The Huskers enter the game with a 7-4 overall record and a 4-3 mark in conference action after an impressive victory at Kansas State on Nov. 15. Nebraska has won four of its past five games since a 3-3 start and will be looking for its best six-game finish to a season since posting a 5-1 finish in Nebraska has secured its 38th bowl trip in 40 seasons and its 44th winning campaign in the past 47 years. Colorado enters the game with a 5-6 overall record and 2-5 mark in Big 12 play. CU needs a victory to qualify for a bowl game. The Buffs were defeated by Oklahoma State in their last outing. The Series Nebraska owns a edge in the all-time series with Colorado, including a 24-8 advantage in Lincoln. Colorado ended a two-game Husker winning streak last year in Boulder and gained a 4-3 edge in the series since The current stretch was preceded by a nine-game NU winning streak from 1992 to The Coaches Nebraska: Bo Pelini (Ohio State, 90) owns an 8-4 record in his first season with the Huskers. In addition to seven 2008 wins, Pelini led Nebraska to a victory as interim head coach in the 2003 Alamo Bowl. Pelini has served as defensive coordinator at NU, Oklahoma and most recently LSU over the past five seasons. Pelini joined the Huskers after a highly successful five-year run as a collegiate defensive coordinator, including orchestrating Nebraska s defensive efforts in Pelini owns an 8-4 career record after also serving as the interim head coach in the 2003 Alamo Bowl win over Michigan State. Following his one season at Nebraska, Pelini served as the co-defensive coordinator at Oklahoma in 2004, helping the Sooners to the Big 12 title and BCS title game. He then followed with three seasons as the defensive coordinator at LSU. With the Tigers, Pelini led three consecutive defenses to No. 3 national rankings in total defense. He culminated his time in Baton Rouge by helping the Tigers to the 2007 national championship. In addition to his five seasons at the collegiate level, Pelini coached in the NFL for nine seasons serving three years each with the San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers. Pelini was a team captain and four-year letterman as a safety at Ohio State from 1987 to Pelini Brings Track Record of Defensive Success to NU While the 2008 season marks Bo Pelini s first season as a head coach, he has an impressive track record as a defensive coordinator on the collegiate level. Pelini has been a part of five straight defenses that have ranked among the nation s best units, including his 2003 defense at Nebraska. Pelini led the 2003 Blackshirts to impressive numbers. Nebraska nabbed a school-record 47 takeaways in 2003, including a Big 12- record 32 interceptions. NU finished the season second in scoring defense, first in pass efficiency defense and 11th in total defense. Pelini Looks to Build on Success of First-Year Coaches Bo Pelini is the 28th head coach in the 119 seasons of Nebraska football and is hoping to find the first-year success of several of his predecessors. Three of the previous four Nebraska head coaches (since 1962) began their Husker coaching careers with nine-win seasons. Bob Devaney posted a 9-2 record and led NU to the Gotham Bowl in That success followed six straight losing seasons by Nebraska. Tom Osborne guided the Huskers to a record and a trip to the Cotton Bowl in 1973, while Frank Solich s first squad (1998) posted a 9-4 record and played in the Holiday Bowl. With a victory over Colorado and a win in the Huskers bowl game, Pelini would match Devaney, Osborne and Solich. Pelini s 4-0 start matched Tom Osborne for the fifth-best start to a Nebraska coaching career. Cornhusker Staff Has Familiarity with Nebraska, Big 12 The Nebraska coaching staff has many faces that are familiar to Nebraska fans and observers of the Big 12 Conference. Two assistant coaches returned from Nebraska s 2007 coaching staff in offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson and wide receivers coach Ted Gilmore. However, they are far from the only coaches who have familiarity with Nebraska and the Big 12 Conference. Led by head coach Bo Pelini, every member of the 2008 Nebraska coaching staff has previous experience working in the Big 12. Pelini is one of eight full-time staff members who will enter the season with previous experience on the Nebraska sideline. 4 Three Things To Know About Friday s Game Nebraska has seven players on the roster who played high school football in the state of Colorado, including starters Matt Slauson (OL) and Pierre Allen (DE), along with Thomas Lawson (FB), Ryan Hill (TE), Adam Watson (S), Austin Jones (IB) and Aaron Gillaspie (FB). Husker assistant coaches who have served on the Buffs staff include Shawn Watson ( ) and Ted Gilmore ( ). Coordinator of On-Campus Recruiting Megan Rogers also spent last season as the Buffs director of football administration. Nebraska is looking to finish the season in a flurry similar to last year when the Huskers posted 163 points over the final three games. NU has recorded 45 and 56 points (101 combined) in the last two games and would need 62 points Friday to equal that mark. The 1998 game was the first time in modern history Nebraska has won a game without scoring an offensive touchdown. Since then, NU has scored at least 30 points against the Buffs in seven of the last nine matchups, including 51 last year in Boulder. Last year s point total was NU s most in the series since posting 69 in Lincoln in Breaking Down the Buffaloes Offense The Buffs offense has struggled at times this season and enters the contest with Nebraska ranked 91st in total offense (321.0 ypg) and 105th in scoring offense (19.2 ppg). Colorado has scored 18 or more points just once in Big 12 play, and has been held to 14 points or less four times. Overall, CU has dropped six of its last eight games including all four road contests this season. Quarterback Cody Hawkins has passed for 1,643 yards and 16 touchdowns this year while throwing seven interceptions. Hawkins had his most productive game of the year against Iowa State just three weeks ago, hitting 22-of-29 pass attempts for 226 yards and four touchdowns in CU s last win. On the ground, Rodney Stewart has a team-high 622 rushing yards but is sidelined with an injury. In the Buffs last contest against Oklahoma State, Demetrius Sumler led the way with 86 yards rushing and a touchdown. Sumler has rushed for 186 yards on 54 carries this season. Defense Colorado has allowed 28.3 points per game to rank 82nd in the country in scoring defense. The Buffs have given up 379 total offense yards per game, including 165 rushing yards per contest. Linebacker Jeff Smart paces the squad with 103 tackles while three other Buffs have at least 80 stops apiece. Joining Smart in the linebacking corps, Brad Jones leads the team with five sacks, 11 tackles for loss and 13 quarterback hurries. Special Teams The Buffalo special teams is led by Josh Smith, who paces the return game to rank 15th nationally in all-purpose running. Smith ranked 33rd in the country in kickoff returns, averaging 25.2 yards per return, and he was 31st by gaining 10.4 yards per punt return. Overall, Smith averages all-purpose yards per game this season. In the kicking game, Aric Goodman has made 26-of-27 on PATs but has struggled in field goals, hitting just 4-of-13 attempts this fall. Nebraska and Oklahoma also squared off on Thanksgiving Day five times between 1965 and Huskers, Colorado Have History of Battling for Bowl Eligibility Colorado will attempt to become bowl-eligible with a victory in Friday s matchup with Nebraska. The Buffs come into the game at 5-6 and are hopeful of becoming the eighth Big 12 team to qualify for a bowl game. Bowl eligiblity being on the line is nothing new for the Nebraska-Colorado game. A year ago, both teams entered the game 5-6 overall and CU s victory sent the Buffs to the Independence Bowl and kept the Huskers out of a bowl game. The only other time Nebraska has missed a bowl game since 1969 came in 2004, when Colorado posted a win in Lincoln to give NU a 5-6 record. Nebraska has dealt Colorado a similar fate twice in recent years, winning in Boulder in 1997 and 2003 to keep the Buffs home for the holidays. Senior Class to Play Final Home Game Against Colorado Nebraska will honor its senior class in pre-game festivities before the start of the Colorado game. The Huskers will have 21 seniors appearing in their final game at Memorial Stadium. Most impressive has been Nebraska s ability to control the clock and keep opposing offenses off the field. The Huskers easily rank first in the conference in Big 12 games in time of possession, averaging 36:00 per game. Overall this season, Nebraska ranks second nationally in time of possession, averaging 33:29. Nebraska amassed 40:12 in time of possession against Texas Tech to keep the Red Raiders highpowered offense on the sideline. NU continued to control the clock at Iowa State, with a 37:11-22:49 advantage in time of possession. Against Baylor, the trend continued with Nebraska holding the ball for 38:37. Nebraska again controlled the clock against Kansas, holding the ball for 34:46 to keep KU s high-powered offense sidelined. 4Nebraska s 40:12 time of possession against Texas Tech was its highest possession time since having the ball for 40:38 in the season opener against Nevada last season. It also marked Nebraska s highest possession time on the road since at least 1980, and Nebraska s largest possession advantage against a conference opponent since holding the ball for 42:50 against Colorado in Nebraska has held the ball for 40 minutes or longer just four times since NU held the time of possession advantage in nine consecutive halves prior to the second half at Oklahoma. Entering the Colorado game, the Huskers have had at least 16:30 in time of possession in 12 of the past 13 halves and has held the TOP edge in 13 of the last 14 halves. 4Nebraska ran 241 combined plays against Texas Tech, Iowa State and Baylor, while those three opponents snapped the ball just 155 times. The Huskers have a 118-play advantage in seven Big 12 games. 4Nebraska had nine scoring drives of 4:00 or longer in those three games, including four against Texas Tech, three at Iowa State and two against Baylor. 4The Huskers 15-play scoring drive that consumed 8:03 of the first half at Texas Tech marked the Huskers longest scoring drive of the season in terms of both time and plays. Nebraska had seven drives of 80 yards or more in the first eight games. The Huskers added an 80-yard scoring drive against Kansas and two 80-plus drives at Kansas State. Husker Offense Also Has Quick-Strike Ability Nebraska has also shown the ability to put points on the scoreboard quickly. NU has produced 16 touchdown drives that have lasted 2:00 or less, and 15 touchdown drives of five plays or less. In the season opener against Western Michigan, Nebraska s five touchdown drives covered an average of more than 65 yards, but it took the Huskers an average of just 4.4 plays and only 1:38 to find the end zone. Against the Broncos, four of NU s five touchdown drives took less than two minutes, including each of the final three TD drives, when Nebraska found the end zone in 47, 37 and 37 seconds, respectively. Nebraska scored in four plays or less on four of its five touchdown drives, including a two-play, 74-yard scoring march on its final touchdown drive. The Huskers produced two quick-strike drives against Baylor, and posted a one-play scoring drive against Kansas on a 52- yard Roy Helu Jr. touchdown run. 8 NU Offense Productive in Red Zone Nebraska has made the most of its scoring opportunities throughout the season, most notably during Big 12 Conference play. On the year, Nebraska has converted 44-of-51 red-zone opportunities into scores, including 38 touchdowns and six field goals. The 86 percent efficiency mark ties for 34th nationally and is sixth in the Big 12 Conference. The Huskers have been even more productive during conference action. Nebraska has traveled inside the 20-yard line 34 times in Big 12 play and put points on the board on 30 occasions. The 88.2 percent success rate ranks fourth in the Big 12. Nebraska has been perfect in the red zone seven times in 11 games. Improved Run Game Making NU One of Nation s Most Complete Offenses Nebraska s recent surge in the running game has improved the Huskers to 38th nationally in rushing offense with an average of rushing yards per game this season. By improving its rushing average, Nebraska now ranks in the top 40 nationally in all four major offensive statistical categories. NU also ranks 10th in total offense, 12th in passing offense and 19th in scoring offense. The Huskers are one of just eight teams nationally to rank in the top 40 in all four major statistical categories, including Oklahoma and Texas in the Big 12. Miss Oregon State NU Offense Posting Explosive Finish for Second Straight Year For the second straight season, the Husker offense is heating up when the Nebraska weather turns cold. The Huskers prolific offense has put up impressive numbers the past two games after producing staggering totals when Joe Ganz started the final three games of the 2007 season. Last year, Ganz directed the offense to a total of 163 points over the final three games (54.3 ppg). Ganz personally had a hand in 18 touchdowns, throwing for 15 scores and rushing for three. In addition to averaging more than 54 points per game, the Huskers averaged nearly 599 yards of total offense in the final three games of With a more possession-oriented offense this season, a repeat of last year s superb statistics seems unlikely. However, in games against Kansas and Kansas State, the Huskers are nearly on pace to duplicate those impressive totals. Against Kansas and Kansas State, Nebraska put up 101 points (50.5 ppg). The Huskers scored a then-big 12 high 45 points against Kansas before posting a seasonhigh 56 points the next week against Kansas State. Nebraska has also averaged ypg in the past two games. Husker Run Game Thriving in Recent Weeks Nebraska rushed for 340 yards in its win at Kansas State, marking the Huskers best ground output in a Big 12 game in six seasons. However, the rushing success was the continuation of a recent trend for the 2008 Huskers. Over the past five games Nebraska s running game has been among the conference s best. 4 The 340 rushing yards at Kansas State were the most by a Big 12 team in a conference game this season. It also marked just the fifth 300-yard-plus rushing game for Nebraska in the past five seasons. 4 Nebraska is averaging rushing yards in the past five games (4-1) and has topped 160 yards in each of those games. In the past five games Nebraska is averaging 5.4 yards per carry, a dramatic improvement over the 4.1 yards per carry NU averaged in the first five games. 4 Nebraska ranks third in the conference in rushing in Big 12 games only at yards per game, trailing only Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. The Huskers average 4.7 yards per rush in Big 12 games to rank fourth in the conference in that category. Joe the Quarterback Senior quarterback Joe Ganz has been the man directing the Husker offense since late last season. Ganz started the final three games of 2007 and the Palos Heights, Ill., native has been outstanding since taking over the quarterback role. In his 14 career starts, Ganz has thrown for more than 4,500 yards while helping Nebraska average nearly 40 points per game. Among his accomplishments over his first 14 career starts, Ganz has: 4 Thrown for 4,502 yards and 36 touchdowns. For comparison purposes, Zac Taylor set Nebraska season records in 2006 with 3,197 yards and 25 touchdowns in 14 games. 4 Ganz threw for 3,366 yards in his first 10 career starts, the most passing yards in a 10-game stretch. That total easily eclipsed the previous mark of 2,412 yards set by Zac Taylor over the final five games of the 2005 season and the first five games of the 2006 campaign. 4 Accumulated a school-record eight 300-yard passing games, five more than previous record holder Taylor totaled in 26 career starts. Ganz s previous high in completions was 31 at Colorado last season. 4Ganz has connected on 180-of-254 passes in Big 12 play (70.9 percent) and his 69.0 overall completion percentage is well ahead of the NU record of 63.1 percent, set by Sam Keller last season. 4Ganz has 45 passes of 20 yards or more in 2008, and the Huskers have had at least seven receivers catch passes in 10 of 11 games. Nebraska has completed passes to 18 receivers, tied for third nationally in most players with at least one reception. 4Ganz had at least four touchdown passes in each of his first four starts with 19 total in the four-game period. His 19 TD passes were the most ever by a Nebraska quarterback in a four-game stretch. 4Ganz s 40 career touchdown passes are fourth on the Nebraska career list. He produced his sixth career game with three or more touchdowns against Kansas. 4His 21 touchdown passes this season are tied for second on the NU season list, four shy of Taylor s record of 25 set in 14 games in Ganz has added 248 rushing yards this season, including a career-high 95 rushing yards at Kansas State, the best by an NU quarterback in five seasons. Ganz s season total offense number is a school record and he enters the Colorado game ranked seventh at Nebraska in career total offense despite starting just 14 games. Ganz averages yards of total offense in his starts and is less than 500 yards from third place on the career total offense chart. Ganz Stacks up Well in Head-to-Head Matchups The Big 12 Conference has rightfully earned the reputation as the league with the best quarterbacks. For proof of this, one needs to look no further than the NCAA statistical rankings that show eight Big 12 quarterbacks ranked among the top 19 nationally in passing efficiency. While Joe Ganz is often overlooked among this group, his numbers stack up favorably with his more heralded peers. Ganz ranks 14th nationally in passing efficiency. Ganz has made 10 career conference starts, and he has passed for more yards than the opposing quarterback nine times. OU s Sam Bradford is the only conference quarterback to out-yard Ganz, holding a passing edge. Ganz rebounded to throw for 324 yards against Kansas, besting the 304 yards by KU s Todd Reesing, the second consecutive year Ganz has out-yarded the Jayhawk quarterback. He easily out-yarded Kansas State s Josh Freeman ( ) for the second straight season on Nov. 15. Ganz fared well individually in head-to-head matchups with Heisman Trophy contenders Chase Daniel of Missouri and Graham Harrell of Texas Tech. Ganz threw for 37 more yards than Daniel, and out-yarded Harrell by 65 passing yards. Not only do Ganz s numbers compare favorably in the Big 12, but they stand up well on the national level. Among active players, Ganz ranks third nationally in career pass efficiency rating. His rating trails only Oklahoma s Bradford and 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow of Florida. Ganz Joins Rare Company Against Aggies Ganz joined a pair of Heisman Trophy winners in the Nebraska record books against New Mexico State. The senior scored touchdowns with his feet, arm and hands, achieving a feat duplicated at Nebraska by only 1972 Heisman winner Johnny Rodgers and 2001 Heisman winner Eric Crouch. In the second quarter, Ganz was on the receiving end of Marlon Lucky s third career touchdown pass and the first touchdown reception by a Nebraska quarterback in seven seasons. Later in the quarter, Ganz had a 33-yard touchdown run on an option keeper to give the Huskers a 21-0 edge. He completed football s version of the cycle with a 35-yard scoring strike to tight end Mike McNeill in the third quarter. Ironically, Lucky nearly duplicated Ganz s feat, needing only a TD reception to join Ganz in the elite company. Rodgers first accomplished the feat in the 1973 Orange Bowl against Notre Dame, while Crouch matched the trifecta against California in Ganz is also one of three players nationally to accomplish the feat in 2008, joining James Casey of Rice (vs. Tulsa) and Arkelon Hall of Memphis (vs. Louisville). 10 Nebraska Posts Nation-Leading Numbers In Fourth Quarter Nebraska has been a dominant team in the fourth quarter, outscoring its opponents The 139 points are 26 more than the Huskers have scored in any other quarter, while the 52 points allowed are 27 fewer than any other quarter. NU s 139 fourth-quarter points were 31 more than any other BCS program as of Nov. 17, while the Huskers plus-87 point margin was also the largest of any BCS school. The only other BCS schools to outscore their opponents by 60 or more points in the fourth quarter were USC (79), Iowa (69) and Florida (60). Only two teams have outscored Nebraska in the fourth quarter Western Michigan and New Mexico State. Each team outscored NU 7-3 in the fourth quarter after NU led by at least 27 points entering the period. Kansas is the only team to score more than seven points in the fourth quarter against Nebraska (14 points). In three games (SJSU, Baylor, KU), Nebraska was leading by less than a touchdown entering the fourth quarter and went on to win each contest by double digits. The Huskers also led by 14 points against Iowa State and Kansas State, before using a big fourth quarter to win each game by 28. Huskers Winning Third-Down Battle Nebraska has been effective on third down on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, most notably during Big 12 Conference play. The Huskers most decisive day on third downs came in a win over Baylor. NU converted 11-of-17 third-down conversions on offense, while the NU defense shut out Baylor on third downs, as the Bears were 0-for-10 in that category. The thirddown success against Baylor allowed Nebraska to run 30 more plays than the Bears and hold a 17- minute advantage in time of possession. In Big 12 games only, the Husker offense has converted 55.0 percent of its third-down attempts to rank fourth in the conference. Overall for the season, Nebraska has convert ed 49.0 percent to rank 11th nationally. Defensively, Nebraska is second in the league in third-down defense in Big 12 games, allowing opponents to convert 25-of-78 (32.1 percent). For the season, Nebraska opponents have converted 35.0 percent on third downs. Nebraska allowed Kansas State to convert just 2-of-13 third downs last time out. In the last five games NU opponents have converted just 23 percent on third down. NU Truly One of America s Teams Nebraska has relied on recruiting the entire nation for a number of years and its current roster reflects that tradition. The Huskers have players from 25 states on their current roster. The NU roster is one of the most geographically diverse in the country. Just three schools have more states represented on their 2008 roster. Swift leads the team with 54 catches for 899 yards, an average of 15.5 yards per catch. He also leads the team with eight touchdown receptions. Despite being in a conference with several highly regarded receivers, Swift has made a strong case for post-season recognition. In Big 12 games only, he ranks seventh in the league in receptions per game and fifth in receiving yards per game. Swift is one of only five receivers in the conference with three or more 100-yard receiving games in Big 12 play. The Hutchinson, Minn., native enjoyed a recordsetting day in the Huskers win over Baylor. Swift had a career-high 11 receptions for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns. In the process, he moved to the top of the Nebraska career receptions list. Swift has 161 career catches, bettering the previous record of 143 by 1972 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers. Swift broke the record on a nine-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter to give NU a edge. He added a second TD in the fourth quarter to give the Huskers a cushion. The record-setting day against Baylor is just part of an impressive senior season for Swift, who is often overshadowed in a conference full of standout receivers. 4Swift caught seven passes for 111 yards and a touchdown in the victory over Kansas. The outing marked Swift s eighth career 100-yard game, second in school history behind Rodgers 10. Swift has four 100- yard games this season, including three of the past five games. The duo has combined for double-figure catches six times in 2008, while totaling a combined 100 receiving yards or more 10 times in 11 games. Peterson is second on the team with 54 receptions for 646 yards and three touchdowns. His 54 receptions are fifth on the NU single-season chart, while his yardage total ranks eighth. The Grand Island, Neb., native has hauled in 39 receptions in seven Big 12 games, including a career-high eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown at Texas Tech. His touchdown tied the game at in the waning moments and forced overtime. Peterson has caught at least three passes in every game this season and has topped 50 receiving yards seven of the past eight games. Like Swift, Peterson continues to shoot up the career receiving charts. Against Kansas State he became the fifth player in school history to top the century mark in receptions and he enters the Colorado game with exactly 100 career catches. His 1,462 career receiving yards are fourth in school history and he has 12 career touchdown catches. The 6-4, 215-pound Peterson began his career on academic scholarship and as a walk-on football player, but was awarded a scholarship before the 2006 season. He is a three-time academic All-Big 12 pick and a strong contender for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors this fall. Earlier this month, he was one of three Huskers named to the Academic All-District VII team, putting his name on the national ballot. Additionally, Peterson is a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy for the second straight season. The award is given annually to the college football player who best combines excellence on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Husker Passing Game Spreading the Wealth Swift and Peterson are not the only receiving targets for Joe Ganz in the passing game. In fact, Nebraska ranks among the nation s best offenses at spreading the football. Eighteen Huskers have caught passes this season, the third-highest total of any school in the country. In each of the first 10 games, Nebraska had at least seven receivers catch a pass in the game. 4Against Kansas State, Niles Paul caught three passes to increase his season total to 20 receptions. Paul became the seventh Husker with at least 20 receptions this season, joining Swift, Peterson, tight end Mike McNeill (26), receiver Menelik Holt (25) and I-backs Marlon Lucky (22) and Roy Helu Jr. (20). 4The seven receivers with at least 20 receptions is a Nebraska best. Previously, Nebraska had five players with 20 or more receptions in both 2005 and The NU record for most players with 30-plus receptions in a season is four (2006 and 2007). 4The tight end position has been quite productive this fall, producing a combined 41 receptions for 521 yards and seven touchdowns. 4Sophomore tight end Mike McNeill is within reach of the NU record for season receptions by a tight end. Johnny Mitchell holds that mark with 31 receptions in McNeill s 26 catches are the most since Mitchell s position record total 17 years ago. McNeill s five touchdown catches are two TD catches shy of the NU position record and the most by a Husker tight end since Tracey Wistrom also had five touchdown catches in McNeill s 345 receiving yards in the most by a Nebraska tight end in five seasons (Matt Herian, 484 yards, 2003). Say Helu to Roy Sophomore I-back Roy Helu Jr. has put together outstanding games each of the past three weeks, pacing a re-energized Nebraska running game. Against Oklahoma, Kansas and Kansas State, the California native has shown his ability to be a future star in the Husker offense, totaling 344 yards and five touchdowns on 45 carries, an average of 7.6 yards per tote. Helu rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries at No. 4 Oklahoma. The rushing total is the third-highest in a Big 12 Conference game this season. Helu enjoyed another standout effort against the Jayhawks, rushing for 115 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, while adding career bests in the receiving department with eight receptions for 61 yards. Helu produced his touchdowns (10 and 52 yards) on consecutive Nebraska offensive plays in the second half, turning a NU deficit into a advantage. The back-to-back 100-yard rushing outings marked the first time a Husker back has accomplished that feat in conference play in two seasons. Brandon Jackson topped the century mark in consecutive games against Oklahoma State and Missouri in 2006, on his way to All-Big 12 honors. Helu added a pair of first-half touchdowns in Nebraska s victory at Kansas State and sparked an NU rushing attack that gained a season-high 340 yards on the ground. Helu leads Nebraska with 638 rushing yards this season, while averaging an impressive 6.7 yards per carry. If Helu were to finish the season averaging 6.7 yards per attempt, it would be the best per carry average by a Husker in seven seasons. Lucky finished 31st nationally in all-purpose yards, averaging yards per game. His 1,743 all-purpose yards were seventh in NU history and the most by a Husker since Ahman Green in Lucky continues to make a dent in the NU record books. Against New Mexico State, Lucky recorded his eighth career 100-yard rushing game with 103 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. On a career-long 58-yard run in the third quarter, Lucky became the 24th player in school history to surpass 2,000 career rushing yards. He now ranks 17th with 2,393 career rushing yards. The North Hollywood, Calif., native continues to be a dual threat. He has caught 22 passes for 275 yards and a touchdown in 2008, including a seven-catch, 80-yard effort at Texas Tech. He added a career-long 69-yard catch in the second half against Baylor, Nebraska s longest play from scrimmage this season. Lucky has 131 career catches to rank fourth on the NU career list. This season Lucky has pushed his career all-purpose yardage total to 4,244 yards, good for fourth in NU history, trailing only Heisman Trophy winners Johnny Rodgers and Mike Rozier, along with Ahman Green. He is 36 yards from matching Green s total of 4,280 yards. Against Iowa State, Lucky rushed for a pair of touchdowns, including one on a direct snap. He has a team-high seven rushing touchdowns in 2008, along with one receiving touchdown. Lucky has 22 career rushing touchdowns and four touchdown receptions. He has also thrown for four touchdowns on six career pass attempts. This season he has a 20-yard touchdown pass to Joe Ganz against New Mexico State and a four-yard TD pass to tight end Mike McNeill against Kansas. The pass to McNeill came after a direct snap to Lucky. Blackshirts Return to Husker Practice Field One of the most detailed stories throughout the 2008 season has been the awarding, or lack thereof, of coveted Blackshirt practice jerseys. The jerseys have been a fixture on first-team defenders at Nebraska practices since the mid-1960s. However, head coach Bo Pelini did not award those jerseys until the week following Nebraska s victory over Kansas, when NU recorded a season-high five sacks. Ten Huskers have since been awarded Blackshirts, including defensive ends Pierre Allen, Zach Potter and Clayton Sievers; defensive tackles Ty Steinkuhler and Ndamukong Suh; linebackers Phillip Dillard and Tyler Wortman; and defensive backs Larry Asante, Eric Hagg, Armando Murillo and Anthony West. In the first game after Blackshirts were awarded, Nebraska s defense limited Kansas State to 247 yards and produced four sacks. The Kansas and Kansas State games marked the first time since 2005 that Nebraska has had four or more sacks in back-to-back games. Husker Defense Continuing to Strive for Play-Making Ability One of the hallmarks of Bo Pelini s defenses has been play-making ability. Nebraska has flashed the ability to be a disruptive defensive unit in 2008, but is still striving to be much more disruptive in its final two games. The Huskers have made steady progress in several areas throughout the 2008 season. 4Nebraska has 25 sacks in 10 games. Nebraska had a season-high five sacks for 42 yards in the victory over Kansas, the most sacks by Nebraska since posting five against Auburn in the 2007 Cotton Bowl. NU added four sacks at Kansas State. This season, NU had four sacks against Western Michigan and KSU, three each against New Mexico State and Baylor, and two each against San Jose State, Virginia Tech and Iowa State. Nebraska has nearly doubled last season s sack total of 13. 4Nebraska held Western Michigan to just eight yards rushing. The rushing total was the lowest by a Nebraska opponent since Maine had -6 yards rushing in the 2005 season opener. Nebraska is allowing rushing yards per game this season and held K-State to just 59 rushing yards. 4Iowa State s 218 total yards were the fewest allowed by Nebraska in 19 games. The 2008 season marks the 27th straight season Nebraska has had a winning non-conference record, dating back to a 2-2 record in Since 1981, the Huskers have lost either one (11 times) or zero (16 times) non-conference games. The loss to Virginia Tech was just the Huskers third non-conference home loss since Nebraska held Baylor scoreless in the second half in a win in Lincoln. The game marked the first time Nebraska blanked an opponent after halftime since last year s opener vs. Nevada. 4Nebraska limited Iowa State to 113 passing yards, with a long pass play of 16 yards. The passing total was the lowest by a Husker opponent since Texas A&M threw for 100 yards in Lincoln last season. It marked the first time in 31 games since the Nicholls State game in 2006 that Nebraska has not allowed a pass of 20 yards or more. 4Baylor passed for 134 yards against Nebraska. The back-to-back games with less than 150 passing yards allowed is the first time a Nebraska defense has accomplished that feat since the Huskers held the first three opponents of 2007 to less than 150 yards each. Four 2008 opponents have been held to less than 200 yards passing. 4NU has 11 takeaways this season. Nebraska ended a 15-quarter drought without a takeaway with a pair of fumble recoveries in the final 16 minutes at Iowa State. Nebraska forced just one turnover in the final seven games of last season, and had just 11 takeaways the entire season. With only 11 takeaways, Nebraska ranks 110th nationally in turnover margin at -1.1 per game. Suh a Fixture in Opponent Backfields; Also Spending Time in NU Backfield Nebraska nose tackle Ndamukong Suh has received attention throughout his career for his unique name. This season it has been Suh s game that has received the majority of the attention. The junior from Portland, Ore., has made a strong case for first-team All-Big 12 honors with his outstanding play. Suh is coming off dominant performances against Kansas and Kansas State. Against the Jayhawks, he recorded a career-high 12 tackles, including 2.5 sacks and four tackles for loss. He also contributed on offense, lining up at fullback in short-yardage packages. In the fourth quarter, Suh was on the receiving end of a two-yard touchdown pass to give Nebraska a edge. The performance by Suh earned him Big 12 Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors and a Helmet Sticker from ESPN. Suh had several impressive accomplishments against the Jayhawks. 4His 12 tackles were the most by a defensive lineman since Titus Adams had 12 tackles against Kansas State in The 2.5 sacks were a career-best for Suh and the most by a Husker in 70 games (Demorrio Williams, 3 vs. Utah State, 2003) 4The four tackles for loss were the most by a Husker this season and the most by an NU defender in 38 games (Bo Ruud, 5 vs. Kansas State, 2005). Suh backed up his performance with a strong defensive effort against Kansas State, collecting five tackles, two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks, as NU allowed just 247 yards of offense. The recent performance has continued an outstanding season for Suh. He has a team-leading 65 tackles, including eight games with five or more tackles. He also leads the team in tackles for loss (14) and shares the team lead in sacks (5.5). Suh s 5.9 tackles per game leads all Big 12 defensive linemen, 1.6 more than the player who is second on that list. In Big 12 play, Suh s per-game average increases to 6.6 per game, and he ranks third among all Big 12 players regradless of position in tackles for loss per game. Suh s 65 tackles are the most by an NU defensive lineman since Ryon Bingham had 67 tackles in A defensive lineman has not led Nebraska in tackles since middle guard John Bell had a team-high 96 tackles in In addition to his ability to disrupt the line of scrimmage and his touchdown catch, Suh also produced a highlight reel play against San Jose State. Suh picked off a Spartan pass at the line of scrimmage and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown. Entire Defensive Front Producing Impressive 2008 Campaign While Ndamukong Suh may be providing the headlines from the defensive line, the production of the unit as a whole has been outstanding. Head Coach Bo Pelini has repeatedly referred to the unit as the strength of his defense, and the numbers back up that statement. 4Through 11 games, the Husker defensive line has produced 19.5 sacks, 47 tackles for loss, three interceptions and eight pass breakups. Last season, Nebraska s defensive front produced a total of 7.5 sacks and 36 tackles for loss. 4The defensive front produced all five sacks against Kansas. The five sacks were the most by the Nebraska defense since the 2007 Cotton Bowl against Auburn. 4In addition to Suh s interception, defensive end Zach Potter added an interception against the Spartans. That marked the first time NU defensive linemen had two picks in a game since Potter added his second interception of the season in the fourth quarter against Kansas, setting up the clinching touchdown. Potter has three career interceptions, tying the NU record for career interceptions by a defensive end (Bill Weber, , Willie Harper, ). 4Potter has 40 tackles, and is tied for Suh with a team-leading 5.5 sacks, while adding 13 tackles for loss. In addition to his key interception against Kansas, Potter tied his career high with six tackles, including 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss. Henery Among Nation s Most Accurate Kickers Sophomore place-kicker Alex Henery tied a Memorial Stadium record against Western Michigan, as he booted four field goals in the Huskers win. The four field goals, each of which came from 44 yards, not only tied the Memorial Stadium record, but ranked second all-time at Nebraska for most field goals in a game. It also marked just the second time in school history that a kicker has connected on four field goals of 40 yards or more (NCAA record is 5). The strong performance to open 2008 came on the heels of Henery s perfect kicking season in A year ago, he made all eight of his field-goal attempts, while connecting on 45-of-45 PATs. Henery suffered his first career missed kick against New Mexico State, but hit on all five PATs against the Aggies and added a 19-yard field goal late in the contest. 4Henery nailed a career-long 48-yard field goal against Virginia Tech, bettering his 44-yarders in the opener. He also hit three PAT attempts against the Hokies. 4Henery hit on a 35-yard field goal against Kansas and is now 10-of-13 on the season and 18-of- 21 in his career. His 12 straight made field goals were the most ever to start a Nebraska career and fell just five shy of the NU school record for consecutive field goals made. 4After connecting on the first 77 PAT attempts of his career, including 32 in 2008, Henery missed his first career PAT in the fourth quarter against Baylor. He is 95-of-96 in his career. 4Henery leads the team with 80 points and his 7.3 points per game is fifth in the Big 12 among kickers. The high school soccer standout showed his athleticism against Kansas, running nine yards for a first down on a fake field goal in the fourth quarter. Special Teams Striving to Provide Big Plays In addition to Alex Henery s strong kicking effort, Nebraska has had several other outstanding efforts on special teams. 4Fellow sophomore place-kicker Adi Kunalic has booted 26 of 65 kickoffs for touchbacks in The 26 touchbacks are the fifth-most of any school in the country. Last year, Kunalic delivered 28 touchbacks in 66 attempts and his 42.4 percent touchback rate was the best of any kicker in the country. In his two-year career, Kunalic has produced touchbacks on 54 of 131 kickoffs (41.2 percent). 4Entering the Colorado game, Nebraska kickers have made 133 of their last 137 kick attempts dating back to Henery s missed field goal against NMSU ended a streak of 87 consecutive made kicks by NU kickers. 4Sophomore Niles Paul provided a spark in Nebraska s win over San Jose State with an 85-yard kickoff return for a TD to give NU a lead early in the fourth quarter. Paul s kickoff return for a touchdown marked the second kickoff return for a score by Nebraska in its last four games (also Cortney Grixby vs. Kansas State in 2007). Before the two recent kickoff returns for touchdowns, Nebraska had not returned a kickoff for a touchdown since Paul s performance against San Jose State earned him Big 12 Special Teams Player-of-the-Week honors. Paul added a 69-yard kickoff return at Texas Tech. Paul recovered a fourth-quarter Iowa State fumble on a punt return, setting up an NU touchdown. He also recovered a fumbled Kansas State punt in the second quarter setting up a touchdown that put NU ahead to stay. 4Senior Nate Swift returned a punt 88 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter against Virginia Tech. Nebraska was the Big 12 leader in exhausted eligibility rates for the sixth consecutive year. NU boasted an impressive exhausted eligibility rate of 93 percent. Nebraska s exhausted eligibility rate has increased from 87 to 93 percent in the past eight years and improved 21 percentage points since the inception of the exhausted eligibility rate in Nebraska s 93 percent exhausted eligibility rate ranks one percentage point higher than Texas Tech, which ranks second in the Big 12 Conference at 92 percent. The national average for exhausted eligibility is 86 percent for Division I schools. The Husker football team s GSR score ranked near the top of the Big 12 Conference. The Huskers 78 percent rate tied with Baylor for second in the Big 12, trailing only Texas Tech. Nebraska s institutional GSR score of 76 percent ranked fourth in the Big 12. The Graduation Success Rate is an NCAA measurement that, unlike the federally mandated graduation rates, includes transfer data in the calculation. This marks the third year the NCAA has released GSR rates Husker Seniors on Track for Degrees Senior offensive guard Mike Huff picked up his undergraduate degree in communication studies this past May and is playing the 2008 season as a graduate student. Senior guard Andy Christensen graduated in August and is also in graduate school. An additional 10 members of the 2008 senior class are expected to earn their degrees following the fall semester and 23 of the 25 members of Nebraska s senior class are expected to have earned their degrees by next May. Academic All-Big 12 Selections Fifteen Nebraska players were named to the 2007 academic All-Big 12 football team, including 12 first-team selections and three second-team honorees. Nebraska s 15 academic All-Big 12 selections were the third-most among conference schools and NU s 12 first-team selections were the secondhighest total in the league. The Nebraska honorees were led by junior linebacker Tyler Wortman who posted a perfect 4.0 grade-point average during the previous year. 36 Game 1 Nebraska 47, Western Michigan 24 SCORE BY QUARTERS FINAL Western Michigan Nebraska Lincoln (Aug. 30) --- Nebraska won its 23rd consecutive season-opening victory, giving Coach Bo Pelini a victory in his debut as NU s head coach. Quarterback Joe Ganz led a highoctane Nebraska offense throughout the night, producing his fourth consecutive 300-plus yard passing game in his fourth consecutive career start. Along with way, he became the first NU quarterback to throw for 300 or more yards four times in his career. The Huskers improved to 2-0 on the season despite mustering just 315 yards against the Spartans. San Jose State s inspired defensive play kept their offense within striking distance into the fourth quarter, when Jared Strubeck kicked a 27-yard field goal with 12:17 left to pull within of the Huskers. 37 Game 3 Nebraska 38, New Mexico State 7 SCORE BY QUARTERS FINAL New Mexico State Nebraska Lincoln (Sept. 13) --- Joe Ganz and Marlon Lucky made history as the Nebraska football team cruised to a 38-7 win over New Mexico State. Ganz led the way by becoming just the third Nebraska player in history to score touchdowns by run, pass and catch in the same game. He joined Heisman Trophy winners Johnny Rodgers (1973 Orange Bowl vs. Notre Dame) and Eric Crouch (vs. California, 1999) in that prestigious group. Lucky also did plenty of damage, notching the eighth 100-yard rushing game of his career. He became the 24th running back in Nebraska history to cross the 2,000-yard mark in his career, as he reached the milestone on a career-long 58-yard run in the second half. Nebraska trailed late in the third quarter but rallied to cut the deficit to with more than seven minutes remaining, but the Huskers could get no closer. Quarterback Joe Ganz led the offense as he finished with 278 passing yards to earn as spot on the NU career top 10 chart. The Huskers watched Heisman Trophy hopeful Chase Daniel lead Missouri on scoring drives on eight of its first nine possessions in the opening three quarters to take a commanding lead. The only drive the Tigers did not score with Daniel on the field came on their final drive of the first half when they attempted a 59-yard field goal as time expired after starting the drive with 16 seconds remaining in the half. 39 Game 7 Nebraska 35, Iowa State 7 SCORE BY QUARTERS FINAL Nebraska Iowa State Ames, Iowa (Oct. 18) --- Nebraska dominated the first half and put Iowa State away in the fourth quarter, as the Huskers snapped a three-game losing streak with an impressive 35-7 win. In perhaps their best half of football of the season, the Huskers amassed 349 yards of total offense in the first half on their way to a 21-0 lead. Nebraska opened the scoring with Nate Swift s 19-yard reception from Joe Ganz with 5:27 left in the opening quarter. Swift, who had eight catches for 112 yards, became the second player in school history with more than 2,000 receiving yards, finishing the day with 2,021 career yards. Swift became NU s career reception leader on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Joe Ganz with 1:15 left in the third quarter. The catch gave NU a lead and provided the senior with his 144th career catch, moving him ahead of 1972 Husker Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers. (Nov. 1) --- No. 4 Oklahoma jumped out of the gates and never looked back, rolling up more than 500 yards of total offense while dominating the Cornhuskers in a Sooner victory. In the fourth quarter, Helu and Suh both shined. Helu rushed for 78 yards and one touchdown in the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 115 yards rushing and a game-high eight catches. His 176 all-purpose yards were also a career high, fueled by his second straight 100-yard rushing game. Suh also added a touchdown in the fourth quarter when he lined up at fullback and caught his first career pass for a two-yard TD that put NU up by 10 points with less than six minutes remaining.
