In the campaign, Baldwin-Tener guided the Lady Pirates to their best result since the season as the team finished and captured the first Conference USA Tournament title in program history and second all-time NCAA bid (1982). Baldwin-Tener owns a ledger of (.582) as a collegiate head coach and is in her 11th season as such. The Smyrna, Ga., native began the women s basketball program at NAIA member Life University, and also served as head coach at Mercer University during the season. Additionally, Baldwin-Tener is the winningest head coach in East Carolina women s basketball history. Melissa McFerrin (Missouri, 83) is in her second season guiding the Memphis women s basketball program and has a record of (.490) at the school. She became the program s fourth head coach in April of 2008 and a took a squad that was the previous season to a overall record while totally overhauling the Tiger offensive and defensive philosophies and adapting the existing team personnel to a new system. The result was a Memphis team that posted a mark of.500 or better following a non-conference schedule for the first time since , and a squad that went on the road to pick up four C-USA victories, including wins at Rice, UAB, Tulsa and Southern Miss. McFerrin arrived in Memphis following a four-year stint at American University. There she was the 2008 Patriot League Coach-of-the-Year, guiding the 2007 Eagle team to the league title game and her 2008 squad to the school s first-ever regular season championship and an overall record. That team won 11 of its last 12 games, advancing to the postseason for the first time since with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a record, guiding five different players to allconference honors, while two others earned all-freshman accolades. The Cassville, Mo., native has also turned stints as general manager and assistant coach of the WNBA s Washington Mystics as well as assistant coaching stops with the New York Liberty, Ohio State, Central Michigan and Wayland Baptist University. BALDWIN-TENER AGAINST MEMPHIS Baldwin-Tener holds a 7-5 record against Memphis as a head coach, guiding the Lady Pirates in all of the series meetings but the first one. MCFERRIN AGAINST EAST CAROLINA The loss in Greenville and victory in Memphis last season serve as McFerrin s only meetings as a head coach against East Carolina. ECU is currently tied with the squad, which also ran off 10-straight home wins to start the campaign. The Lady Pirates can also match the third-most single-season victories at Minges Coliseum as 13 is the standard. East Carolina won 13 contests in the facility in consecutive seasons from ROAD TRIPS NOT KIND Over the past three seasons, conference play on the road has been a thorn in East Carolina s side. Since the start of league action in , the Lady Pirates have picked up just four wins away from Minges Coliseum in 19 tries. KEEP THEM OFF THE GLASS In seven conference games this season, the Lady Pirates have given up 119 offensive rebounds, an average of 17 per contest. That mark has led to 116 second chance points for opponents. VALUE EVERY POSSESSION ECU has reached the 20-turnover mark 15 times this season, including 29 against UCF. That has led to a turnover margin of Additionally, teams have scored 384 points off of those giveaways. MAKING IT RUN Ashley Clarke has steadily improved during her sophomore campaign, having a greater ability to make the offense go this season. Of the Lady Pirates 535 field goals, Clarke has made or assisted on 200 of them, a percentage of.374. Allison Spivey has the second-best mark on the squad at.262 (140-of-535). AMONG THE NATIONAL LEADERS The Lady Pirates are among the top 50 in many categories in the latest national rankings. ECU is fifth in field goal percentage (.477), 19th in assists per game (16.3), 24th in three-point field goal percentage (.373), 25th in scoring offense (74.8), 30th in winning percentage (.789), 34th in three-point field goal percentage defense (.280) and 39th in scoring margin (+11.0). Additionally, Spivey is 15th in three-point field goal percentage (.458) while Clarke checks in at 34th in assists per game (5.3) and 72nd in steals per game (2.5). THE C-USA EXPERIENCE East Carolina is one of the two least-experienced squads in the league. However, that has not fazed the Lady Pirates as they have galloped out to a 16-4 record, including six victories over 2009 postseason participants in addition to a conference tournament finalist. Below is a breakdown of C-USA experience, with 1 point being given to freshmen, two to sophomores, three to juniors and four to seniors. Redshirting is not considered. C-USA is a fairly young league, with 40 freshmen, 44 sophomores, 52 juniors and only 26 seniors. 5 FIRST TO 30...FIELD GOALS East Carolina converted 35 field goals at Houston, marking the 20th time since the start of the campaign that the Lady Pirates have accomplished the feat. After leading Conference USA in attendance last season and ranking 86th nationally with an average crowd of 1,602, East Carolina has brought in a total of 17,360 fans through the turnstiles in its ten appearances. WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE THAT WITH THE WHOLE TEAM? During the preseason, Baldwin-Tener called her Lady Pirates the most unselfish team she has coached. Those words have rung true so far in the season, as ECU has recorded 329 (16.5 per game) assists to its opponents 248. Additionally, the squad is 14-2 this season when recording more helpers than its opponent. The Lady Pirates are just ahead of last year s pace when the team ranked second in C-USA, averaging assists per contest. MAJOR THEFT GOING ON Lady Pirate opponents might want to secure the ball better from this point forward, as ECU is averaging 10.1 steals in 20 games. The Lady Pirates recorded 21 of them against Houston-Baptist and 16 in a home contest vs. Western Carolina. NON-CONFERENCE NICETY East Carolina has always regarded non-conference games as a chance to get better before heading into the rigors of C-USA play. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the Lady Pirates have recently excelled in those affairs. In its last 26 non-league games, ECU has produced a record of 20-6 (.769). Four of the six losses, to VCU, North Carolina A&T, Virginia and Marist, occurred during the season and all four teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament. BENCH IS NOT A BAD PLACE TO BE It seems like the Lady Pirate bench gets deeper with each passing season and is an extension of the starting five. There is some truth to that statement, as East Carolina s bench has outscored its opponents benches in 41 of the last 51 games and all but four this season. 50 PERCENT? NO PROBLEM The Lady Pirates are enjoying another great shooting season, firing at a.475 clip through 20 contests. ECU has shot 50 percent or above in nine games, including two games reaching the 60-percent plateau. CONFERENCE USA: THE NINTH SEASON East Carolina is in its ninth season as a basketball member of C-USA. Starting in 2001, the Lady Pirates became eligible to compete for the league title after contributing 17 years as a constituent of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). During the past eight seasons, ECU has made seven-straight appearances in the C-USA Tournament and two years ago, finished third in the regular season standings, its highest ranking since joining the conference. The Lady Pirates also notched their first league tournament title with triumph over Rice in the 2007 championship game at the Reynolds Center in Tulsa, Okla. IN LIVING COLOR...ECU ON TV The Lady Pirates are currently scheduled to make two appearances on television this season. CBS College Sports televised East Carolina s victory over Marshall on Jan. 4 and is slated to show the Feb. 27 tilt at the FedExForum against Memphis. Additionally, the 2010 Conference USA semifinals and championship contest at the Reynolds Center in Tulsa, Okla. are slated for live broadcast by CBS College Sports. Last season, the Lady Pirates made four television appearances, falling at SMU (TWC Dallas) and Tulane (WITN), while picking up home wins over Southern Miss (WITN) and Rice (CBS C). KEEP RACKING THEM UP The 34 wins between the season and the current campaign are tied for the seventh-most in a two-year span in program history - two behind the seasons. Below is a closer look: SEASONS 1ST SEASON 2ND SEASON TOTAL INTO THE WEST When comparing the Lady Pirate record against the East and West schools in Conference USA, there lies a striking contrast. Since joining the league, East Carolina is (.609) versus its East neighbors and just (.366) against the West. So far in , the Lady Pirates have picked up wins over Marshall, Southern Miss, UCF and UAB from the East and Houston from the West while dropping decisions to West foes Rice and SMU. OTHERS TAKING NOTE Lady Pirate fans are not the only people recognizing the team s strong play thus far this season. ECU is receiving votes in the USA Today/ ESPN Coaches Top 25 Poll for the 10th consecutive week, picking up five in the latest poll released Tuesday. SUPER BALANCED ECU has used its balance to its advantage this season. The Lady Pirates have six players averaging 7.5 or more points per game while every member of the roster played, scored and had a rebound in the win over Houston-Baptist. There are also six players averaging more than 20 minutes per game. In C-USA games, three players are putting in double figures in scoring. INTERVIEW POLICIES Requests to interview head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener or other members of the Lady Pirate basketball team should be made at least 24 hours in advance to Charles Welch in the ECU Media Relations office located on the third floor of the Ward Sports Medicine Building... Requests will be met based on the players class and practice schedules. UP NEXT FOR THE LADY PIRATES After battling Memphis, the Lady Pirates hit the road for two games at Southern Miss and UCF. ECU defeated both teams by double digits in Greenville at the beginning of January as part of a 3-0 start to C-USA play. The Lady Pirates suffered losses in Orlando and Hattiesburg last season, falling to the Golden Eagles and to the Knights. LADY PIRATE BASKETBALL GAME NOTES - GAME 21 VS. MEMPHIS 5

ECU is now 16-4 overall and 5-2 in league play while the Blazers are 10-8 overall and 4-2 in conference action. UAB got on the board first with two free throws by Khalilah Watson, but East Carolina took its first lead at 6-4 on a triple by Kelly Smith at the 16:43 mark. The Blazers would stretch their own advantage to 11-6 on a layup, but Chareya Smith knotted the score with a layup with 14:33 left in the half. After Allison Spivey gave the Lady Pirates a three-point lead, Jala Harris answered for UAB with trey of her own with 11:53 showing on the clock. The game stayed tight as time wore down and Amber Jones hit a running layup to make the score in favor of the home team at the 8:16 mark. Harris gave the Blazers a lead, throwing up a shot from behind the arc that banked high off the glass and fell through. East Carolina pulled within one on two free throws, and eventually tied it when Spivey hit two from the line with 3:41 left in the period. UAB pushed ahead by seven, keeping that advantage heading to halftime. Kim Gay scored eight points to help her team take a lead at the 17:10 mark of the second half, and a Kelly Smith triple extended the margin to However, UAB quickly drew back within one with eight points in just 90 seconds. The Lady Pirates would go back ahead by five when Chareya Smith nailed a mid-range jumper to make the score at the 11:25 mark. Ariana Jackson capped a modest 5-0 run for East Carolina that gave it a double-digit lead, 61-51, but the Blazers closed the gap with a 10-1 spurt to find themselves down just one with 4:38 remaining. Neither team could push ahead and regulation ended with a deadlock. Kelly Smith redeemed herself in overtime for missing a shot at the end of regulation, hitting the game-winning three as UAB failed to overcome a four-point deficit. The Lady Pirates outscored the Blazers 6-2 in the extra session. UAB ATTENDANCE: 1,808 EAST CAROLINA OFFICIALS: E. Sidlasky, L. Gonzalez, T. 10 HEAD COACH SHARON BALDWIN-TENER EIGHTH SEASON AT EAST CAROLINA > RECORD (.524) 11TH SEASON AS A COLLEGIATE HEAD COACH > (.582) OVERALL ALMA MATER: GEORGIA, 1991 Sharon Baldwin-Tener arrived at East Carolina University with the best of credentials and the reputation of a program-builder. In her seven years with the Lady Pirate program, she has exceeded expectations. Given the task of resurrecting a proud and tradition-rich program, she has quickly left her mark and has molded ECU into a championship contender. What Baldwin-Tener has done since she accepted the position has been clear not only in the community but also the country. The squad s RPI rating has improved nearly 150 spots and attendance has quadrupled. Last season, East Carolina led Conference USA in attendance, drawing an average of 1,602 fans per contest. Baldwin-Tener continued to steer the program in the right direction in , leading the Lady Pirates to 17 regular season victories, the most since she inherited the squad in the summer of Coupled with a Conference USA Tournament first round victory over UAB, East Carolina produced a final record of 18-13, marking the second-most wins in a single season for the program under Baldwin-Tener. The Smyrna, Ga. native also oversaw the continued and successful individual development of her players, as seniors LaCoya Terry and Jasmine Young, as well as freshman Jean Best, earned All-Conference USA accolades. Terry and Young ended their careers as two of the top-five scorers in program history, while Best turned in a solid rookie campaign, blocking the eighthmost shots (47) in a single season on the Lady Pirate career ledger. The culmination of Baldwin-Tener s building process occurred in 2007 as East Carolina accomplished another first their first-ever Conference USA Tournament title. For the first time since 1982, the Lady Pirates would be represented in the NCAA Tournament field of 64. Certainly aiding ECU s cause was its third-place finish in the league standings, earning the Lady Pirates their first-ever first-round bye in the event. East Carolina posted a program-best C-USA record of 11-5 to earn the No. 3 seed. After sending home SMU in the quarterfinals and edging UAB in the semifinals, the Lady Pirates fell behind in the second half to Rice, but rallied to notch the win in the championship game at the Reynolds Center in Tulsa, Okla. Both Cherie Mills and Young repeated as All-C-USA Second-Team performers while Young earned All-Defensive and All-Tournament Team honors as well. Another sophomore broke onto the scene as well, as LaCoya Terry was named C-USA Tournament MVP. Prior to her appointment at East Carolina, Baldwin-Tener served one season as head coach at Mercer University in Macon, Ga. She took over a program that won only six games a season prior and led the Bears to a record and berth in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Tournament. The overall record represented one of the biggest turnarounds in Division I that season. For her efforts, Baldwin-Tener was named Atlantic Sun Coach-of-the-Year and oversaw four players that earned All-Atlantic Sun academic designation. Baldwin-Tener s aforementioned penchant for being a program-maker rang true in the three years she spent at Life University. She literally built the program from the ground as the NAIAaffiliated University did not sponsor women s basketball until her arrival. In two seasons of competition, the Lady Eagles compiled a stellar record of In the program s first season ( ), Baldwin-Tener led Life to a mark as the Lady Eagles advanced to the NAIA Sweet Sixteen, only to fall to eventual national champion Oklahoma City. As a result, the new head coach was named the Naismith Georgia NAIA Division III Coachof-the-Year. Life began Baldwin-Tener s second season at the helm with a sparkling No. 7 national ranking, a mark that would only move upward as the year went on. The Lady Eagles put together a remarkable 31-3 record, including a 19-game winning streak, and advanced to the Elite Eight of the national tournament before falling to Southern Nazarene. Life would end the season as the No. 1 team in the final NAIA national poll. Baldwin-Tener added more hardware to her resume that season as she was named the WBCA NAIA National Coach-of-the-Year for the first time and earned her second-straight Naismith Georgia NAIA Division III Coach-of-the-Year honor. While getting her coaching start at her alma mater, the University of Georgia, Baldwin-Tener gained seven years of experience as an assistant coach under head coach Andy Landers. Serving as Landers top assistant, Baldwin-Tener gained a national reputation as a strong recruiter, and was responsible for landing All-Americans Rachel Powell, Kedra Holland-Corn and the dynamic twin sisters Coco and Kelly Miller. Georgia s recruiting class was ranked No. 1 in the nation in 1993 by the Blue Star Report and was recognized as the No. 2 class by the same publication in During her time at Georgia, the Lady Bulldogs won two Southeastern Conference titles and advanced to the NCAA Final Four on two occasions, including participation in the 1996 national title game against conference rival Tennessee. Her efforts did not go unrecognized, as she was named the Naismith National Coach-of-the-Year that same season. Baldwin-Tener enjoyed a successful playing career at both the high school and collegiate levels. At Wills High School in Smyrna, Ga., she averaged 21 points per contest as a senior and was named the 1985 Georgia Class AAAA State Player-of-the-Year. Out of high school, Baldwin- Tener signed with Kennesaw State University and played there for two seasons before transferring to Georgia. At Kennesaw, she was an all-district and all-conference selection, averaging 18 points per game as a freshman before upping that mark to 20 as a sophomore. Baldwin-Tener is ranked 12th on the Owls career scoring list with 831 points and her 12 steals against Tennessee Temple in 1985 are still a school single-game record. Baldwin-Tener earned a bachelor s degree in education from Georgia in 1991 and completed her master s of education in 1997, also at Georgia. She currently resides in Greenville with her husband Matt, son Luke (5) and daughter Samantha (3).
