For proof of this, one needs to look no further than the NCAA statistical rankings that show seven Big 12 quarterbacks ranked among the top 15 nationally in passing efficiency. While senior quarterback Joe Ganz is often overlooked among this group, his numbers stack up favorably with his more heralded peers. Ganz has made six career conference starts, and he has passed for more yards than the opposing quarterback each time. Ganz fared well individually in head-to-head matchups with Heisman Trophy contenders Chase Daniel of Missouri and Graham Harrell of Texas Tech. Ganz threw for 37 more yards than Daniel, and out-yarded Harrell by 65 passing yards. Kickoff in front of the 295th consecutive sellout at Memorial Stadium is set for 11:37 a.m. with Versus televising the game nationally. The Huskers are coming off a 35-7 win at Iowa State last Saturday, allowing the Huskers to end a three-game losing streak and improve to 4-3 overall on the season. Nebraska will look to even its Big 12 record at 2-2 against the Bears. Baylor is 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in Big 12 action, following a 34-6 loss at No. 8 Oklahoma State last weekend. The Series Nebraska and Baylor meet for the first time since 2005 and Saturday s meeting is just the 11th all-time matchup between the schools. The Huskers hold a 9-1 edge in the series, including wins in each of the last eight meetings. Baylor s lone victory in the series was a 26-7 win in Lincoln in Nebraska holds a 6-1 edge over the Bears at Memorial Stadium, including four shutout victories. The Coaches Nebraska: Bo Pelini (Ohio State, 90) is in his first season with the Huskers. Pelini owns a 5-3 career record. In addition to four 2008 wins, Pelini led Nebraska to a victory as interim head coach in the 2003 Alamo Bowl. Pelini has served as defensive coordinator at Nebraska, Oklahoma and most recently LSU over the past five seasons. Previously, he had stints as an NFL assistant with San Francisco, New England and Green Bay. Baylor: Art Briles (Texas Tech, 79) is in his first season as Baylor s head coach and his sixth season overall as a head coach. Briles is 3-4 with the Bears and overall as a collegiate head coach. Prior to taking over at Baylor he was the head coach at Houston for five seasons and led the Cougars to four bowl games. Briles was an assistant at Texas Tech for three seasons ( ), and previously was a highly successful prep coach in the Lone Star State. Nebraska Football Nebraska is all-time, one of just five schools with 800 all-time victories. Nebraska has won five national championships (1970, 1971, 1994, 1995, 1997). Pelini joined the Huskers after a highly successful five-year run as a collegiate defensive coordinator, including orchestrating Nebraska s defensive efforts in Pelini owns a 5-3 career record after also serving as the interim head coach in the 2003 Alamo Bowl win over Michigan State. Following his one season at Nebraska, Pelini served as the co-defensive coordinator at Oklahoma in 2004, helping the Sooners to the Big 12 title and BCS title game. He then followed with three seasons as the defensive coordinator at LSU. With the Tigers, Pelini led three consecutive defenses to No. 3 national rankings in total defense. He culminated his time in Baton Rouge by helping the Tigers to the 2007 national championship. In addition to his five seasons at the collegiate level, Pelini coached in the NFL for nine seasons serving three years each with the San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers. Pelini was a team captain and four-year letterman as a safety at Ohio State from 1987 to Pelini Brings Track Record of Defensive Success to NU While the 2008 season marks Bo Pelini s first season as a head coach, he has an impressive track record as a defensive coordinator on the collegiate level. Pelini has been a part of five straight defenses that have ranked among the nation s best units, including his 2003 defense at Nebraska. Pelini led the 2003 Blackshirts to impressive numbers. Nebraska nabbed a school-record 47 takeaways in 2003, including a Big 12- record 32 interceptions. NU finished the season second in scoring defense, first in pass efficiency defense and 11th in total defense. Pelini Looks to Build on Success of First-Year Coaches Bo Pelini is the 28th head coach in the 119 seasons of Nebraska football and is hoping to find the first-year success of several of his predecessors. Three of the previous four Nebraska head coaches (since 1962) began their Husker coaching careers with nine-win seasons. Bob Devaney posted a 9-2 record and led NU to the Gotham Bowl in That success followed six straight losing seasons by Nebraska. Tom Osborne guided the Huskers to a record and a trip to the Cotton Bowl in 1973, while Frank Solich s first squad (1998) posted a 9-4 record and played in the Holiday Bowl. Pelini s 4-0 start matched Tom Osborne for the fifth-best start to a Nebraska coaching career. Cornhusker Staff Has Familiarity with Nebraska, Big 12 The Nebraska coaching staff has many faces that are familiar to Nebraska fans and observers of the Big 12 Conference. Two assistant coaches returned from Nebraska s 2007 coaching staff in offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson and wide receivers coach Ted Gilmore. However, they are far from the only coaches who have familiarity with Nebraska and the Big 12 Conference. Led by head coach Bo Pelini, every member of the 2008 Nebraska coaching staff has previous experience working in the Big 12. Pelini is one of eight full-time staff members who will enter the season with previous experience on the Nebraska sideline. 4 Three Things To Know About Saturday s Game Nebraska snapped a three-game slide last week with a victory over the Iowa State in Ames, avoiding NU s first 0-3 start in league play since This weekend, the Huskers will be again trying to snap a home streak. Nebraska has dropped its last two contests in Memorial Stadium (vs. Virginia Tech and Missouri) and will be trying to avoid three consecutive home losses for the first time since Special teams play could become a factor for both teams on Saturday. Nebraska has struggled this season in punting and enters the week ranked 118th nationally in net punting. The lack of kicking game may not be as much of a detriment against Baylor, which ranks 118th in the country in punt returns. Both teams are in the top 25 nationally in the kickoff return game. Baylor will be looking for its first road victory of the season as it has lost games at Oklahoma State and Connecticut this year. Overall, the Bears have lost six straight contests away from Waco, Texas. Baylor has dropped eight straight Big 12 road games dating to the 2006 season when BU defeated Colorado, 34-31, in three overtimes in Boulder. Breaking Down the Bears Offense The Bear offense has become more effective under first-year coach Art Briles as Baylor is averaging more than 28 points and 375 yards of total offense per game this season. Although it has been rejuvenated, BU s offense is still erratic as Baylor has posted at least 38 points in each of its three wins but has topped 17 points just once in the four losses. True freshman quarterback Robert Griffin has received much of the acclaim. Griffin graduated high school a semester early and went through spring football this year before joining the nationally renowned Baylor track squad. Griffin ran the third-fastest time in the event in school history. Griffin has used that speed to his team s benefit as he is second on the squad with 433 rushing yards, trailing team leader Jay Finley by just five yards. Griffin, who also leads the team with eight rushing touchdowns, has completed 94 passes (in 155 attempts) without an interception, an NCAA freshman record to open a career. He has 1,271 passing yards and nine touchdowns. Another freshman, Kendall Wright leads the receiving corps with 33 catches for 413 yards and three touchdowns. Only four players have at least 10 catches, as BU averages passing yards per game. Defense By allowing 366 yards per game, including more than 146 yards per game on the ground, the Bears rank 73rd nationally this week in total defense. Joe Pawelek has been a disruptive force from that side of the ball as he leads the team and ranks third nationally with 11.7 tackles per game. He owns the team lead with 82 tackles and five quarterback hurries to go with five tackles for loss and one fumble recovery. He also paces the team with two interceptions and is third on the squad with four pass breakups. Special Teams Baylor s special teams have been effective in spots this season, as the Bears rank seventh nationally in net punting and 15th in kickoff returns. Punter Derek Epperson has averaged an impressive 43.3 yards on 32 punts, placing nine inside the opponent s 20 yard line. In the return game, Mikail Baker has averaged 28.8 yards on 12 kickoff returns to rank 23rd nationally. In six Nebraska victories over Baylor in Lincoln, Nebraska has outscored the Bears by a cumulative score of , or an average of Nebraska has posted four shutouts against Baylor in Lincoln, including three straight meetings in 1990, 1996 and All six of Nebraska s victories over Baylor in Lincoln have been by at least 13 points, while all 10 of the series meetings have been decided by at least nine points. Husker Offense Looking to Continue Recent Surge Nebraska has been impressive on offense throughout the 2008 campaign, but has hit its stride over the past two games. Nebraska ranks 12th nationally in passing offense at yards per game and is 18th in the nation in total offense, averaging yards. Nebraska also ranks 27th nationally in scoring offense at 33.3 points per game. The success of the offense comes on the heels of an explosive offensive campaign in NU finished last year ranked ninth nationally in total offense at yards per game, and seventh in passing at yards per game. The passing average was a school record, while the total offensive average was Nebraska s best in a decade. Nebraska boasts impressive numbers over the past several games dating back to last season. 4Nebraska has gained 400 total yards or more in nine of the past 12 games. 4The Huskers have passed for at least 200 yards in the past 12 games, with seven 300-yard games in that stretch. 4The Huskers are averaging yards per game over their past 10 games, including yards per game through the air. The Huskers churned out 471 and 548 yards of total offense, respectively, in their first two road trips of the season, but most impressive has been NU s ability to control the clock. Nebraska amassed 40:12 in time of possession against Texas Tech to keep the Red Raiders highpowered offense on the sideline. NU continued to control the clock at Iowa State, with a 37:11-22:49 advantage in time of possession. Nebraska has run 158 plays in the last two weeks, while opponents have snapped the ball just 102 times. 4Nebraska s 40:12 time of possession against Texas Tech was its highest possession time since having the ball for 40:38 in the season opener against Nevada last season. It also marked Nebraska s highest possession time on the road since at least 1980, and Nebraska s largest possession advantage against a conference opponent since holding the ball for 42:50 against Colorado in Nebraska has held the ball for 40 minutes or longer just four times since NU has held the time of possession advantage in six consecutive halves and has had at least 16:30 in time of possession in the past five halves dating back to the second half of the Missouri game. 4Nebraska has had seven scoring drives of 4:00 or longer in the past two games, including four against Texas Tech and three at Iowa State. Husker Offense Also Has Quick-Strike Ability Nebraska has also shown the ability to put points on the scoreboard quickly. NU has produced 10 touchdown drives that have lasted 2:00 or less, and nine touchdown drives of five plays or less. In the season opener against Western Michigan, Nebraska s five touchdown drives covered an average of more than 65 yards, but it took the Huskers an average of just 4.4 plays and only 1:38 to find the end zone. Against the Broncos, four of NU s five touchdown drives took less than two minutes, including each of the final three TD drives, when Nebraska found the end zone in 47, 37 and 37 seconds, respectively. Nebraska scored in four plays or less on four of its five touchdown drives, including a two-play, 74-yard scoring march on its final touchdown drive. Ganz Joins Rare Company Against Aggies Ganz joined a pair of Heisman Trophy winners in the Nebraska record books against New Mexico State. The senior scored touchdowns with his feet, arm and hands, achieving a feat duplicated at Nebraska by only 1972 Heisman winner Johnny Rodgers and 2001 Heisman winner Eric Crouch. In the second quarter, Ganz was on the receiving end of Marlon Lucky s third career touchdown pass and the first touchdown reception by a Nebraska quarterback in seven seasons. Later in the quarter, Ganz had a 33-yard touchdown run on an option keeper to give the Huskers a 21-0 edge. He completed football s version of the cycle with a 35-yard scoring strike to tight end Mike McNeill in the third quarter. Ironically, Lucky nearly duplicated Ganz s feat, needing only a TD reception to join Ganz in the elite company. Lucky Again Adding Dual-Threat Option to Husker Offense Senior I-back Marlon Lucky had one of the best seasons by a Nebraska running back in a decade in Lucky had 1,019 rushing yards, just the second 1,000-yard rushing season by a Husker I-back since He also caught a Nebraska record 75 passes for 705 yards, shattering the previous NU record by 20 catches. Lucky finished 31st nationally in all-purpose yards, averaging yards per game. His 1,743 all-purpose yards were seventh in NU history and the most by a Husker since Ahman Green in Lucky entered 2008 as the top returning rusher in the Big 12 Conference, and continues to make a dent in the NU record books. Against New Mexico State, Lucky recorded his eighth career 100- yard rushing game with 103 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. On a career-long 58-yard run in the third quarter, Lucky became the 24th player in school history to surpass 2,000 career rushing yards. He moved into the top 20 with a 66-yard effort at Texas Tech, and is now 17th and within 451 yards of the top 10. The North Hollywood, Calif., native continues to be a dual threat. He has caught 17 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown in 2008, including a seven-catch, 80-yard effort at Texas Tech. Lucky has 126 career catches, and both he and teammate Nate Swift (136) are chasing Johnny Rodgers school record of 143 receptions. Swift Enjoying Standout Senior Season; Closing in on Receiving Record Wide receiver Nate Swift has been a key component in the Husker passing game since 2005, and he and fellow senior Todd Peterson have been Joe Ganz s favorite targets in Arguably Nebraska s most experienced player, Swift has played in 45 games with 23 career starts. Through seven games, Swift is second on the team with 33 catches for a team-high 486 yards, an average of 14.7 yards per catch. He also leads the team with four touchdown receptions. Swift is coming off an impressive performance at Iowa State, when he grabbed a season-high eight catches for 112 yards, all in the first half. The 100- yard game was the sixth of Swift s career, the secondhighest total of 100-yard games in Nebraska history. The Grand Island, Neb., native has hauled in 19 receptions over the past three weeks, including a career-high eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown at Texas Tech. His touchdown tied the game at in the waning moments and forced overtime. Peterson has caught at least three passes in every game this season and has topped 50 receiving yards each of the past four weeks. Peterson also recently cracked the top 10 on both the career receptions and receiving yards list. His 80 career catches are good for eighth on that list, and his 1,213 yards also rank eighth. The 6-4, 215-pound Peterson began his career on academic scholarship and as a walk-on football player, but was awarded a scholarship before the 2006 season. He is a three-time academic All- Big 12 pick and a strong contender for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors this fall. Peterson was recently named a semifinalist for a National Football Foundation/College Football Hall of Fame National Scholar-Athlete Award. Husker Defense Hoping to Find Play-Making Ability in 2008 One of the hallmarks of Bo Pelini s defenses has been play-making ability. Nebraska has flashed the ability to be a disruptive defensive unit in 2008, but is looking to be much more disruptive in the second half of the 2008 season. Nebraska took a big step forward in that area in a 35-7 win over Iowa State in Ames. 4Nebraska has 13 sacks in seven games. NU had four sacks for 28 yards against Western Michigan, with three vs. New Mexico State and two each against San Jose State, Virginia Tech and Iowa State. Nebraska has matched last season s sack total of 13. The Huskers had five games without a single sack in NU has eight takeaways this season. Nebraska ended a 15-quarter drought without a takeaway with a pair of fumble recoveries in the final 16 minutes at Iowa State. Nebraska forced just one turnover in the final seven games of last season, and had just 11 takeaways the entire season. With eight takeaways in the first seven games, Nebraska ranks 96th nationally in turnover margin at per game. 4Nebraska held Western Michigan to just eight yards rushing. The rushing total was the lowest by a Nebraska opponent since Maine had -6 yards rushing in the 2005 season opener. Nebraska is allowing rushing yards per game. 4Iowa State s 218 total yards were the fewest allowed by Nebraska in 19 games. Nebraska had not held an opponent to less than 300 total yards since Nevada in the 2007 season opener (185). The last time Nebraska allowed fewer yards in a Big 12 game was 212 in a 2005 win at Colorado. 4The seven points by Iowa State were the fewest by a conference opponent since a 21-3 win at Kansas State in Nebraska limited Iowa State to 113 passing yards, with a long pass play of 16 yards. However, it is far from the only bright spot for the defensive line as a whole, which has shown a much greater ability to make plays in In addition to Suh s interception, defensive end Zach Potter added an interception against the Spartans. That marked the first time NU defensive linemen had two picks in a game since Through seven games, the Husker defensive line has produced 11.5 sacks, 32 tackles for loss, two interceptions and seven pass breakups. Last season, Nebraska s defensive front produced a total of 7.5 sacks and 36 tackles for loss. 4Potter has 25 tackles, eight tackles for loss and and team-high three sacks. He made a careerhigh tying six tackles against both Virginia Tech and Missouri. Potter also has two blocked kicks this season. 4Suh has a total of 34 tackles, including eight tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. 4Senior defensive tackle Ty Steinkuhler had a career-high eight tackles against Western Michigan and has 33 total stops. He finished the 2007 season with 13 total tackles and had 40 career tackles entering Sophomore defensive end Pierre Allen had a career-high 10 tackles, including three tackles for loss against San Jose State after coming on for the injured Barry Turner. Allen has 31 tackles this season, including five tackles for loss. Senior Glenn Making Transition to Linebacker Senior Cody Glenn has made a quick transition to the defensive side of the football. A running back for the Huskers for his first three seasons at Nebraska, Glenn switched to linebacker during spring ball and quickly moved to the top of the depth chart at WILL linebacker. Western Michigan s offense got a first-hand look at Glenn s defensive ability in the opener. Glenn threw WMU quarterback Tim Hiller for a two-yard loss on the Broncos first offensive snap, setting the tone for a big night for the Texas native. Glenn finished with a team-high 12 tackles, including nine solo stops and three tackles for loss. He also caused a Western Michigan fumble and broke up three passes, just one PBU shy of the NU record for breakups by a linebacker. He backed his play up with another solid effort against San Jose State, registering five tackles, a tackle for loss and two quarterback hurries. Against Virginia Tech, Glenn notched a Nebraska season-high 14 tackles and added a quarterback hurry. He was injured early in the Missouri game and did not play at Texas Tech. He came back against Iowa State with five tackles and has a team-high 40 tackles, including four tackles for loss. Glenn battled injuries during his time at running back, but tallied 579 yards and 14 touchdowns on 143 career carries, before making the switch to defense. Henery Among Nation s Most Accurate Kickers Sophomore place-kicker Alex Henery tied a Memorial Stadium record against Western Michigan, as he booted four field goals in the Huskers win. The four field goals, each of which came from 44 yards, not only tied the Memorial Stadium record, but ranked second all-time at Nebraska for most field goals in a game. It also marked just the second time in school history that a kicker has connected on four field goals of 40 yards or more (NCAA record is 5). The strong performance to open 2008 came on the heels of Henery s perfect kicking season in A year ago, he made all eight of his field-goal attempts, while connecting on 45-of-45 PATs. Henery suffered his first career missed kick against New Mexico State, but hit on all five PATs against the Aggies and added a 19-yard field goal late in the contest. 4Henery nailed a career-long 48-yard field goal against Virginia Tech, bettering his 44-yarders in the opener. He also hit three PAT attempts against the Hokies. 4Henery is now 16-of-18 on field goals in his career, including 7-of-9 in His 12 straight made field goals were the most ever to start a Nebraska career and fell just five shy of the NU school record for consecutive field goals made. 4Henery is 29-of-29 on extra points this season and a perfect 74-of-74 in his career. Special Teams Makes Statement Early in Season In addition to Alex Henery s strong kicking effort to open the season, Nebraska has had several other outstanding efforts on special teams. 4Fellow sophomore place-kicker Adi Kunalic has booted 19 of 42 kickoffs for touchbacks in The 19 touchbacks are the fourth-most of any school in the country. Last year, Kunalic delivered 28 touchbacks in 66 attempts and his 42.4 percent touchback rate was the best of any kicker in the country. In his two-year career, Kunalic has produced touchbacks on 47 of 108 kickoffs (43.5 percent). 4Entering the Baylor game, Nebraska kickers have made 110 of their last 112 kick attempts dating back to Henery s missed field goal against NMSU ended a streak of 87 consecutive made kicks by NU kickers, and he also missed a 53-yard attempt at Texas Tech. 11 Huskers Again Complete Non-League Play With Winning Record Nebraska finished the non-conference portion of its 2008 schedule with a 3-1 record. The 2008 season marks the 27th straight season Nebraska has had a winning non-conference record, dating back to a 2-2 record in Since 1981, the Huskers have lost either one (11 times) or zero (16 times) non-conference games. The loss to Virginia Tech was just the Huskers third non-conference home loss since NU Continues Season-Opening Success Nebraska s victory over Western Michigan on Aug. 30 continued a long string of success in season openers. The win was the Huskers nationleading 23rd straight victory in a season opener, four better than Florida s 19 straight seasonopening victories. The Huskers have won each of their last 23 season openers by 10 or more points, and own an all-time record in season openers. Teafatiller, O'Hanlon Awarded Scholarships; Walk-Ons Making Strong Impact Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini recently awarded a pair of former walk-ons with scholarships. Senior tight end/fullback Hunter Teafatiller and junior safety Matt O'Hanlon were placed on scholarship before the San Jose State game. Teafatiller has been a contributor at tight end each of the past four seasons, and doubles as a fullback this season. The Kingsburg, Calif., native has 12 career receptions, including four touchdown catches. He has also been a key part of Nebraska's special teams units. O'Hanlon was a strong contributor on special teams in 2006 and 2007, playing in 24 games. This season, he has moved to the top of the depth chart at safety and has started all seven games. The Huskers have players from 25 states on their current roster. The NU roster is one of the most geographically diverse in the country. Just three schools have more states represented on their 2008 roster than Nebraska. A total of 31 former Huskers were listed on NFL rosters as of Sept. 5. A full list of Huskers in the NFL is in the left margin. Since the start of Big 12 play in 1996, Nebraska has led all Big 12 schools with 59 players selected in the NFL Draft. No other conference school has had more than 46 players chosen in that period. This past season, three Huskers were selected in the NFL Draft, marking the 39th straight year NU has had three or more players selected in the draft. Conference Crowns Nebraska made its first appearance in the Big 12 Championship Game since 1999 with its 2006 trip to the league title game in Kansas City. The Huskers played in three of the first four Big 12 title games. Nebraska is one of three teams to capture two or more Big 12 titles in the first 11 years of the conference, joining Oklahoma with five and Texas with two. Kansas State, Texas A&M and Colorado each captured one Big 12 crown. Oklahoma leads the way with six Big 12 title game appearances, followed by Nebraska, Colorado and Texas with four each. The Huskers have won 43 football conference championships overall, including eight under Coach Bob Devaney and 13 under Coach Tom Osborne. Oklahoma has won 36 conference championships to rank second behind NU among league schools. Huskers Among Leaders in AP National Titles Notre Dame leads the nation by winning eight Associated Press national titles since 1936, with Oklahoma (7), Alabama (6), Miami (5), USC (5), Nebraska (4) and Minnesota (4) next in line. While the Huskers were awarded the national title by the coaches in 1997, NU finished second to Michigan in the AP poll. In 1970, Nebraska was awarded the AP national title, but not the coaches (Texas was first, Ohio State second and NU third) as the final poll was released before the bowl games were played. In the coaches poll (since 1950), Nebraska is tied for fourth with Miami and Texas with four titles, behind Alabama and Oklahoma with six apiece, and USC with five. Huskers Continuing to Win in the Classroom Nebraska football carries the reputation of one of the nation s most successful programs on the field. Also synonymous with Cornhusker football is success in the classroom. Nation-Leading Total of Academic All-Americans The Nebraska football program has 96 all-time CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, a nationleading total. This fall, several Huskers are strong candidates to add to that list, including senior receiver Todd Peterson, senior punter Dan Titchener and senior linebacker Tyler Wortman. The Husker athletic program as a whole also leads the nation with 263 academic All-Americans across all teams and all sports. Nebraska Leads Big 12 in Exhausted Eligibility Graduation Rates; Rank High in GSR Scores The NCAA released Graduation Success Rate scores and Exhausted Eligibility Graduation rates on Oct. 14 and Nebraska once again fared extremely well. Nebraska was the Big 12 leader in exhausted eligibility rates for the sixth consecutive year. NU boasted an impressive exhausted eligibility rate of 93 percent. Nebraska s exhausted eligibility rate has increased from 87 to 93 percent in the past eight years and improved 21 percentage points since the inception of the exhausted eligibility rate in Nebraska s 93 percent exhausted eligibility rate ranks one percentage point higher than Texas Tech, which ranks second in the Big 12 Conference at 92 percent. The national average for exhausted eligibility is 86 percent for Division I schools. The Husker football team s GSR score ranked near the top of the Big 12 Conference. The Huskers 78 percent rate tied with Baylor for second in the Big 12, trailing only Texas Tech. Nebraska s institutional GSR score of 76 percent ranked fourth in the Big 12. The Graduation Success Rate is an NCAA measurement that, unlike the federally mandated graduation rates, includes transfer data in the calculation. 13 Peterson Honored with George Sullivan Scholarship The first annual George Finley Sullivan Endowed Scholarship was presented to senior receiver Todd Peterson during pre-game ceremonies before the Virginia Tech game. Sully served as Nebraska s Head Athletic Trainer from 1977 to 1995 and as an Assistant Athletic Trainer and Head Physical Therapist from 1953 to The scholarship was fully endowed in Sullivan s honor in 2008 by the Touchdown Club of Nebraska, Inc., and many former Husker student-athletes graciously contributed to the fund. The scholarship will be presented annually to a Nebraska varsity football student-athlete who has demonstrated a high level of athletic and academic achievement, with a strong commitment to community, effective leadership skills, a high degree of integrity, and commitment to excellence in all endeavors. Preference is given to student-athletes who intend to pursue a career in a health-related field. Peterson has been one of the top receiving targets for the Nebraska offense over the past three seasons. Off the field, Peterson is a model student-athlete, carrying a grade-point average in nutrition, exercise and health science. He is a three-time first-team academic All-Big 12 selection and was honored eight times with a spot on the Big 12 Commissioner s Academic Honor Roll. A two-time selection to the Brook Berringer Citizenship Team, he has participated in extensive community service. He is also a semifinalist for the Draddy Award, regarded as the academic Heisman. Husker Seniors on Track for Degrees Senior offensive guard Mike Huff picked up his undergraduate degree in communication studies this past May and is playing the 2008 season as a graduate student. Senior guard Andy Christensen graduated in August and is also in graduate school. An additional 10 members of the 2008 senior class are expected to earn their degrees following the fall semester and 23 of the 25 members of Nebraska s senior class are expected to have earned their degrees by next May. Academic All-Big 12 Selections Fifteen Nebraska players were named to the 2007 academic All-Big 12 football team, including 12 first-team selections and three second-team honorees. Nebraska s 15 academic All-Big 12 selections were the third-most among conference schools and NU s 12 first-team selections were the secondhighest total in the league. The Nebraska honorees were led by junior linebacker Tyler Wortman who posted a perfect 4.0 grade-point average during the previous year. Among the 151 student-athletes honored by the Big 12, Wortman, a mechanical engineering major, was one of seven players recognized for carrying a perfect grade-point average. Also notable among Nebraska s first-team selections was tight end J.B. Phillips, who was a firstteam selection for the fourth consecutive year. Phillips graduated with his degree in marketing in December of 2006, and completed his master s degree in May of Among returning Huskers, Peterson is a three-time first-team selection, while Titchener, defensive end Zach Potter and safety Matt O Hanlon have each been honored twice. Other returning Huskers named to the first team included Wortman, receiver Wes Cammack, and offensive lineman Lydon Murtha. Huskers Boast Impressive Total on Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll The Nebraska football program had 42 players named to the Big 12 Commissioner s Spring Academic Honor Roll. The honor roll recognizes players who earned a 3.0 grade-point average or better in the previous semester. Husker freshmen Thomas Grove, Jay Martin and Patrick Witt each posted a perfect 4.0 GPA during the spring semester. In the fall semester, 39 Huskers were named to the honor roll. Husker seniors Peterson, Titchener and Wortman have each been named to the Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll all eight semesters. Wortman Honored with Brook Berringer Scholarship Nebraska senior linebacker Tyler Wortman was presented the Brook Berringer Memorial Endowed Scholarship during pre-game ceremonies before the San Jose State game. The scholarship was endowed in the memory of former Nebraska quarterback Brook Berringer who died in a plane crash on April 18, Criteria for the Brook Berringer Scholarship includes the following: Must be a football studentathlete; must be involved in community service along with high ideals, excellent character and integrity. A native of Grand Island, Wortman fits the criteria of the Berringer Scholarship. He has worked his way up the depth chart to his current starting BUCK linebacker position. Off the field, Wortman excels in the classroom and in the community. He carries a cumulative grade-point average in mechanical engineering and was a first-team academic All-Big 12 selection in He is on track to earn his degree in May of He was also named to the Brook Berringer Citizenship Team this past spring for his outreach work. Wortman has volunteered at Elliott Elementary School, as well as being a part of Nebraska's regular team hospital visits. Page 14

32 Game 1 Nebraska 47, Western Michigan 24 SCORE BY QUARTERS FINAL Western Michigan Nebraska Lincoln (Aug. 30) --- Nebraska won its 23rd consecutive season-opening victory, giving Coach Bo Pelini a victory in his debut as NU s head coach. Quarterback Joe Ganz led a highoctane Nebraska offense throughout the night, producing his fourth consecutive 300-plus yard passing game in his fourth consecutive career start. Along with way, he became the first NU quarterback to throw for 300 or more yards four times in his career. Senior wide receiver Nate Swift was the biggest beneficiary, hauling in five passes for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a career-long 61-yard TD catch. Cody Glenn, who was making his first career appearance on defense, helped the Huskers hold the Broncos to just eight yards rushing on 25 carries. The Huskers improved to 2-0 on the season despite mustering just 315 yards against the Spartans. San Jose State s inspired defensive play kept their offense within striking distance into the fourth quarter, when Jared Strubeck kicked a 27-yard field goal with 12:17 left to pull within of the Huskers. 33 Game 3 Nebraska 38, New Mexico State 7 SCORE BY QUARTERS FINAL New Mexico State Nebraska Lincoln (Sept. 13) --- Joe Ganz and Marlon Lucky made history as the Nebraska football team cruised to a 38-7 win over New Mexico State. Ganz led the way by becoming just the third Nebraska player in history to score touchdowns by run, pass and catch in the same game. He joined Heisman Trophy winners Johnny Rodgers (1973 Orange Bowl vs. Notre Dame) and Eric Crouch (vs. California, 1999) in that prestigious group. Lucky also did plenty of damage, notching the eighth 100-yard rushing game of his career. He became the 24th running back in Nebraska history to cross the 2,000-yard mark in his career, as he reached the milestone on a career-long 58-yard run in the second half. Nebraska trailed late in the third quarter but rallied to cut the deficit to with more than seven minutes remaining, but the Huskers could get no closer. Quarterback Joe Ganz led the offense as he finished with 278 passing yards to earn as spot on the NU career top 10 chart. Todd Peterson and Mike McNeill each caught a touchdown pass and were two of three receivers with more than 50 yards on the night. 34 Game 5 Missouri 52, Nebraska 17 SCORE BY QUARTERS FINAL Missouri Nebraska Lincoln (Oct. 4) --- Missouri s highpowered offense helped the No. 4 Tigers ended a 30-year losing streak in Lincoln with a victory over Nebraska on Homecoming at Memorial Stadium. The Huskers watched Heisman Trophy hopeful Chase Daniel lead Missouri on scoring drives on eight of its first nine possessions in the opening three quarters to take a commanding lead. The only drive the Tigers did not score with Daniel on the field came on their final drive of the first half when they attempted a 59-yard field goal as time expired after starting the drive with 16 seconds remaining in the half. In perhaps their best half of football of the season, the Huskers amassed 349 yards of total offense in the first half on their way to a 21-0 lead. Nebraska opened the scoring with Nate Swift s 19-yard reception from Joe Ganz with 5:27 left in the opening quarter. Swift, who had eight catches for 112 yards, became the second player in school history with more than 2,000 receiving yards, finishing the day with 2,021 career yards.
