Nebraska has won 28 of its 29 season openers by nine points or more. The win improved Bo Pelini s record at Nebraska to moving him into third place on the NU career coaching victory list. He moved past Frank Solich (58 wins), and trails only Tom Osborne and Bob Devaney on the chart. Nebraska rolled up 784 yards of total offense, including 211 yards in the first quarter and 446 yards before halftime. The 784 yards of total offense are the fifth-most in school history and the most since NU gained 787 in a season-opening win over Utah State on Sept. 7, The mark also set a Big Ten modern era record for total offense in a game. The previous high total offense mark in Pelini s tenure as head coach was 645 yards against South Dakota State in Nebraska rushed for 498 yards, the most in Bo Pelini s seven seasons, bettering 451 rushing yards at Kansas State in 2010, which also marked the last time NU topped 400 yards on the ground. It is the most in any game since Nebraska rushed for 641 yards at Baylor in Nebraska has now topped 300 rushing yards 16 times under Pelini and has a 16-0 record in those games. The Huskers 498 rushing yards are the most under Bo Pelini, bettering 451 rushing yards at Kansas State in 2010, which is the last time NU had rushed for 400 yards in a game. The game marked the ninth time in Bo Pelini s seven seasons as head coach that NU has topped the 50-point barrier. It also marked the first time NU has topped 50 points in a season opener since a win over Nevada in Senior I-back Ameer Abdullah rushed 21 times for a career-high 232 yards, bettering his previous career high of 225 yards against Illinois in Abdullah s rushing total marked the 15th-most rushing yards in school history and the 37th 200-yard rushing game in Nebraska history. Abdullah has four career games of 150 rushing yards or more. His 232 yards were the second-most by a Husker in a season opener, trailing Marlon Lucky s 233 yards against Nevada in With his 232 rushing yards, Abdullah increased his career rushing total to 3,209 rushing yards and became the eighth player in school history with 3,000 career rushing yards. Abdullah passed the late Ken Clark (3,037 yards) and Calvin Jones (3,153 yards) to move into the No. 6 spot on the NU career rushing list. The 232-yard rushing effort marked Abdullah s 18th career 100-yard rushing game, the third-most in school history, and the most among active FBS players. Abdullah trails Mike Rozier (26) and Ahman Green (20). Abdullah entered the FAU game tied with Eric Crouch who had 17 career 100-yard rushing games. Sophomore I-back Terrell Newby notched his first career 100-yard game with 16 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns. It marked the 76th double 100-yard rushing game by two Nebraska backs in history. Newby s previous career rushing high came with 76 yards on 15 carries against Wyoming in Sophomore quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. completed 15-of-29 passes for a career-high 271 yards and two touchdowns. His previous career high was 173 yards last season against Northwestern. Armstrong also finished with a career-high 333 yards of total offense, including 62 yards rushing and a touchdown on seven carries. Sophomore receiver Jordan Westerkamp caught seven passes for 125 yards, setting career highs in both categories. His previous bests were five catches at Penn State and 104 receiving yards against Northwestern, both last season. Westerkamp had a 41-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter for his second career touchdown reception. The touchdown catch was the second of his career, adding to a 49-yard touchdown against Northwestern last season. Senior receiver Kenny Bell caught four passes for 116 yards, including a 63-yard reception in the third quarter, the third-longest catch of his career. Bell increased his career yardage total to 2,018 yards to become the third player in school history with 2,000 career receiving yards, joining Johnny Rodgers (2,479 yards) and Nate Swift (2,476 yards). Bell increased his career receptions total to 138 and moved into third place on the NU career receptions list, moving past (Marlon Lucky, 135 catches) and Terrence Nunn (136 catches). Bell and Westerkamp combined to become the first Husker duo to both top 100 receiving yards in a game since Marlon Lucky (IB) and Maurice Purify (WR) did so at Colorado in The only previous time that has occurred in school history was earlier in 2007 when Purify (WR) and Sean Hill (TE) both topped the century mark against Ball State. Nebraska did not turn the ball over in the game, marking the first time since the 2012 opener against Southern Miss that the Huskers went without a turnover. Pelini has won or shared four divisional titles in his first six seasons as head coach, including the 2012 Big Ten Legends Division crown. He guided NU to three straight Big 12 North Division crowns from 2008 to 2010, becoming the first coach in the history of the Big 12 to win at least a share of a division title in each of his first three years. He has guided Nebraska to at least nine wins each of his six seasons, and three 10-win seasons. Pelini is third on the Nebraska career victories list, trailing only Tom Osborne and Bob Devaney. Pelini took charge of the Huskers after a highly successful five-year run as a collegiate defensive coordinator, including orchestrating NU s defensive efforts in Pelini picked up his first college head coaching victory as NU s interim coach in the 2003 Alamo Bowl against Michigan State. Following his one season at Nebraska, Pelini served as the co-defensive coordinator at Oklahoma in 2004, helping the Sooners to the Big 12 title and BCS title game. He then followed with three seasons as the defensive coordinator at LSU. With the Tigers, Pelini led three consecutive defenses to No. 3 national rankings in total defense. He culminated his time in Baton Rouge by helping the Tigers to the 2007 national championship. In addition to his five seasons as an assistant at the collegiate level, Pelini coached in the NFL for nine seasons, serving three years each with the San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers. Pelini was a team captain and four-year letterman as a safety at Ohio State from 1987 to Pelini Stacks up Well with Peers In guiding Nebraska to a record, Pelini has put himself in impressive company. 4 Among schools currently in a power conference, Pelini is just the eighth head coach in college football history to win at least nine games in each of his first six seasons on the job at that school. The group includes three Nebraska coaches (Bob Devaney, Tom Osborne, Pelini). 4 When looking only at coaches in their first head coaching job at a major conference school, Pelini is one of only three to win nine games in each of his first six years, joining Osborne and Barry Switzer (Oklahoma). 4 Pelini was among a group of 18 FBS head coaches who were hired for their jobs beginning with the 2008 season. Pelini leads that group of 18 head coaches in victories over the past six-plus years with 58 wins. In fact, Pelini is one of only six coaches in the group of 18 still in the job he was hired for prior to the 2008 season. Pelini Continues Defensive Accomplishments at Nebraska At Nebraska, Pelini has continued his history of building championship defenses. In 2009, the Huskers led the nation in scoring defense and had the nation s best scoring defensive improvement (18.1 ppg). When combining statistics from the past five seasons, NU ranks second in pass efficiency defense, third in passing defense, 19th in scoring defense and 14th in total defense. With Pelini s previous track record, the success of his Nebraska defenses is no surprise. 4Pelini led the 2003 Blackshirts to a school-record 47 takeaways, including a Big 12-record 32 interceptions, and finished second nationally in scoring defense, first in pass efficiency defense and 11th in total defense. 4Pelini guided LSU defenses to No. 3 national finishes in total defense each of his three seasons in Baton Rouge. 4In 149 games as a collegiate coach, Pelini s defenses have posted 10 shutouts, held the opposition to seven points or less 42 times and to 20 points or less 94 times. Husker Staff Has Only One Change for 2014 Season Pelini had just one change in his full-time coaching staff during the offseason. Charlton Warren joined the Huskers as secondary coach after spending the past nine seasons at Air Force, including the past two years as defensive coordinator. Warren worked directly with the defensive backs all nine years with the Falcons. He also earned a reputation as the Falcons top recruiter and coordinated Air Force s recruiting efforts from 2006 to Warren joined a defensive staff led by John Papuchis, who enters his third season as defensive coordinator and seventh year overall on the Husker staff. Ross Els in his fourth season as the linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator, while defensive line coach Rick Kaczenski enters his third year at Nebraska. On offense, Tim Beck is in his fourth season as offensive coordinator and seventh season overall on Pelini s staff. Ron Brown (running backs) and Barney Cotton (offensive line/tight ends) have also been on staff for each of Pelini s seven seasons. Viator has never had a losing season, and he has led the Cowboys to three Southland Conference titles and four FCS playoff appearances. A McNeese State alumnus, Viator is a three-time nominee for Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year. His play earned him Big Ten Offensive Player-of-the- Week honors for the second time in his career. Abdullah entered the year as the active career leader in the FBS ranks in all-purpose yards, while ranking third in career rushing yards. His Big Ten-leading 1,690 rushing yards in 2013 were the most for any returning player in the FBS ranks. Abdullah s outburst against Florida Atlantic could provide the spark for a 2014 season that could leave the Homewood, Ala., native in rare company in Nebraska history. His 232 yards rushing against the Owls ranked as the 15th-best rushing effort in school history, and bettered his previous career best of 225 yards against Illinois in The outing marked his 18th career 100-yard rushing game, the third-most in Nebraska history. The rushing effort against FAU continued Abdullah s assault on Nebraska s career charts. 4 Abdullah became the eighth player in Nebraska history to top 3,000 career rushing yards and the third NU I-back to join that group since Against FAU, Abdullah increased his career rushing total to 3,209 yards to move into the No. 6 spot on the Husker career rushing list, passing Ken Clark (3,037 yards) and Calvin Jones (3,153 yards). He had 26 receptions for 232 yards and two touchdowns in 2013 and has 52 career receptions. He had one catch for nine yards in the opener against FAU. 4 Abdullah had 1,999 all-purpose yards in 2013, the No. 3 single-season total in school history. Smith s success in 2013 continued a recent tradition of Nebraska boasting remarkable success in the field goal department. 4 Since Alex Henery took over as the starting place-kicker in 2007, Husker kickers have connected on 123-of-143 field-goal attempts (.860). 4 Nebraska kickers in the same seven-season stretch have missed just four field goals from inside 40 yards, connecting on 76-of-80 attempts in that range, a remarkable 95 percent accuracy rate. 4 Eleven of the 20 field goal misses since 2007 have come on attempts of 50 yards or longer. Huskers Show Ability to Rally; Win Close Games Nebraska posted a 5-0 record in 2013 in games decided by seven or fewer points, including four close wins after Nov. 1. The Huskers posted three close Big Ten wins against Northwestern (3 points), Michigan (4 points) and Penn State (3 points, OT). Nebraska also posted a three-point victory over Wyoming in the season opener, and finished the 2013 season with a five-point win over Georgia in the Gator Bowl. Nebraska has won nine straight games decided by seven or fewer points, dating back to the 2012 season. The nine straight wins mark the longest winning streak in the nation in games decided by seven or fewer points. 4 Nebraska rallied from a 21-7 deficit for a win against Northwestern. That game marked Nebraska s fifth win in Big Ten play over the last two seasons when trailing by double digits. Nebraska also rallied from double-figure deficits for conference wins in 2012 against Wisconsin (17 points), Northwestern (12 points), Michigan State (10 points) and Penn State (14 points). 4 Nebraska won six Big Ten games in 2012 and 2013 after trailing in the fourth quarter, including three in 2013 (Northwestern, Michigan and Penn State). Nebraska also trailed Northwestern, Michigan State and Penn State in the fourth quarter before winning in Five Huskers Named Captains Five Nebraska seniors have been selected as captains for the 2014 season. The group includes three offensive players in I-back Ameer Abdullah, receiver Kenny Bell and offensive guard Jake Cotton. The defense is represented by cornerback Josh Mitchell and safety Corey Cooper. The players come from five different states including Nebraska (Cotton), Alabama (Abdullah), Colorado (Bell), Illinois (Cooper) and California (Mitchell). Cooper and Cotton have already earned their undergraduate degrees, while Abdullah, Bell and Mitchell are all on track to graduate this December. As a group, the five captains have combined for 100 career starts heading into the 2014 season. This marks the second consecutive season Nebraska has elected season-long captains after choosing game captains during Bo Pelini s first five seasons as head coach. Abdullah is just the eighth player in school history to be a two-time team captain, including five under Bo Pelini Cotton s selection marks the ninth straight year a Nebraska native has been a captain, including five Lincoln natives. The selection of two defensive backs as captains marks the first time NU has had two captains from the same position group since defensive linemen Zach Potter and Ty Steinkuhler in Nebraska last had a pair of defensive backs serve as captains in the same year in 1999, when Mike Brown and Ralph Brown were captains. Husker Senior Class Making the Grade Nebraska has a long history of academic success, and the 2014 team is poised to carry on that tradition. Nebraska leads the nation in academic All-Americans in football with 107 all-time first- or second-team selections. Nebraska also leads the way across all sports with 314 academic All-Americans. Nebraska has had 11 academic All-Americans in Bo Pelini s six seasons as head coach, the second-most in the nation in that time period. 4 All 13 members of Nebraska s 2014 senior class have already graduated or are on track to earn their degree by the completion of the fall semester. 4Among the group, safety Corey Cooper earned his degree in May, while linebacker Zaire Anderson and offensive guard Jake Cotton graduated in August. The other 10 members of the class are on pace to graduate this December. Junior Kevin Williams was also among the August graduates. Game 2 vs. McNeese State Nebraska Football

36 2014 NEBRASKA FOOTBALL Game 1 No. 22 Nebraska 55, Florida Atlantic 7 SCORE BY QUARTERS FINAL Florida Atlantic Nebraska Lincoln (Aug. 30) --- Ameer Abdullah sprinted for a career-high 232 yards, while Kenny Bell and Jordan Westerkamp each added 100-yard receiving games, as No. 22 Nebraska rolled to a 55-7 victory over Florida Atlantic. The Husker offense enjoyed a record-setting day with a pair of 100-yard rushers and a pair of 100-yard receivers in the same game. Abdullah finished the day with 21 carries for 232 yards and a touchdown. Terrell Newby added his first career 100-yard game, crossing the plateau with 16 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Bell added his fourth career 100-yard receiving game with four catches for 116 yards, while Westerkamp added his second career 100-yard game with career highs of seven catches for 125 yards and a touchdown. The Huskers finished with a Big Ten record 784 total yards, including 498 rushing and 286 passing. Tommy Armstrong Jr. completed 15-of-29 passes for 271 and two touchdowns, while adding seven carries for 62 yards and another score to finish with 333 yards of total offense. The Owls answered with a touchdown drive of their own, capped by Jaquez Johnson s 20-yard touchdown pass to Lucky Whitehead with 4:56 left in the first. That would be the only score allowed by the Blackshirts, as Nebraska limited FAU to 200 yards of total offense. During one stretch, the Huskers forced seven consecutive 3-and-outs. Armstrong led NU on another first-quarter touchdown march, as NU went 75 yards in nine plays, capped by Westerkamp s 36-yard TD grab. The Huskers added freshman place-kicker Drew Brown s first career field goal, a 44-yarder, with 12:18 left in the half to push the margin to After the Blackshirts held on their next possession, Abdullah cruised over the 100-yard rushing mark for the 18th time in his career before breaking off a 47-yard scoring jaunt. Another defensive stop set up a seven-play, 66-yard drive capped by a punishing three-yard touchdown run by Imani Cross with 2:30 left to push the Big Red lead to The Huskers scored on each of their first five drives. Nebraska put the game out of reach, scoring on their first four possessions of the second half, including two scoring runs by Newby.
