The second week of league play featured three games decided by four points or less and also added a pair of shutouts. Delta State became the lone 2-0 Conference team on Saturday, rallying from a fourth-quarter deficit to top Henderson State at home, The win helped now No. 19 DSU move inside the AFCA Top 20 for the first time this season. West Alabama joined North Alabama at 1-0 in league play, defeating West Georgia at home in its GSC opener, 28-7, in the Thursday night s GSC-TV Game of the Week. UWA inched up two positions in this week s AFCA rankings to No. 15. Arkansas Tech collected its first Conference victory of the season, weathering a furious comeback by home standing Arkansas-Monticello, Ouachita Baptist exploded for 22 points in the fourth quarter, inching past Arkansas rival Harding at home, Valdosta State s defense ruled the day at Southern Arkansas, as the Blazers leaned on three defensive touchdowns in a 27-0 shutout of the Muleriders. 2 GSC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (for week ending 09/26/10) Week 6 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Arkansas Tech quarterback Rico Keller (FR, 6-1, 214, Marrero, LA). Keller celebrated his first-career start for ATU, leading the Wonder Boys to a victory at Arkansas-Monticello. The redshirt freshman accounted for 287 yards of total offense, led by 209 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 22 carries. The Marrero, LA native s rushing mark was the highest in the GSC this season and was good for third-best in Arkansas Tech history. Keller s 33-yard TD run gave ATU at lead in the second quarter and he stretched to score to with a 58-yard scoring scamper in the third frame. Keller also completed 10-of-26 passes for 78 yards. SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK Valdosta State punter Jack Fulford (JR, 5-10, 193, Waycross, GA). Fulford earns his second career award, first since 2008, and is VSU s second Special Teams honoree this season. The junior averaged 44.8 yards per punt, booming 10 attempts for 448 yards led by a career-high 64-yarder. The Waycross, GA native placed two punts inside the Southern Arkansas 20-yard line, including one at the opponent s one-yard line. OTHER NOMINATED PLAYERS OFFENSE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Valdosta State cornerback Stevie Harden (SR, 5-8, 167, Valdosta, GA). Harden is the second consecutive VSU defender to claim accolades, spearheading the Blazers defense in a 27-0 shutout at Southern Arkansas. The senior had a hand in three of the Muleriders turnovers, turning two of the miscues into touchdowns. The Valdosta, GA native nabbed an interception in the first quarter and then gave VSU a 7-0 lead at 5:45 when he returned a fumble 62 yards for a touchdown. Harden continued his impact performance in the fourth quarter, stretching the advantage to 27-0 with 9:51 on the clock when he returned an interception 42 yards for a score. 3 2010 GSC FOOTBALL--THE WEEK AHEAD A Top 25 battle highlights this week s slate as No. 15 West Alabama journeys west to No. 19 Delta State in Thursday night s GSC-TV LIVE Game of the Week. The game may be tape delayed by one hour in some markets; please check with your local provider. Three Homecoming games headline Saturday s fi ve-game set. No. 3 North Alabama hosts its third Arkansas foe of the season when Arkansas Tech comes to Florence. West Georgia defends its home turf for the fourth time in 2010, entertaining Southern Arkansas. Valdosta State completes the Homecoming matchups, hosting Ouachita Baptist. Rounding out league action is an in-state clash between Henderson State and visiting Arkansas-Monticello. Last, but not least, Harding takes a break from its Conference schedule, hosing NAIA power Lambuth. DSU enters with a 2-0 league record, while UWA is 1-0 after claiming its opener in last week s GSC-TV contest. The Tigers perform in front of the GSC cameras for the third time this season, posting a pair of victories en route to a 5-7 overall GSC-TV mark. The Statesmen appear on television for the second time this year after collecting a home win over Arkansas Tech in the NCAA DII Game of the Week. Delta State is 8-3 all-time in GSC-TV contests. Last year, West Alabama snapped a six-game losing streak to DSU thanks to a home triumph. UWA s last win in Cleveland came in 2002, West Alabama is tops in the GSC in pass offense (348.5), total offense (498.8) and pass defense (143.2) and second in scoring defense (12.0), total defense (273.5), pass efficiency (152.5) and pass defense effi ciency (102.8). Delta State is third in rushing offense (163.2) and fi fth in pass offense (263.5) and total offense (426.8). UWA quarterback Deon Williams leads the league in passing average (337.5), total offense (342.8) and is third in pass effi ciency (160.0). His top target is Gerald Worsham who is No. 1 in receptions (9.0) and receiving yards (131.0) and No. 2 in all purpose yards (144.0). Running back T-Ray Mitchell ranks second in rushing (98.5) and rushing touchdowns (fi ve). DSU running back Trevar Deed is fourth in rushing (81.8), while Maurice Moore is fi rst in all purpose yards (150.8). Week 6 Ouachita Baptist (3-1, Valdosta State (3-1, 1-1), 2:00 p.m. (HOMECOMING) Location: Bazemore-Hyder Stadium, Valdosta, GA Press Box Phone: (229) Series: VSU leads Last OBU 24, VSU 14 (2009) Live Video Ouachita Baptist hits the road for just the second time this season facing Homecoming host Valdosta State. Both schools seek to move past.500 in Conference play after bouncing back last week from losses in their respective conference openers. OBU made history in last year s matchup, earning its fi rst-ever win over the Blazers, in Arkadelphia. VSU owns a lead in the series, including a 5-0 mark in Valdosta. The Blazers defense led the way in the past two home matchups in 2007 (31-3) and 2008 (29-6), allowing a combined nine points. Ouachita Baptist leads the Conference in scoring offense (44.0) and places second in total offense (458.8) and rushing offense (177.5). Valdosta State is fi rst in interceptions (10) and third in rushing defense (71.5), scoring defense (16.5), total defense (289.8) and pass defense effi ciency (104.7). Each team eyes a victory after suffering their fi rst GSC loss of the year a week ago. The schools matchup in Florence for the third time in two seasons after UNA collected a win during the 2009 regular season and a triumph in the Second Round of the 2009 NCAA Playoffs. The Lions have reeled off seven straight against ATU with four of those wins coming at Braly Municipal Stadium. North Alabama is all-time thanks to a 5-2 home record. UNA faces its third Arkansas opponent this year and has a 26-game winning streak versus teams from the Natural State. North Alabama is No. 1 in the GSC in rushing defense (31.5), scoring defense (6.5), total defense (232.8) and pass defense effi ciency (89.7). Arkansas Tech ranks second in rushing defense (51.5), sixth in rushing offense (149.2) and seventh in total defense (351.0). UNA quarterback Lee Chapple is second in pass effi ciency (163.3), third in passing (288.2) and fourth in total offense (289.2). Wide out Jarmon Fortson is fourth in receiving (76.8) and ninth in receptions (4.5). Running back Chris Coffey places fi fth in rushing (52.3), while placekicker Josh Montgomery leads the GSC in scoring (9.2). ATU wide receiver Roger Jackson is third in receptions (5.5) and eighth in receiving (67.8). Quarterback Rico Keller is the reigning GSC Offensive Player of the Week after racking up 209 yards rushing a week ago. HU faces its fi rst non-gsc opponent of the season and the Bisons are riding a two-game non-conference streak thanks to a pair of wins in LU plays its fourth GSC team this season. HU cannot afford to take the Eagles lightly, as they are 1-2 versus the GSC this season, led by an upset win at West Alabama two weeks ago. Harding is best in the Conference in rushing offense (238.0) and pass effi ciency (171.5) and is also fourth in rushing defense (84.3). Running back Kale Gelles is averaging yards per carry which is good for fi rst in the GSC in rushing and 10th in total offense. Teammate Jeremy Holt is eight in rushing (48.7). 5 2010 GSC FOOTBALL--WEEK IN REVIEW #17 WEST ALABAMA WEST GEORGIA 7 (THURSDAY; GSC-TV LIVE GAME OF THE WEEK) No. 17 West Alabama (3-1, 1-0) notched a victory in its league opener, hosting a 28-7 comeback triumph over West Georgia (2-2, 1-1) in Thursday night s GSC-TV LIVE Game of the Week. UWA lit the scoreboard first at 2:54 in the opening quarter when Brock Sharp kicked a 40-yard field, but UWG responded as running back George Summerset capped a 13-play, 99-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown grab at 9:43 in the second frame. The Tigers regained the lead heading into the locker room. Running back T-Ray Mitchell pounded in a one-yard TD run at 8:05, while Sharp booted a 39-yard field goal with three seconds remaining in the first half. West Alabama s defense controlled the second half, holding the Wolves scoreless in the final 30 minutes. The Tigers followed a scoreless third quarter with 15 points in the game s final 8:21. Wide out Kendrick May hauled-in an eight-yard TD pass at 8:21, followed by defensive back Deon Lacey who added a spectacular 50-yard interception return for a touchdown at 5:54. UWA quarterback Deon Williams completed 19-of-31 passes for 328 yards, while wide receiver Gerald Worsham added a game-high 11 receptions for 184 yards. UWG s James Kennebrew led all rushers with 81 yards on seven carries. The Tigers moved to 2-0 in GSC-TV action this year and also posted their second straight win in their Conference opener. Box #23 DELTA STATE 41, HENDERSON STATE 37 No. 23 Delta State (3-1, 2-0) rebounded from a fourth-quarter deficit, preserving its undefeated GSC record with a home win over Henderson State (2-2, 1-2). The teams combined for 71 points in the final three quarters, led by 47 points in the second frame. HSU provided the lone score in the opening frame, grabbing a 7-0 edge as Georgio Hall s two-yard touchdown run capped a nine-play, 69-yard drive at 11:48. DSU s offense found traction in the second quarter, putting together 19 unanswered points. Running back Trevar Deed ran for a five-yard TD just seven ticks into the frame, while running back Brandon Lucas followed with a six-yard rush at 12:17. Quarterback Micah Davis capped the scoring streak via a 16-yard scamper at 8:59. The Reddies rallied to grab a lead with 5:53 remaining in the half. Hall hit pay dirt on a seven-yard run at 6:01, while the Darius Davis recovered a Statesmen fumble in the endzone for six points just eight seconds later. Deed answered on a twoyard touchdown rush at 1:17, but Henderson State took a lead into the locker room after wide receiver Josh Sipho hauled in a 26-yard pass with five seconds on the clock. HSU stretched its edge to on its opening drive of the second half. Running back Terrance Jackson reeled off a four-yard TD run at 11:05, but Delta State blocked the ensuing point-after kick. DSU tied matters, 34-34, at 7:19 via Brandon Lucas 23-yard scamper and L.J. Castile s two-point catch. The Reddies posted their final points of the game, claiming a lead at 3:05 in the third frame when Eric Torres connected on a 21-yard field goal. The Statesmen s defense pitched a shutout in the fourth quarter, giving the offense enough time to put together the gamewinning, 10-play, 71-yard drive that was capped by Deed s three-yard touchdown run at 6:07. Free safety Preston Fielder s interception and a sack by Joe Marshall iced the game for Delta State down the stretch. Deed posted game-highs in carries (25), rushing yards (111) and rushing touchdowns (3), while Davis passed for 225 yards and ran for 48. HSU s Jackson added 105 yards on 23 carries, while quarterback Nick Hardesty was held to 211 yards through the air. DSU remained unbeaten at home versus the Reddies, , thanks to its 10th win in 11 matchups. Box score ARKANSAS TECH ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO 25 Arkansas Tech (2-2, 1-1) put the brakes on a two-game losing skid, thwarting Arkansas-Monticello s (2-2, 1-1) comeback attempt en route to a road triumph. The first half was headlined by five lead changes. ATU s Cody Jones provided the only points in the first quarter, kicking a 22-yard field goal at 7:33. UAM took a 7-3 lead at 13:23 in the second frame when wide receiver Jywin Ceasar caught a nine-yard TD pass, only to see the Wonder Boys answer on defensive back Joe Means 48-yard interception return for a TD at 9:29. The Boll Weevils responded when wide out DJ Stephens caught a 64-yard scoring pass at 9:14, but Arkansas Tech pulled ahead for good thanks to quarterback Rico Keller s 33-yard run. ATU upped its lead to at 12:27 in the third quarter behind a 15-yard fumble recovery for a TD by Brandon Wright just 43 seconds into the second half and Keller s 58-yard scoring scamper. Arkansas-Monticello did not go away, closing the deficit to eight with 9:45 left in the third frame on Carlton Johnson s 42-yard interception return for a touchdown. UAM made the score after Taylor Pontius booted a 21-yard field goal with 9:50 left in the game, but the Wonder Boys sealed the victory when defensive back Michael Chapman intercepted a pass in ATU s endzone with 29 seconds on the clock. Keller racked up 287 yards of total offense led by a GSC season-high 209 rushing yards. His rushing total was also the third-best performance in school history. Opposing quarterback Scott Buisson became UAM s all-time leader in total offense (11,037) in the loss, passing for 267 yards. 6 2010 GSC FOOTBALL--WEEK IN OUACHITA BAPTIST 37, HARDING 34 Ouachita Baptist (3-1, 1-1) trailed the majority of the night versus visiting Arkansas rival Harding (1-2, 0-2), but the Tigers used 22 fourth-quarter points to squeak out a triumph. HU controlled the first half, leading by as many as 15 points. OBU drew first blood on Jason Fowler s 21-yard field goal at 9:42 in the first quarter, but the Bisons led 7-3 at 5:07 thanks to running back Kale Gelles five-yard touchdown run. Fowler closed the gap to one point via a 22-yard field goal with 52 seconds remaining in the quarter. Harding opened the second stanza with 14 unanswered points, thanks to wide receiver Kurt Adams 45-yard reception at 13:51 and wide out Tyler O Quin s 41-yard catch at 10:29. Ouachita Baptist cut its deficit to before intermission when tight end Philip Supernaw hauled-in an 18-yard TD with 1:02 on the clock. Fowler started the third quarter scoring by nailing a 28-yard field goal at 9:12, but Harding took a lead at 6:04 on Adams 16-yard touchdown grab. Nico Hobbs began Ouachita Baptist s fourth-quarter comeback, cutting the score to via a three-yard catch at 8:57, while running back Ricky Brown gave the Tigers a advantage at 6:34 on an 11-yard scoring scamper. HU retook a lead at 4:02 via running back Jeremy Holt s 11-yard TD, but OBU stopped the ensuing two-point conversion attempt. Ouachita Baptist pushed ahead for good when Brown capped a nine-play drive with the game-winning, six-yard touchdown run and Clint Dewitt followed with a two-point reception. Harding drove to OBU s 23-yard line, but two pass in the Tigers endzone fell short, preserving the comeback victory. Ouachita Baptist quarterback Eli Cranor completed 24-of-40 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns, while wide receiver Brett Reece led all players with six catches for 153 yards. Harding s Holt ran for a game-best 102 yards on 12 carries. OBU closed its deficit in the all-time series versus HU to , thanks to its second win over the Bisons in three seasons. Box score VALDOSTA STATE SOUTHERN ARKANSAS 0 Valdosta State (3-1, 1-1) leaned on its defense and special teams to record a 27-0 win at Southern Arkansas (0-4, 0-2). VSU used three defensive touchdowns and two field goals in its first shutout win since Defensive back Steve Harden scored, what proved to be the game-winning touchdown, when he returned a fumble 62 yards for a score at 5:45 in the first quarter.
