Our web site is: Noting Big 12 Men s Basketball November 13, 2002 In the Preseason Polls For the first time there are three Big 12 teams ranked in the top five of the first Associated Press national poll. This marks the second straight season that the Big 12 has opened the year with four teams in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 No. 2 Kansas, No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 4 Texas, and No. 19 Missouri. In a look at the AP poll history (via the NCAA Men s Basketball Records) this is only the fourth time the members that make up the Big 12 have had at least four teams ranked in the AP preseason poll. In there were five conference teams in the first AP Top 20 (preseason polls started in ). Besides the last two years, the season also had four Big 12 schools in the preseason poll. The Big 12 has collectively been ranked in the AP preseason Top 10 on 39 occasions with Kansas claiming 21 of those. The field consists of eight teams that are either ranked in the Associated Press Preseason Top 25 or receiving votes in the poll. No. 3 Oklahoma will face No. 8 Alabama on Thursday at 8:15 p.m. (CST) on ESPN2. No. 4 Texas will play No. 16 Georgia Friday at 8 p.m. on ESPN2. This will be the third and fourth appearance for Big 12 school s in the eight year history of the event. Kansas won the 2000 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic with wins against UCLA and St. John s. Texas went 0-2 in the 1997 classic with losses to Princeton and Georgia. The Coaches vs. Cancer program, created by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches, exists to leverage the strength, community leadership and celebrity of the country s basketball coaches to raise awareness and in turn, reduce cancer risk through educational programs while raising funds for the American Cancer Society. The Jayhawks are making their fifth appearance in the event and first since winning the 1997 Preseason NIT. KU has finished no lower than second in its four Preseason NIT appearances. Kansas has won its last three Preseason NITs in 1989, 1993, 1997, all under head coach Roy Williams. The Jayhawks finished second in the 1985 event under coach Larry Brown. As a league, the Big 12 has won four of the 20 Preseason NIT championships with Oklahoma State winning the 1991 title under head coach Eddie Sutton to go along with Kansas three titles. The last Big 12 team to make the Preseason NIT s Final Four was Texas in 2000 under head coach Rick Barnes. UT finished third in the event with a 3-1 record. The Big 12 is a combined (.679) in the Preseason NIT. In the 17 years of the event, the Big 12 has had nine teams reaching the semifinals with two placing second and four winning the title. This season even more coaching milestones will be met. Texas Tech head coach Bob Knight is 13 wins from No. 800 for his career. When this occurs Knight will be the fifth overall coach to win at least 800 games while joining Dean Smith (879 at North Carolina), Adolph Rupp (876 at Kentucky), Clarence Big House Gains (828 at Winston-Salem), and Jim Phelan (819 and counting at Mt. St. Mary s). Kansas coach Roy Williams who is the active NCAA Div. 1-A leader in winning percentage at.807 is 12 wins shy of 400. Williams is in 14 seasons at KU. Texas coach Rick Barnes is eight wins from his 300th career victory. Additionally, Barnes is 10 wins from his 100th at UT. Oklahoma head coach Kelvin Sampson is 13 wins from his 200th at OU. When Sampson garners win 201 he will rank second on the OU coaching list behind Billy Tubbs 333 victories. Iowa State head coach Larry Eustachy is 16 triumphs shy of 100 while at ISU. The Future is Looking Good The Big 12 has had 26 players taken in the NBA draft in its six-year history. Three times 1997, 1998, 2000 the league had six player drafted. 5 BAYLOR Wednesday s exhibition game is Baylor s annual Hoops can Help fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club of Waco. Donations to benefit the club will be accepted at the doors of the Ferrell Center prior to the game vs. Houston Superstars Returning All- Big 12 forward Lawrence Roberts is out with a stress fracture to his left leg (fibula). The sophomore, who last season set a Big 12 freshman scoring record with 498 points, injured the leg in workouts in October and is expected back in late November or early December Baylor averaged point shots made per game (273) in , a figure that ranked second in the Big 12 Conference and seventh nationally. The Bears pointers set a school record (former 265, ). IOWA STATE Iowa State increased its all-time record in exhibitions to 30-2 after downing the Illinois All-Stars on Nov. 2...ISU was led by junior college transfer Jackson Vroman, who grabbed a game-high 15 boards and led the Cyclones with 25 points on 11-for-14 shooting from the floor in his first appearance in Hilton Coliseum...ISU held a advantage on the glass...jake Sullivan, Tim Barnes, Marcus Jefferson and Adam Haluska all had double figures for ISU...Sullivan drilled two 3-pointers en route to 16 points while Jefferson was 6-for-9 from the floor to finish with 17 points. Jefferson also had nine boards and three assists. Barnes and Haluska made their Cyclone debuts with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Barnes hit two treys and led the Cyclones with five assists. Haluska tallied two 3-pointers, scoring all of his 11 points in the second half...the Cyclones play their final exhibition game against Global Sports on Nov. 18. KANSAS STATE On Wednesday against Athletes First, Kansas State looks to even its preseason record after dropping a decision to the EA Sports Southeast All-Stars last Thursday. Senior forward/center Matt Siebrandt led five Wildcats who reach double figures in the EA Sports exhibition game with 17 points. Junior guard Tim Ellis was next with 15 points for K- State. Junior guard Frank Richards had 13 points while senior forward Pervis Pasco and junior guard Jarrett Hart had 10 points each. Siebrandt and Pasco are returning starters from last season and Pasco was named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer team. Freshman forward Marques Hayden led the Wildcats with 10 rebounds in 19 minutes work against EA Sports. OKLAHOMA STATE Oklahoma State enters its 94th season of basketball with an all-time record of 1, , a.580 winning percentage. The Cowboys have won two national championships ( ), appeared in five Final Fours, and made 19 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including 10 in the Sutton era. In fact, Coach Sutton has more wins (272) in his 12 years as the OSU head coach than the previous five coaches had (242) in a combined 20 seasons Oklahoma State enters the season having won 100 of its last 101 non-conference games held in Gallagher-Iba Arena since Jan. 7, The only loss during that span was to Florida Atlantic on Dec. 1, 1998, when the Cowboys were ranked 11th in the nation. That loss broke a string of 79- consecutive home non-league wins for OSU. Dating back the last 20 years to 1981, Oklahoma State is (.949) in those types of games. Big 12 Men s Basketball School-by-School Notables TEXAS A&M Freshman forward Antoine Wright scored 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting as the Aggies opened up the exhibition season with an victory over MBC Nikolaev last Monday before 2,831 fans at Reed Arena. Wright, from San Bernardino, Calif., was one of three A&M players in double figures on the night. Senior guard Bernard King scored 16 and dished out six assists, while junior transfer Kevin Turner poured in 15. Senior Keith Bean controlled the boards with 10 rebounds while Wright had eight and junior forward Jesse King added seven A&M plays its final exhibition game of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 19 against the EA Sports All-Stars. Tipoff at Reed Arena is set for 7 p.m. The Aggies open the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 24 against Texas Southern. TEXAS TECH Junior guard Andre Emmett led both teams with 26 points and 11 rebounds, including 19 points and five rebounds after halftime in Texas Tech s win against EA Sports last Thursday. Senior guard Will Chavis and senior forward Kasib Powell added 13 points apiece to complement Emmett Tech s next and last exhibition game comes Thursday at home in an 8:15 p.m. game against Athletes First. Twelve players suited up for Tech Thursday night, not including freshman guards Tanner Ogden and LucQuente White, who sat on the bench in street clothes under an apparent plan to redshirt this year Tech s regular-season opener is Nov. 22 at home against North Carolina-Wilmington. COLORADO Colorado returns 71.8 percent of its scoring and 74.7 percent of its rebounding from last season s (5-11 Big 12) team The Buffs defeated Northern State in its exhibition opener on Tuesday. Sophomore center David Harrison led all scorers with 30 points and also pulled down 18 rebounds in the game Colorado has advanced to the postseason three times in six full seasons under head coach Ricardo Patton. In 1997 the Buffs went to the NCAA tourney and in 1999 and 2000 the NIT. Patton won his 100th game at CU last season and is in seven years at Boulder...Under Patton, Colorado is 18-6 in the month of November and (.706) all-time in November. KANSAS Senior Kirk Hinrich was named to the Associated Press preseason All-America team, AP announced on Tuesday No. 2 Kansas has gone unbeaten in home exhibition action for the ninth straight after its win against Washburn Tuesday. Senior Nick Collison paced KU with 24 points and 15 rebounds against the Icabods...In the Jayhawks exhibition win against the EA Sports All-Stars, KU shot a blistering 62.7 percent from the field and out-rebounded the All-Stars The Jayhawks return three starters and seven letterwinners to a team which went 33-4 and advanced to the Final Four last season...ku boasts a pair of preseason All-America candidates in guard Kirk Hinrich and forward Nick Collison. Joining Hinrich and Collison in the starting lineup are sophomores Aaron Miles, Keith Langford and Wayne Simien. Miles started 36 games last season at point guard while Langford and Simien were the Jayhawks biggest weapons off the bench. MISSOURI Missouri (18th in ESPN/USA Today Coaches PreseasonPoll, 19th in Associated Press Preseason Poll) finished its exhibition season at 2-0 taking out the Midwest All-Stars, last Saturday...In the Tigers two preseason contests, All-American candidate Rickey Paulding averaged 19 points and seven rebounds per contest...junior transfer Ricky Clemons was also solid averaging 17 points per tilt. He just missed a triple-double against the Midwest All-Stars pouring in 21 points, picking up 10 rebounds and eight assists...the Tigers bench was also impressive as they contributed 35.5 points per game...senior big man Arthur Johnson averaged a double-double in the two contests weighing in with 13.5 point-and-10.0 board-per-game averages...the Tigers play six of their first eight contests at home. The other two contests are neutral court tilts with USC (Southern California) in the John R. Wooden Classic and Illinois in the Busch Braggin Rights Game in St. Louis, Mo. NEBRASKA Senior guard Brennon Clemmons scored a gamehigh 16 points, as Nebraska led from the start in a victory over EA Sports last Thursday. Clemmons hit 4-of-6 shots from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers, and grabbed seven rebounds, as the Huskers scored the game s first nine points and cruised to the win. Clemmons was the only Husker to finish in double figures, as all 15 players who dressed saw action, while 11 players broke into the scoring column. Sophomore Jake Muhleisen and junior college transfer Nate Johnson combined for seven of NU s nine points during the opening spurt, as NU held EA Sports without a point for the first 4:18. Sophomore John Turek, who finished with a game-high nine rebounds, scored six points The Huskers will play their second exhibition game next Thursday, Nov. 14, against Sports Tours, which features former Huskers Jaron Boone and Bruce Chubick, beginning at 7:05 p.m. OKLAHOMA Oklahoma won its lone exhibition contest on Saturday over Global Sports at Lloyd Noble Center OU returns 10 players from its roster, four of them starters, and is coming off a 31-5 campaign that included a second-place Big 12 regular season finish, a second consecutive Big 12 Tournament title and the school s fourth Final Four appearance. The 31 wins tied as the second most in single-season school history Oklahoma has won 16 of its last 17 season-opening games with the lone defeat during the stretch coming to Massachusetts in 1993 (84-83).
