Our web site is: Noting Big 12 Men s Basketball November 19, 2002 Regular Season Still Underway for Most Big 12 Teams Eight Big 12 men s basketball teams will join Oklahoma and Texas and kick off the regular season this week. Kansas and Nebraska kick off with mid-week games while the others start their respective regular season on Friday. OU ant UT split with SEC foes Alabama and Georgia in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic last week. Kansas starts its quest for its fourth Preseason NIT title Tuesday against Holy Cross while Nebraska will face Centenary in the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. In the Polls Three Big 12 teams remained in the Nov. 18 Associated Press Top 10. Kansas checks in at No. 2 with Texas No. 3 and Oklahoma No. 7. The Sooners were No. 3 in the preseason AP poll. Missouri dropped one to No. 20 while Texas Tech and Oklahoma State are each receiving votes in the AP poll. Last year there were six different Big 12 teams ranked by AP some time during the season. Kansas was No. 2, Oklahoma No. 5 and Oklahoma State No. 20 in the final AP poll which was released prior to the NCAA Tournament. In the preseason ESPN/USA TODAY Coaches poll, Kansas is No. 2, Oklahoma No. 4, Texas No. 5, and Missouri No. 18 with Oklahoma State and Texas Tech receiving votes. In the final coaches poll of Kansas was No. 2, Oklahoma No. 4, Missouri No. 15, and Texas No. 18. Kansas to Represent Big 12 in Preseason NIT Kansas represents the Big 12 in the 2002 Preseason NIT when it plays host to Holy Cross Tuesday. The Jayhawks are making their fifth appearance in the event and first since winning the 1997 Preseason NIT. KU has finished no lower than second in its four Preseason NIT appearances. Kansas has won its last three Preseason NITs in 1989, 1993, 1997, all under head coach Roy Williams. The Jayhawks finished second in the 1985 event under coach Larry Brown. As a league, the Big 12 has won four of the 20 Preseason NIT championships with Oklahoma State winning the 1991 title under head coach Eddie Sutton to go along with Kansas three titles. The last Big 12 team to make the Preseason NIT s Final Four was Texas in 2000 under head coach Rick Barnes. UT finished third in the event with a 3-1 record. The Big 12 is a combined (.679) in the Preseason NIT. In the 17 years of the event, the Big 12 has had nine teams reaching the semifinals with two placing second and four winning the title. UT and NU had made the commitment to play each other prior to the start of the Big 12. Colorado, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State are the only Big 12 schools to have 6-0 opening game records entering the season. Oklahoma s run was snapped last week against Alabama. CU s run does not extend prior to the Big 12 era as the Buffs lost their opener. OSU has won its last seven season openers. The winning percentage of 73.7 ranked as the third-highest based on winning percentage behind the inaugural season of at 76.5 and the season of Additionally, last year marked the third straight season and fourth overall, that the Big 12 has won at least 100 regular-season non-conference games. Wooden Legends of Coaching honor, the Award s chairman and founder Richard Duke Llewellyn announced last month. Williams joins an impressive list of previous winners, including North Carolina s Dean Smith, Duke s Mike Krzyzewski, Arizona s Lute Olson and last year s honoree, Louisville s Denny Crum. The Wooden Award Committee adopted the Legends of Coaching Award in The honor serves to recognize the lifetime achievements of coaches that exemplify Coach Wooden s high standards of coaching success and personal achievement. Williams will receive the award Sunday, April 13, 2003 during the Wooden Award Ceremony at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.

5 BAYLOR Five Bears scored in double digits, including three with 20-plus points, as the Baylor men s basketball team defeated the Houston Superstars last Wednesday night in Baylor s first exhibition game of the season. Sophomore John Lucas led Baylor with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Lucas added nine assists and four rebounds in just 23 minutes of action. Sophomores Kenny Taylor and Ellis Kidd each scored 21 points on the night. Kidd, a transfer from Seminole (Okla.) State College, had two rebounds and two assists in his first action wearing a Baylor uniform. Junior transfer Terrance Thomas scored 17 points to go with five rebounds and four assists, while Carlton Dotson, a junior transfer from Paris Junior College, led the Bears with eight rebounds. IOWA STATE Tim Barnes scored 13 of his 20 points in the second half to help ISU to a come-from-behind victory over Global Sports, Monday night in Hilton Coliseum. ISU s perimeter was important in the victory, getting 57 of its 72 points from its guard play. Junior Jake Sullivan also had a solid game for the Cyclones, tying Barnes with a teamhigh 20 points. Sullivan was 9-for-18 from the floor. Junior Jackson Vroman chipped in with 11 points, tallying his second double-double in as many games with a team-high 10 boards to help ISU to a edge on the glass. True freshman Haluska got his first start of his young career, scoring nine points and grabbing nine rebounds ISU, now 31-2 lifetime in exhibitions, will begin the regular season, Monday Nov. 25, against Coe College at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. KANSAS STATE Senior Matt Siebrandt went 7-for-7 from the floor and scored 15 points, while junior Jarrett Hart topped Kansas State with 17 points to lift the Wildcats past Athletes First, last Wednesday at Bramlage Coliseum. Senior Pervis Pasco added 14 points for the winners, while senior Gilson DeJesus also hit double figures with 10 points Kansas State is entering its 100th season of basketball. From the humble beginnings of a winless 1902 season to today, Wildcat basketball boasts an all-time record of 1, (.581). K-State s century of excellence includes: 22 NCAA Tournament Appearances; Four Final Fours; 16 Sweet Sixteens; 17 Conference Championships; 35 NBA Draft Selections; and Three Olympians. OKLAHOMA STATE Junior Ivan McFarlin and senior Melvin Sanders each recorded a double-double, and senior Victor Williams scored a game-high 19 points as the Cowboys defeated Branch West Basketball Academy in their final exhibition game Monday. McFarlin finished with 14 points and 17 rebounds, while Sanders also scored 14 points and grabbed 11 boards. As a team, the Cowboys outrebounded Branch West, Doug Gottlieb, a member of OSU s 2000 Elite Eight squad, had eight assists for Branch West, but was just 1-of-7 from the floor OSU, 2-0 in exhibition play, will open the regular season on Friday night as the Cowboys host Yale in Gallagher- Iba Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. (CST). Big 12 Men s Basketball School-By-School Notables TEXAS A&M The Texas A&M plays its final exhibition game against the EA Sports Southwest All-Stars on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Reed Arena. Aggie Athletes Involved, a service organization made up of A&M athletes, will have a donation station near the East Entrance of Reed Arena as part of its Coats for Kids drive The Aggies beat MBC Nikolaev, 86-73, in their first exhibition game on Nov. 11. Freshman forward Antoine Wright, the preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year, led the Aggies with 24 points and eight rebounds. Senior Bernard King started at point guard and scored 16 points with six assists, while junior guard Kevin Turner, a junior college transfer, added 15 points. King and Turner each made 3-of-5 from three-point range The Aggies open the regular season on Sunday against Texas Southern at 7 p.m. at Reed Arena. TEXAS TECH Texas Tech won its exhibition game against Athletes First last Thursday without first team All-Big 12 performer Andre Emmett, who sat out due to an ankle injury. In his place junior newcomer center Robert Tomaszek led Tech with 20 points, seven rebounds and no turnovers. There were four Red Raiders who reach double figures in scoring with seniors Kasib Powell and Pawel Storozynski scoring 13 each and sophomore Ronald Ross chipping in 11 to join Tomaszek. Storozynsky led Tech with eight rebounds in the game. Emmett is expected to return for the season opener on Friday against UNC-Wimington. COLORADO Colorado turned in a triple-digit performance with a win over the EA Sports Southwest All- Stars last Sunday. Junior forward Michel Morandais led the Buffs with 27 points as three others scored in double figures. Sophomore center David Harrison finished with 25 points (12-for-17) while junior guard Blair Wilson was 4-of-8 from beyond the arc en route to his 18-point effort. Freshman guard Jayson Obazuaye rounded out the double-digit scorers with a 10-point effort and grabbed five rebounds. Junior Lamar Harris, a transfer from Compton Community College, was impressive on the boards, grabbing 10. Harris added nine points to the winning effort. Freshman point-guard Antoine McGee added seven assists and six points for the Buffaloes. KANSAS No. 2 Kansas is looking to win its 30th straight home-opener against Holy Cross on Tuesday Kansas has had uncanny success in the Preseason NIT the Jayhawks are 15-1 overall in Preseason NIT play, including a record of 12-0 under Roy Williams...KU has claimed the title in its last three Preseason NIT appearances (1997, 93, 89)...The Jayhawks have won 39 of their last 40 games in the month of November, with seven wins over ranked teams in that span...ku has won 10 of its last 11 season-openers, and the Jayhawks have won their last 29 home-opening games...roy Williams is 12-2 in season-openers and 14-0 in home-openers...two significant milestones are in reach this season KU has 1,771 wins all-time, leaving the team 29 wins shy of 1,800, and KU coach Roy Williams has 388 career wins, leaving him just 12 wins shy of 400 for his career. MISSOURI The #18/19 University of Missouri basketball team opens its season on Friday when it welcomes the Eagles of American University for a 7 p.m. tip off...this will mark the 96th season the Tigers will take to the hardwood for competition...the Tigers went 2-0 in exhibition games earlier this month and will have taken a two week break between their final exhibition and regular season opener...mizzou is all-time in home openers and in season openers...mu is 28-1 in home-openers at their home of the past 30 years, the Hearnes Center...Mizzou is 2-1 under Quin Snyder in season openers...the Tigers play six of their first eight games at home and do not play a true road contest until January 4th when they travel to Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes. NEBRASKA In the two preseason games, Nebraska averaged 88 points by hitting 49.2 percent (65-of-132) from the floor and 88.6 percent (31-of-35) from the free throw line. The Huskers, who allowed 70.7 points per game last season, gave up an average of 56.0 points in the two games. Nebraska also held a huge advantage on the glass in the preseason, outrebounding its opponents by a 54.0 to 31.0 advantage. The Huskers had at least 52 rebounds in each contest, although they have not had 50 rebounds in the regular season since Feb. 26, 2000, against Colorado All 15 available players on the roster (senior forward Wilson Thomas is still playing with the Husker football team as the starting split end) saw action in each game, with nine players averaging at least 12 minutes per contest. OKLAHOMA This marked the first year for Oklahoma that its two exhibition games were separated by a regular season contest...senior guard Ebi Ere scored 24 points against Alabama last Thursday and totaled 36 in his two exhibition games (that s an average of 20.0 points over the three games)...ou has played three true freshmen in its lineup (guard De Angelo Alexander, forward Kevin Bookout and center Larry Turner). Alexander made six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 25 points against Athletes First on Sunday while Bookout had 15 points and seven rebounds versus Global Sports. Bookout became just the second freshman to start the first game of a regular season under coach Kelvin Sampson (Prince Fowler was the other in )...OU s season-opening loss to Alabama was Sampson s first loss to start a season as Sooners coach. TEXAS Against Georgia T.J. Ford tied his career high with 22 points (achieved twice during his freshman season) on 10-of-19 shooting and added eight assists and three steals in 35 minutes With the win over No. 16 Georgia, Rick Barnes earned his schoolrecord 14th career victory over an AP Top 25 opponent. During his 15 years of collegiate coaching, Barnes has now posted 43 victories over AP Top 25 opponents In opener the Longhorns held the Bulldogs to 38.7% FG shooting. UT recorded a perfect 11-0 mark in when holding its opponent below the 40% FG plateau. Since Barnes arrived in Austin, the Horns have limited 61 of their 134 opponents to under 40% shooting.

6 BAYLOR TYRONE NELSON (6-9, F/C, Hempstead, Texas, Hempstead HS) Nelson averaged 29 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks as a junior at Hempstead last season. He was named to the TABC Class 3A All-State first team and MVP of District 25-AAA following his junior year A highly sought recruit nationwide, Nelson is included on several national top-100 recruiting lists. He was rated the 60th-best recruit by TheInsidersHoops.com, No. 64 by Basketball News, No. 70 by The Sporting News, No. 79 by PrepStars, No. 90 by RivalsHoops and No. 125 by Hoop Scoop. Street & Smith s named Nelson an honorable mention prep All-America As a junior Nelson recorded a 42-point, 15-rebound, 15- block and 15-assist performance in 28 minutes in a victory over Halletsville High School. He was rated the No. 13 forward nationally by TheInsidersHoops.com and the 19th-best power forward by RivalsHoops. IOWA STATE JUSTIN HOLT (6-7, 205, F, So., Tacoma, Wash., Lincoln HS, Tacoma [Wash.] CC) Entering his freshman season at Tacoma CC...originally signed with Oregon State out of high school...after a coaching change, Holt opted to transfer to Tacoma CC for his freshman year...since he is a qualifier, Holt can transfer to Iowa State after his freshman season and have three years of eligibility. Law was named his district¹s most valuable player and was the only junior named to The Dallas Morning News¹ All- Area Team. He also was named to the Class 5A All- State Tournament Team and played in the prestigious adidas ABCD Camp last summer in Las Vegas, where recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons rated him among the top 10 guards. In addition to A&M, he was recruited by Oklahoma, SMU and Baylor. JUSTIN LOWE (6-5, 195, G, Fr., Caldwell, Texas, Caldwell HS) - Loewe, a 6-5 guard from Caldwell High School, was a second-team Class 3A all-state pick as a junior after averaging 24.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game and earning his district¹s offensive player of the year honors. MISSOURI THOMAS GARDNER (6-5, 210, G, Fr., Portland, Ore., Jefferson HS) Dave Telep of InsidersHoops.com ranked Gardner, who is a senior this year at Jefferson High School in Portland, as one of the top 30 players in the country. He was also listed as the No. 24 player in the country according to ESPN.com in its Top 100 prospects. Under the tutelage of Oregon coaching legend Marshall Haskins, he averaged 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals per contest and received honorable mention on the Class 4A all-state team last season as a junior. NEBRASKA CHARLES RICHARDSON (5-9, 160, G, Maywood, Ill., Proviso East HS) Richardson, a 5-9, 160- pounder, will join the Huskers after guiding his Proviso East team each of the past three years. Last season, Richardson paired with Dee Brown, now a freshman at Illinois, and Shannon Brown, who is ranked among the top 10 prospects nationally by numerous recruiting services. Proviso East finished with a 26-3 record in while reaching the sectional final before losing to the eventual state runner-up. During Richardson s sophomore year, the Pirates went 25-4 Richardson, regarded as one of the best defensive guards in Chicago, averaged nine points, eight assists, five rebounds and five steals as a junior.
