Taylor Martinez had 17 yards, Roy Helu Jr. added 11 and Rex Burkhead rushed for 14. 4Nebraska scored on its first drive and has scored on each of its three opening drives in 21. Dating back to last season, NU has scored in the first four minutes of the game in five of its last six games away from Lincoln. 4Nebraska s opening two scoring drives lasted two and three plays, and NU opened the second half with a one-play, 8-yard rushing touchdown and a four-play scoring drive. Nebraska has 12 scoring drives of five plays or less this season, including seven of three plays or less. 4Nebraska had six plays from scrimmage of 2 yards or longer, including three of its first four snaps of the game. Nebraska now has 22 plays of 2 yards or more in the season s first three games. 4Nebraska scored 56 points, marking its fourth straight game with at least points. NU had not reached points in four straight games since scoring or better in seven straight games, spanning the 27 and 28 seasons. The 56 points were the most by Nebraska in a non-conference road game since scoring 59 points at Illinois in The 5-point margin of victory was the best for NU in a non-conference road game since a 42-7 win at Iowa in Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez rushed 19 times for 17 yards and three touchdowns, and became the first Nebraska quarterback to rush for more than 1 yards in three straight games since Eric Crouch in 21. 4Martinez s 8-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was the second-longest run ever by a Nebraska quarterback (Eric Crouch, 95 yards, 21 at Missouri) and the longest ever by any Nebraska freshman. 4Martinez completed 7-of-11 passes for 15 yards and one touchdown. The 24-yard scoring strike to Mike McNeill in the first quarter was the first touchdown pass of Martinez s career. Martinez averaged 21.4 yards on his seven completions, including 25. yards on his five first-half completions. 4Senior I-back Roy Helu Jr. rushed for 11 yards on 1 carries, for his ninth career 1-yard game and his second straight. Helu had touchdown runs of 8 and 65 yards, giving him 21 career touchdown runs. He is one of 24 Huskers with at least 2 rushing touchdowns. His 65-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was a career long, bettering his 6-yard run against Oklahoma last season in Lincoln. 4Nebraska rushed for 8 yards, after opening this year with 289 rushing yards against Western Kentucky and 6 against Idaho. The three straight games with more than 25 rushing yards marks the first time NU has topped 25 yards in three straight games since midway through the 2 season. Nebraska had not rushed for more than yards in two straight games since topping yards in three straight games late in the 22 season. 4Junior receiver Brandon Kinnie s 55-yard reception in the first quarter was the longest catch of his career, and the longest pass play by Nebraska this season. Kinnie s previous career long reception was 16 yards. Kinnie finished the game with a career-high 15 receiving yards on five catches. Kinnie also returned two kickoffs for 75 yards for a career-best 18 all-purpose yards. 4Washington had just four completions and 71 yards passing, marking the third time in Nebraska s past four games the opposition has passed for 12 yards or fewer. 4Nebraska senior safety Eric Hagg intercepted his second career pass in the first quarter to set up the Huskers opening touchdown drive. The pick was the second of Hagg s career with his other coming against Texas in the 29 Big 12 Championship Game. 4Nebraska junior cornerback Alfonzo Dennard intercepted his second pass of the season in the third quarter and returned the ball 1 yards for a touchdown. Dennard s return for a touchdown was Nebraska s third pick-six of the season, NU s most since also having three picks for touchdowns in 25. NU s two interceptions gave the Huskers eight in three games, and the Huskers have intercepted at least two passes in six of the past 1 games. 4Washington s 21 points ended Nebraska s nation-leading streak of 1 straight games allowing 2 or fewer points. Pelini has helped Nebraska to at least a share of the Big 12 North title in each of his first two seasons, becoming the first coach in the history of the Big 12 to win at least a share of a division title in each of his first two seasons. Pelini took charge of the Huskers after a highly successful five-year run as a collegiate defensive coordinator, including orchestrating NU s defensive efforts in 2. Pelini picked up his first college head coaching victory as NU s interim coach in the 2 Alamo Bowl against Michigan State. Following his one season at Nebraska, Pelini served as the co-defensive coordinator at Oklahoma in 24, helping the Sooners to the Big 12 title and BCS title game. He then followed with three seasons as the defensive coordinator at LSU. With the Tigers, Pelini led three consecutive defenses to No. national rankings in total defense. He culminated his time in Baton Rouge by helping the Tigers to the 27 national championship. In addition to his five seasons at the collegiate level, Pelini coached in the NFL for nine seasons serving three years each with the San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers. Pelini was a team captain and fouryear letterman as a safety at Ohio State from 1987 to 199. Pelini Stacks up Well with Peers In guiding Nebraska to a 2-8 record in his first three seasons, Pelini put himself in some impressive company. 4Pelini is the fourth Nebraska head coach to win nine games in each of his first two seasons with the Cornhuskers. The others to reach that win plateau were Bob Devaney, Tom Osborne and Frank Solich. 4Pelini s nine victories in 28 tied for the most among 18 coaches in their first season at their respective school. Among first-time head coaches, Pelini s victory total was the best in the nation. Pelini s 19 victories in his first two seasons are second among the hiring class of 28. 4Pelini was just the eighth BCS Conference (since 1998) first-time head coach to post nine or more victories in his first season. He was just the second first-year head coach in that span to win nine games after inheriting a team with a losing record the previous year. Pelini Continues Defensive Accomplishments at Nebraska Pelini has led an amazing defensive turnaround at Nebraska. The 28 Nebraska defense was one of the nation s most improved units. In his first season, Pelini helped Nebraska finish second in the Big 12 in total defense, a year after the Huskers were 1th or worse in nearly every defensive category. Last fall, Nebraska was dominant on defense and its improvement was just as impressive. The Huskers led the nation in total defense and had the nation s best scoring defensive improvement (18.1 ppg). With Pelini s previous track record, the success of his Nebraska defenses is no surprise. 4Pelini led the 2 Blackshirts to impressive numbers. NU had a school-record 47 takeaways, including a Big 12-record 2 interceptions, and finished second nationally in scoring defense, first in pass efficiency defense and 11th in total defense. 4 Pelini guided LSU defenses to No. national finishes in total defense each of his three seasons in Baton Rouge. 4In 97 games as a collegiate coach, Pelini s defenses have posted 1 shutouts, held the opposition to seven points or less times and to 2 points or less 6 times. 4 Pelini-led defenses have 22 total takeaways, including two top-three national rankings. Staff returns intact for Third Straight Season Nebraska was long known for coaching staff continuity under Hall of Fame Coaches Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne. Third-year Head Coach Bo Pelini appears to embrace that same philosophy. NU is in its third straight season with its staff intact in 21, as all nine full-time assistants enter at least their third season on the Husker sideline. Nebraska is one of only nine schools nationally to have the same full-time coaching staff for at least the past three years, including only Baylor and Texas in the Big 12. Prior to last season, Nebraska had not had its full coaching staff remain the same from one season to the next since 21 to 22 when Frank Solich s staff was unchanged. Pelini s staff had extensive ties to Nebraska and the Big 12 prior to the 28 season. Every member of the Husker coaching staff had prior experience in the Big 12 before joining forces for the Huskers. Nebraska Coaching Staff Offense Defense Shawn Watson Off. NU has finished the non-conference portion of its regular-season schedules undefeated only twice since 22. 4With a - record, Nebraska has already clinched its 29th straight winning non-conference season. Huskers on Homecoming Saturday s matchup with South Dakota State marks Nebraska s 1th all-time Homecoming game. Nebraska won 6 straight Homecoming games from 1969 to 24. Since then, the Huskers have lost three of their last five Homecoming games. Nebraska Churning out Impressive Rushing Numbers Nebraska finds itself back among the Big 12 and national leaders in rushing offense. Through three games, NU is averaging 44. rushing yards per game to rank first in the Big 12 and fourth nationally in rushing. The Huskers opened the season with 289 rushing yards against Western Kentucky, before backing that up with 6 yards on the ground against Idaho and pounding Washington for 8 rushing yards. 4The three dominant rushing games mark the first time Nebraska has posted three consecutive 25-yard rushing games since midway through the 2 season (Missouri, Texas A&M, Iowa State). Before its back-to-back -yard rushing games, NU had not topped rushing yards in consecutive games since late in the 22 season. 4NU s 8 rushing yards at Washington were its most since 41 rushing yards in the 27 opener against Nevada. 4The three rushing efforts this season are all among NU s top eight rushing totals since the start of 24, including two of the top three. 4Both Martinez and Helu topped the century mark against Idaho, marking the first time since 26 (Iowa State) NU had a pair of 1-yard rushers. It was the 66th time in school history NU had two players rush for 1 yards. 4Nebraska went one better at Washington as Martinez, Helu Jr. and sophomore I-back Rex Burkhead all topped the century mark. The game marked the fifth time in school history Nebraska has had three players reach 1 rushing yards in the same game, and the first time it has happended since four Husker runners topped 1 yards at Baylor in 21. Nebraska already has had six 1-yard rushing games this season after having just five each of the past two years and six in 27. Huskers Showing Explosive Ability in all Phases Nebraska has posted three decisive victories in 21, and in the process has shown the ability to light up the scoreboard from anywhere on the field. Quarterback Taylor Martinez has been the headliner in an offense that has flashed tremendous big-play ability and finds itself averaging 8.5 yards per play, the second-best yards per play average in the nation. That is just one of several impressive numbers posted by Nebraska in the first three games. 4Nebraska has reached the end zone 2 times in three games. The average length of those 2 touchdown plays has been.1 yards, with nine of those plays covering at least 1 yards. 4Including a pair of interception return touchdowns, Nebraska had four scoring plays of 4 yards or more against Idaho, with each of those long scores coming in the second quarter. The four 4+-yard scores marked the first time Nebraska had four touchdowns of at least 4 yards since Nov. 2, 1996 at Oklahoma when NU also had four. 4Nebraska showed its lightning-quick scoring ability in a similar way at Washington. The Huskers opened the game with a two-play scoring drive, then scored three times in a span of less than seven minutes to open the second half, with each of those third-quarter scores covering at least 1 yards. 4Through three games Nebraska has 22 offensive plays from scrimmage of at least 2 yards. Last season, Nebraska posted 5 scrimmage plays of 2 yards or more in 14 games. 4The Husker offense has found the end zone in five-or-fewer plays on 1 of its 17 touchdown drives, including a pair of one-play scoring drives, two more two-play scoring drives and a trio of three-play touchdown drives. Nine of the 17 drives have taken less than 2: off the clock, including five touchdown drives using 1: or less. 4Nebraska s average touchdown drive this season lasts 4.9 plays and covers 62.1 yards in 2:1. The Huskers are averaging 12.6 yards per play during their touchdown drives and a whopping 21.4 yards per play in the 1 touchdown drives of five-or-fewer plays. 4The Huskers longest touchdown drive of the season came on their final scoring drive at Washington last Saturday, when it took 5:57 and 11 plays to cover 8 yards. Every other scoring drive this season has taken less than four minutes. Game 4 vs. South Dakota State 6 Nebraska Football Game Notes

Martinez Making Name for Himself on National Level Nebraska redshirt freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez has quickly emerged as a leading candidate for National Freshman of the Year, and possibly bigger honors, with his impressive start to the 21 season. In the first three starts of his career, Martinez has already made a prominent mark in the Nebraska record book and shown the poise and game-breaking ability that made him the choice in a tight three-quarterback battle for the starting job. Martinez has already accounted for the top three rushing games in school history by a freshman quarterback and three of the top 11 rushing efforts by any NU frosh. He has also accounted for at least 26 yards of total offense each week, while being efficient in the passing game by completing 28-of-4 passes. Here are a few of the highlights Martinez has put together in guiding an explosive Nebraska offense: 4Martinez has rushed for 421 yards on 4 carries, an average of 1.5 yards per carry. Martinez has seven rushes of at least 2 yards, including touchdown runs of 67, 46, 4, 2 and 8 yards. The 8-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half at Washington was the longest ever by a Nebraska freshman and the second-longest in school history by a Husker quarterback, trailing only Eric Crouch s school-record 95-yard TD run at Missouri in 21. In the past two games, Martinez has posted the two longest runs by an NU quarterback in the past nine seasons. 4Martinez averages 14. rushing yards per game to rank seventh in the nation and third in the Big 12. He is second among quarterbacks, trailing only Michigan s Dennard Robinson (186. ypg). Martinez is second among freshmen nationally in rushing, trailing San Diego State running back Ronnie Hillman (147.7 ypg). 4Martinez s 1.5 yards per rush is tops among players in the top 1 nationally in rushing. He topped that total with 157 yards on 14 carries against Idaho, before a 17-yard effort at Washington. The 157 rushing yards tie for the 1th-most ever by a Nebraska quarterback and tie for the fifth-most ever by a Nebraska freshman. 4Martinez s 127 rushing yards against Western Kentucky were the most by an NU quarterback in an opener since Tommie Frazier s 1-yard effort against West Virginia in The three straight 1-yard rushing games marks the first time a Nebraska quarterback has topped the century mark in three straight games since Eric Crouch in 21. His 127 rushing yards in the opener marked the first 1-yard rushing day by a Nebraska quarterback since Jammal Lord had 19 yards against Texas A&M in 2. 4The last time a Husker quarterback ran for more yards than Martinez s opening three games was Lord s 24- yard effort against Texas on Nov. 2, 22--a span of 94 games. 4Martinez was the first NU freshman QB to top 1 yards on the ground since redshirt freshman Eric Crouch rushed for 18 yards at Kansas State in Martinez s 157 yards against Idaho are the most by any Nebraska freshman since DeAngelo Evans rushed for 168 yards at Kansas State in Martinez has rushed for eight touchdowns in the season s first three games, including three each against Western Kentucky and Washington. It marked the second straight season an NU player has rushed for three touchdowns in the season opener. Roy Helu Jr. scored three rushing touchdowns against Florida Atlantic last season. 4Martinez is the first player to have two games with three rushing touchdowns in a season since Eric Crouch also had two games with at least three touchdowns in his Heisman winning season in 21. Martinez s effort at Washington also marked the first time a Nebraska player has scored three touchdowns on the road since freshman I-back David Horne had four rushing touchdowns at Texas A&M in 22. 4The 67-yard touchdown run against Idaho in week two was, at the time, the longest run by a Nebraska quarterback since Eric Crouch had a 7-yard run at Colorado in 21. It was also the longest run by any NU player since Cory Ross had an 86-yard touchdown run against Missouri in 24. 4Martinez s 421 rushing yards already ranks eighth on the Nebraska freshman season rushing chart. Through three games, the Huskers have caused major problems for opposing passers, including highly rated prospects Nathan Enderle of Idaho and Jake Locker of Washington. 4 Nebraska opponents are completing 45.7 percent of their pass attempts, including a 4-of-2 effort by Washington s Jake Locker. The 45.7 percent completion rate is fourth nationally. Opponents have thrown for three touchdown passes through three games this fall. Last season, NU opponents completed 47.8 percent of their passes (No. 4 in nation), and NU allowed just seven passing TDs (second-fewest nationally). 4Nebraska has eight interceptions this season, including seven in the past two weeks. The eight picks are tied for second nationally. All six players who see the most extensive action have produced big plays and played a key role in the shutdown ability of the Cornhusker secondary. Senior cornerback Prince Amukamara was the most recognizable name coming into the season after earning his share of honors last fall and putting his name on many preseason All-America teams. A first-tem All-Big 12 pick in 29, Amukamara is regarded as the cornerstone of a deep and veteran Nebraska secondary. In the season s first three games, Amukamara has shown why he earned the preseason hype, but ironically he is the only player among NU s top seven defensive backs who has not picked off a pass in 21. Despite not picking off a pass, his lockdown ability has been a key part of Nebraska defenders recording eight picks in three games. Amukamara has made 1 tackles, while posting a team-high four pass breakups, with at least one in each game. He had a pair of breakups in the win over Idaho, marking his fifth game in the past two seasons with multiple pass breakups. His first PBU against the Vandals deflected into the air and was intercepted by P.J. Smith--the first of five NU picks in the game. The 6-1, 25-pounder has 18 career pass breakups and is poised to make a move into the career top 1 on that list. Game 4 vs. South Dakota State 8 Nebraska Football Game Notes

Rodriguez played a signifcant number of snaps at guard throughout the contest, Enunwa had one catch for 1 yards and Evans had an unassisted tackle. Rodriguez is just the eighth true freshman offensive lineman to play at Nebraska and the first since 26. Rodriguez is the first true freshman offensive lineman to play in a season opener since Toniu Fonoti and John Garrison each appeared in the 1999 season opener against Iowa. First-Time Starters Seven NU players made their first career starts against Western Kentucky, most notably redshirt freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez, the first redshirt or true freshman QB ever to start a season opener for Nebraska. Joining Martinez on offense in making their first starts were center Mike Caputo and left tackle Jeremiah Sirles. Defensively, Nebraska s first-time starters included defensive tackle Baker Steinkuhler, defensive end Cameron Meredith and linebackers Alonzo Whaley and Lavonte David. He also has nine tackles and a breakup. 4Senior safety DeJon Gomes has been a turnover machine during his Nebraska career. Gomes has had a hand in nine turnovers in the past 1 games, including five interceptions and four fumbles caused. Gomes had a fumble caused in the opener against Western Kentucky, then picked off an Idaho pass and returned it 4 yards for a touchdown. Gomes also ranks second on the team with 21 tackles. 4Senior Eric Hagg is Nebraska s nickel back. Hagg recorded his second career interception on Washington s first pass attempt of the game, setting up the Huskers opening score. He also had two breakups in the game and his three PBU this season is second on the team. Hagg earned Big 12 Co-Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors for his effort. 4Senior safety Rickey Thenarse has returned in style from a season-ending knee injury in 29. Points at a Premium vs. Huskers The 21 Husker defense has lofty goals, and also has a tough act to follow after an impressive 29 effort. The 29 NU defense finished first nationally in scoring defense at 1.4 points per game. Nebraska held seven foes to single digits and eight teams to 1 or fewer points, with both totals leading the nation. Nebraska posted two shutouts for the first time since 2. This season, Nebraska has allowed 48 points in three games (16. ppg). 4Nebraska s 1.4 points per game allowed last season were the fewest since the 1984 Nebraska defense also led the nation by allowing just 9.5 points per game. NU had not allowed fewer than 15 points per game since 2. 4NU allowed just 25 trips into the red zone by its opponents, the second-fewest red-zone chances in the nation. Only 11 of those drives ended in touchdowns and Nebraska s 64 percent rank in red zone defense was the nation s best. Nebraska allowed eight red-zone drives in 21. 4The Huskers had a streak of 11 straight quarters without allowing an offensive touchdown in 29 and allowed only 1 offensive touchdowns in eight Big 12 games. 4Nebraska allowed a touchdown in the fourth quarter against Western Kentucky, ending a streak of nine straight quarters without allowing a touchdown. It also ended a streak of 1 straight quarters of not allowing a touchdown at Memorial Stadium. 4Nebraska held 1 of 14 opponents to 2 or fewer points last season. To put that accomplishment in perspective, NU held just six opponents to less than 2 points in 27 and 28 combined. 4By holding Western Kentucky to 1 points and Idaho to 17, the Blackshirts ran their streak to 1 games of allowing the opposition 2 or fewer points. That streak ended at Washington, but just barely as the Huskies managed 21 points, despite gaining less than yards. Only five Nebraska opponents have scored as many as 17 points since the start of the 29 season. Blackshirts Boast Amazing Improvements over Past Two Seasons Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini, defensive coordinator Carl Pelini and a strong defensive staff have led one of the most remarkable turnarounds in college football in recent years. As impressive as the progress was in 28, the Blackshirts made even larger strides as a unit in 29. 4Two seasons after ranking 116th nationally in scoring defense (7.9 ppg), NU led the nation in that category at 1.4 points per game. NU allowed 28.5 points per game in 28 and its 18.1 ppg improvement last fall easily led the nation. Nebraska s 79-spot move from 8th nationally in total defense in 28 to first in 29 was also the nation s best. He broke out against Idaho with 2.5 sacks for yards and four tackles for losses, totaling 2 yards. Crick is the team leader in both of those categories and also paces the defense with four quarterback hurries. Crick has pushed his career sack total to 12, just two shy of the Nebraska career top 1. In 29, Crick pushed Ndamukong Suh for team statistical leads in tackles, sacks and tackles for loss all season. Crick finished with 7 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, 16 quarterback hurries and two fumble recoveries. Crick had one of the most prolific defensive days in school history with a record-setting performance at Baylor. 4Crick had a school-record five sacks for 24 yards in the game. His five sacks were the most in a single game by any player in the nation in 29, just ahead of Suh s 4.5 sacks against Texas. 4Crick had seven tackles for loss, tying the NU school record also held by Jim Skow (1985 vs. Missouri) and Suh (29 vs. Texas). The seven TFLs by Crick and Suh were three more than any other Big 12 player in 29. 4Crick earned Big 12 and national defensive player-of-the-week honors for his performance, before going on to first-team All-Big 12 honors. Crick s 5.2 tackles per game ranked second only to Suh among Big 12 defensive interior linemen. Backs Making Most of Touches Nebraska quarterbacks and I-backs made the most of their offensive touches in the first two games. The explosive Nebraska offense has had just 58, 59 and 65 snaps, respectively, in the first three games, but plenty of players have taken advantage of their opportunities to post impressive numbers. Nebraska churned out 289 rushing yards on just attempts against Western Kentucky, an average of 8.8 yards per tote, its best since the 24 opener against Western Illinois when NU averaged 9. yards per rush. Nebraska didn t miss a beat against Idaho, again averaging 8.8 yards per attempt with 6 yards on 41 rushing attempts. At Washington, Nebraska totaled 8 yards on 54 carries, an average of 7.1 yards per carry. 4Martinez averaged 18.1 yards on seven rushing attempts vs. WKU, including touchdown runs of 46, 19 and 15 yards. He averaged 11.2 yards per pop on 14 attempts against Idaho, including runs of 67, 4, 25 and 2 yards. Helu Jr. is now 17th on the career rushing list and just 295 yards from the career top 1. If he were to post a second 1,-yard rushing season in 21, he would finish fourth on the NU career list. Helu is also bidding to be the first Husker to post back-to-back 1,-yard rushing seasons since Calvin Jones in 1992 and Helu has shined against top competition and in road environments. Helu has three 1-yard rushing games in NU s last seven contests against ranked opponents and has averaged 6.2 yards per carry. In nine road games since the beginning of the 28 campaign, Helu has rushed for 921 yards on 14 carries, 6.4 yards per tote. 4Helu had a Big 12-best 12 runs of 2+ yards in 29, and 22 rushes of at least 2 yards over his past 2 games. 4Helu had three of the nine 15-yard rushing games by Big 12 players in 29, and four of the top 1 rushing efforts in the league last season. Seniors Paul and McNeill Headline Receiving Corps Nebraska returned a pair of senior receiving targets who have made an impact in the passing game over the past three seasons. Wide receiver Niles Paul led NU s receiving corps in 29, catching 4 passes for 796 yards and four touchdowns. Paul s receiving yardage total was the fifth-best total in school history and his 19.9 yards per catch led the Big 12 Conference. His per-catch average also ranked third in school history among players with at least 2 receptions and top among players with 4 catches in a season. 4Paul tied the NU school record in 29 with four 1-yard receiving games, including three in Big 12 play and against Arizona in the Holiday Bowl. His 154 yards on four catches at Kansas represented the sixth-best receiving day in NU history, while his 14 yards vs. Iowa State ranked ninth. 4Paul earned Holiday Bowl Offensive MVP honors by accounting for 27 all-purpose yards, including 12 receiving yards. He had a career-long 74-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter to cap the scoring in a - rout. 4Paul had 11 catches of at least 2 yards, with nine of those covering 5 yards or more. His 8.5 yards per catch at Kansas was the second-best single-game effort in the Big 12 in 29. 4Paul ranked second in the Big 12 in both kickoff return and punt return average in 29, and his allpurpose yards per game ranked ninth in the Big 12. 4Paul became the first Husker since Dana Brinson (1986) to lead Nebraska in receiving, kickoff return yards, punt return yards and all-purpose yards. The only other Huskers in history to lead the Huskers in all four categories in the same season are: Johnny Rodgers (197, 1971, 1972), Pat Fischer (1958) and Dick Hutton (1946). The only other Husker in history to lead NU in four offense/special teams yardage categories in the same season was Frank Solich (1964 all-purpose, KOR, PR, rushing). Paul s start to 21 has shown that he could be poised for big numbers as a senior. Paul accounted for 158 allpurpose yards against Western Kentucky, including five receptions for 92 yards and a -yard TD grab. He had two catches of at least 2 yards against the Hilltoppers, then led NU with four catches against Idaho. Paul has had at least four catches in five of his past eight games dating back to last season. Paul moved into the top 1 on the Nebraska career receptions list against Idaho, and at 74 career catches, he is poised to become just the sixth player in school history with 1 career catches. Paul s 1,16 career receiving yards are 1th in NU history, and he is less than 5 yards from moving to fourth. The 6-4, 25-pound McNeill has been a fixture in a deep group of NU tight ends the past two seasons. McNeill was second on the team with 28 catches for 259 yards last season. He also tied with Paul for the team lead with four touchdown catches. McNeill has shifted to receiver where he teams with Paul and junior Brandon Kinnie to give Nebraska one of the Big 12 s biggest and most physical receiving corps. 4In 28, McNeill set a season position record with 2 receptions, while his six touchdown receptions were just one shy of the position record. 4McNeill has 64 career catches to rank 18th on the Nebraska career list. McNeill should shatter the Nebraska career tight ends reception record of 65 by Matt Herian from 22 to 26. McNeill is 2 yards from becoming the 19th Husker and fourth NU tight end to reach 1, career receiving yards. He snared his 11th career touchdown wiht a 24-yard grab at Washington. Kinnie also has made huge strides in the offseason, and opened the year with a career-high six receptions and 59 yards against Western Kentucky, before adding three catches against Idaho. He excelled against Washington with five receptions for a career-high 15 yards. He totaled 18 all-purpose yards, adding 75 yards on kickoff returns. Behind Paul, McNeill and Kinnie, Nebraska is averaging 1.7 yards per completion this season. Henery Kicking Way Into Nebraska Record Book Alex Henery is poised to continue his assault on the NU record book this season, while challenging Big 12 and NCAA records. The senior from Omaha also emerged as one of the conference s top punters last season. Henery was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award last season and should be a leading contender for the award in 21. Henery connected on a school-record 24-of-28 field goals in 29, including three games with at least four field goals. He hit 5-of-5 field goals at Virginia Tech, the second-highest field goal total in school history, trailing only Dale Klein s school-record seven field goals in He also supplied all the scoring by hitting 4-of-4 field goals in a 1-12 loss to Texas in the Big 12 title game, and finished the year with a perfect 4-of-4 effort against Arizona in the Holiday Bowl. 4Henery has six career games with four or more field goals, an accomplishment that has already tied an NCAA record. He has 11 multiple-fg games in his career. 4Henery s 24 field goals in 29 shattered the school record, and he has made 51 field goals in 58 career attempts, making him the most accurate kicker in school history. His 51 field goals are just six field goals from the school record, held by 11-year NFL veteran Kris Brown. Game 4 vs. South Dakota State 11 Nebraska Football Game Notes

Lofty Rankings Nebraska finished the 29 season with its highest post-season ranking (No. 14 in both polls) since the 21 season. The Huskers also started the 21 season in its best poll position in several seasons. 4The Huskers were No. 8 in the preseason Associated Press Poll and were ranked ninth in the first USA Today Coaches Poll. The rankings represent NU s highest starting position since opening at No. 4 in the AP poll in 21. 4Nebraska s No. 8 preseason ranking was the first time in the top 1 at any point since being ranked 1th by the AP in October of 2 following a 5- start to the season. 4Nebraska moved to sixth in the AP poll and seventh in the coaches poll after its drubbing of Washington, the second time this season NU has reached No. 6 in the media poll. The No. 6 AP ranking marks NU s highest since entering the 22 Rose Bowl against Miami ranked fourth in the nation. 4Nebraska received one first-place vote in this week s USA Today Coaches Poll, the first time since 21 that NU has received a first-place vote in either poll. Huskers Carrying Late-Season Momentum into 21 Nebraska entered 21 with a surge of momentum after playing outstanding football late in the 29 season. 4Nebraska won six of its final seven games last fall, as it also did to finish the 28 campaign. The 6-1 second-half records the past two seasons are the school s best seven-game finishes since Nebraska is one of only 12 teams in the FBS to open 21 having won at least six of its final seven games last season. 4Nebraska s win at Washington gave the Huskers its ninth win in its past 1 games dating back to last season. This marks just the second 9-1 record in a 1-game stretch since the start of the 22 season (spanning 25 and 26 season). Only Boise State and Alabama are perfect in the past 1 games. The Huskers are looking to improve their first-half record over the past two seasons. NU opened with a - record in 28, but dropped three straight before its strong finish. Pelini-coached Nebraska teams are 1-6 in games played before Halloween and 1-2 in games on or after Nov. 1, with the only losses against teams ranked in the top four nationally. Road Warriors The victory at Washington marked Nebraska s fifth straight road win, the longest streak at Nebraska in a decade when won its final two road games in 1999 and its first three on the road in 2. Each of the five wins in Nebraska s current road win streak have been by at least eight points. Nebraska will next put its road winning streak on the line at Kansas State on Oct. 7. Nebraska won in Manhattan in 28, starting its current streak of five straight Big 12 Conference road victories. 4Nebraska is 6-2 on the road in Big 12 play under Bo Pelini. 4The five-game conference road win streak is NU s longest since winning its first eight road games when the Big 12 Conference was formed in 1996 and Nebraska won 19 straight league road games from 1992 to 1997 (Big Eight and Big 12). The 4- record in Big 12 road games in 29 was the first for Nebraska since Nebraska was one of just 1 teams nationally to own a perfect conference road record in 29. Nebraska hoping to Continue Fourth-Quarter Excellence Nebraska has been among the nation s best fourth-quarter teams each of the past two seasons. In 28, NU ranked second nationally in fourth-quarter points scored (155) and fourth-quarter point differential (+1). The 29 season was no different as NU outscored the opposition 96-2, with the 2 points allowed tying Alabama for the lowest in the nation. NU AMONG LEADERS IN ACADEMIC ALL-BIG 12 SELECTIONS Nebraska had 22 players named to the 29 academic All-Big 12 team, including 15 first-team selections, and seven second-team honorees. Nebraska s 22 honorees were the second-highest total in the Big 12 Conference. The group was highlighted by defensive back Austin Cassidy and linebacker Sean Fisher, who were each nominated with a 4. grade-point average. Fisher has a perfect cumulative grade-point average, while Cassidy earned a perfect 4. grade-point average in the two previous semesters. Fisher and Cassidy were two of just three student-athletes in the Big 12 Conference nominated with a perfect 4. grade-point average. NATION-LEADING TOTAL OF COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS Seniors Todd Peterson and Tyler Wortman were selected as second-team ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in 28. The selection of Peterson and Wortman gave NU a nation-leading total of 98 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in football. Nebraska also leads the nation in academic All-Americans with 277 academic All-Americans across all teams and all sports entering the academic year. SENIOR CLASS IN STRONG ACADEMIC STANDING Nebraska s 2-player senior class includes six players who will play the 21 season as graduate students. Among those, defensive end Tyrone Fahie graduated in December of 29 in just ½ years, while offensive lineman D.J. Jones, quarterback Zac Lee and defensive back Anthony West picked up their degrees in May. Tight end Mike McNeill and offensive lineman Mike Smith joined the group in summer commencement exercises. 4Another nine seniors are expected to complete their degree work in the fall, giving the Huskers 15 graduates in time for the bowl game. All but one member of the senior class are expected to complete their degrees by the end of the 211 spring semester. 4Among Bo Pelini s first three seniors classes, 52 of 57 players are on track to earn their degree by next August. NEBRASKA LEADS BIG 12 IN EXHAUSTED ELIGIBILITY GRADUATION RATES Nebraska athletic teams continue to pace the Big 12 Conference in the classroom, leading the Big 12 in the exhausted eligibility graduation rate for the seventh consecutive year with an impressive 94 percent rate. Nebraska continues to set the pace in the Big 12 in terms of Exhausted Eligibility graduation rates. The exhausted eligibility rate surveys the graduation rate of scholarship student-athletes in 1 incoming freshman classes who complete their eligibility at the university. Nebraska s exhausted eligibility rate has improved 22 percentage points since the inception of the rate in Sean Fisher to Be Presented Sullivan Scholarship Nebraska sophomore linebacker Sean Fisher will be presented the George Finley Sullivan Endowed Scholarship before the start of Saturday s game. Sully as many call him is admired by hundreds of former Husker student-athletes and taped thousands of ankles while serving as Nebraska s head trainer from 1977 to 1995, and as an Assistant Athletic Trainer and Head Physical Therapist from 195 to The scholarship was fully endowed in Sullivan s honor in 28 by the Touchdown Club of Nebraska, Inc., and many former Husker student-athletes graciously contributed to the fund. The scholarship will be presented annually to a Nebraska varsity football student-athlete who has demonstrated a high level of athletic and academic achievement, with a strong commitment to community, effective leadership skills, a high degree of integrity, and commitment to excellence in all endeavors. Preference is given to student-athletes who intend to pursue a career in a health-related field. Fisher suffered an injury during the fall camp and is out for the season, but was a key member of NU s defense in 29. Fisher carries a 4. cumulative grade-point average in business administration. 33 21 NEBRASKA FOOTBALL Game 1 Nebraska 49, Western Kentucky 1 SCORE BY QUARTERS FINAL Western Kentucky 7 1 No. 8 Nebraska Lincoln (Sept. 4) --- Redshirt freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez made an impressive college debut, rushing for 127 yards and three touchdowns to help No. 8 Nebraska to a 49-1 victory over Western Kentucky. Martinez, who became the first Husker freshman quarterback to ever start a season opener, made his presence known quickly, racing 46 yards on his first career carry to give NU a 7- lead just :7 into the game. Martinez also completed all four of his first-quarter pass attempts for 59 yards to help NU to a quick 14- lead. After Cody Green led the Huskers on a successful second-quarter scoring drive to put Nebraska up 21- at the half, Martinez found the end zone again on the first drive of the second half, scampering the final 19 yards on a four-play, 68-yard drive to extend NU s lead to 28-. Martinez, who averaged better than 18 yards per carry, produced the most rushing yards by an NU quarterback in a season opener since Tommie Frazier rushed for 1 yards against West Virginia in 1994, and became the first Husker quarterback to rush for over 1 yards since 2. In addition to his impressive rushing numbers, Martinez completed 9-of- 15 passes for 16 yards and did not commit a turnover. While Martinez took center stage as the starter, Green was also impressive, completing 5-of-6 passes for 66 yards while leading the Huskers on a pair of scoring drives, including a -yard touchdown strike to Niles Paul. Paul finished with five catches for 92 yards and a score, while adding one carry for eight yards. He also returned three punts for 58 yards to close the night with 158 all-purpose yards. Brandon Kinnie also enjoyed a big night for NU, hauling in a career-high six catches for 59 yards, while sophomore I-back Rex Burkhead added a pair of catches for 47 yards while rushing five times for 57 yards. Nebraska s big-play offense amassed 56 total yards on just 58 plays, an average of 9.2 yards per play. The Huskers rolled for 289 rushing yards and six touchdowns, while 11 different Huskers had at least one tote on the night. In addition to the three rushing touchdowns from Martinez and one each from Helu and Burkhead, Austin Jones closed the scoring with his first career touchdown on a five-yard burst in the fourth quarter. HUSKERS.COM Game 2 Nebraska 8, Idaho 17 SCORE BY QUARTERS FINAL Idaho No. 6 Nebraska Lincoln (Sept. 11) --- No. 6 Nebraska showed its explosiveness on both sides of the ball, scoring 28 unanswered points in a span of 8:15 midway through the second quarter to help bolt to a 1- lead and cruise to a 8-17 victory over Idaho. Quarterback Taylor Martinez (67) and I-back Roy Helu Jr. (58) scored on back-to-back runs of more than 55 yards to give NU a 14- lead. The Blackshirt defensive backs then got into the action with back-to-back interception returns for scores from both DeJon Gomes (4) and Rickey Thenarse (47). Nebraska s four consecutive scoring plays of 4 or more yards marked the first time since 1996 that the Big Red scored on four plays of 4 or more yards in the same game. The 1-point cushion was more than enough for a Blackshirt defense that intercepted five passes, recorded seven sacks and recovered a fumble on the afternoon. The Blackshirts held a high-powered Idaho offense to just 279 total yards, while the NU offense rolled up 471 total yards, including 6 rushing yards on 41 carries. It was NU s highest rushing total since a season-opening win over Nevada in 27. Martinez led the punishing Husker ground game with 157 yards and two touchdowns on just 14 carries. It was the second straight 1-yard rushing effort by the redshirt freshman quarterback. His second quarter 67-yard touchdown run was the longest run ever by a Husker freshman quarterback, surpassing a 59-yard run by former NU Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch against UAB in Martinez was joined across the century mark by Helu, who rushed for 17 yards on just nine carries, including his 58-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Sophomore I-back Rex Burkhead nearly gave the Huskers a third back in the 1-yard club, rushing for 77 yards on just nine carries. Defensively, Gomes led the Huskers with a career-best 1 tackles and a pass breakup along with his interception return for a score, while Jared Crick had 2.5 sacks for yards as part of a four tacklesfor-loss afternoon. Fellow defensive tackle Baker Steinkuhler added 1.5 sacks for 14 yards lost, while Terrence Moore, Lavonte David and Pierre Allen each recorded sacks for the Huskers.
