The game, which will mark Homecoming in Lincoln, is set for an 8 p.m. kickoff at Memorial Stadium and will be televised by BTN. The Huskers will head into conference action with a perfect 4-0 record, marking the third time in seven seasons under Bo Pelini Nebraska completed non-league play unbeaten. Nebraska secured its 4-0 start with a victory over Miami before a Memorial Stadium record crowd on Saturday night in Lincoln. Nebraska s offense dominated the game with a powerful rushing attack, grinding out 343 rushing yards, including 229 yards by Heisman candidate Ameer Abdullah. Nebraska s victory over Miami allowed the Huskers to advance in the national polls. The Huskers moved up three spots in both polls to No. 21 in the Associated Press Poll and 19th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Illinois comes into the game with a 3-1 record following a come-from-behind victory over Texas State on Saturday in Champaign. The Illini feature a high-powered offensive attack as they average yards per game, including yards passing per contest. This marks the second of four consecutive seasons in which Nebraska will open Big Ten play against Illinois. It also marks the second straight year NU has hosted Illinois on Homecoming. The Series Nebraska holds an edge in the series between the two schools, including a victory in Lincoln last season in the first meeting as Big Ten opponents. Saturday s matchup will be just the fourth meeting since Nebraska holds a 6-1 edge in games played in Lincoln The Coaches Nebraska: Bo Pelini (Ohio State, 90) owns a record (.721) in his seventh season as head coach. He has guided NU to nine or more wins in each of his first six seasons as head coach, joining Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne in accomplishing that feat at Nebraska. His 62 wins trail only Osborne and Devaney on the NU wins list. Pelini joins Alabama s Nick Saban as the only head coaches in the nation to win nine or more games each of the past six seasons. Illinois: Tim Beckman (Findlay, 88) is in his third season as Illinois head coach and his sixth season overall as a collegiate head coach. Beckman has guided the Fighting Illini to a 9-19 record in his three seasons and owns a overall record as a collegiate coach. He previously served as the head coach at Toledo from 2009 to He had assistant coaching stops at Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Bowling Green, Elon and Western Carolina. Nebraska s win was its 400th all-time victory at Memorial Stadium, making Nebraska the fifth school to win 400 games in its current stadium. Nebraska joins Tennessee, Ohio State, Michigan and LSU on the list. Nebraska senior I-back Ameer Abdullah rushed a career-high 35 times for 229 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding a three-yard touchdown reception. Abdullah s previous career high in carries was 31 against Penn State in The 229 rushing yards marked Abdullah s second 200-yard rushing game of 2014, following a career-high 232 yards against Florida Atlantic. He also topped 200 yards with 225 yards last season against Illinois. With his 229 rushing yards, Abdullah increased his career rushing total to 3,602 and moved into third place on the Nebraska career rushing list. Abdullah passed Roy Helu Jr. (3,404) and Eric Crouch (3,434) to move into the No. 3 spot. He now trails only Ahman Green (3,880) and 1983 Heisman Trophy winner Mike Rozier (4,780). In addition to his 229 rushing yards, Abdullah added three receiving yards and 81 kickoff return yards for a careerhigh 313 all-purpose yards, bettering his 252-yard effort against Wisconsin in Abdullah s 313 all-purpose yards rank second on the Nebraska single-game all-purpose yardage list and is the most by a Husker since Roy Helu Jr. had a school-record 321 all-purpose yards against Missouri on Oct. 30, It was also the most all-purpose yards in the FBS ranks in Abdullah increased his career all-purpose yardage total to 5,762 yards and became Nebraska s career all-purpose yards leader, passing 1972 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers (5,586). Abdullah s three-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter was his second receiving touchdown of 2014 and the sixth of his career. Nebraska rushed for 343 yards, marking its second game this season with 300 or more rushing yards. Nebraska improved to 17-0 under Pelini when rushing for 300 or more yards. Miami had allowed 268 total rushing yards in the first three games of the season. Senior receiver Kenny Bell caught four passes for 70 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7. Bell s 40-yard touchdown catch was the 16th of his career, tying him with Maurice Purify for third on the Nebraska career touchdown receptions list. Bell s 40-yard touchdown reception marked his 14th straight TD catch of at least 20 yards. Senior defensive back Josh Mitchell returned a fumble 57 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to give Nebraska a lead. Mitchell s fumble return for a touchdown was the first by a Husker since Austin Cassidy had an 11-yard fumble return for a touchdown at Minnesota on Oct. 22, It was the longest fumble return by a Husker since Ralph Brown had a school-record 74-yard fumble return for a touchdown at Kansas State in Nebraska s 14-play, 79-yard scoring drive in the second quarter consumed 6:35, marking Nebraska s longest scoring drive of the season in terms of plays and time. Nebraska dominated the time of possession, holding the ball for 33:20, including 12:43 in the second quarter alone. Miami had 8:33 of time of possession and 18 snaps in the first quarter, and ran just 25 plays in the second and third quarters combined. Nebraska has scored a touchdown on its opening drive in three of four games this season. Nebraska junior linebacker David Santos registered his first career interception in the first quarter to end a Miami scoring threat. Santos also registered a season-high 10 tackles. True freshman Joshua Kalu added his first career interception in the fourth quarter. Pelini has won or shared four divisional titles in his first six seasons as head coach, including the 2012 Big Ten Legends Division crown. He guided NU to three straight Big 12 North Division crowns from 2008 to 2010, becoming the first coach in the history of the Big 12 to win at least a share of a division title in each of his first three years. He has guided Nebraska to at least nine wins each of his six seasons, and three 10-win seasons. Pelini is third on the Nebraska career victories list, trailing only Tom Osborne and Bob Devaney. Pelini took charge of the Huskers after a highly successful five-year run as a collegiate defensive coordinator, including orchestrating NU s defensive efforts in Pelini picked up his first college head coaching victory as NU s interim coach in the 2003 Alamo Bowl against Michigan State. Following his one season at Nebraska, Pelini served as the co-defensive coordinator at Oklahoma in 2004, helping the Sooners to the Big 12 title and BCS title game. He then followed with three seasons as the defensive coordinator at LSU. With the Tigers, Pelini led three consecutive defenses to No. 3 national rankings in total defense. He culminated his time in Baton Rouge by helping the Tigers to the 2007 national championship. In addition to his five seasons as an assistant at the collegiate level, Pelini coached in the NFL for nine seasons, serving three years each with the San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers. Pelini was a team captain and four-year letterman as a safety at Ohio State from 1987 to Pelini Stacks up Well with Peers In guiding Nebraska to a record, Pelini has put himself in impressive company. 4 Among schools currently in a power conference, Pelini is just the eighth head coach in college football history to win at least nine games in each of his first six seasons on the job at that school. The group includes three Nebraska coaches (Bob Devaney, Tom Osborne, Pelini). 4 When looking only at coaches in their first head coaching job at a major conference school, Pelini is one of only three to win nine games in each of his first six years, joining Osborne and Barry Switzer (Oklahoma). 4 Pelini was among a group of 18 FBS head coaches who were hired for their jobs beginning with the 2008 season. Pelini leads that group of 18 head coaches in victories over the past six-plus years with 61 wins. In fact, Pelini is one of only five coaches in the group of 18 still in the job he was hired for prior to the 2008 season. Pelini Continues Defensive Accomplishments at Nebraska At Nebraska, Pelini has continued his history of building championship defenses. In 2009, the Huskers led the nation in scoring defense and had the nation s best scoring defensive improvement (18.1 ppg). When combining statistics since the start of the 2009 season, NU ranks second in pass efficiency defense, third in passing defense, 16th in total defense and 18th in scoring defense. With Pelini s previous track record, the success of his Nebraska defenses is no surprise. 4Pelini led the 2003 Blackshirts to a school-record 47 takeaways, including a Big 12-record 32 interceptions, and finished second nationally in scoring defense, first in pass efficiency defense and 11th in total defense. 4Pelini guided LSU defenses to No. 3 national finishes in total defense each of his three seasons in Baton Rouge. 4In 152 games as a collegiate coach, Pelini s defenses have posted 10 shutouts, held the opposition to seven points or less 42 times and to 20 points or less 95 times. Husker Staff Has Only One Change for 2014 Season Pelini had just one change in his full-time coaching staff during the offseason. Charlton Warren joined the Huskers as secondary coach after spending the past nine seasons at Air Force, including the past two years as defensive coordinator. Warren worked directly with the defensive backs all nine years with the Falcons. He also earned a reputation as the Falcons top recruiter and coordinated Air Force s recruiting efforts from 2006 to Warren joined a defensive staff led by John Papuchis, who enters his third season as defensive coordinator and seventh year overall on the Husker staff. Ross Els in his fourth season as the linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator, while defensive line coach Rick Kaczenski enters his third year at Nebraska. On offense, Tim Beck is in his fourth season as offensive coordinator and seventh season overall on Pelini s staff. The Fighting Illini posted a 3-1 record in non-conference play, suffering their only loss at Washington on Sept. 13. Offensively, Illinois boasts one of the nation s top passing attacks. The Illini rank 19th nationally with an average of passing yards per game while completing 66.2 percent of their passes. Illinois averages only rushing yards per game, as nearly 60 percent of the Fighting Illini s total plays have been passes. Wes Lunt is completing 65.8 percent of his passes for 1,237 yards and 11 touchdowns. He ranks eighth nationally in passing touchdowns and ninth in passing yards per game. Series History Nebraska leads the all-time series with Illinois, The Huskers are hosting the Fighting Illini for the second straight season, and Nebraska owns a 6-1 advantage in Lincoln, including a 2-1 edge inside Memorial Stadium. The teams met as conference foes for the first time last season, when the Huskers ran to a victory. Ameer Abdullah rushed for a then-career-high 225 yards in the win, as Nebraska totaled 335 rushing yards and 521 total yards. Illinois Coach Tim Beckman Tim Beckman is in his third season at Illinois, where he owns a 9-19 record. The Fighting Illini have shown improvement each season under Beckman. Illinois was just 2-10 in Beckman s first season in 2012, but the Illini doubled their win total with a 4-8 record in Illinois has nearly matched last year s win total with a 3-1 record entering tonight s game. Nebraska competed in the Legends Division the past three seasons, including winning the divisional title in With the addition of Maryland and Rutgers to the Big Ten, the conference once again has a new divisional alignment. The victory was NU s 29th consecutive season-opening win, five better than Florida s 24 straight wins in a season opener. Nebraska has scored at least 37 points in each of its seven season openers under Coach Bo Pelini, and has scored 40 or more points in 21 of the past 29 seasons. During the win streak, NU has limited opponents to 14 points or less 19 times and has won 28 of the 29 games by nine points or more. 5,000/3,000/2,000 Seniors Ameer Abdullah and Kenny Bell have been linked throughout their Nebraska careers as leaders and playmakers for the Husker offense. Fittingly, the duo hit some significant milestones on the same afternoon in the season opener against Florida Atlantic. 4 Abdullah cracked the 5,000-yard mark in career all-purpose yardage with a 241-yard effort. He has continued to pile up all-purpose yards throughout the season and now has 5,762 career all-purpose yards to pass 1972 Heisman winner Johnny Rodgers (5,586) and move to the top of the NU career chart. 4 Abdullah s 232 yards rushing against Florida Atlantic were a career high and his second 200-yard game in his NU career. The total also pushed him past 3,000 career rushing yards, joining seven other Huskers. After his third career 200-yard game against Miami, Abdullah now has 3,602 career rushing yards to rank third in school history. 4 Bell recorded his fourth career 100-yard receiving game with four catches for 116 yards vs. FAU, including a 63-yard reception. Bell has increased his career total to 2,185 receiving yards, becoming the third Husker to reach 2,000 career receiving yards, joining Johnny Rodgers (2,479) and Nate Swift (2,476). Bell Poised to Move to Top of NU Receiving Lists Receiver Kenny Bell has been a regular in the starting lineup the past four seasons and is in position to break the Husker career records for receptions and receiving yards. In the season opener, Bell showed his play-making ability catching four passes for 116 yards, including a 63-yard reception. The 100-yard outing marked the fourth of Bell s Nebraska career. Bell had one catch against McNeese State before leaving with a groin injury, but returned with a strong outing at Fresno State. Bell had five catches for 84 yards against the Bulldogs, including a 37-yard catch. Against Miami, Bell helped set the tone for the Nebraska offense, hauling in a 40-yard TD reception in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7. He finished the night with four receptions for 70 yards. With his four catches, Bell increased his career receptions total to 148, and he continues to close in on the top spot on the NU career receptions list. Bell is 18 receptions behind career leader Nate Swift, who had 166 career catches. Bell is also poised to challenge the career receiving yardage record. His 2,185 career receiving yards rank third in school history, and he is 294 yards from Johnny Rodgers school-record 2,479 career receiving yards. 4 Bell has led Nebraska in receptions for each of the past three seasons, becoming the first player to do so since Matt Davison from 1998 to In 2014, Bell could become the first player in school history to lead the team in receptions for four straight seasons. 4 Bell has topped 50 receptions each of the past two years and could become the first player in Nebraska history with three seasons of 50 or more receptions. 4 Bell has 16 career TD catches to rank in a tie for third in school history. Bell has a knack for the big play. Each of his last 14 touchdown receptions have covered at least 20 yards, including both of his TD receptions in Bell s four 100-yard receiving games ranks in a tie for fifth in school history. 4 Bell was also a strong threat in the kickoff return game in He averaged 26.5 yards per return, highlighted by a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown at Penn State. Bell ranked first in the Big Ten and 18th nationally in yards per kickoff return. 4 Bell had a standout sophomore season with 863 receiving yards, the fourth-highest single-season total in NU history and the most by a Husker sophomore. 4 Bell had a streak of 23 straight games with a catch end at Iowa in 2012, the third-longest streak in NU history. Since not having a catch in that game at Iowa, Bell has at least one catch in 19 straight games, giving him at least one reception in 42 of the past 43 games. 4 Bell reached the 1,000-yard career receiving mark in 20 games, making him the second-fastest Husker to reach that mark. Only Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers reached 1,000 career receiving yards in fewer games. Bell hit 2,000 career yards in his 41st career game. The 6-1, 185-pound Bell earned honorable-mention All-Big Ten accolades in 2013 after he was a second-team choice as a sophomore in Armstrong Continuing Winning Ways in 2014 Nebraska sophomore quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. is off to a strong start in 2014, showing the ability to hurt opposing defenses with both his arm and legs. Armstrong bettered his career high in total offense each of the first two weeks, first rolling up 333 yards of total offense against Florida Atlantic, followed by 373 yards against McNeese State. 4 Armstrong again surpassed 300 yards of total offense at Fresno State, passing for 260 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 65 yards. Armstrong became the first Nebraska quarterback since Joe Ganz in 2008 to account for 300 yards of total offense in three straight games. 4 Armstrong s average of total offensive yards per game ranks second in the Big Ten and 21st nationally. 4 Armstrong posted the top three passing yardage games of his NU career in the first three weeks. He opened with 271 yards against Florida Atlantic, followed by a 242-yard effort against McNeese State, and the 260 yards and a career-high three touchdowns at Fresno State. 4 Armstrong has increased his career passing yardage total to 1,852 yards and has moved into the top 20 on the NU career passing list. He is 148 yards from becoming the 19th 2,000-yard passer in school history. 4 Armstrong has looked very sharp in the running game. Against McNeese State, he rushed 11 times for a career-high 131 yards, the first 100-yard effort by a Husker quarterback since Taylor Martinez in the 2012 Big Ten Championship Game. Nebraska had four scoring plays of at least 50 yards, including two rushes, a passing touchdown and a punt return for a score. 4 Tommy Armstrong Jr. connected on a 70-yard TD pass to Jordan Westerkamp on the game s third play from scrimmage. The catch was the longest of Westerkamp s career, and it was also Armstrong s longest pass in a regular-season game. 4 Ameer Abdullah had a 57-yard first-quarter touchdown run, marking a season long rush for the Heisman candidate. 4 Imani Cross 62-yard touchdown run was a career-long rush for the junior, bettering a 51-yard TD last season vs. Michigan State. 4 De Mornay Pierson-El returned a second-quarter punt 86 yards for a touchdown. It was the longest ever punt return by a Nebraska freshman, and the seventh-longest punt return in school history. Through four games, the Huskers are allowing an average of yards per game to rank sixth in the Big Ten and 31st nationally. 4The Blackshirts have excelled against the pass, allowing opponents to complete just 51.6 percent of their passes, the fourth-best mark in the Big Ten. Nebraska ranks 17th in the nation in pass efficiency defense and is fourth in the Big Ten in passing yards allowed per game. 4The Blackshirts play early in the season is a continuation of a strong second half to the 2013 campaign. After struggling in the season s first four games of 2013, Nebraska was among the Big Ten s top defenses in conference play. In fact, over the past 13 games, Nebraska has held the opposition to less than 350 yards of total offense seven times, including four games of less than 300 yards. 4Opponents have completed less than 50 percent of their passes since the start of Big Ten Conference play last season. No Passing Zone Nebraska s Blackshirt defense has been among the nation s best since Bo Pelini took over as head coach in Nowhere is that more evident than in the Huskers stingy pass defense. When combining defensive numbers since the start of the 2009 season, Nebraska ranks second nationally in pass efficiency defense, trailing only Alabama. When looking at passing yards allowed per game, the Huskers are third behind only Alabama and Florida. 4Through non-conference play, the 2014 Blackshirts have shown the same knack for making life difficult for opposing passers. Opposing quarterbacks have completed only 81-of-157 passes, just a 51.6 percent completion rate. 4In Big Ten Conference games last season, Nebraska led the league in opponent pass completion percentage, with Husker foes connecting on just 48.6 percent of their passes. Wisconsin was next best in that category at 52.1 percent opponent completion percentage. For all games, Nebraska ranked third in the Big Ten in opponent completion percentage at 54.1 percent. 4Nebraska led the nation in opponent pass completion percentage in 2012, and was first in the nation in pass efficiency defense in In addition to the success in passing defense, Nebraska ranks 16th in total defense over the past five seasons and is 18th nationally in scoring defense. Gregory Returns to Torment Opposing Offenses Nebraska defensive end Randy Gregory immediately showed he was one of the Big Ten s top newcomers in By season s end, Gregory reached another level and was one of the nation s top overall defenders. Gregory was a first-team All-Big Ten choice for his play and was also named the Nebraska Team Defensive MVP in his first season in the program. He is in line to contend for national honors in The 6-6, 245-pound Gregory was limited in the first three games, but returned in full force against Miami. Gregory played a few snaps in the season opener before leaving for the day with a minor knee injury. Gregory had a procedure on the knee on Aug. 31, and missed the McNeese State, before returning in a limited role at Fresno State. Gregory had three unassisted tackles and two quarterback hurries against Fresno State, then was disruptive against Miami. Gregory had two sacks for 25 yards in losses, forced a fumble and had two hurries. He also made seven total tackles. With his two sacks against Miami, Gregory now has 12.5 sacks in 16 career games played. Gregory is just four sacks from the top 10 on the NU career sack list, and he would be the only player on the list with less than three seasons of action. Gregory led the Big Ten with 10.5 sacks for 69 yards in losses in Gregory s 0.8 sacks per game ranked 15th nationally. Gregory was at his best in conference play, with nine of his sacks coming in Big Ten action. Gregory s nine sacks in conference play were 2.5 more than any other Big Ten defender. Gregory had a season-high three sacks at Michigan and added 2.5 sacks against Purdue, with one of those resulting in a safety. Gregory had at least one sack in six Big Ten games, including five straight games from the Purdue through Michigan State contests. Huskers Look to Continue Tradition as Kicker U. Nebraska is breaking in a new place-kicker for the second straight season. True freshman Drew Brown earned the starting job after a strong fall camp. Brown has been solid through the first portion of the 2014 schedule. Brown connected on a 44-yard field goal on his first career attempt against Florida Atlantic and is 6-of-7 on the season. He has also hit 22-of-22 PAT attempts. Last year, senior Pat Smith transferred from Western Illinois and proceeded to connect on 12-of-13 field goals. Smith s success in 2013 continued a recent tradition of Nebraska boasting remarkable success in the field goal department. 4 Since Alex Henery took over as the starting place-kicker in 2007, NU kickers have connected on 128-of-149 field-goal attempts (.859). 4 Nebraska kickers in the same seven-season stretch have missed just four field goals from inside 40 yards, connecting on 81-of-85 attempts in that range, a remarkable 95.3 percent accuracy rate. 4 Eleven of the 21 field goal misses since 2007 have come on attempts of 50 yards or longer. Special Teams Off to Flying Start Nebraska made improved special teams a focus of its offseason work and the dividends have come early in NU has continued its recent tradition of being one of the nation s top kicking teams, but that is not the only area of success. 4 Junior punter Sam Foltz leads the Big Ten and ranks among the nation s leaders by averaging 47.4 yards per punt. Foltz has eight punts of 50 yards or more, while six have been downed inside the opposition s 20-yard line. 4 Behind Foltz s leg, NU ranks first in the Big Ten and fourth nationally in net punting at 45.0 yards per punt. 4 Nowhere is Nebraska s special teams improvement more evident than in the punt return game. True freshman De Mornay Pierson-El has emerged as a dangerous return threat, including an 86-yard touchdown return at Fresno State. The 86-yard return was the longest ever by a freshman and the seventh-longest in school history. It was also the longest in the FBS ranks in Pierson-El earned Big Ten Special Teams Player-of-the-Week honors for his effort at Fresno State. 4 Through four games, Nebraska has a total of 222 punt return yards, including 14 returns for 227 yards by Pierson-El. Last season, Nebraska totaled 70 punt returns yards for the entire season. Huskers Show Ability to Rally; Win Close Games Nebraska s victory over McNeese State was the Huskers latest victory in a tight game. Nebraska has now won 10 straight games decided by seven or fewer points, dating back to the 2012 season. The 10 straight wins is the longest streak in the FBS ranks. The Huskers posted a 5-0 record in 2013 in games decided by seven or fewer points, including four close wins after Nov. 1. The Huskers posted three close Big Ten wins against Northwestern (3 points), Michigan (4 points) and Penn State (3 points, OT). Nebraska also posted a three-point victory over Wyoming in the season opener, and finished the 2013 season with a five-point win over Georgia in the Gator Bowl. 4 Nebraska rallied from a 21-7 deficit for a win against Northwestern last season. That game marked Nebraska s fifth win in Big Ten play over the last two seasons when trailing by double digits. Nebraska also rallied from doublefigure deficits for conference wins in 2012 against Wisconsin (17 points), Northwestern (12 points), Michigan State (10 points) and Penn State (14 points). 4 Nebraska won six Big Ten games in 2012 and 2013 after trailing in the fourth quarter, including three in 2013 (Northwestern, Michigan and Penn State). The group includes three offensive players in I-back Ameer Abdullah, receiver Kenny Bell and offensive guard Jake Cotton. The defense is represented by cornerback Josh Mitchell and safety Corey Cooper. The players come from five different states including Nebraska (Cotton), Alabama (Abdullah), Colorado (Bell), Illinois (Cooper) and California (Mitchell). Cooper and Cotton have already earned their undergraduate degrees, while Abdullah, Bell and Mitchell are all on track to graduate this December. As a group, the five captains have combined for 119 career starts. This marks the second consecutive season Nebraska has elected season-long captains after choosing game captains during Bo Pelini s first five seasons as head coach. Abdullah is just the eighth player in school history to be a two-time team captain, including five under Bo Pelini Cotton s selection marks the ninth straight year a Nebraska native has been a captain, including five Lincoln natives. The selection of two defensive backs as captains marks the first time NU has had two captains from the same position group since defensive linemen Zach Potter and Ty Steinkuhler in Nebraska last had a pair of defensive backs serve as captains in the same year in 1999, when Mike Brown and Ralph Brown were captains. Husker Senior Class Making the Grade Nebraska has a long history of academic success, and the 2014 team is poised to carry on that tradition. Nebraska leads the nation in academic All-Americans in football with 107 all-time first- or second-team selections. Nebraska also leads the way across all sports with 314 academic All-Americans. Nebraska has had 11 academic All-Americans in Bo Pelini s first six seasons as head coach, the second-most in the nation in that time period. 4 All 14 members of Nebraska s 2014 senior class have already graduated or are on track to earn their degree by the completion of the fall semester. 4Among the group, safety Corey Cooper earned his degree in May, while linebacker Zaire Anderson and offensive guard Jake Cotton graduated in August. NU was joined by Wisconsin and Northwestern of the Big Ten, along with incoming Big Ten member Rutgers Husker Roster Represents All Parts of United States Nebraska s 2014 roster is again one of the most geographically diverse rosters in the country. The roster features players from 25 states as well as Canada. Only Army and Navy have more states represented on their 2014 rosters than Nebraska. Homestate Huskers dominate the roster with 70 players from Nebraska on the 2014 team. Texas provides Nebraska with its second-most players with 12 members of the 2014 team from the Lone Star state. Five other states have at least five players on the roster, including Illinois (7), Ohio (7), Florida (7), California (6) and Louisiana (6). Nebraska s recent recruiting classes are reflective of the Huskers national approach to recruiting. The 24-player recruiting class in 2014 represented 13 states, including four players from Louisiana and three each from Texas, Nebraska and Florida. In fact, over the past four years, Nebraska s recruiting classes have included players from 25 states, as well as Canada. 4 The Huskers have continued to make Texas recruiting a priority. Nebraska signed four players from Texas in February, marking the seventh straight year NU has had at least two players from the state. Pelini s first seven recruiting classes at Nebraska have included 37 signees from the Lone Star state. 4 Nebraska signed three players from the Florida prep ranks for the second straight year. Prior to 2013, Nebraska had never signed more than two high school players from Florida in a single recruiting class. In addition to the talented class of scholarship signees, Nebraska added 23 walk-on prospects to the program. The group of walk-ons included 20 in-state players and three out-of-state standouts. Nebraska has continued to make the walk-on program a major priority under Pelini s direction. The Husker program has added more than 130 walk-ons in seven seasons. Pelini had put 33 former walk-ons on scholarship during his first seven seasons in Lincoln. Nebraska Continues NCAA Record Sellout Streak in 2014 One of the most remarkable streaks in collegiate sports passed its 50th anniversary in Nebraska has sold out every game at Memorial Stadium since Nov. 3, 1962, and the streak now stands at 336 games heading into the Huskers Homecoming contest on Saturday night against Illinois. NU celebrated the 300th consecutive sellout at Memorial Stadium on Sept. 26, 2009, against Louisiana-Lafayette, with a then-stadium record crowd of 86,304. Notre Dame is second in all-time consecutive sellouts with 239, 97 fewer than the Huskers. Nebraska established a new stadium record for attendance against Miami on Sept. 20, with a crowd of 91,585. 13 2014 Nebraska Football Huskers.com Stanton Presented Sullivan Scholarship Redshirt freshman quaterback Johnny Stanton was presented with the George Sullivan Endowed Scholarship before the start of the Florida Atlantic game. The scholarship, presented by the Touchdown Club and friends, is named in honor of George Sullivan, who served as NU s head athletic trainer from 1977 to 1995 and as an assistant athletic trainer and head physical therapist from 1953 to Stanton, is a nutrition science/pre-medicine major, and carries better than a 3.5 grade-point average after his first year on campus. A native of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Stanton earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll each of his first two semesters in Lincoln. The scholarship was fully endowed in Sullivan s honor in 2008 by the Touchdown Club of Nebraska, Inc., and many former Husker student-athletes graciously contributed to the fund. The scholarship is presented annually to a Nebraska varsity football student-athlete who has demonstrated a high level of athletic and academic achievement, with a strong commitment to community, effective leadership skills, a high degree of integrity, and commitment to excellence in all endeavors. Preference is given to student-athletes who intend to pursue a career in a health-related field. Cross Receives Brook Berringer Scholarship Junior I-back Imani Cross was presented with the Brook Berringer Memorial Scholarship before the Miami game. It marked the second straight year Cross has been the recipient of the scholarship. A native of Gainesville, Ga., Cross has carried the ball 12 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns this season. Off the field, he was an academic All-Big Ten selection in Cross has also been active in the community, earning a spot on the 2014 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team, the 2013 Berringer Citizenship team and receiving a Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award in Cross receive the Berringer Memorial Scholarship on a night when Berringer s teammates are honored as part of the 20th anniversary of Nebraska s 1994 national championship team. Berringer played a vital role for the 1994 Huskers, earning seven starts at quarterback and throwing for a team-high 1,295 yards and 10 touchdowns, while adding 279 yards on the ground and six rushing touchdowns. Berringer was then a backup as a senior in 1995, when Nebraska won another national championship. Following his career, Berringer was preparing for the 1996 NFL Draft when he was killed in a plane crash on April 18, One of the most beloved Huskers in school history, the Brook Berringer Memorial Scholarship was created in his honor. Criteria for the scholarship includes the following: Must be a football student-athlete; must be involved in community service along with high ideals, excellent character and integrity. The group was officially inducted on Friday, Sept. 5 and honored on the field before the start of the McNeese State game. Ruud, who is now on staff with Coach Bo Pelini s program, played eight seasons in the NFL after his NU career. In addition to owning a Nebraska record 432 total tackles, the Lincoln native is part of the most extensive family tradition in Husker football, dating back to his great-grandfather Clarence Swanson in Barrett joins his great-grandfather and his father, Tom, in the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame. Russ Hochstein, a two-time first-team All-Big 12 choice as an offensive guard for the Huskers in 1999 and 2000, joins 1971 All-Big Eight offensive tackle Carl Johnson and 1982 All-Big Eight offensive guard Mike Mandelko in this year s Hall of Fame class. The Husker offense enjoyed a record-setting day with a pair of 100-yard rushers and a pair of 100-yard receivers in the same game. Abdullah finished the day with 21 carries for 232 yards and a touchdown. Terrell Newby added his first career 100-yard game, crossing the plateau with 16 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Bell added his fourth career 100-yard receiving game with four catches for 116 yards, while Westerkamp added his second career 100-yard game with career highs of seven catches for 125 yards and a touchdown. The Huskers finished with a Big Ten record 784 total yards, including 498 rushing and 286 passing. Tommy Armstrong Jr. completed 15-of-29 passes for 271 and two touchdowns, while adding seven carries for 62 yards and another score to finish with 333 yards of total offense. The Cornhuskers were facing a 3rd-and-6 with the game tied against the FCS power when Armstrong, who finished 16-for-31 for 242 yards and two touchdowns through the air, hit Abdullah, who turned the short pass into a highlight reel play. Until the catch, Abdullah was limited to just 54 yards and one rushing touchdown on 17 carries. However, he added three receptions out of the backfield for a careerhigh 98 yards. Armstrong led the Husker rushing attack with a careerhigh 131 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries to lead a Nebraska ground game that finished with 195 yards. (Sept. 13) -- Nebraska scored on four plays of 55 or more yards, rolling to a win over Fresno State. Nebraska (3-0) snapped Fresno State s 13-game home winning streak, which was the second-longest home streak in the nation. The Huskers got big nights from I-back Ameer Abdullah, quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr., wide recveivers Kenny Bell and Jordan Westerkamp and freshman punt returner De Mornay Pierson-El. Abdullah notched his 19th career 100-yard rushing game with 19 carries for 110 yards, including a 57-yard scoring run in the first quarter. Playing in front of a Memorial Stadium record crowd of 91,585, Abdullah exploded for a career-high 313 all-purpose yards, including 229 rushing yards and two scores on a career-high 35 carries. He added a three-yard touchdown reception, as he finished the night as NU s career all-purpose yardage leader Along the way, Abdullah notched his second 200-yard rushing game of 2014 to lift Nebraska to a 4-0 record.
