8 THE JEFF MITTIE ERA: 9 YEARS I 7 TWENTY-WIN SEASONS I 5 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS I 2 FROGS IN THE WNBA Now entering his 10th year as the head coach of the TCU women s basketball program, Jeff Mittie has never been one to shy away from a challenge. Players have come and gone over the last decade, but one thing that has stayed consistent is the winning tradition that Mittie s staff has instilled in his teams. The Lady Frogs under the guide of the current staff have turned a once-dormant program that had notched only a single winning season in 17 years as a member of the Division I ranks into one of the nation s most consistent winners. Mittie s nine seasons have seen the squad average nearly 22 victories per campaign while advancing to the postseason for the first eight times in school history including an astonishing seven straight NCAA Tournament bids from 2001 through The program s first Women s NIT appearance was added last season. The foundations of those teams were built on the shoulders of some talented individuals. But like with any other successful college program, the true challenge lies in the ability to continue that success once that talent has been lost to graduation. That same challenge awaits the Lady Frogs in , one year after the team earned its highest finish (second) during its three seasons as members of the Mountain West Conference. A year ago TCU was able to field a versatile team that thrived because of its deep talent at the guard position. The Frogs were solid at handling the ball, averaging only about 16 turnovers per game to finish second in the MWC. On the other end of the court, the squad had one of the top defensive seasons in school history, giving up only 60.1 points per game while forcing more than 21 turnovers a contest. The core of that team, a five-player senior class that amassed the second-most wins in school history, is gone. The numbers put up by Adrianne Ross, Lorie Butler-Rayford, Moneka Knight, Jenna Lohse and Helen Roden were staggering 4,038 points, 1,960 rebounds, 1,127 assists and 776 steals during their Frog careers. Despite the heavy losses, TCU appears primed to continue the program s tradition of excellence by mixing in an infusion of new talent with the proven veteran presence left over from last season s team. The significant change in personnel could shift the Lady Frogs strength from speed to versatility and size in , Mittie believes. Our size is probably our biggest strength when taking in account our ability to put size in different spots on the floor, Mittie said. We can put some size at the point guard spot and not just the power forward and other traditional spots. We are going to have an extremely high basketball IQ and utilize the size we have to create some mismatches. The shift in size should give the Frogs a completely different look from the up-tempo, guard-oriented teams that combined to win 44 games over the past two seasons. Jeff Mittie WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Season Preview Helena Sverrisdottir I like our ability to score inside a little better than what we were able to the last couple years, Mittie said. I think we can do it with different people. This will be a different team, because we have never had a point guard like Helena (Sverrisdottir). How we utilize that size will be different and fun for us as a coaching staff. While development of new leadership and chemistry would appear to be a potential obstacle with the heavy losses suffered during the offseason, Mittie believes his current team has that angle covered. I think we saw that taken care of the minute our season ended last year, Mittie said. As soon as we took some time off and came back from the offseason, this team started to build that relationship and trust with each other. I ve been very pleased with this group off the court. They have been accountable, reliable and trustworthy all the things it takes to be a cohesive team. THE VETERANS One very important piece to last season s team is back in Sverrisdottir, a sophomore who earned Mountain West Conference Freshman Player of the Year honors during her first season in Fort Worth. Sverrisdottir averaged 9.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game and was a fixture in the starting lineup from the season s opening tip. She spent much of the past offseason playing in Europe for her native national team in Iceland. Sverrisdottir brings tremendous versatility to the TCU lineup, and Mittie s staff can match her up at any spot on the floor at any time in the game. One position where the staff hopes it can utilize her extensively is at point guard, the role she plays when with her teammates in Iceland. We will try to utilize Helena s talents at all different spots on the floor, said Mittie. She adjusted to the speed of the college game very well a year ago, so that will enable us to play her at more of the guard spots than we did last season. We want to get her more involved with handling the basketball. Adding experience behind the arc along with Sverrisdottir is fellow sophomore Emily Carter, who made major contributions a year ago off the bench as one of the team s best 3-point threats. Carter averaged 5.4 points while playing just over 15 minutes per contest as a redshirt freshman and led the Frogs in both 3-point (38.1 percent) and free-throw (84.8) shooting. While Carter was utilized mainly as a spot-up shooter, the Frogs hope to get her on the move a little more this season. We felt like we could get Emily open in a spot-up situation last year, but we couldn t run her off many screens, Mittie said. She spent a lot of time in the spring doing that, and I think we saw an improved and quicker shot from her.

9 Season Preview Micah Garoutte TCU possesses another long-range weapon in junior Shayla Moore. Only used in a limited role during her first two seasons, Moore looks to shake off a prolonged shooting slump that plagued her much of last season. Shayla had always been a great shooter in high school, and last year is the first time she had ever really struggled, Mittie said. Those high school flaws got exposed a year ago. She has worked really hard to correct those things. I know she really wants to have a big year, and I think she can have a big year for us. In the frontcourt, the Frogs return two physical presences in sophomore Micah Garoutte and senior Micaela Younger. Garoutte was inserted into the starting lineup at the center spot midway through her freshman season and made progress both offensively and defensively throughout the second half of the year. During TCU s loss to San Diego State in the MWC Tournament semifinal, she tied for the team lead with 12 points and blocked a career-high five shots. Garoutte s development should be even more magnified with another season at the college level under her belt. Micah had a great summer developing her game, and her early fall workouts have been very good, Mittie said. We hope to be able to play her out on the perimeter a little more as a power forward this season. She was a player who ended the year very strong, and hopefully she can pick up where she left off. TCU s lone senior on the roster, Younger hopes for more consistency in her final campaign after starting nine games during the first half of last season. After recording one of the top games for a Frog last season during a 21-point, 11-rebound performance against No. 12/11 Texas A&M, she struggled through the second half of the year and saw a significant decrease in minutes. Offensive consistency will be key for her during her senior season. Micki continues to show glimpses here and there, Mittie said. She is physical, is running the floor better and is our best defender in the paint. We would like to see her score more effectively down low and be more consistent in that area. If she can score more consistently, she can be a good option for us down low. THE TRANSFERS Along with the five returning members of last season s team are seven newcomers who will be looked at to help TCU keep its high standing in the Mountain West Conference. Among the new faces are four transfers who will bring high-level talent to the floor. We do have more experience than shows up on paper here at TCU, Mittie said. Not only that, but we have players who were playing at programs that were competing at a high level and were successful at that level. Three of the players, juniors Chantelle John, TK LaFleur and Eboni Mangum, sat out all of last season after transferring from other major college programs. The other, sophomore Rachel Rentschler, played last season as a true freshman but received a waiver from the NCAA to avoid having to sit out the upcoming campaign. 9 This group that sat out (last season) is hungry to play, Mittie said. It has been a long time since they played in a college game, and I think they will be ready to go. Mangum, voted in the preseason as the Mountain West Conference s Newcomer of the Year, returns to the court after transferring from Louisiana Tech following the season. The 5-8 guard played two seasons as point guard for the Lady Techsters and was named to the All-WAC Freshman Team following her first season. Mangum has the ability to play any of the guard positions for TCU and appears to be in line to run the point when the Frogs elect to move Sverrisdottir around the floor. Eboni is super-quick off the dribble, can get to the rim and can play in an up-tempo offense, Mittie said. She can also shoot the three, so we feel she has the potential to be an impact player for us. A former youth basketball teammate of Mangum s in the Houston area, LaFleur arrived at TCU after helping Nebraska reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in seven seasons as a sophomore in LaFleur is one of the Frogs more athletic players and possesses great ability shooting off the dribble, in addition to providing the squad with another accurate long-range weapon. TK is a very good long-range shooter with good cutting ability in our offense, Mittie said. Her pull-up game has developed nicely, and she is a good off-the-ball defender. TK is another one of these players who has experienced success at a high level elsewhere, so we believe she will be a great addition to this team. John also sat out last season after playing two seasons for George Washington, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament each of her two campaigns. She should give the Frogs much-needed flexibility in the post, as she can score down low and shoot the mid-range jumper. John s name should be familiar to those who follow TCU s program, as she posted her career scoring high of 11 points against the Frogs as a sophomore in Chantelle is very crafty inside and can shoot the 17- or 18-foot jumper, in addition to the trail 3-pointer, Mittie said. Her face-up game is better than people think. She just needs to get an opportunity to play more than 10 or 15 minutes a game. With her long arms and ability to work inside, I think she is going to be a good fit in our offense. One of the players who have the Frogs most excited about the coming season is Rachel Rentschler. A native of the Fort Worth area, the 6-2 forward saw playing time in 34 games last season for Texas, which reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. She was highly recruited by TCU during a prep career at Fort Worth Christian High School in which she totaled the fourth-most points ever for a Texas high school player. Micaela Younger THE JEFF MITTIE ERA: 9 YEARS I 7 NCAA TOURNAMENTS I 5 NCAA SECOND-ROUND APPEARANCES I 5 TOP-25 TEAMS

10 THE JEFF MITTIE ERA: 9 YEARS I 7 TWENTY-WIN SEASONS I 5 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS I 2 FROGS IN THE WNBA Mittie believes Rentschler will provide the Frogs with yet another big body who is effective both inside and outside the paint. Rachel is a basketball player with very good fundamentals, Mittie said. She shoots the mid-range jumper very well. She goes inside and has good footwork and is very crafty down low. Rachel really understands the game very well, so we will try and move her around as much as we can. THE FRESHMEN Mittie and his staff brought in three freshmen during the offseason who will have the opportunity to earn minutes in their first seasons on campus. Two of the three came from the Texas high school ranks in forward Tolu Omotola from Houston and guard Antoinette Thompson of Fort Worth. Guard Amanda Sims played for one the top prep programs on the west coast at Troy High School in Fullerton, Calif. Thompson is a lightning-quick guard prospect who could be an asset for the Frogs while playing minutes at the point, especially on the defensive end. She twice was named district defensive MVP while playing for O.D. Wyatt High School in Fort Worth before moving on to TCU. Nette has good quickness and the ability to help us out defensively right away, Mittie said. Her decision making is something that will have to continue to get better as she learns the offense. Offensively, her shot has to continue to improve, but she is a player who we feel can give us a change of pace. She will be able to push tempo and speed up the game. Sims put together a decorated career playing prep ball in California. In addition to winning a pair of state titles with the Warriors, she was a two-time league player of the year who averaged 18.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game as a senior. The Frogs will likely play her at the two-guard position as a freshman. Amanda shoots the ball well from the perimeter and has enough athletic ability to get to the rim, but in playing at this level may struggle at first playing with this speed and size on the floor, Mittie said. You have to find your way as a freshman. She also has enough athletic ability to get her own shot, which is something we like in a player. Omotola is a physical power forward prospect who joined the Frogs after playing her senior season at Houston-area Bellaire High School following three seasons at Dulles High, the same school attended by Mangum. Her large 6-3 frame is ideal to help TCU on the inside. We like Tolu s physical presence, Mittie said. She can block shots and go make plays inside. We re probably going to limit her to that early. We re going to try and get her to the rim as much as possible. Tolu just has to learn to play and not give up possessions, just like with any freshman WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Season Preview THE SCHEDULE As usual, TCU has yet another highly competitive schedule featuring some of the nation s top teams lined up for the season. In addition to its usual demanding Mountain West Conference slate, TCU faces a nonconference ledger featuring eight reigning postseason qualifiers, including seven NCAA Tournament teams. The WBCA rated the Frogs non-conference slate as the nation s fourth-toughest for the upcoming season. The campaign starts with a test, as NCAA champion Maryland visits Fort Worth on Nov. 14 for the first of five consecutive home games to open the year. The Lady Terrapins reached the Elite 8 of last season s NCAA Tournament and finished the season ranked seventh in the WBCA coaches poll. Following the clash with the Terps, another NCAA qualifier, UT San Antonio, visits Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on Nov. 16, followed by a cross-town matchup with UT Arlington at home on Nov. 20. Games against Sam Houston State (Nov. 23) and former Southwest Conference rival Houston (Nov. 25) finish off the early homestand. The Maryland matchup is one of several out-of-league contests with the potential to match the Lady Frogs up against a ranked opponent. Back-to-back road trips in mid-december to Oklahoma State (Dec. 14) and Texas A&M (Dec. 21) pit TCU against two other teams that advanced deep into last season s NCAA Tournament. Texas A&M joined Maryland in the Elite 8 after winning the Big 12 Tournament title, while OSU reached the Sweet 16 round. The games against the Aggies and Cowgirls conclude a month-long period that will keep TCU on the road for seven straight games. The team begins the stretch during the Thanksgiving holiday by traveling to Cancun, Mexico, Nov to play a pair of games at the Caribbean Challenge against Boston College and Eastern Michigan. Like the Frogs, BC participated in last season s WNIT. Following its Thanksgiving trip to Cancun, TCU travels to the state of California for three games, beginning with a Dec. 4 matchup against Fresno State, a NCAA Tournament qualifier. The Frogs then move north to Berkeley, Calif., for the Contra Costa Times Classic, which begins with a Dec. 6 matchup against Saint Louis. The Frogs face the winner of the Cal-Princeton contest the following day. TCU returns to campus from Winter Break for a Dec. 30 home tip-off with Metroplex rival SMU, which also advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season. Mountain West Conference play begins with two straight road games, Jan. 7 at Colorado State and Jan. 10 at UNLV. Six of the 16 league contests will pit the Frogs against reigning NCAA qualifiers with two games each against the likes of Utah (Feb. 4; March 7), Wyoming (Jan. 21; Feb. 21) and New Mexico (Jan. 25; Feb. 25). The annual Mountain West Conference Championship returns to Las Vegas, Nev., March 10-14, while the NCAA Tournament First and Second Rounds will be held March at eight predetermined sites. The NCAA Regionals follow March before the 2009 NCAA Final Four is held at the Scottrade Center April 5 and 7 in St. Louis, Mo.

11 Season Notes/Schedule FROGS FACE 13 GAMES VS. REIGNING NCAA TOURNAMENT QUALIFIERS IN TCU is guaranteed to play at least 13 games this season against teams that reached the NCAA Tournament in Overall, 14 possible opponents on the schedule advanced to postseason play. Included in the non-conference portion of the schedule is a three-game stretch against NCAA Tournament qualifiers at Oklahoma State (Dec. 14), at Texas A&M (Dec. 21) and vs. SMU (Dec. 30). That streak extends to five contests in six games. The Frogs visit Fresno State Dec. 4 before tipping off the Contra Costa Times Classic, which will feature one of two matchups against Cal, which joined Fresno in the NCAA Tournament field a season ago. Other NCAA qualifiers that TCU will face during non-conference action include Maryland and UT San Antonio the season s first two contests. The Frogs also have a matchup against a fellow WNIT qualifier in Boston College during one of two games at the Caribbean Challenge over the Thanksgiving holiday. The start of the Mountain West Conference season will bring another set of NCAA Tournament qualifiers, as TCU will play Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico twice each during league action. FROGS IN THE MWC A BRIEF HISTORY TCU may still be regarded as a newcomer to the 10-year old Mountain West Conference, but the program has proven to be a tough adversary to its fellow league teams during a three-year membership in the conference. The Lady Frogs own a all-time record in their three seasons as members of the MWC and finished with their best-ever MWC showing last season at 13-3 to place second. The Frogs finished tied for third in and tied for second in after posting identical 11-5 league marks both seasons. The program s.729 winning percentage over its three MWC seasons ranks second during the period behind only Utah (.792). MITTIE NEARING 200TH VICTORY WITH LADY FROGS Head Coach Jeff Mittie brings a career record into this 17th season as a college women s head coach. Included in that total is a mark in nine seasons with the Lady Frogs. Mittie, who already owns TCU s career record for coaching victories, remarkably set the new program standard for wins in fewer than four seasons when his squad defeated UAB, 74-49, on Feb. 28, He is the only coach in program history to be named conference coach of the year (2001, 2002), win a league regular-season (2001, 2002) or tournament (2001, 2003, 2005) championship, or even to take his team on to postseason play (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008). HOME SWEET HOME AT THE DMC Much of TCU s success over the past few years can be directly related to its ability to defend the home court. The Lady Frogs are 21-3 at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum in their three seasons in the MWC, which is tied for the lead among all MWC teams during the period. TCU is 35-4 in its last 39 games overall held at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The squad s 15-3 record at the DMC last season tied the squad for most home wins in school history. TCU s 15-1 home record in was good for a program-record 93.7 percent winning percentage. The Frogs won 14 straight games to open the season. Counting the campaign, TCU put together a 19-game home win streak, which was the sixth longest in the nation, prior to dropping a decision to Wyoming on Feb. 22, The Lady Frogs own a (.818) home record since Jeff Mittie s arrival on campus prior to the season.
