders. CUNNIGAN SAN JOSÉ STATE HOOPS CAREER SCORING LEADER With 25 points versus Boise State (1/21), Ta Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) moved past Ricky Berry (1,767 points from ) to assume ownership of the school s all-time scoring record. Just a game before, at Colorado State (1/17), she passed Karen Mason (1,760 points from ) to become San José State women s basketball s all-time leading scorer. Entering the game against Fresno State, Cunnigan has 1,830 points...and counting. Cunnigan drained a 3-pointer with 15:47 to play in the first half to pass Berry and assume the all-time scoring lead. She became the 51st woman in Division I to top her school s career scoring list (men s and women s), according to records available from NCAA member institutions. Among the 51, she is the fifth woman at a Mountain West school to lead her institution in career scoring. CUNNIGAN THE MOUNTAIN WEST S SHARP SHOOTER A two-guard, Ta Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) ranks as the Mountain West s top percentage shooter in conference games. Cunnigan, the second leading scorer in Mountain West games at 17.9 points, is making 48.9 percent of her shots (64-of-131) IT S A MAGIC NUMBER Former San José State career scoring leader Ricky Berry, who amassed 1,767 points in his career, wore #34. Ta Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.), who passed Berry with a 25-point outburst against Boise State to take sole possession of the school s career scoring title, also wears jersey #34. THINK PLAY 4KAY AND PINK ON SENIOR DAY The Spartans will celebrate the careers of three seniors, Ta Rea Cunnigan, Chereese Thomas and Rebecca Woodberry, in their last regular-season home game on Saturday, February 28. It will also be team s annual Play 4Kay, pink game to benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation, is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women s cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the under served and unifying people for a common cause. Coach Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women s basketball coach, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on January 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease. With the creation of the Fund, Coach Yow hoped to raise money to further cutting-edge research conducted by the nation s top doctors and medical experts to allow more and more cancer patients to have access to experimental drugs and clinical trials. 3 order for them to continue to make strides in finding a cure for cancer. To date, the Fund has contributed over $3.9 million in support of women s cancer research. CUNNIGAN AMONG ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS IN THE NCAA Among Division I women s basketball players, Ta Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) ranks second free throws made (498) and free throws attempted (679). She is 13th in steals (239). Her 1,539 field goal attempts are 12th most among active women players and she ranked 17th in field goals (606). Her 16.6/g career scoring average is the 12th highest among current players. Finally, Cunnigan is the eighth leading scorer among active players with 1,830 career points. SPARTANS CONTINUE TO TOP MOUNTAIN WEST IN SCORING San José State is scoring 80.6 points per game, which leads the conference. The team is averaging seven points more than its next closest rival (Boise State ppg). In addition to leading the Mountain West, San José State is the eighth highest scoring team in the nation. Against Columbia (11/16) the team set a program and conference record for points in a game, when they dropped 119 on the Lions, which is the fourth highest single-game point total in the NCAA this year. The Spartans have eclipsed 100 points in a game three times this year and have come away with a victory each time. BYRD CLIMBING THE SAN JOSÉ STATE REBOUNDING LIST With six rebounds versus Boise State (1/21) Riana Byrd (Jr., F, Richmond, Calif.) secured third place on the program s career rebounding list. Byrd has ripped down 720 rebounds in 79 games. She began the season in ninth place with 603 career rebounds and has moved up six spots to third, but she has some work to do to reach second place (Rhoda Chew rebounds from ). At her current pace Byrd could finish her career as just the second Spartan to reach the 1,000 point/1,000 rebound plateau. She would join Elinor Banks (1,672 points/1,062 rebounds ) as the only players in program history to reach the milestone. PRESSURE...SPARTANS 7TH IN STEALS & 9TH IN THE NCAA IN TURNOVER MARGIN Through 20 games the Spartans have shown what their pressure defense is capable of doing. SJSU has forced its opponents to turn the ball over 444 times and in those, made 238 steals. San José State has made those opponent miscues pay off to the tune of a advantage in points off turnovers. Nationally, the team ranks ninth in turnover margin at 6.85 and seventh in steals per game nabbing 11.9 per game. The team leads the Mountain West in both categories. SPARTANS RANK 22nd IN THE NATION IN 3-POINTERS San José State is hitting an average of 8.0 shots from beyond the arc per game, which ranks 22nd in the nation and is second in the Mountain West, but taking and hitting threes are nothing new under head coach Jamie Craighead. With 245 made 3-pointers and 793 attempts, the Spartans shattered the program s previous marks in each category. The previous record of pointers in the 27 games ( ) was equaled in just 20 games (at UNLV 1/29) last season. In addition, they passed the previous record for attempts in a season (493 in 29 games in ) in that same game. Both marks set Mountain West Conference records as well. SCOUTING FRESNO STATE The Bulldogs enter their match-up against the Spartans with a 17-3 record and are 9-0 in the Mountain West. They are averaging 64.8 ppg on the year and are outscoring their opponents by an average of 6.7 points per outing. 4 Fresno State is under the direction of first -year head coach Jaime White. Entering the season, White had a record at Northern Colorado in eight years as that program s head coach. The Bulldogs offense is led by senior forward Alex Sheedy, who tops the squad in points (16.5/g) and is second in rebounds (6.8/g). Bego Faz Davalos, a freshman center, leads the team in rebounds (7.7/g) and blocks (3.5/g). Senior guard Raven Fox is dishing out 2.3 assists per outing. This will be the 72nd meeting between these programs in which Fresno State own a dominant advantage. However, the Spartans have won each of the last two meeting in The Event Center. The Bulldogs came away with a win, in the game in Fresno in mid-january (1/14). The 46 points for the Spartans are their lowest output for the season and the 58 points they allowed are the second lowest given up by the team. It is the first MW weekly honor for Cunnigan this season and the second of her career. The senior from Winchester, Calif., led the Spartans to an victory over Boise State last Wednesday, the team s only game of the week. The win snapped a season-long three-game losing skid. Cunnigan led San José State with 25 points, shooting 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from the field, including 50.0 percent (3-of-6) from beyond the arc. She was also a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line and contributed two rebounds, two assists and two steals to the winning effort. Trailing 7-0 in the first minute, Cunnigan led a 14-2 run to put SJSU ahead, The three-pointer that capped the run made her the all-time career scorer in San José State basketball history (1,768 points; men or women). Then, tied at 70 with 6:23 to play, she nailed a three-pointer to give the Spartans a lead that the team would not give up. 5 CALHOUN NAMED A McDONALD S ALL-AMERICAN NOMINEE Breanna Calhoun, who signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Spartans beginning next year, is a 2105 McDonald s All American Games nominee. Calhoun is a 5-7 point guard who attends Bishop Alemany High School in Mission Hills, Calif. In each of the previous two seasons Calhoun led her team to the 2014 CIF Regional Final and in 2013 to the CIF Division I State Championship. In those years Bishop Alemany had a record. Following her junior year, Calhoun earned first-team All-Mission League honors and was a second-team All-State Division I selection by Cal-High Sports. This year Bishop Alemany is off to a 14-2 start, 2-0 in league play, and are ranked fifth in the state and ninth in the nation. MY OH MYZHANIQUE Myzhanique Ladd (Fr., G, Seattle, Wash.), the Ms. Basketball in the state of Washington, leads the Spartan freshman with a 6.5 ppg average and has earned starts in nine of the team s 15 games this year. On the team, MyMy ranks second in FT% (.830) and FTA (47), fourth in assists (23), and fifth in steals (17). Her FT% ranks 80th in the nation. SOPHOMORES STEP UP In their second season, the three sophomores who started their careers at San José State are stepping up and providing solid contributions to the team. Rachol West (So., F, Bakersfield, Calif.) has more than doubled her per game scoring average, from 3.3 to 7.8. It took West just 12 games to surpass her 29 game point total from a year ago. She ranks second on the team in 3-pointers (24) and is the second leading shooter from distance (.338). A 19-point outburst against Sacramento State (12/22) in which she drained 5-of-8 treys and grabbed five rebounds in just 19 minutes of work earned her first Mountain West Women s Basketball Player of the Week honor. Paris Baird (So., F, Van Nuys, Calif.) surpassed her point total from her freshman season in just 10 games this year. Her scoring average has more than doubled from 1.4 to 3.4 points per game. Averaging just one minute more per game than in , Baird has already passed totals from her freshman campaign in shots, 3-pointers and free throws. Her scoring average is off from last season (10.8 ppg in ), but she is averaging eight fewer minutes per game (down from 23 last year to 15 per game this year). EVERYBODY BRINGS SOMETHING TO THE PARTY! In , San José State is getting production up and down its lineup. Each of the 11 Spartans who have played in the first 15 games is averaging double-digit minutes. The bench has scored 508 of the team s 1,322 points; 39% of the total production. San José State has six games in which 11 players contributed in the scoring column and five games in which 10 players scored. NEWCOMER BRINGING IT AS WELL Nyre Harris (Jr., G, Stockton, Calif.) completed her year in residency at the conclusion of the fall term. In the seven games, six of which were starts, Harris is averaging 21.0 minutes, 2.0 assists, 1.7 steals and 7.9 points. CUNNIGAN TAKES THE NEXT STEP IN CAREER 3-POINTERS In addition to the San José State scoring records, in which Ta Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) trails Karen Mason (1,760 points, ) by six points, at Fresno State (1/14) she moved up another spot on the Spartans career 3-pointers list. Cunnigan hit two 3-pointers and passed Cricket Williams for sixth place on the program s career 3-pointers list. Cunnigan has made 115 threes in her career and enters the Colorado State game 11 behind teammate Rebecca Woodberry (Sr., F, Phoenix, Ariz.) who had 126 in 45 games. NEW YEARS EVE A CELEBRATION FOR SPARTANS With its win over Utah State, San José State finally celebrated its first victory on New Year s Eve on its fourth attempt. In its three previous attempts the Spartans were 0-3. On 12/13/1985 they lost at Santa Clara It was a loss to Brown on 12/31/11 and a defeat by UTSA on 12/31/12. WEST NAMED MOUNTAIN WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK Rachol West (So., F, Bakersfield, Calif.) has earned the Mountain West Women s Basketball Player of the Week honor for games played from December West, a sophomore out of Garces Memorial High School in Bakersfield, Calif., led the Spartans with a career-high 19 points in a defeat of Sacramento State last Monday. In 19 minutes off the bench, West went 7-for-13 from the floor (53.8 percent) including 5-for-8 (62.5 percent) from beyond the three-point line. She also grabbed five rebounds, dished out one assists and made one steal in the win. Trailing at the half, the team opened the second period with a 16-5 run capped by a three-pointer by West to put San José State in the lead, Her fourth three of the game pushed the Spartan advantage to with 14:40 to play and her career-best fifth three-pointer, with 5:02 left in the game, gave the Spartans a 10-point lead, SHILL MAKES LONG AWAITED RETURN VS. UTAH STATE Emily Schill (So., F, Tacoma, Victoria, Australia) saw her first game action in nearly 18 months, logging four minutes in the Spartans win over Utah State (12/31). Schill set the program s freshman single-game scoring record with 36 pts versus Utah State (1/12/13). Following her freshman campaign she suffered a leg injury, underwent surgery and has been rehabbing for the last 13 months. In her first action she had a rebound and blocked a shot. 7 CAREER FREE THROW RECORD FALLS IN UC DAVIS WIN By hitting each of her six free throw attempts in the Spartans win over UC Davis (12/10), Ta Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) set a new San José State career free throw record. Cunnigan passed Cricket Williams (466 from ) to establish the new record and counting. Currently, her 473made free throws are the record for the school (men s or women s program) and the most by any active women s basketball player in the NCAA. She glided past the men s record, Adrian Oliver s 442 free throws from , in the team s win at UC Irvine (11/22). WOODBERRY PICK UP RIGHT WHERE SHE LEFT OFF IN Rebecca Woodberry (Sr., F, Phoenix, Ariz.) finished the season as the 13th best 3-point shooter in the nation (3.1/g). Through six games of she is nearly on her pace from last year (2.5/g) and ranked 86th in the nation. She set a career-high with a 30-point outburst at Utah (11/14) to open the season and reached 500 career-point at San José State in the team s win over Cincinnati (11/29). The single-season record holder for 3-pointers (90 in ), Woodberry became the seventh player in program history to reach 100 made threes when she drained four at UC Riverside (11/20). She has made pointers in 33-career games at San José State. RECORDS GALORE FALL IN WIN OVER COLUMBIA The Spartans set several records in win over Columbia (11/16), mostly notably the 119 points. That s both a team and Mountain West record. The previous team high was 103, which they clearly shattered. That had been achieved twice: in a win over San Francisco State on Dec. 5, 1980, and a win over Utah State on Jan. 12, The Spartans also set school records with 42 free throws made and 53 free throw attempts. The teams combined for 69 made free throws, which is a Mountain West record. San Jose State s 89 field goal attempts and 53 free throw attempts are No. 2 in Mountain West history. Finally, the combined 195 points, the Spartans 119 points and the free throws made and attempted totals are Event Center records and the field goals (35) and field goal attempts tied Event Center records... Whew! COLUMBIA WAS A TEAM EFFORT In the Spartans win over Columbia, every player made a contribution to record setting performance. All 11 players were represented in the scoring column, led by Jasmine Smith (So., F, Burbank, Calif.) who scored 23 points. Ten grabbed a rebound with Myzhanique Ladd (Fr., G, Seattle, Wash.) and Paris Baird (So., F, Van Nuys, Calif.) paced the team with six each. Ten players dished out an assist with Aniya Baker (So., G, Perris, Calif.) toping the team with five and 10 players had steals with Smith leading the way with five. 15 Head Coach Jamie Craighead Oregon (2002) Second Year Craighead s Year-by-Year Coaching Record Total On September 16, 2013, Jamie Craighead, who coaches an up-tempo offense and stifling defense, was named the eighth head women s basketball coach at San José State University. Craighead came to San José State after spending four seasons at Sacramento State (2010-to-2013), where she was the winningest women s head basketball coach in 20 years and the only coach to post a winning conference record at Sacramento State since they entered the Big Sky Conference in the season. Under her guidance the Hornets reached the Big Sky Conference Tournament for just the fifth (2012) and sixth (2013) times in program history. In those appearances, Sacramento State earned its first tournament wins and reached the semi-final round both years. The youngest head coach in Division I when she took over the Hornets, Craighead s teams, playing a fast-break type offense, led the Big Sky Conference in scoring in each of her four seasons. Sacramento State set several program records in including field goals made, assists, blocked shots and fewest turnovers committed. In addition, the team s 19 wins equaled the program s single-season record, which was set in the season. The Hornets led the Big Sky in points, 3-pointers, and assists and on the defensive end, topped the league in steals and blocks. Also in , Craighead coached Kylie Kuhns and Megan Kritscher, two of the top post players in the Big Sky Conference. Kuhns, at only six feet tall, broke the school and Big Sky career rebounding records during the year, while also leading the team in scoring. For her efforts, Kuhns earned All-Big Sky first-team honors. Kritscher shattered the Big Sky single-season blocks record and ranked fourth in the NCAA in blocks per game for the season. In four seasons, nine of her players garnered All-Big Sky honors. She coached Big Sky Freshman of the Year Fantasia Hilliard, and 23 of her athletes received Academic All-Big Sky Conference honors for their work in the classroom. Prior to accepting the top job at Sacramento State, Craighead spent the season as an assistant for the Hornets before being promoted to Associate Head Coach the following year. Craighead started her coaching career in 2002 under two-time NCAA Division II Coach of the Year Gordy Presnell at Seattle Pacific University. In her three years at SPU, the team posted an 89-5 record, won three PacWest Conference titles, qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament each year and reached the championship game in After her success in Seattle, she spent two seasons as an assistant at Portland State University before taking a position at Sacramento State. As a collegiate player at the University of Oregon, Craighead led the Ducks to the 2002 WNIT championship after three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. When she finished her career, her point field goals made ranked second all-time in Ducks history.
