Cowboys Looking for Fourth Win in Last Five Games, Looking for Third Consecutive Road Win for First Time Since 1999: The Wyoming Cowboys enter the 2013 season having won three of their last four games to end the 2012 season. The last time UW won four out of five games was in the middle of the 2011 season. Wyoming won at home vs. UNLV, on the road at San Diego State, lost at home to TCU, won at Air Force and defeated New Mexico at home. UW won its last two road games of the 2012 season at New Mexico and at UNLV by identical scores. That marked the first back-to-back road wins by the Pokes since consecutive road wins in 2011 at San Diego State (30-27 on Oct. 29, 2011) and at Air Force (25-17 on Nov. 12, 2011). The most recent time that Wyoming has won three consecutive road games dates all the way back to 1999 when the Cowboys won at Air Force (10-7), at Louisiana-Monroe (38-20) and at Utah (43-29). Wyoming Junior Brett Smith Enters 2013 Season Tied for Longest Current FBS Streak in Terms of Most Passes Attempted Without Throwing an Interception: Wyoming junior quarterback Brett Smith enters the 2013 season having not thrown an interception in his last 174 pass attempts, dating back to Oct. 1, 2012, when his last seven pass attempts versus Fresno State began his streak. Smith is tied with Central Florida s Blake Bortles for the longest current streak entering the 2013 season. Smith is chasing former Wyoming quarterback Casey Bramlet for the all-time Mountain West record of 178 pass attempts without throwing an interception. In 2012, Colby Cameron of Louisiana Tech set the NCAA record for the longest streak for most passes attempted without throwing an interception for a career. That streak was 444 consecutive pass attempts and began Dec. 21, 2011 (vs. TCU) and ran until Nov. 17, 2012 (vs. Utah State). Cameron also set the NCAA single-season record in 2012, attempting 428 passes without throwing an interception. (Courtesy of Patrick Walsh of the Louisiana Tech Media Relations Office.) A native of Detroit, Mich., Hill was a First Team All-Big Ten selection as a senior at Michigan State in The Wyoming Cowboys and Season Openers: As the Wyoming Cowboys enter their 117th season of college football in 2013, the Pokes record in season openers stands at: (.647) in 116 previous season-opening games. They are (.760) in season-opening games at home, and are (.453) in road games to begin the season. Against non-conference opponents, the Cowboys are (.712) in season-opening games. That breaks down to (.816) at home against non-conference foes, and (.500) on the road. UW in 116 Previous Season Openers (Home & Away) (.647) UW in Season-Opening Games at Home (73 Games) (.760) UW in Season-Opening Games on the Road (43 Games) (.453) UW vs. Non-Conference Opponents in Season Openers (.712) UW vs. Non-Conference Opponents at Home in Season Openers (.816) UW vs. Non-Conference Opponents on the Road in Season Openers (.500) Wyoming Opening on the Road for the Second Consecutive Year and for Only the Third Time Since 2005: Wyoming will be opening its season on the road for the second consecutive season and for only the third time since the 2005 Cowboys opened on the road at Florida. Prior to the past two seasons, the Cowboys had opened at home for six consecutive years. A year ago, Wyoming opened the 2012 season at Texas, losing This week s season opener at Nebraska will mark only the 44th time in the previous 116 seasons in Wyoming s history that it has begun the season on the road. The last time Wyoming opened two consecutive seasons on the road were the 1999 and 2000 seasons when they opened at Defending National Champion Tennesse (losing in 1999) and at Auburn (losing in 2000). UW has opened its season on the road 43 previous times in history and is (.453) in those road openers. Wyoming has opened at home 73 times in history and is (.760) opening at home. The last time Wyoming won a season opener on the road was Sept. 16, 1967, at Arizona in a Western Athletic Conference game. UW won that game The last time Wyoming won a season opener on the road versus a non-conference opponent was Sept. 17, 1966, at Air Force by a score of 13-0, prior to Air Force joining the WAC. Openers in the Dave Christensen Era: This week s opener at Nebraska will mark the second time under head coach Dave Christensen that the Cowboys have opened a season on the road. In Christensen s three openers at home, his Cowboys are 3-0 in season-opening games, having defeated Weber State in 2009 (29-22), Southern Utah in 2010 (28-20) and Weber State again in 2011 (35-32) all in Laramie. The only previous time his team opened on the road was last year at Texas, losing Christensen s Wyoming teams are 1-3 (.250) when playing there first road game of the season. UW lost at Colorado (0-24) in its first game of 2009, lost at Texas (7-34) in its first road game of 2010, won at Bowling Green (28-27) in its first road game of 2011 and lost at Texas (17-37) in its first road game of When Smith Finishes Games, Cowboys Chances of Winning Increase: Over the past two seasons, there is no doubt that when quarterback Brett Smith is healthy and in the game the Wyoming Cowboys have a much better chance of winning. In his first two seasons as a Cowboy, Smith has played in 23 of Wyoming s 25 games. He has started all 23 games he has played in, but in addition to the two games he didn t play due to injury in 2012 he also was unable to finish the Toledo game due to injury, and he was unable to finish the Nevada game in 2012 receiving two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, leading to his removal in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys were ahead at the time and were driving. Nevada came back to win in overtime. Nebraska was 4-0 and ranked No. 2 in the nation in the Associated Press poll under head coach Tom Osborne, who was in his 22nd season as head coach of the Huskers. The first quarter began with Nebraska taking the opening kickoff. Wyoming held the Huskers to a three-and-out on its first possession forcing a punt. That was followed by a three-and-out by the Wyoming offense and another three-and-out by the Cornhuskers. On Wyoming s second offensive series, redshirt freshman quarterback Jeremy Dombek, making his first career start, led the Cowboys on a three-play, 69-yard drive. Dombek hit sophomore wide receiver Marcus Harris on a pass of 35 yards on first down. That was followed by an incompletion and a five-yard, false-start penalty against Wyoming. Then on second down and 15 from the Nebraska 39-yard line, Dombek hit Harris for the touchdown strike and took a 7-0 lead. After each team punted on consecutive possessions, Nebraska reached the UW 38-yard line on its next possession but fumbled the ball and Wyoming s Brent Schieffer, a senior defensive end from Omaha, Neb., recovered. Dombek threw the ball deep on first down, completing a 56-yard pass to senior wide receiver Eddie Pratt, taking the ball down to the NU six-yard line. Dombek then hit junior tight end Jeremy Gilstrap on a six-yard TD pass, and Wyoming took a 14-0 lead before a stunned Nebraska crowd. The second quarter didn t see its first score until the 5:25 mark, when Nebraska capped off a four-play, 34-yard drive with a one-yard Lawrence Phillips touchdown run, which began with a Nebraska interception of Dombek. Following a Wyoming punt, Wyoming sophomore Lee Vaughn, from Cheyenne, intercepted Nebraska quarterback Brook Berringer at the NU 32 and returned it to the 11-yard line. After a Nebraska pass interference penalty on first down put the ball at the NU twoyard line, Wyoming senior running back Terry Hendricks carried the ball in from one-yard out two plays later for a 21-7 Wyoming lead. That score seemed to wake the Huskers up. They proceeded to drive 64 yards on eight plays in exactly two minutes to score on a five-yard TD run by Berringer with only 12 seconds remaining in the half and narrowed the Wyoming lead to at half. Dombek came out on the first possession of the second half to drive the Pokes down to the Nebraska 38-yard line before he was intercepted. The Huskers turned that interception into a fourplay, 57-yard drive and the game was knotted at Dombek was intercepted again on the next possession at Wyoming s own 40-yard line. Nebraska s Phillips then broke a 40-yard TD run on first down, and in less than a minute the Cowboys had gone from a lead to a deficit. Nebraska scored on its third consecutive possesion of the third quarter to take a lead. It appeared that Wyoming s dream of the upset was gone. The Cowboys fought back to put together a nice seven-play, 52-yard drive resulting in a 40-yard field goal by Taylor Sorenson to end the third quarter, with the Huskers holding a advantage. Wyoming entered the fourth quarter having re-gained a little momentum, and it built on that momentum by holding Nebraska to three-and-out on its first series of the fourth quarter. But then on second down of UW s first fourth-quarter possession, Wyoming s hopes seemed to die when Dombek was knocked unconscious by Nebraska linebacker Troy Dumas, a native of Cheyenne, Wyo. Dombek was done for the day. Enter senior QB John Gustin, who had started the first four games of the season. Gustin gave the Pokes new life as he led Wyoming on an impressive 13-play, 86-yard drive that resulted in a two-yard TD pass to Gilstrap. Wyoming went for two on the extra point, and Gustin again hit Gilstrap to pull the Cowboys to within three points at with 9:09 remaining. The Nebraska crowd tried to re-energize their Huskers, and Nebraska moved the ball from its own 20-yard line to its 48, but Wyoming s defense stiffened and forced a punt, as the Nebraska crowd grew quiet. There was still over five and one half minutes to play in the game, and it looked like the Cowboys offense would get one more chance to pull off the upset. Nebraska s punter and future major-league baseball player Darin Erstad punted the ball 41 yards to the UW 11-yard line where Wyoming s redshirt freshman Je Ney Jackson was back to receive. But it wasn t to be Wyoming s day as Jackson fumbled at the eight-yard line, Nebraska recovered and one play later Phillips would dash into the end zone to give Nebraska a win. Wyoming s 32 points would prove to be the most scored on Nebraska all season, as the Huskers went on to a perfect 13-0 season and defeat Miami (Fla.) in the Orange Bowl for the National Championship. Wyoming would post a 6-6 record in 1994, but two years later, the Cowboys would rise to a No. 22 final ranking, hold the nation s longest winning streak and play in the Inaugural WAC Championship game behind All-America receiver Harris and head coach Tiller. Fresh off a 10-4 season in 2012, including a Capital One Bowl appearance, Nebraska was slated 18th in the nation in the 2013 Preseason Associated Press poll. NU began the 2012 season with a win over Southern Miss, but dropped a contest to No. 22 UCLA. Three straight wins and a loss to 12th-ranked Ohio State put the Huskers at 4-2. But the squad reeled off six-consecutive wins to sit at 10-2, before dropping the final two contests of the season. Big Ten beat writers picked the Huskers to finish second in the Legends division of the conference this season, just three poll points behind Michigan. There s no doubt the the Huskers will have a tough road going through the Big Ten, but NU reached the Big Ten Championship game in 2012, finishing second to Wisconsin. Offensively, NU returns two of its biggest weapons with the backfield tandem of senior quarterback Taylor Martinez and junior running back Ameer Abdullah. Martinez was a First Team All-Big Ten coaches selection a season ago, throwing for 2,871 yards, 23 touchdowns and a efficiency rating. The fleet-footed Martinez also rushed for 1,019 yards and 10 TDs. Abdullah was a force in the rushing game as well, racking up 1,137 yards and eight TDs. He surpassed the 100-yard mark in six games, earning Second Team All-Big Ten honors. Defensively, senior defensive back Ciante Evans and sophomore linebacker David Santos lead the charge. Evans was a First Team All-Big Ten selection at cornerback last season, tallying 56 tackles, two sacks and one interception. Santos was a Big Ten All-Freshman selection at the linebacker spot. He had 24 tackles for the season, including three tackles for loss. Against Michigan, Santos had 10 stops, earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. Head Coach Bo Pelini: Pelini enters his sixth season at the helm of Nebraska. He has found success in Lincoln, winning at least nine games in each of his first five seasons. He also has been part of three 10-win campaigns in the last four years.since 2008, the Huskers have been to five bowl games, winning two. In 2012, Pelini guided Nebraska to a 10-4 mark against the nation s fifth-toughest schedule. The hallmark of that season was a tendency to win close games. The Huskers were 5-1 in games decided by fewer than 10 points. He helped rally the squad to five second-half comebacks. Five players were named to the All-Big Ten squad in Pelini has made defense his calling card as a coach. Prior to Nebraska, he was LSU s defensive coordinator from , overseeing one of the nation s most feared defenses. Prior to that stint, he was a defensive coordinator at Oklahoma (2004) and coaches linebackers and secondary in the NFL for the Green Bay Packers, San Francisco 49ers and the New England Patriots. Last Meeting -- Nebraska 38, Wyoming 14: Just two seasons ago, fans were treated to the biggest home game in Wyoming Football history. The mighty Huskers of Nebraska came to War Memorial Stadium in what was one of the most anticipated matchups in Cowboy Football history. Both teams came into the contest sporting perfect 3-0 marks. Visiting Laramie for the first time in history, Nebraska was ninth in the nation in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls. In front of a capacity crowd of 32,617, Wyoming battled with Nebraska admirably. Quarterback Brett Smith, just a freshman, played well against a stout Nebraska defense. He hit wide receiver Mazi Ogbonna for a 48-yard TD strike just before halftime, and the Pokes went to intermission down But the Huskers went to work on the ground in the third quarter to score 17 unanswered points, putting the Cowboys at a 31-7 deficit until midway through the fourth quarter. The Cowboys fought back, as Smith tossed a TD to wide receiver Robert Herron from 10 yards out to cut the deficit to with 8:13 remaining. Again, Nebraska went to the ground to seal the game with an 11-play, 80-yard drive. The Huskers didn t attempt a pass on the drive and effectively sealed the game with 11-straight rushes for the touchdown to go up with 3:57 to go. The loss didn t slow the Cowboys, as they went on to win eight games and earn a berth in the New Mexico Bowl to end the season. Page 6

8 Robert Herron Named to 2013 Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List Senior from Los Angeles Named to Watch List for First Time: The 2013 Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List was released on Tuesday, July 16 by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc., and University of Wyoming senior wide receiver Robert Herron was one of the players selected. The Tallahassee Quarterback Club (TQC) Foundation, Inc., is the Florida-based creator and sponsor of the Biletnikoff Award. Each season since 1994, the Biletnikoff Award has been awarded to recognize the outstanding receiver in college football. One of the previous winners of the Biletnikoff Award was Wyoming Cowboy Marcus Harris in The award recipient is selected by the Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee, a group of over 200 prominent college football journalists, commentators, and former receivers. Receivers may be added to the watch list as their season performances dictate. According to TQC Foundation Chairman Ritchie Pickron, Given the significant number of outstanding college receivers playing in the 2013 season, the race for the Biletnikoff Award is wide open. We are extremely proud of Robert (Herron) for earning a spot on the Biletnikoff Watch List, said head coach Dave Christensen. To be included among the top receivers in the country is a credit to his talent and hard work. He had a very good season last year, despite missing some games with an injury. He enters this season healthy, and we are expecting Robert to have a big year his senior season. Herron was the only player in the Mountain West to post two receiving games of 150 yards or more in He caught five passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns in the season opener at Texas, and he had a career best 10 receptions for a career high 187 yards and two TDs versus San Diego State in the season finale. A native of Los Angeles, Calif., where he played at Dorsey High School, Herron earned Honorable Mention All-Mountain West Conference honors as a junior in He had 31 receptions for 657 yards in only eight games a year ago, missing four games due to injury. His exceptional speed allowed him to make several big plays his junior season, including an 82-yard catch and run for a touchdown at Texas, a 70-yard TD reception versus San Diego State and a 42-yard TD catch and run against SDSU. Herron averaged a team high 82.1 yards receiving per game, and averaged a team high 21.2 yards per reception. He didn t play in the required 75 percent of games to qualify for conference and NCAA rankings, but if he would have played in one more game his 82.1 yardper-game average would have been No. 2 in the Mountain West Wyoming Team Notes Brett Smith Named to Manning Award Watch List for Second Consecutive Year Mountain West Leads the List With Six Quarterbacks: University of Wyoming junior quarterback Brett Smith has been named to the 2013 Manning Award Watch List. The announcement was made on Friday, Aug. 2 by the Manning Award Committee and Allstate Sugar Bowl, sponsor of the Manning Award. Smith is one of only 30 quarterbacks in the nation named to this year s Manning Award Preseason Watch List. He is one of six Mountain West quarterbacks named to this year s list. The Mountain West leads all conferences with the most QBs named to this year s Manning Award Watch List. The SEC is second with five quarterbacks named, and the PAC-12 has four. This year s complete list of Manning Award Watch list members can be found at: allstatesugarbowl.org/site.php?pageid=19&newsid=611. This year s list of quarterbacks was selected in conjunction with the release of ESPN s new Total Quarterback Rating (QBR) the top 30 returning quarterbacks according to the QBR make up the Watch List. The winner will still be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, after the bowls. Based on ESPN s QBR rating, Wyoming s Smith had a ranking of 74.6 from last season, which ranked him 13th in the nation among returning quarterbacks. The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates bowl performances in its balloting. This is always an exciting time of year for college football players, coaches and fans, said Archie Manning. ESPN has come up with an interesting new statistical measure of quarterbacks so we decided to use the QBR to determine our Watch List, but we want to remind everyone that every quarterback in the country remains eligible to win this honor and we re looking forward to seeing how things play out on the field. Smith will be a leading All-America candidate in He ranked among the Top 25 quarterbacks in the NCAA in four different categories as a sophomore last season, despite missing two complete games and part of another due to injury. He led the Mountain West Conference in both passing efficiency and points responsible for, was second in the Mountain West in passing yards and third in total offense. As a sophomore, Smith ranked No. 5 in the NCAA and No. 1 in the Mountain West Conference in points responsible for in 2012, generating 20.2 points per game. Among FBS players returning for the 2013 season only 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M (21.69 points per game) and Tajh Boyd of Clemson (21.54 ppg) were responsible for more points per game. The other two players who ranked ahead of Smith in 2012 were former USC quarterback Matt Barkley (20.36 ppg) and former West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith (20.31 ppg) Wyoming s Smith ranked No. 11 in the nation and No. 1 in the Mountain West in passing efficiency in 2012 (with a quarterback rating of ). He ranked 16th in the country and No. 3 in the MW in total offense (308.5 yards per game). Smith also ranked 21st in the NCAA and No. 2 the conference in the passing yards (283.7 yards per game). After only two seasons and 23 career starts, Smith already is among the most prolific quarterbacks in University of Wyoming school history. He ranks fifth all-time in school history in total offense, with 6,417 yards; ranks sixth in career passing yards (5,459 yards); and ranks fourth in career touchdown passes (47). His 64 career touchdowns responsible for (rushing TDs, passing TDs and receiving TDs) rank No. 2 in school history and trail all-time leader Casey Bramlet by only six. Smith has averaged 3,208 yards of total offense his first two seasons. A similar season as a junior will make him Wyoming s career total offense leader, as he needs 3,158 yards to break Bramlet s career total offense record. Smith s extremely productive sophomore season, included him throwing 27 touchdown passes, which ranks as the second best single-season total in school history, while throwing only six interceptions. He completed 62.1 percent of his passes ( ) for 2,837 yards as a sophomore. He finished the season with 174 consecutive pass attempts without an interception, the second-best mark in Mountain West history and just four shy of the all-time MW record held by former Wyoming QB Casey Bramlet. Smith threw for 412 yards against UNLV -- a career best. He threw a career high five TD passes in a win at Idaho, and threw four touchdown passes in back-to-back games versus Colorado State and New Mexico. Smith started 10 games, missing two starts due to injury. He led all UW rushers with six TDs on the ground. Smith was the only sophomore in the nation named to the Manning Award Preseason Watch List in He was selected as the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week three times during his sophomore season and earned Honorable Mention All-MW honors. He was a two-time Manning Award Star of the Week as a sophomore, a three-time CollegeSportsMadness. com MW Player of the Week, and was selected as the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas MW Player of the Week once. Smith was invited to and attend this summer s Manning Passing Academy. It was the second consecutive year that Smith was invited to the Manning Passing Academy. Smith was originally invited by Archie Manning when the two met at the 2012 Gildan New Mexico Bowl, where Manning was the keynote speaker for the bowl luncheon. Page 8

Both redshirted in 2009 as true freshman -- Harris redshirt came about due to an injury in fall camp. As redshirt freshmen in 2010, they both had outstanding seasons, earning Freshman All- America honors -- Mertens was named a Second Team Freshman All-American by Phil Steele and Harris earned Fourth Team Freshman All-America honors, also from Phil Steele. In 2011, Harris enjoyed a productive season, ranking sixth on the Cowboy team and 27th in the Mountain West Conference in tackles with 65 total tackles as a sophomore. That year wasn t as kind to Mertens as he contracted an illness in the summer of 2011 that caused him to miss the entire season. A year ago, the roles were reversed as Harris suffered an injury in the season opener at Texas and missed the rest of the season, while Mertens bounced back in 2012 to start six games and record 34 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. Now as they enter their senior years, they are both healthy again, and should provide the Cowboy defense with a wealth of experience on the field and an added maturity, toughness and determination that comes from battling their way back from injury and illness. It will be Wyoming s first trip to Lincoln since 1994, when the Pokes nearly upset the eventual 94 National Champions befor losing When the Mountain West Conference announced its conference football matchups for the 2013 season on Tuesday, Feb. 12, it featured the renewal of three conference series for the Wyoming Cowboys against Hawai i, San Jose State and Utah State. The last time Wyoming faced Hawai i and San Jose State was back in 1997 as members of the Western Atheltic Conference. While Wyoming and Utah State have played as recently as 2011, the last time the two played as members of the same conference dates back to 1961 when both schools were members of the Skyline Conference, also known as the Mountain States Athletic Conference. In 2013 for the second consecutive year, Wyoming will host archrival Colorado State in War Memorial Stadium for the annual Border War. Wyoming s other conference home games in 2013 will include: Fresno State, Hawai i and New Mexico. The Cowboys Mountain West road trips this coming season will take them to: Air Force, Boise State, San Jose State and Utah State. Including Wyoming s 2013 season opener on Aug. 31 in Lincoln, Neb., versus the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Cowboys will face six teams that played in bowl games at the conclusion of the 2012 season. UW s other five opponents who appeared in bowl games are all conference foes -- Air Force, Boise State, Fresno State, San Jose State and Utah State. When you look at the quality of the football teams in our league, it is an exciting time to be part of the Mountain West Conference, said University of Wyoming Athletics Director Tom Burman. I know Coach (Dave) Christensen and his staff feel very good about the core of returning players we have coming back. I m sure our fans will be thrilled to see the Border War back on Jonah Field for the second straight year. We ll also be hosting a talented Fresno State team, along with a much-improved New Mexico team and an old rival in Hawai i. With the teams returning in our league from last season, and the addition of two bowl teams in San Jose State and Utah State, the Mountain West will be an outstanding conference, said UW head coach Dave Christensen. Every team in our league will present a great challenge, but our team is looking forward to that challenge. We start the season on the road at Nebraska, and five of our eight conference games will be against teams who played in bowl games last season. Every week should feature some great games. Each of the 12 Mountain West football teams conference schedules will feature eight conference games, with five of those games coming against the other teams in each school s division and the other three games being played against teams from the Mountain West s other division. As a member of the Mountain Division, Wyoming will play Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico and Utah State every season, and will play three games versus teams from the West Division. Wyoming s three West Division foes for the 2013 and 2014 seasons will be Fresno State, Hawai i and San Jose State. Each institution will play four home and four road Conference games each season, and will play every Mountain West opponent home and away during each four-year cycle. Intra-divisional opponents will alternate sites annually (three home/two away or two home/ three away). The three cross-divisional opponents will be the same in each two-year period, with the site alternating from Year 1 to Year 2. The three cross-divisional opponents who are missed initially will appear on the schedule in the second two years of the cycle, again alternating sites from Year 3 to Year 4. 26 Dave Christensen (Western Washington 85) Head Football Coach, University of Wyoming Dave Christensen is entering his fifth season as head coach of the Wyoming Cowboys in His Cowboys capped off the 2012 season by winning three of their last four games after facing key injuries and close losses early in the 2012 campaign. Included among those three wins down the stretch was a home win over archrival Colorado State. That marked the fourth consecutive win over CSU. Wyoming teams had not achieved that feat since the seasons. Christensen s fourth season saw the Cowboys excel off the field, as 11 team members earned Academic All-Conference honors. One of those was senior free safety Luke Ruff. Ruff achieved one of the highest academic awards in the nation when he was voted to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America First Team, becoming the first Cowboy to achieve that since Trenton Franz in Other honors Ruff earned in 2012 included being named: one of 30 national finalists for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award; a candidate for the 2012 Lott IMPACT Trophy; and a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation s William V. Campbell Award, also referred to as the Academic Heisman. He also received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, which he is using to pursue his master s degree in engineering at UW. Christensen s third season at Wyoming was his team s best, as he led Wyoming to a third-place finish in the Mountain West Conference and was named Mountain West Coach of the Year. He became the first Wyoming football coach to earn Coach of the Year honors since Joe Tiller in Wyoming s third-place finish in the Mountain West in 2011 placed them behind only No. 13 ranked TCU and No. 6 ranked Boise State. His Cowboys ranked as the sixth most improved team in the nation in 2011, and they were the surprise team in the Mountain West, finishing third after being picked sixth in the conference s preseason poll. UW s 8-5 record was its first eight-win season since The Cowboys third-place finish and 5-2 conference record matched Wyoming s best since becoming a member of the Mountain West in The Cowboys victories in 2011 included road wins over Mountain West rivals Colorado State, Air Force and San Diego State. The Pokes win over CSU marked the third consecutive over the Rams. Wyoming hadn t won three in a row over Colorado State since 1987, 88 and 89, and hadn t won consecutive road games vs. CSU since 1996 and 98. By defeating both Air Force and Colorado State in 2011, the Pokes accomplished a sweep of their Front Range rivals for the first time since The 2011 season concluded with Wyoming earning a bid to the Gildan New Mexico Bowl versus Temple. It was the second time as head coach of the Cowboys that Christensen guided Wyoming to a bowl game. The last time that occurred at Wyoming was The only conference teams to defeat UW in 2011 were nationally-ranked TCU and Boise State. Christensen s 2011 team became his second in three seasons to win at least seven games. His 2009 Cowboy squad posted a 7-6 record. You couldn t have asked for much more from a head coach in his first season. Christensen s first year as a college head coach in 2009 was filled with highlights. He led the Wyoming Cowboys to a bowl game in his first season, becoming only the second Cowboy head coach to accomplish that feat -- the other being Paul Roach in Christensen became the first UW head coach to win a bowl game in his first season, as his Pokes defeated Fresno State, in double overtime, in the New Mexico Bowl. He also guided Wyoming to a road win over archrival Colorado State in the regular-season finale, bringing the Bronze Boot back to Laramie. For a team that began the season picked to finish last (ninth) in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll, Christensen s Cowboys ended the season with a 7-6 overall record, a 4-4 league mark and a fifth-place finish in a league that had three teams end the season ranked among the Top 18 in both the Associated Press Media Poll and USA Today Coaches Poll. And his team accomplished all this while playing a schedule that was ranked as the eighth toughest in the nation and included BCS national runner-up Texas. All told, Christensen had seven of his Cowboys earn All-Conference honors his first season at UW. While he delivered on his promise to the 2009 senior class that he would do everything he could to get them to a bowl game, he also built a team with an eye toward the future. In his second season at UW, Christensen s young team faced one of the nation s most difficult schedules, playing three teams that were ranked in the Top 5 in the nation at the time the Cowboys faced them (No. 3 Boise State, No. 4 Texas and No. 5 TCU) and playing a fourth Top 10 ranked team in No. 10 Utah. Wyoming ended Christensen s second season on a high note, defeating archrival Colorado State, 44-0, in the season finale. Eight Cowboys earned All-Conference recognition at the conclusion of the season -- two Second Team selections and six Honorable Mention honorees. Wyoming Football hired its dynamic and innovative new leader on Dec. 1, 2008, as University of Wyoming Athletics Director Tom Burman announced that Christensen, then the Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator at Missouri, had been selected as the new head coach of the Cowboys. Christensen became the 31st coach in Wyoming Football history. While the offensive coordinator at Missouri, Christensen was named the 2007 National Offensive Coordinator of the Year by Rivals.com and was also runner-up for the 2007 Frank Broyles Award, which honors the top assistant coach in the nation each season. He helped lead the Missouri Tigers to the Big 12 Championship game in both the 2007 and 2008 seasons as champions of the Big 12 North. In 2008, Mizzou ranked No. 4 in the NCAA in passing offense (330.4 yards per game), No. 6 in scoring offense (42.2 points per game) and No. 8 in total offense (484.1 yards per game). The Tigers concluded the 2008 season ranked No. 16 in the final USA Today Coaches Poll, No. 19 in the final Associated Press Media Poll and were No. 21 in the final BCS Rankings entering the college bowl season. Missouri defeated Northwestern, in overtime, in the 2008 Valero Alamo Bowl. The 2007 season saw Missouri conclude the season ranked No. 4 in the final Associated Press ranking. That was the highest seasonending ranking in school history for the Tigers. Mizzou finished the season by defeating Arkansas, 38-7, in the Cotton Bowl, giving the Tigers a school record 12th win on the season. His 2007 offense ranked No. 5 in the nation in total offense (490.3 yards per game), No. 8 in scoring offense (39.9 points per game) and No. 9 in passing offense (314.1 yards per game). Christensen earned a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from Western Washington in 1985 and a master of science degree in college instruction and sports science from Eastern Washington in He is 52 years old, born Jan. 17, Christensen and his wife Susie have three children, Katie, D.J. and Emily.
