Kickoff for the game is set for 5 p.m. CDT with BTN providing the national television coverage. The Huskers come into the game following a hard-fought victory over Wyoming in the season opener. The victory extended Nebraska s nation-leading streak of season-opening victories to 28. The win also gave Nebraska coach Bo Pelini his 50th win at the helm of the Husker program. Nebraska showed a powerful running game in the season opener, rolling up 375 rushing yards. Four Nebraska players picked up at least 75 rushing yards, led by I-backs Ameer Abdullah and Imani Cross who both topped the century mark on the ground. Southern Miss comes to Lincoln following a loss to Texas State in its season opener last Saturday in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles showed a powerful offense in the loss, racking up 377 passing yards, but Southern Miss was hampered by six turnovers in the contest. Saturday s game was originally scheduled to be played in Hattiesburg, but the schools agreed to move the contest to Lincoln last fall. The Series Nebraska and Southern Miss will meet for the fifth time on the gridiron on Saturday evening at Memorial Stadium. Nebraska holds a 3-1 lead in the all-time series between the schools, including a victory in the 2012 season opener. NU also defeated the Golden Eagles in Lincoln in 1999, and won at Hattiesburg in USM s lone victory in the series came in Lincoln in The Coaches Nebraska: Bo Pelini (Ohio State, 90) owns a record (.714) in his sixth season. Pelini has guided NU to nine or more wins in each of his first five seasons as head coach, joining Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne in accomplishing that feat at Nebraska. With Nebraska s win over Wyoming in the season opener, Pelini became the fifth coach in NU history to win 50 games on the NU sideline, joining Dana Bible, Bob Devaney, Tom Osborne and Frank Solich. Southern Miss: Todd Monken (Knox College, 75) is in his first season as Southern Miss head coach and his first season overall as a collegiate head coach. Monken has been a successful offensive assistant throughout his coaching tenure, most recently guiding Oklahoma State s high-powered offense in 2011 and Nebraska Football Nebraska is all-time, one of just eight schools with 800 all-time victories Nebraska has won five national championships (1970, 1971, 1994, 1995, 1997). Combined with his 31 career rushing touchdowns, Martinez has accounted for 80 career touchdowns, passing Tommie Frazier for second among NU quarterbacks, trailing only Eric Crouch s 90 career touchdowns. 4Junior I-back Ameer Abdullah had a career-long 62-yard run in the second quarter to set up a Nebraska touchdown. Abdullah s previous career long rush was 45 yards against Arkansas State last season. Abdullah finished the night with 19 rushes for 114 yards, marking his seventh career 100-yard rushing game. 4Sophomore I-back Imani Cross scored a one-yard second-quarter touchdown, and ran 31 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Cross two-td effort was the third multi-td game of his career. Cross finished the game with 13 carries for a career-high 105 yards, topping his 100-yard effort against Idaho State last season. 4Nebraska rushed for 375 yards, marking the 13th time in 15 games since the start of last season Nebraska has rushed for at least 200 yards. Nebraska has topped 300 yards on the ground four times since the start of last season. The 375 yards were the most by Nebraska in a season opener since rushing for 413 yards in the 2007 opener against Nevada. Nebraska rushed for 144 yards in the third quarter alone against Wyoming. 4Junior receiver Kenny Bell caught seven passes for 57 yards, pushing his career receptions total to 89. The game marked the fourth time in his career that Bell has had at least six receptions. 4Senior receiver Quincy Enunwa caught touchdown passes of 3 and 7 yards in the second half. Enunwa entered the game with three career touchdowns, including one TD reception last season. Enunwa finished the game with three catches for 27 yards and moved into the top 20 on the NU career receptions list with 67. 4Junior receiver Jamal Turner caught four passes for 43 yards, including a 17-yard first quarter touchdown reception. Turner s touchdown catch was his fourth in the past seven games. 4Cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste had a first-quarter interception of a Brett Smith pass that led to a Nebraska touchdown and a 10-7 lead. Pelini added a Big Ten Legends Division title in 2012 to three straight Big 12 North Division crowns from 2008 to 2010, when Pelini was the the first coach in the history of the Big 12 to win at least a share of a division title in each of his first three years. He has guided Nebraska to at least nine wins each of his first five seasons in Lincoln, and three 10-win seasons. With the win over Wyoming in the opener, Pelini reached 50 career wins at Nebraska, making him just the fifth Husker coach to reach that milestone, joining Tom Osborne, Bob Devaney, Frank Solich and Dana X. Bible. Pelini took charge of the Huskers after a highly successful five-year run as a collegiate defensive coordinator, including orchestrating NU s defensive efforts in Pelini picked up his first college head coaching victory as NU s interim coach in the 2003 Alamo Bowl against Michigan State. Following his one season at Nebraska, Pelini served as the co-defensive coordinator at Oklahoma in 2004, helping the Sooners to the Big 12 title and BCS title game. He then followed with three seasons as the defensive coordinator at LSU. With the Tigers, Pelini led three consecutive defenses to No. 3 national rankings in total defense. He culminated his time in Baton Rouge by helping the Tigers to the 2007 national championship. Pelini Continues Defensive Accomplishments at Nebraska At Nebraska, Pelini has continued his history of building championship defenses. In 2009, the Huskers led the nation in scoring defense and had the nation s best scoring defensive improvement (18.1 ppg). When combining statistics from the past four-plus seasons, NU ranks second in pass efficiency defense, fourth in passing defense, 15th in scoring defense and 15th in total defense. With Pelini s previous track record, the success of his Nebraska defenses is no surprise. 4Pelini led the 2003 Blackshirts to a school-record 47 takeaways, including a Big 12-record 32 interceptions, and finished second nationally in scoring defense, first in pass efficiency defense and 11th in total defense. 4Pelini guided LSU defenses to No. 3 national finishes in total defense each of his three seasons in Baton Rouge. 4In 136 games as a collegiate coach, Pelini s defenses have posted 10 shutouts, held the opposition to seven points or less 40 times and to 20 points or less 86 times. Husker Staff Returns Intact for 2013 Season Nebraska s coaching staff has a familiar look in 2013, as all nine assistants returned to Coach Bo Pelini s staff. Nebraska s staff is one of 18 coaching staffs in the country to return intact this season. Tim Beck is in his third season as offensive coordinator in 2013, after guiding Nebraska s offense to a top-10 national rushing effort last season. Seventh-year Nebraska assistant Barney Cotton adds the role of run game coordinator and will tutor the Nebraska tight ends this fall, in addition to his role with the offensive line. Ron Brown (running backs), Rich Fisher (wide receivers) and John Garrison (offensive line) also return to the offensive staff. The defensive staff is under the direction of second-year coordinator John Papuchis. Last season, the Blackshirts ranked among the nation s top units in pass defense and pass efficiency defense. The defeat was the Golden Eagles 13th straight loss, the longest losing streak in the country. USM went 0-12 in 2012, prompting a coaching change. Statistically, Southern Miss performed well in Todd Monken s coaching debut, but the Golden Eagles came up short on the scoreboard. USM out-gained Texas State , but the Golden Eagles lost the turnover battle, 6-1. Offensively, Allan Bridgford threw for 377 yards and one touchdown, completing 28-of- 53 passes. It was an impressive debut performance for Bridgford, who transferred to Southern Miss after graduating from Cal this summer. Rickey Bradley caught seven passes for 193 yards, while Tyre oune Holmes grabbed 12 passes for 96 yards. On the ground, USM rushed for just 23 yards on 24 carries, led by Kendrick Hardy s 27 yards. Bridgford was sacked three times for 26 rushing yards lost. Defensively, Southern Miss limited Texas State to just 81 yards rushing on only 2.0 yards per carry. The Golden Eagles also held TSU to 134 yards passing, while recording 11 tackles for loss and allowing only 13 first downs. Series History Nebraska leads the all-time series with Southern Miss, 3-1, including a 2-1 record at Memorial Stadium. Last year, the Huskers defeated Southern Miss in the season opener, marking NU s largest margin of victory in the series. The other two matchups in Lincoln have been close, with Nebraska earning a victory in 1999 and Southern Miss winning in 2004, which marked the Huskers first non-conference home loss in 13 seasons. Southern Miss Head Coach Todd Monken Todd Monken is in his first season at Southern Miss and his first season as a head coach. Monken lost his head coaching debut last Saturday against Texas State, falling Monken came to Southern Miss after developing a reputation as one of college s top offensive minds at Oklahoma State. With the Cowboys, Monken served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in both 2011 and In his two seasons as offensive coordinator, Oklahoma State set single-season school records for points scored, touchdowns and first downs, among many other records. The Cowboys scored more than 50 points 10 times in Monken s 26 games as offensive coordinator, including five 60-point efforts, two games scoring 70 points and one game scoring 80 points. Monken also coached at Oklahoma State from 2002 to 2004, serving as pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach. He faced Nebraska twice while at Oklahoma State, posting a 1-1 record against the Huskers. Before returning to Oklahoma State in 2011, Monken spent four years as the wide receivers coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also worked with receivers at LSU from 2005 to 2006, when he served two years on the same staff as Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini, who served as the Tigers defensive coordinator. He was one of only four players to reach that milestone before the end of their junior year, joining Kaepernick, Vince Young (Texas) and Brad Smith (Missouri). 4 Martinez needs two non-passing touchdowns Saturday to reach 200 career points scored. Martinez has scored 31 rushing touchdowns in his career - good for 186 points - while adding one two-point conversion to total 188 career points. With 12 more points scored, Martinez will become only the 10th player in NCAA FBS history to score 200 points and pass for 200 points. He would be the only Husker to accomplish that feat and one of only four players in Big Ten history. 4Martinez is also looking to become only the ninth player in NCAA history to rush for 40 TDs and pass for 40 TDs. NU Hopes To Keep Running Game in High Gear in 2013 Nebraska has featured one of the nation s top rushing attacks each of the past three seasons, and the 2013 season opener showed Nebraska should have the same ability in The Huskers rushed for 375 yards in the seasonopening victory over Wyoming, with four players topping 75 rushing yards, led by 100-yard efforts from both Ameer Abdullah and Imani Cross. 4 Nebraska s 375 rushing yards were its most in a season opener since 2007, and also marked the fourth time since the start of the 2012 campaign that Nebraska has topped 300 yards on the ground. NU has now reached at least 200 rushing yards in 13 of 15 games since the beginning of last season. 4The four players reaching at least 75 yards on the ground marked the first time NU has reached that group milestone since four Huskers topped the century mark on the ground at Baylor in True freshman Terrell Newby rushed 15 times for 76 yards in the season opener against Wyoming. Newby s rushing attempts and yards were the most by a true freshman in an opener since (Quentin Castille, 18-78) A year ago, Nebraska averaged rushing yards per game to lead the Big Ten and rank eighth nationally in rushing offense. The rushing average per game was the best by a Nebraska team since the Huskers ran for yards per game in The 2012 season marked the third straight season Nebraska has averaged better than 200 rushing yards per game and ranked in the top 15 nationally in that category. Abdullah carried a heavy load in the rushing game, teaming with quarterback Taylor Martinez to give Nebraska a pair of 1,000-yard rushers. The 5-9, 190-pound Abdullah finished the 2012 season with 1,137 yards, while averaging 5.0 yards per rushing attempt. The play of Abdullah keyed a Nebraska offense that ranked eighth nationally in rushing, averaging better than 250 yards per game. The Huskers gained at least 200 yards on the ground 12 times in 14 games in Abdullah averaged 81.2 rushing yards per game and earned second-team All-Big Ten honors from the league s coaches, while being an honorable-mention pick by the media. Abdullah and Martinez posted the 32nd and 33rd 1,000-yard rushing seasons in Nebraska history, and Abdullah s 1,000-yard campaign was the eighth in school history by a sophomore. His 1,137 yards ranked as the 19th-best single-season effort at Nebraska. Abdullah picked up where he left off last season with a strong opening night performance against Wyoming. Abdullah rushed 19 times for 114 yards, including a career-long 62-yard rush in the second quarter. Abdullah s 100- yard effort was the seventh of his career. 4 Abdullah has 1,401 career rushing yards, and is on pace to become the 28th player in school history with 2,000 rushing yards. 4 Abdullah rushed for better than 100 yards in each of his first five career starts. He was the first Nebraska player to record 100-yard rushing games in each of his first five starts since Lawrence Phillips topped 100 yards in each of his first 11 starts in Abdullah continued to be an explosive all-purpose threat for the Huskers in several areas in Abdullah averaged 13.1 yards per punt return, including an 81-yard return for a score against Idaho State. He also averaged 21.2 yards per kickoff return and had an 83-yard kickoff return against Wisconsin. Abdullah s all-purpose yards per game were fourth in the Big Ten and 31st nationally. Abdullah had 1,884 all-purpose yards in 2012 to rank sixth on the NU single-season all-purpose yardage list. It was the most all-purpose yards for a Husker since Bell Leads Big Ten s Top Returning Receiving Corps Nebraska returned arguably the finest trio of receivers in school history, led by junior Kenny Bell, who is in position to threaten several NU school records at the midpoint of his career. Bell is joined by fellow junior Jamal Turner and senior Quincy Enunwa to give Nebraska one of the nation s top groups of receivers. Bell was a second-team All-Big Ten selection as a sophomore and got his 2013 season off to a strong start against Wyoming. Bell caught seven passes for 57 yards, with the seven catches the second-highest total of his NU career. As a sophomore, Bell led Nebraska with 50 receptions for 863 yards and eight touchdowns. The 50 receptions marked just the seventh time in school history a Husker player had reached 50 catches, and the 863 receiving yards were the fourth-highest single-season total in NU history. Bell s 2012 season stacked up as one of the best in school history for a NU receiver. 4 Bell s 863 receiving yards were fourth on the NU season receiving yardage list, and he set a Nebraska sophomore record, shattering the previous mark of 665 yards by Johnny Rodgers in Bell became the 21st Husker with 1,000 career receiving yards. He now has 1,381 career receiving yards to rank eighth in school history. He is 151 yards from the top five on the list and less than 400 yards from the third spot on the career chart. 4 Bell s 50 receptions in 2012 ranked seventh on the NU single-season list, while his 89 career catches are ninth. He is just 19 catches from moving into the top five on the career chart and stands 77 receptions from the school record. 4 Bell had career highs of nine receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns against Minnesota. His 136 receiving yards were the most by a Husker in three seasons and bettered his career high of 133 yards at Ohio State. 4 Bell s 17.3 yards per catch in 2012 ranked second in the Big Ten and eighth nationally among players in the top 100 in receiving yards per game. His average was the 10th-best in Husker history among players with at least 30 catches in a season. 4Bell had 16 receptions that covered at least 20 yards, with all eight of his touchdown catches coming from 25 yards or more. Both Enunwa and Turner flashed their ability in the season opener, each finding the end zone in the win. Turner caught four passes for 43 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter. Turner now has four TD receptions in his past seven games, after not having a touchdown catch in the first 20 games of his NU career. Enunwa made the most of his three catches on the evening, finding the end zone twice in the second half to help the Huskers pull out the win. Enunwa s touchdown catches were the fourth and fifth of his NU career. Enunwa also moved into the top 20 on the NU career receptions list against Wyoming. He now has 67 career catches and is just 15 grabs from moving into the top 10. Enunwa has 800 career receiving yards, putting him in position to join NU s list of 1,000-yard career receivers. That group currently includes 21 players. In 2012, Enunwa had 42 receptions for 470 yards, with Turner adding 32 catches for 417 yards. As a group, Bell, Enunwa and Turner accumulated 124 receptions for 1,750 yards and 12 touchdowns. In the 2013 season opener against Wyoming, the group had 14 receptions, including three touchdown grabs. Enunwa s 42 receptions in 2012 were just outside of the single-season top 10 on the Nebraska charts. With both Bell and Enunwa topping the 40-catch barrier last season, Nebraska had a pair of players with at least 40 receptions for just the fifth time in school history. Enunwa matched his career high with six receptions for a career-best 110 yards at Northwestern in He also had six catches in the season opener against Southern Miss, and had at least three catches six times in Turner gave Nebraska a third explosive option at wideout during his sophomore season. He was one of Nebraska s stars in the second half of the season, and the 6-1, 185-pounder made the most of his first two career TD receptions. He caught a five-yard touchdown pass with six seconds left to provide the game-winning score at Michigan State and added a five-yard fourth-quarter grab for a score against Penn State to put the Huskers ahead for the first time. Turner finished with 32 catches for 417 yards in He had 18 of his 32 receptions in the final six games of the season. Long Leads Veteran Husker Offensive Line Offensive guard Spencer Long is the anchor of an experienced 2013 line that will feature five seniors who have seen extensive action throughout their Husker careers. The 6-4, 315-pound Long has started every game at right guard the past two-plus seasons and has been a key force in one of the nation s top offenses. Last season, Nebraska led the Big Ten and ranked eighth nationally in rushing offense at yards per game. The Huskers also topped the Big Ten in total offense averaging yards per game. The line paved the way for a strong rushing attack in game one, as NU rolled up 375 rushing yards and 530 yards of total offense in the season-opening win over Wyoming. Long s play was recognized in The former walk-on earned first-team All-Big Ten honors from both the league media and coaches, and was a second-team All-America pick by the Associated Press and the Walter Camp Foundation. Long became the first NU offensive lineman since 2001 to be named a first- or second-team All-American. He is the first returning All-American on the offensive line since This fall, Long is a candidate for first-team All-America honors as well as a leading contender for the Outland Trophy. Nebraska boasts a nation-leading nine Outland Trophy winners, including six by offensive linemen. Long s honors will likely go beyond the field. He has been an Academic All-District VII selection each of the past two years and is a strong candidate for first-team academic All-America honors this year. The veteran line also features returning senior starters in tackles Brent Qvale and Jeremiah Sirles. Sirles has started 29 games in his Nebraska career, including all 14 games at right tackle in Qvale earned 13 starts at left tackle last season and has played in 41 games in his career. They are joined on the line by fellow seniors Cole Pensick and Andrew Rodriguez, who both had starting experience prior to this season. Pensick split time between guard and center last season and started the final two games of the year at center. Rodriguez was the top reserve at tackle last season and has nine career starts. The group includes three 2013 seniors who were on scholarship during the spring semester and will remain on scholarship for their final season as Huskers. That trio includes quarterback Ron Kellogg III, tight end Jake Long and safety Wil Richards. Kellogg III served as Nebraska s No. 2 quarterback last season and is serving in that role again this fall. Long was part of Nebraska s regular rotation at tight end the past two seasons and is the starter at the position in Jake Long joins his twin brother, Spencer, as walk-ons who have gone on to earn a scholarship, as Spencer Long received the honor last fall. Richards has been a key member of the Nebraska special teams the past two years. Starkebaum is a second-generation Husker, following in the footsteps of his father, John, who lettered for NU from The younger Starkebaum has been a reserve linebacker and key scout team performer throughout his career. Pelini alternates at the center position after serving as the backup at the spot last season. Janovich played as a true freshman at fullback last season and is expected to share playing time with the top unit at that spot in Janovich earned a scholarship in just his second season in the program, the quickest any player has moved from walk-on to scholarship under Pelini. Overall, the group of new scholarship recipients includes four native Nebraskans in Kellogg, Long, Janovich and Nickens. Richards joined the NU program from Lee s Summit, Mo., Pelini is a Youngstown, Ohio native, while Starkebaum joined the NU program from Sterling, Colo. The announcement continues a long Husker tradition of walk-ons earning scholarships during their career at Nebraska. Pelini has now placed 26 former walk-ons on scholarship during his six seasons as Nebraska s head coach Huskers Look to Continue Academic Success Nebraska has a long history of academic success in its football program. In 2012, Nebraska had two academic All-Americans in first-team selection Rex Burkhead and second-teamer Sean Fisher. The two football academic All- Americans put Nebraska over the 300-mark in academic All-Americans in all sports and Nebraska has a nation-leading 104 football academic All-Americans. The 2013 Huskers will look to continue Nebraska s outstanding academic tradition. Twin brothers Spencer and Jake Long each earned Academic All-District VII honors last season and will be strong candidates for academic All-America honors this fall, with several other Huskers in line to contend for academic honors as well. Grads Fill 2013 Husker Roster Coach Bo Pelini s Husker teams have an excellent tradition of excelling in the classroom and the 2013 team is no different. Among the 23 members of Nebraska s 2013 senior class, six players had earned their degrees by the end of the spring semester. Another three players finished in August, while place-kicker Pat Smith joined the NU program as a Western Illinois graudate. Nebraska s 10 graduate students during the 2013 season ranks third among all FBS schools, trailing only 12 graduates for both Louisiana Tech and Virginia Tech. Offensive lineman Cole Pensick and fullback C.J. Zimmerer graduated last December, while defensive end Jason Ankrah, cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste and offensive linemen Brent Qvale and Jeremiah Sirles finished their degree work in May. Andrew Green, Thad Randle and Mo Seisay joined the group as graduates in August Schedule Features Eight Home Games Nebraska will face another demanding schedule in the Big Ten this fall, and will have the opportunity for eight home games for the first time in five seasons and just the seventh time in school history. Nebraska is opening with five consecutive home games over a six-week stretch, continuing with Saturday s matchup against Southern Miss. Following the Golden Eagles visit, UCLA will come to Lincoln on Sept. 14, and the Huskers round out the non-league season against South Dakota State on Sept. 21. Following a bye week, Nebraska will begin conference play on Oct. 5 against Illinois in Lincoln, in the Huskers 2013 Homecoming contest. The 2013 season will mark the first time NU has opened with five home games since NU s first two road games come in October, at Purdue on Oct. 12 and at Minnesota on Oct. 26. Nebraska will face a demanding stretch of games in November beginning with a Nov. 2 visit from Northwestern. Michigan State (Nov. 16) and Iowa (Nov. 29) will visit Lincoln in the final month of the regular season, while NU must travel to Michigan (Nov. 9) and Penn State (Nov. 23). 4 The schedule includes six teams who participated in a bowl game last season, including five Big Ten opponents. 4Nebraska will face Illinois and Purdue for the first time as Big Ten opponents, after not facing the two schools in 2011 and The matchup with Purdue is just the second meeting between the teams. 4 UCLA makes its first visit to Lincoln since 1994, however the Bruins are one of Nebraska s most frequent nonconference opponents. The schools have met 11 times, including last year s UCLA win at the Rose Bowl. 4 Nebraska and Iowa will meet in the third Heroes Game on Friday, Nov. 29, the day after Thanksgiving. It will mark the 24th straight year Nebraska has played on Black Friday. Memorial stadium Construction Complete for 2013 Season Fans coming to Memorial Stadium this fall are greeted by a new look to the East side of Memorial Stadium. The East Stadium expansion will push Nebraska s average attendance beyond 90,000. While adding nearly 6,000 seats, including a combination of club seats, suites and general public seating, the addition preserves the rich tradition and original architecture of Memorial Stadium. The East Stadium addition also includes dedicated restrooms and concessions areas. A new grand lobby, expanded concourse and additional first-aid areas also were added. No East Stadium seats were removed during the expansion and no season ticket holders were required to relocate their seats as part of this project. The addition includes dedicated areas on the ground floor for research, both for Athletics and UNL Research. The 50,000-square foot research area is a unique collaboration between Athletics and Academics. The Nebraska Athletic Performance Lab is housed on the north end of the facility, and is operated by the Athletic Department. The Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior is housed in the south half of the facility. Along with the additions on the East Stadium, Nebraska also replaced the FieldTurf at Memorial Stadium this summer. The field features the Tom Osborne Field lettering for the first time since the 1998 season. A detailed description of the East Stadium addition can be found later in this notes package. 12 2013 Nebraska Football Huskers.com Jake Long to be Presented Sullivan Scholarship Tight end Jake Long will be presented with the George Sullivan Endowed Scholarship before the start of Saturday s game. The scholarship, presented by the Touchdown Club and friends, is named in honor of George Sullivan, who served as Nebraska s head athletic trainer from 1977 to 1995 and as an assistant athletic trainer and head physical therapist from 1953 to Long, a senior biological sciences/pre-medicine major, is on pace to earn his degree this December. He carries a cumulative grade-point average above 3.85 and is a strong candidate for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors this fall, after earning a spot on the all-district team in Long has also been a member of the honor roll every semester of his career. The scholarship was fully endowed in Sullivan s honor in 2008 by the Touchdown Club of Nebraska, Inc., and many former Husker student-athletes graciously contributed to the fund. The scholarship is presented annually to a Nebraska varsity football student-athlete who has demonstrated a high level of athletic and academic achievement, with a strong commitment to community, effective leadership skills, a high degree of integrity, and commitment to excellence in all endeavors. Preference is given to student-athletes who intend to pursue a career in a health-related field. Nebraska to Honor 1964 Orange Bowl Championship Team Nebraska will recognize the 50th anniversary of the 1963 Cornhuskers on Saturday night. The team earned a berth in the 1964 Orange Bowl and defeated Auburn, The Huskers made their second Orange Bowl appearance in 1964, but their first under second-year head coach Bob Devaney. Nebraska notched its first Orange Bowl victory in the 1964 contest, while also winning for the first time in three tries in what are now considered Bowl Championship Series (BCS) bowl games. NU finished with a final 10-1 record in 1963, including the Orange Bowl victory. The Huskers won the Big Eight title with a perfect 7-0 mark, and Nebraska s lone setback was a home loss to Air Force. No. 10 NU earned a berth in the Orange Bowl with a victory against sixth-ranked Oklahoma in the regular-season finale, which clinched Nebraska s first Big Eight title and first overall conference crown since In the Orange Bowl, quarterback Dennis Claridge scored on a 68-yard touchdown run just 1:13 into the game. Nebraska added a pair of first-half field goals to take a 13-0 lead into the locker room and held on for the six-point win. Claridge ran for 108 yards in the win, as Nebraska out-rushed Auburn, Nebraska Unveils Statue of Bob Devaney in East Stadium The University of Nebraska unveiled a statue of Hall-of-Fame Football Coach and former Husker Athletic Director Bob Devaney the day before the 2013 season opener. The statue was installed in the new East Stadium Plaza which serves as the doorstep to a 52,000 square-foot research facility, 38 new suites, 6,000 new seats and a graphic-rich tribute to Nebraska football tradition inside the historic gate 20 entrance. The life-sized bronze statue of Devaney, sculpted by Omaha artist Joe Putjenter, was unveiled in a brief ceremony attended by Mike Devaney and Rob Devaney, Bob s respective son and grandson, Nebraska Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst, Tom Osborne, Nebraska s former head coach and athletic director, and UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman. Nebraska had only three winning teams in the 21 seasons before Devaney arrived. Devaney s teams won backto-back national championships in 1970 and 71 and captured eight conference championships in his 11 years as head coach. His overall record in 11 years at Nebraska included a 32-game unbeaten streak. His career head coaching record at both schools was for winning percentage of.806. While he was head coach at Nebraska, Memorial Stadium attendance more than doubled to 72,700. Devaney and Osborne became the third coaching duo to post back-to-back 100-win careers at the same institutions, but the first pair to accomplish that feat in just 22 years. Devaney served as Nebraska s Athletic Director for 26 years from 1967 to NCAA Record Sellout Streak Continues in 2013 One of the most remarkable streaks in collegiate sports passed its 50th anniversary last fall, and continues into the 2013 season. Nebraska has sold out every game at Memorial Stadium since Nov. 3, 1962, and the streak now stands at 326 games heading into Saturday s matchup with Southern Miss. Nebraska will look to begin its next 50 years of sellouts this fall at a newly expanded Memorial Stadium. With eight home games in 2013, the streak is likely to reach 333 by season s end. NU celebrated the 300th consecutive sellout at Memorial Stadium on Sept. 26, 2009, against Louisiana-Lafayette, with a then-stadium record crowd of 86,304. Notre Dame is second in alltime consecutive sellouts with 234, 92 fewer than the Huskers. Nebraska establish a new stadium record for attendance on Saturday against Wyoming with the crowd of 91,185 fans. The crowd ranks as the eighth-largest to see any Nebraska game. While the Huskers were awarded the national title by the coaches in 1997, NU finished second to Michigan in the AP poll. In 1970, Nebraska was awarded the AP national title, but not the coaches (Texas was first, Ohio State second and NU third) as the final poll was released before the bowl games were played. In the coaches poll (since 1950), NU is tied for fourth with Miami and Texas with four titles, behind Alabama (8), Oklahoma (6) and USC (5). Conference Crowns Nebraska has won 43 football conference championships in school history and is looking for its first Big Ten Conference crown in in The Huskers won 13 conference titles under Tom Osborne and eight under Bob Devaney. Construction began the following spring, and the stadium was built in 90 working days. Judy Burnfield, NAPL s director, sees the lab s influence going far beyond that mission. We re driving our research by the needs of those served in the environment, she said. We ll do research not only while studentathletes are in our academic program, but also as they age. Our goal is to have science support everything we do. That s because researchers recognize that students are collegiate athletes for a relatively short period of their lives. NAPL uses high-tech tools to analyze an athlete s performance so that the effect of different training interventions can be determined. Other projects will be more longterm, such as researching what factors may predict injuries or chronic conditions later in an athlete s life. CB3: World-Leading Capability There are many good reasons why the renovated East Stadium will house an unprecedented partnership between Nebraska Athletics and the University of Nebraska- Lincoln s academic research leaders. Two of the best reasons are 1) UNL psychologist Dennis Molfese, the center s director who has a strong international reputation; and 2) the center s unique capability to capture functional magnetic resonance imaging through the recording of the brain s electrical activity at the same time it can track eye movement. We can capture three distinctly different kinds of imaging information simultaneously, Molfese said. No other lab in the world can do all of these things at the same time on the same person. State-of-the-art equipment will enable CB3 to uncover mysteries about brain functioning and how it affects human behavior. The center s research will range from the heritability of social attitudes and the neurological basis of decision-making to better understanding brain injuries and other cognitive impairments. Concussion research is a cornerstone of the center s work. Molfese, an international expert in brain imaging, and other UNL researchers are studying how the brain functions and processes information before and after concussions. Even though they will focus on student-athletes, this research could improve treatment for other traumatic brain injuries suffered by 10.1 million Americans annually. 40 2013 NEBRASKA FOOTBALL Game 1 No. 18 Nebraska 37, Wyoming 34 SCORE BY QuaRTERS final Wyoming Nebraska Lincoln (Aug. 31) --- No. 18 Nebraska rushed for 375 yards and amassed 530 total yards on its way to a victory over Wyoming for the Huskers 28th consecutive season-opening win. Playing in front of a school-record 91,185 fans at Memorial Stadium, Nebraska rolled up 375 yards on 63 rushes, including 114 yards from junior I-back Ameer Abdullah and 105 yards and a pair of touchdowns for sophomore I-back Imani Cross. Senior quarterback Taylor Martinez also completed 17-of-22 passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns, including a pair of scoring strikes to Quincy Enunwa. Despite the impressive offensive totals for the Huskers, a pair of late NU turnovers allowed the visiting Cowboys to put a scare into the Big Red. NU led with the ball on the Wyoming 25 with just under seven minutes left in the game, but a Martinez pass was intercepted by Wyoming s Blair Burns and returned to the Wyoming 48. It took quarterback Brett Smith and the Cowboys just two plays and 24 seconds to find paydirt, as Smith hit receiver Jalen Claiborne to trim NU s lead to 37-27, after Wyoming s two-point conversion attempt was smothered by Husker defensive back Josh Mitchell. After another turnover, Smith struck quickly again, hitting receiver Robert Herron on a 47-yard touchdown pass just 29 seconds later to pull Wyoming within On NU s ensuing drive, Wyoming forced a three-and-out by the Huskers, who got a clutch 31-yard punt from Sam Foltz that was caught by NU s Kenny Bell at the Wyoming 6. Smith got a chance at the upset, but the Husker defense held Wyoming without a shot at the end zone to escape with the victory. Smith completed 29-of-43 passes for 383 yards with four touchdowns in a losing effort, although Ciante Evans and Stanley Jean-Baptiste each pulled down interceptions for the Huskers. Overall, the two teams combined for 1,132 yards of total offense, as Wyoming finished with 602 total yards, including 219 yards on the ground. The Cowboys total yards marked the eighth-highest mark against the Big Red in school history.
