No. 3 North Alabama, Henderson State and Harding held their respective foes scoreless in Saturday s five-game slate. UNA remained undefeated overall (5-0) by celebrating Homecoming at Arkansas Tech s expense, HSU dominated instate rival Arkansas-Monticello on both sides of the ball in a 47-0 home win. HSU racked up 550 offensive yards while UAM struggled without the services of standout quarterback Scott Buisson reaching just 127 yards. HU stepped out of league play, recording its first consecutive home shutout since 1965 thanks to a 27-0 blanking of NAIA Lambuth. The Bisons also set a school record by allowing just 17 total yards. No. 19 Delta State joined UNA as the league s lone undefeated league teams, outgunning No. 15 West Alabama at home in Thursday night s GSC-TV Game of the Week, DSU s win vaulted the Statesmen to No. 13 in this week s AFCA national poll and dropped UWA out of the rankings. Valdosta State preserved a Homecoming victory over Ouachita Baptist by stopping the game-tying two-point conversion attempt with 1:10 left to play. The win helped push the No. 22 Blazers back into the AFCA poll for the second time this season. 2 GSC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (for week ending 10/03/10) Week 7 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Delta State quarterback Micah Davis (JR, 6-2, 200, Wesson, MS) and Henderson State quarterback Nick Hardesty (SR, 6-0, 205, Salina, KS). Davis collects his first-ever award thanks to a careerbest effort in DSU s thrilling home upset of No. 15 West Alabama in Thursday s GSC-TV Game of the Week. The junior completed 34-of-48 passes (70.8 percent) for a career-high 414 yards and five touchdowns versus the Tigers. The Wesson, MS native sparked the Statesmen s 20-point, fourth-quarter comeback, capped by the game-winning, 16-yard scoring strike with 19 seconds left to play. Hardesty earned his second honor of the season, leading HSU to a 47-0 home shutout against in-state foe Arkansas- Monticello. The senior completed 18-of-28 passes for 415 yards and accounted for four total touchdowns behind three through the air. The Salina, KS native completed 64.2 percent of his passes and averaged 23.1 yards per completion in 43 minutes of play. Hardesty connected on touchdown passes from 44, 59 and 87 yards. The 87-yard strike was the second-longest in Reddies history. OTHER NOMINATED PLAYERS OFFENSE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK North Alabama cornerback Bryan Thomas (JR, 6-1, 214, Zephyrhills, FL). Thomas is the first UNA defender to take home laurels this season, spearheading the Lions defense in its second consecutive shutout, 28-0 at home over Arkansas Tech. The junior tied a season-high with four total tackles, including one solo stop. The Zephyrhills, FL native also grabbed his second interception of the season, returning the miscue, 30 yards for a touchdown. His return stretched the Lions lead to 21-0 with 11:55 on the clock in the third quarter. SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK West Georgia punt returner Denarius Appling (FR, 5-7, 140, Griffin, GA). Appling is the first UWG Special Teams honoree since The freshman wide receiver made an impact on special teams, returning three punts for 80 yards (26.7 avg.). 3 2010 GSC FOOTBALL--THE WEEK AHEAD The Natural State plays host to four of this week s five GSC Football games. Leading the way is Arkansas-Monticello which hosts No. 13 Delta State in Thursday night s GSC-TV LIVE Game of the Week. The game may be tape delayed by one hour in some markets; please check with your local provider. Two instate battles headline Saturday s slate as Ouachita Baptist goes to Arkansas Tech and Henderson State travels to Southern Arkansas. West Alabama journeys to Arkansas rival Harding, while No. 3 North Alabama crosses state lines to face West Georgia. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7TH GSC-TV LIVE GAME OF THE WEEK #13 Delta State (4-1, Arkansas-Monticello (3-2, 1-2), 7:00 p.m. Location: Willis Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium, Monticello, AR Press Box Phone: (870) Series: DSU leads Last Meeting: DSU UAM 3 (2009) Live Stats No. 13 Delta State and host Arkansas-Monticello take the field in the GSC-TV LIVE Game of the Week for the second time this season. UAM hosts a nationally ranked foe on television for the second time after falling to then No. 10 West Alabama, in the season s first GSC-TV game. DSU remained perfect in league play a week ago, recording a home triumph over then No. 15 UWA in last week s GSC-TV contest. The Statesmen have the most wins in GSC-TV LIVE action, posting a 9-3 mark, while the Boll Weevils are 4-4. The nearby rivals meet in Monticello for the second year in a row after Delta State ran its winning streak versus Arkansas- Monticello to 13 via a 42-3 blowout in DSU has also captured 14 of the last 15 clashes and are in Cotton Boll Stadium. UAM has dropped eight straight at home versus the Statesmen with its last win coming in Delta State s offense has been the difference maker recently, putting up at least 40 points in the seven of the last eight meetings. DSU is 1-1 on the road in 2010, while UAM is 0-2 at home. Delta State ranks third in the GSC in pass offense (293.2) and fourth in scoring offense (30.6), total offense (449.0) and rushing offense (155.8). Arkansas-Monticello is tops in punt return average (19.6) and sacks against (0.80) and sixth in rushing defense (130.4). DSU quarterback Micah Davis is the reigning GSC and National Offensive Player of the Week and places third in the Conference in passing (293.6) and total offense (309.0). Running back Trevar Deed is fourth in rushing (72.0), while wide receiver L.J. Castile is fourth in receptions (5.2) and eighth in receiving (66.4). Maurice Morris leads the league in all purpose yards (158.4). UAM quarterback Scott Buisson sat out last week and his availability for this weekend is questionable. Running back Nakita Myles is seventh in rushing (48.8) and will be counted on more. Wide out Jywin Ceaser is No. 1 in punt returns (22.2), while Derek Jambon is No. 1 in punting (43.6). SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9TH #3 North Alabama (5-0, West Georgia (3-2, 2-1), 1:00 p.m. Location: University Stadium, Carrollton, GA Press Box Phone: (704) Series: UNA leads Last UNA 55, UWG 7 (2009) Live Stats No. 3 North Alabama hits the road for just the third time this season, while West Georgia defends University Stadium for the fifth time. UNA puts its streak of 10 consecutive scoreless quarters on the line. The Lions defense pitched shutouts in the past two games and have yet to allow 100 yards rushing or 300 yards total offense in a game. UWG has hit its stride so far this year, posting the most wins in a season since 2005 via three home triumphs. North Alabama is all-time versus the Wolves and is 8-6 in Carrollton. UNA has claimed five in a row with UWG s last home triumph coming in North Alabama leads the nation in scoring defense (5.20) and first in the Conference in rushing defense (40.4) and pass efficiency defense (90.1). UNA is also first in red zone defense (44.4 percent), while West Georgia is tops in red zone offense (90.0 percent). UWG is also fifth in scoring defense (19.2) and seventh in rushing defense (tied, 131.8) and pass defense (234.6). UNA signal caller Lee Chapple places second in pass efficiency (156.8) and fifth in passing (271.8) and total offense (264.8). Wide receiver Jarmon Fortson is sixth in receiving (69.2) and running back Wes Holland is 10th in rushing (43.2). UWG defensive end Jeremy Cook is No. 1 in sacks (1.40) and tackles for loss (1.80). Wide out Arkeem French is tied for first in receiving touchdowns (five) and is also fifth in receiving (69.8). The schools clash for the first time since 2007 when ATU recorded a Homecoming victory. The Wonder Boys own a series edge, including five straight wins. OBU has dropped the last six matchups in Russellville dating back to ATU is 1-1 at home in 2010, while OBU is 1-1 on the road. Ouachita Baptist paces the GSC in scoring offense (39.0) and is second in rushing offense (168.4) and third in total offense (455.8) and pass defense (176.4). Arkansas Tech ranks second in rushing defense (53.0), sixth in rushing offense (134.6) and seventh in total defense (333.8). OBU running back Daniel McGee is first in rushing touchdowns (six) and scoring (tied, 8.6) and is third in rushing (84.6). Quarterback Eli Cranor places fourth in passing (285.4), total offense (307.2) and pass efficiency (145.3). His top target is Brett Reece who is second in receiving (88.2) and ninth in receptions (tied, 4.4). ATU wide out Roger Jackson is third in receptions (5.4) and seventh in receiving (67.6). Tavin Davis (24.3) and Draper Demouchet (23.4) rank first and second in kick return average, respectively. West Alabama (3-2, Harding (2-2, 0-2), 6:00 p.m. Location: First Security Stadium, Searcy, AR Press Box Phone: (501) Series: HU leads Last UWA 33, HU 19 (2009) Live Stats West Alabama visits Harding in search of its first back-to-back wins over the Bisons since UWA put the brakes on a six-game skid versus HU a year ago, The win was also just the Tigers third in the last 10 matchups. Harding owns a all-time edge and is 7-1 at home with its lone setback coming in HU is 2-0 at First Security Stadium, while UWA is 1-1 on the road. Harding leads the league in total defense (231.8), pass efficiency (162.7) and rushing offense (238.0) and is second in pass defense (170.2) and scoring defense (16.2). West Alabama is No. 1 in total offense (503.6) and No. 2 in pass offense (346.0) and pass efficiency (151.6). The GSC s top two rushers will take the field. HU s Kale Gelles is the league s rushing leader (107.5), while UWA s T-Ray Mitchell is second (91.0). West Alabama quarterback Deon Williams is first in total offense (361.6) and pass efficiency (157.1) and second in passing (337.2). UWA wide receiver Gerald Worsham leads the GSC in receptions (8.4) and receiving (119.4). Harding signal caller Chaz Rogers is eighth in rushing (46.3), while teammate Josh Powell is 10th in passing (98.2). Henderson State (3-2, Southern Arkansas (0-5, 0-3), 6:00 p.m. Location: Wilkins Stadium, Magnolia, AR Press Box Phone: (870) Series: HSU leads Last HSU 51, SAU 17 (2009) Live Stats Home standing Southern Arkansas and in-state rival Henderson State lock horns for the 75th time on Saturday. HSU has a slim lead in the all-time series, thanks to four consecutive triumphs. SAU has not topped the Reddies in Wilkins Stadium since 2005 with Henderson State claiming road wins in 2007 and HSU s offense has hit for at least 42 points in the last three meetings, including a pair of 50-point outputs. SAU seeks to snap a six-game losing skid dating back to Henderson State is No. 1 in the Conference in pass offense (356.4) and second in total offense (466.4) and pass defense efficiency (103.3). Southern Arkansas is best in pass defense (160.8) and third in total defense (310.2). HSU quarterback Nick Hardesty is tops in passing (347.6) and passing touchdowns (14) and second in total offense (356.8). Wide receiver Sean Mc- Grath is second in receptions (5.8), while Chris Evering is third in receiving (86.2). Eric Torres is tied for tops in scoring (8.6) and field goals (1.40). 5 2010 GSC FOOTBALL--WEEK IN #19 DELTA STATE 41, #15 WEST ALABAMA 37 (THURSDAY; GSC-TV LIVE GAME OF THE WEEK) No. 19 Delta State (4-1, 3-0) posted the game-winning touchdown with just 19 seconds left, clipping No. 15 West Alabama (3-2, 1-1) in Thursday night s GSC-TV Game of the Week, DSU hit pay dirt on the game s opening drive when wide receiver L.J. Castile collected a nine-yard touchdown pass at 13:16. UWA responded with nine unanswered points thanks to three field goals by Brock Sharp. Sharp connected from 27 and 32 yards in the first quarter and finished with a 29-yarder just six seconds into the second frame. The squads traded TDs the rest of the first half. Statesmen wide out Dex Hopkins caught a four-yard score at 11:58, followed by Tigers wide receiver Kendrick May s 26-yard reception. Castile posted an eight-yard touchdown catch at 1:55, only to see Mark Weathersby give West Alabama a halftime lead via a 27-yard TD. Both teams rebounded from a scoreless third quarter, combining for 34 points in the final 15 minutes. The rivals traded punches in the fourth quarter, beginning with Delta State running back Brandon Lucas three-yard run at 11:10. UWA grabbed a lead at 6:28 when wide out Randy Lowery nabbed a five-yard TD, but the Statesmen responded at 2:26 on Tim Smith s 25- yard scoring catch. West Alabama answered just 58 seconds later, via a tremendous one-handed, 15-yard touchdown reception by Lowery, but Delta State rallied with a 58-second scoring drive of its own. Castile gave the Statesmen the lead for good, as he hauled-in his third TD pass of contest by leaping over a UWA defender for six points with 19 seconds remaining. UWA drove to the 50-yard line with five ticks on the clock, but a Hail Mary pass fell to the ground, icing the victory for DSU. Statesmen quarterback Micah Davis completed 34-of-48 passes for 414 yards and five touchdowns. UWA counterpart Deon Williams connected on 26-of-45 throws for 321 yards and three TDs. Delta State moved to 3-0 in league action, while West Alabama suffered its first Conference loss of the year. Box #3 NORTH ALABAMA 28, ARKANSAS TECH 0 (HOMECOMING) No. 3 North Alabama (5-0, 2-0) celebrated Homecoming by running its defensive scoreless streak to 10 quarters via a 28-0 triumph over Arkansas Tech (2-3, 1-2). UNA scored on its first possession when wide receiver Donald Bowens capped a 13-play, six-minute drive by catching a 31-yard touchdown pass. The Lions offense was held in check until late into the second quarter, as wide out Tim Hawthorne hauled-in a 39-yard TD with 2:27 on the clock. The defense stretched North Alabama s lead to 21-0 at 11:55 in the third stanza after cornerback Bryan Thomas returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown. Running back Wes Holland s 12-yard TD run completed the scoring at 2:37. UNA s scoreless streak seemed to be in jeopardy late in the fourth quarter after the Lions turned the ball over on their own 25-yard line. The defense held firm at the goal line, stuffing three straight ATU rushing attempts. Holland led all rushers with 70 yards on 14 carries, while quarterback Lee Chapple completed 18-of-31 passes for 206 yards and two TDs. The victory marked UNA s second straight shutout and increased its winning streak versus Arkansas foes to 27. The Lions are all-time versus the Wonder Boys thanks to its eighth straight win. Box VALDOSTA STATE 21, OUACHITA BAPTIST 19 (HOMECOMING) Valdosta State (4-1, 2-1) withstood a late-game comeback by visiting Ouachita Baptist (3-2, 1-2) to celebrate Homecoming with a win. OBU lit the scoreboard first at 10:27 in the first quarter, turning a VSU turnover into Jason Fowler s 39-yard field goal, but VSU took a 7-3 edge at 6:47 via running back Ronnye Nelson s seven-yard touchdown run. Fowler closed the gap to one point before intermission, booting a 38-yard field goal at 3:30. The Blazers upped their lead to 21-6 in the third stanza when Nelson heaved a 15-yard scoring pass to Cameo Holloway at 10:16, while running back David Bailey added a six-yard TD scamper at 3:43. The Tigers trimmed their deficit to at 1:04 via Peyton Tolliver s 33-yard touchdown reception and then made the score when quarterback Eli Cranor sneaked in a oneyard TD run with 1:10 left in the game. Valdosta State preserved the win, stopping Ouachita Baptist s two-point conversion attempt. VSU s Nelson accounted for 219 total yards, rushing for 54, receiving for 46 and tallying 119 total yards on kickoff and punt returns. 6 2010 GSC FOOTBALL--WEEK IN HENDERSON STATE 47, ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO 0 Henderson State (3-2, 2-1) turned in dominate efforts on offense and defense to breeze past in-state rival Arkansas-Monticello (2-3, 1-2) at home, The UAM offense struggled without starting quarterback Scott Buisson, who suffered an injury to his throwing hand last week. HSU crossed the goal line quickly, moving the ball 68 yards in 1:46, culminating in quarterback Nick Hardesty s one-yard touchdown run at 13:14. Eric Torres added a 30-yard field goal at 7:15 and wide receiver Chris Evering closed the 17-point first quarter with a 59-yard scoring catch at 2:50. The Reddies put the game away in the second quarter, as the defense accounted for eight of 16 points. Defensive tackle Luke Landri recorded a safety at 10:54, while Kenny Evans returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown at 1:35. Running back Terri Williams added a one-yard jaunt at 7:20. Completing the game scoring was Sean McGrath s 44-yard TD catch at 6:36 and Evering s 87-yard bomb at 2:05. Despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter, Henderson State quarterback Nick Hardesty completed 18-of-28 passes for 415 yards. Wide out Nick Johnson had five catches for 104 yards, while Evering posted a game-high 146 yards on just two receptions. HSU s first shutout of the season marked the Reddies fifth win over UAM in six seasons. Box WEST GEORGIA 31, SOUTHERN ARKANSAS 17 (HOMECOMING) West Georgia (3-2, 2-1) outscored Southern Arkansas (0-5, 0-3) 17-7 in the second half, en route to a Homecoming victory. SAU jumped on top first thanks to running back Carlos Brown s 11-yard touchdown rush at 12:01, but UWG running back James Kennebrew answered with a six-yard TD run at 2:27. Special teams provided the 10 second quarter points. Wolves wide out Denarius Appling returned a punt 50 yards for a score at 7:22, while Noe Cuevas cut West Georgia s halftime lead to by booting a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. Kennebrew struck through the air just 1:20 into the third quarter, hauling-in a 25-yard TD pass, but Brooks White responded via a six-yard scoring catch at 6:44. UWG pulled away from there as Mark Bardenwerper kicked a 35-yard field goal at 4:24 in the third frame and Arkeem French reeled-in a 21-yard TD pass with 5:18 left to play. UWG signal caller Joe Weatherford came off the bench to spark the offense, completing 13-of-18 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns. Kennebrew compiled 88 total yards, while French had a game-high 77 yards receiving on five catches. The win gave the Wolves their most overall and Conference wins since 2005 and upped their lead in the all-time series versus SAU to 6-4. Box HARDING 27, LAMBUTH 0 Harding (2-2, 0-2) posted the most dominate defensive performance in school history, blanking NAIA Lambuth at home, HU s defensive flexed its muscle all day long, setting a school record by allowing just 17 total yards, while also holding the Eagles without a third-down conversion. The Bisons took a 17-0 lead into halftime, thanks to Adin Menkin s 37-yard field goal with 48 seconds left in the first quarter and second quarter rushing touchdowns by running back Kale Gelles (two yards) and quarterback Josh Powell (one yard). Powell added another one-yard scoring plunge at 8:51 in the third frame and Menkin capped the scoring via a 25-yard field goal with 11:38 remaining in the game. Gelles rushed for a game-high 75 yards on 17 carries and also added a game-best two catches for 22 yards. The shutout marked the first time since 1965 that a Harding team posted consecutive home shutouts, following a blanking of Southern Arkansas in the season opener.
