One if by land: After the past three games, Brandon Buteyn has averaged 109 yards rushing and 199 all-purpose yards. Save the Sting: Under Coach Dahlia, the Spirits are 2-0 against Desert. Bigfoot Sighting: Kyle Steffes may have fallen short on two big field goal attempts, but the junior has 957 yards between his kickoff and punting duties Schedule and Results Top Stopper: After some solid work on defense last week, junior lineman Todd Davis has tied Justin Vargas for the lead in total tackles with 26. Seeing Red: The offense is 8 for 10 (80%) in both red zone scoring and red zone touchdowns. Davis sack-o-meter: Davis picked up a half of a sack against Eastside last week. 4 Darian Thompson Tyler Lynch GAME NOTES The senior linebacker had six tackles last week. On the year, he is tied for second in total tackles with 24. He has four tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, and one pass break up. Justin Vargas Last week: Thompson was another standout on defense against Eastside. He picked up four tackles and one tackle for a loss. The super sophomore also broke up a pass, and had an interception return for 23 yards. On the season: He has a total of eight tackles on the year. Besides Johnny Torsney, Thompson is the only other defensive back with an interception this year. He also leads the team with two pass break-ups. Playing linebacker against Eastside, he was credited for eight tackles and one for a loss of yards. So far this season, Vargas is tied for the team lead in total tackles with 26. He has three tackles for a loss and one sack. On offense at running back, he has 10 yards on four carries and a touchdown. Matt Cordova Cordova picked up two tackles on defense last week and helped stop any idea of an Eastside passing attack. He currently has a total of 13 tackles on the season. On offense, the senior ranks third overall in receiving with one touchdown and 52 yards on three catches. Lavonte Barnett Barnett saw action on both sides of the ball at new positions. He was moved to tight end on offense and defensive end on the opposite side of the ball. He didn t register any yardage on offense, but he had a good first full game on defense. He picked up six total tackles and had one tackle for a loss. So far for the season, he has one reception for 15 yards on offense. On defense, he has seven total tackles and one tackle for a loss. Jordan Rush Brandon Buteyn The senior picked up two tackles last week. He also saw time on the offense line, starting at right guard. Kyland Warren Last week: Buteyn led the team with 108 rushing yards on 11 attempts. 70 of those yards came on one scramble, which also happens to be a team high for the season. On the season: The senior leads the team in rushing (328), scoring (18), allpurpose yards (597) and total offense (341). He s 1 of 2 in passing, for 13 yards, with a pick and a touchdown pass. Buteyn also ranks fourth in receiving with 51 yards on 8 catches. The versatile two-way player factored himself into the game on both sides of the ball once again. On offense, he had one carry for 18 yards. Over on defense, he had six total tackles. On the year, Warren ranks third in total tackles (23). He also has one pass break up. On offense, he ranks third in rushing (42), second in receiving (80), third in all-purpose yards (122), and fourth in total offense (42). Gabe Martinez Martinez took a couple snaps at quarterback for the second consecutive week. In limited action, he was 0 of 3 passing. For the season, he is 1 of 4 for 10 yards. 5 GAME NOTES Cory Rodrigo Kyle Steffes The junior kicker provided tons of leg last week. He was 2 for 2 on PAT s, had 104 yards in kickoffs, and another 295 yards on eight punts. He missed a 53-yard field goal, but Steffes posted a season high 59-yard punt last week. On the season, he ranks third in scoring with eight points. Last week: The senior linebacker made his presence felt last week against the Lions. He lead the team with 14 total tackles and picked up one of two fumbles on the night. On the season: Rodrigo currently ranks tied fifth with 19 for total tackles. He has one tackle for a loss and last week s fumble recovery ties him with John Pratt with one. Dante Donato Donato saw action at running back and at linebacker last week. He gained 28 yards on 11 carries, and scored a touchdown. The senior also had one reception for four yards. On defense, he collected six tackles. After three games, he ranks second in rushing (206), third in total offense (206) and second in all-purpose yards (210). On defense, he has 10 total tackles and half a sack. Robbie Thompson The senior quarterback went 3 of 14 passing for 17 yards and one interception last week. He also saw sometime at receiver and had one rushing touchdown. On the season, he is 23 of 51 passing for 261 yards and three interceptions. He ranks second on the team in scoring (12), and second on the team in total offense with 252 yards. Andrew Culver The senior team captain played well on both sides of the ball last week. He had one tackle on defense, his first for the year. Johnny Torsney John Pratt The senior safety had seven total tackles and one tackle for a loss against the Lions. After three games, he s tied for second on the team with 24 total tackles. Besides Darian Thompson, he has the teams only other interception. Last week: Pratt stepped up and excelled last weekend on defense. In his best showing of the year, he collected eight tackles, one tackle for a loss and recovered a fumble. On the season: The junior is slowly climbing up the charts on defense. He ranks sixth overall with 18 total tackles. He compiled a 12-1 record in 2007 and guided the Spirits to a first place finish in the Olympic League with a 4-0 mark. In addition to being named league champions, Paraclete finished a semifinalist in the Mid-Valley Division with 8 All-CIF selections. Dahlia has complied a 17-9 overall record and a winning percentage of.654 as a varsity head coach. In only two seasons, he has led the Spirits to an impressive 6-2 Olympic League mark. He has also guided Paraclete to the postseason for the past two seasons, after the team missed the playoffs in He has been a member of the Paraclete coaching staff for the past six years. Prior to being named head coach for the 2006 season, Dahlia served as a defensive coordinator on the varsity team from Before that appointment, he served as the defensive coordinator for the junior varsity during the 2003 season. Each year, his teams have become deeper and stronger on paper and on the field. Teams under Dahlia s direction have resurrected and continued Paraclete s strong football tradition. Dahlia began his coaching career as a high school assistant at his alma mater, Burbank High School. He also had stops at John Burroughs High School (Burbank) and Cresenta Valley High School from 1979 to In 2003 he returned to the gridiron with Paraclete. Dahlia is married to Lori Briggs. They have two children: Bobbi Lynn and Dominic. Both Bobbi Lynn ( 04) and Dominic ( 05) are Paraclete Alumni. In addition to his work on the football field, Dahlia and his family are extensively involved with Paraclete on campus and in the classrooms. While he serves as the Facilities Manager, Lori handles Scholarships and Endowment Services. Lori also heads up the popular The Night of Extreme Cuisine. Dominic is also member of the Paraclete varsity coaching staff, while Bobbi Lynn supports the football program both on and off the field.
