COLGATE BASKETBALL GAME NOTES RAIDERS EXTEND RUN THROUGH TOP-FLIGHT COMPETITION Colgate continues its series of marquee matchups against nationally top-flight competition when the Raiders host Gonzaga in a Sunday matinee. The Bulldogs last season were seeded 11th in the NCAA tournament but pulled off a pair of upsets to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. There, they nearly knocked off Tennessee before losing in overtime. Gonzaga this season was 6-4 heading into Friday night s game at Dayton. The Raiders thus far this year have played at No. 20 DePaul and just Wednesday night hosted No. 1 Connecticut in a sold-out Cotterell Court. Upcoming contests against St. Bonaventure and Siena are on tap before Patriot League play swings into full gear. Colgate and Gonzaga have met two times in basketball, the most recent an Bulldogs win in Spokane in This is the first meeting in Hamilton. PACKED COTTERELL EXPERIENCES GATE-UCONN Wednesday s crowd of 1,782 was the first official Cotterell Court sellout in Colgate women s basketball program history. Fans arrived early and seemed to enjoy the hoopla surrounding the nation s No. 1-ranked team. From the beginning of the season, once our schedule was released, the hype was just big, Randyll Butler said. We had a homeopener, but everything was about Dec. 9. It was great because it really brought the community together. Added Paige Kriftcher, It was just an amazing experience. Being able to play them, at home, having a sell-out is just a once-in-a lifetime experience, especially in Hamilton. We re so thankful for them coming to us. It s a privilege to play them and we re just so thankful for the experience. KRIFTCHER CATCHES FIRE, SCORES 21 ON 7-OF-8 FROM 3 Paige Kriftcher scored 21 points in Wednesday s Connecticut win. The Long Islander was a career-best 7-of-8 from 3-point distance against the nation s No. 1 team and three-time defending champion. Kriftcher from beyond the arc made her first three attempts and then her last four, helping Colgate go 9-of-19 from downtown. For her efforts, Stockill was named CollegeSportsMadness Patriot League Player of the Week. She continued her fine form Monday with 17 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots in a tough luck sevenpoint loss. The senior forward stands third in all of Division I with a 4.0 blocked-shot average. Stockill has posted three games this year of six blocks and three more of three among her total of 28. That brings her career number to 164, leaving her just six shy of tying the Colgate record of 170 set by Leandra Fuller from Stockill ranks among the Patriot League leaders in scoring, rebounding, field-goal percentage and blocked shots. CURTIS IN FINE FORM Junior guard Katie Curtis scored a career-high 12 points Monday at Binghamton, including a 3-pointer that gave Colgate a one-point lead with less than two minutes left. Colgate wasn t able to hold on for that victory, but Curtis in her last five games has scored 22 points and handed out 15 assists. Her shooting chart Monday showed 4-of-6 from the field, 2-of-2 from three and 2-of-2 from the line. Her outstanding play of late has resulted in career-high playing minutes in recent games of 26 at LIU Brooklyn and 30 at Binghamton. Curtis has 14 assists last four games. BUTLER & CO. IN CHICAGO HOMECOMING Randyll Butler led Colgate in rebounding for the fourth Stockill seven blocks from record. straight game, but it wasn t enough in a loss at No. 20 DePaul on Nov. 27. Butler s nine rebounds were a game high, and the Chicago native sports a 9.2 average. Butler leads the Patriot League in assists at 5.0 and is sixth in rebounding at 8.3. She s ranked nationally in assists at 55th. RAIDERS PICKED 7TH IN PATRIOT LEAGUE Colgate s best finish to a conference season in a decade is producing higher expectations for the Raiders. Colgate is projected for seventh place in the Patriot League Women s Basketball Preseason Poll. Seventh is where the Raiders ended last season after winning their final three conference games. The last time Colgate was projected for better than a seventh-place finish was 2010, when the Raiders and Lafayette were chosen for sixth in what was then an eight-team league. 6 Colgate continues its basketball resurgence under head coach Nicci Hays Fort. The Raiders in broke several records using the hallmarks of the Hays Fort coaching style: strong defense, bench play and attention to detail at the free-throw line. Colgate won its final three conference games and wound up 7-11 in the Patriot League in , posting its most league wins since the championship team went The Raiders then went on to add another victory at home in the first round of the Patriot League tournament. The three-game league regular-season winning streak to end the campaign was Colgate s best in conference play since Colgate also sported its best conference winning percentage (.389) since the squad went 6-8 (.429). The Raiders 15-of-16 performance from the free-throw line in the two games of the Patriot League tournament lifted Colgate to 72.0 percent for the season. That is a program record, just eclipsing the 71.9 by the Patriot League tournament champions. Colgate at one point in led all of Division I in free-throw shooting before finishing at 71.2 percent. The Raiders in a 2013 upset win over top-seeded Army held the Black Knights to 40 points, an all-time scoring low by a No. 1 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. And Colgate s bench outscored its opposition over the course of that season by nearly 10 points per game. Those trends continued in , when the Raiders upped both their conference victory total and winning percentage, and made a vast improvement in their overall Rating Percentage Index. Included was another win over eventual Patriot League champion Army. One reason for the program s steadying foundation is Hays Fort following through on her promise of providing her team with playing opportunities in the best possible women s basketball environments. Every year, we strive to play teams that have participated in postseason play, thus challenging ourselves to compete against Nicci Hays Fort Head Coach, Fifth some of the most competitive teams regionally, she said. Back in her debut season at Colgate, the Raiders managed to win five of seven home Patriot League contests en route to a 5-9 conference mark. During the season, Colgate upset top-seeded Army in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament on its way to a two-game overall improvement and 10-win season. Hays Fort has compiled 15 years of college coaching experience at every NCAA level. She arrived in Hamilton after serving as the associate head coach at DePaul University under the mentorship of successful head basketball coach Doug Bruno. The Blue Demons were (.675) during her association with the program, having guided the team to an NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, five NCAA tournaments and a top-10 national ranking. Hays Fort mentored 14 All-Big East Conference performers and two Big East Scholar- Athletes of the Year. In addition, she coached three WNBA draft picks: Felicia Chester of the Minnesota Lynx, Allie Quigley of the Seattle Storm and Jenna Rubino of the Chicago Sky. As DePaul s recruiting coordinator, Hays Fort was responsible for bringing in Keisha Hampton, who played on the USA Basketball team; Katherine Harry, who was a unanimous selection to the All-Big East Freshmen Team; and Anna Martin, the Gatorade Player of the Year runner-up for Kentucky and a member of the Big East All-Academic Team. During her tenure with De- Paul, the team consistently was ranked in the Women s Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 Academic Poll. Bruno said of his former assistant, Nicci was the backbone of our staff through her successful five-year run. We had our best season in school history and Nicci Hays Fort played a vital role in our success. Her work ethic and her energy are second to none. Prior to DePaul, Hays Fort served as head coach and assistant compliance coordinator at Barry in Miami Shores, Fla. She recruited and guided the Division II program to seven All-Sunshine State Conference selections, the SSC Freshman of the Year and three SSC All- Freshmen picks. In addition, she had 10 student-athletes named to the SSC Commissioner s Academic Honor Roll. The Monroe City, Mo., native served as an assistant coach at Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La., from Hays Fort was one of the youngest head coaches in the country when she was hired by Merchant Marine in 1998 to form the women s basketball program. She coached basketball as a club sport in its inaugural seasons, and also coached varsity softball fom During her time with the Mariners, Hays Fort recruited five players who would go on to set personal and team records in both basketball and softball. An elected team captain and member of the Student Athlete Advisory Council, Hays Fort was a two-sport student-athlete in basketball and softball at Truman State in Kirksville, Mo., before finishing her career at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Culver-Stockton in 1998, with a major in psychology and a minor in mathematics. Hays Fort is married to Gregg Fort, who serves as Vice President for College Advancement at Hartwick College. Her sister, Ashley Hays Moore, was a four-year varsity letterwinner and captain on the Missouri softball team. She now serves as Missouri s Senior Director of External Engagement.
