TCU battled to wins at Miami (Ohio) and Western Michigan before falling in a hard-fought game at Maryland When it was all over, the Frogs came out with a record the 11th 20-win season in school history and the most wins for the program since Also in , the Frogs reached the second round of the Conference USA Tournament for the second straight year after accumulating an 8-8 conference record the best during TCU s four-year stay in C-USA. Dougherty and the Frogs edged out Marquette in the opening round before falling to NCAA Final Four participant Louisville. During the regular season, TCU recorded key victories over NCAA Tournament participants Texas Tech and UAB, picked up two wins over an NIT-bound Marquette squad and also upended NIT Final Four team Memphis on the road. TCU s march in the National Invitation Tournament marked only the third time in school history that the Frogs reached the tournament quarterfinals. The squad went 7-9 in Conference USA, one of just four leagues in the nation to receive six bids to the 2004 NCAA Tournament. In addition, TCU recorded the program s first victory over a top-10 team since 1990, and grabbed its first conference tournament win since 2000 when the team bounced Marquette from the C-USA Tournament. That final Frog victory was also the 1,000th win in school history and was the second in a four-game winning streak over the tradition-rich Golden Eagles. Dougherty s plan for success, his determination and his style of play re-energized the Horned Frogs fan base. Under his watch, TCU set an all-time arena attendance record when 7,267 fans crammed into Daniel-Meyer Coliseum to watch the Horned Frogs play the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks on Dec. 1, In Head Coaching Experience: TCU (2002-Present) NCAA Tournament Experience: Vanderbilt (1991, 1993); Kansas ( ) National Invitation Tournament Experience: Vanderbilt (1990, 1992); TCU (2005) CAREER RECORD Year School W L Pct TCU TCU TCU TCU TCU TCU/Career Totals CURRENT NBA PLAYERS COACHED Player Current Team Years Pro Nick Collison Seattle SuperSonics 4th Drew Gooden Cleveland Cavaliers 5th Kirk Hinrich Chicago Bulls 4th Raef LaFrentz Portland Trailblazers 9th Paul Pierce Boston Celtics 9th Scot Pollard Cleveland Cavaliers 10th Wayne Simien Miami Heat 2nd Jacque Vaughn San Antonio Spurs 10th FIRST-TEAM ALL-AMERICANS COACHED Player College Years Raef LaFrentz Kansas 1997, 1998 Paul Pierce Kansas 1998 Drew Gooden Kansas 2002 ALL-TIME VS. 3 HEAD COACH NEIL DOUGHERTY the first-ever visit to DMC by a No. 1 team, the Horned Frogs trailed at halftime by just one point, 39-38, against a team that ultimately advanced to the NCAA Tournament s Elite Eight. There is no debating that TCU s strength of schedule has drastically improved since Dougherty s arrival in Fort Worth. Of Dougherty s 153 games at the helm of the program, 17 have been against top-25 teams. To compare, the Horned Frogs played just 19 ranked teams during the entire decade of the 1990s, a span of 303 games. Another tangible sign of Dougherty s impact on TCU basketball is the $6 million Ed & Rae Schollmaier Basketball Complex, the newest Horned Frog athletics facility. The 22,000-square-foot complex, which sits southeast of Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, features office space for the men s basketball staff, two NCAA regulation practice courts, a meeting room, a weight room, a lobby and a courtyard. It was completed in March of 2004, and stands as a model of the university s strong commitment to basketball and Dougherty. TCU has also made its presence known on national television during the Dougherty Era. The Frogs statement game came in February of 2004 in front of an ESPN2 audience as part of Super Tuesday action, as TCU recorded a monumental victory over 10th-ranked Louisville. It was just the fifth win over a top-10 team ever enjoyed by the TCU program. In the contest, TCU held the Cardinals to just 46 points, the lowest output by a Rick Pitino-coached team since his Boston University squad was defeated by Canisius in Since Dougherty took the reins, the Frogs have made more than two dozen appearances on the ESPN network family. As the TCU head coach, Dougherty has accomplished much on the recruiting trail as well, blazing a path through Texas high schools and junior colleges and building relationships with coaches and student-athletes. His current roster boasts eight players from the Lone Star State, an area flourishing with topnotch basketball talent. Under Dougherty s tutelage, former guards Corey Santee and Nile Murry earned all-conference honors. In addition, several former players Santee, Murry, Bingo Merriex, Jamal Brown and Marcus Sloan have continued their careers by playing professional basketball. The Horned Frogs academic performance has also improved. Since the spring of 2003, 16 of Dougherty s student-athletes have received their degrees, while five more will obtain their certificates during the school year. In addition, 11 players have been honored by the conference for their academic prowess over the past four years. After finding ways to compete with nationallyrecognized teams, continued on page 62 THE DOUGHERTY FAMILY: Neil Patrick (left), Ryan, Patti, Coach Dougherty, and Megan PHILOSOPHY On the philosophy of his program: If you want to look at the big picture of it, at the end of the day, I want every kid that has been in our program to tell someone else that they need to come to my school and play for my basketball program. That they have that ownership at the end of their experience here, and encouraging someone else to come. I think if we have kids leaving the program telling other kids to come here, then regardless of whatever happened in between, we did what we needed to do. On his basic coaching philosophy: I think that the first thing that I always talk about is that I want a team that plays very, very hard. Secondly, a team that plays unselfish and plays for each other. I think just accomplishing those big things no matter what we do technically we ll be sound at the end. On his offensive philosophy: I want to be very aggressive. I want to attack the rim first, play inside out, but play very fast, very aggressive, and get to the free-throw line more than our opponent. I think when you re doing those sort of things, you re being effective offensively. Then it just comes down to making shots. On his defensive philosophy: I want us to initiate the action not to sit back. I want to be aggressive defensively, to deny passes, make it very difficult to catch a ball. In our man defense, for example, the goal is to steal the ball, not even to worry about giving up a shot. When you play that way, the aggressive nature of forcing tempo through pressure is exactly what we re after. On the University: The term private school doesn t do it justice. What you have at TCU is a school of genuine selectivity without prejudice. I think the type of kid that comes to school here has the same type of beliefs certain things are important to them. I think education is important. Fellowship and friendships are important. I also believe that we have a very high quality of person going to school at TCU. On the University s growth and construction: Every year that I have been at TCU, there has been a new building being built or recently opened, and it's been a positive influence on this University. TCU has been able to still maintain a private school touch where our students are a name and not a number while continuing to grow with the ground breaking of new buildings for academics, athletics and campus life. On why student-athletes choose TCU: I think they have a lot of different reasons. In the basketball program, ultimately it comes down to playing for me, my coaches, and the program here at TCU. Then you have all the other circumstances. Fort Worth is a very inviting city, the quality of education at TCU is something that they all want to take advantage of. Then they see the level of play that the Mountain West supports it s exciting to them. continued on page 63 61

While TCU struggled to find its feet in the new league, the Horned Frogs upended perennial power Utah on national television, and narrowly dropped decisions in the final seconds at New Mexico and BYU, both of which possessed long home court winning streaks. A longtime assistant coach, Dougherty had been looking for the right head coaching position for several years prior to When the TCU job came open following the season, the young coach knew he had discovered the right fit. And in March of 2002, TCU announced that it, too, had found the perfect match. Prior to coming to TCU, Dougherty, now 45, spent the previous seven seasons at the University of Kansas working as an assistant coach under coaching legend Roy Williams. A recruiting guru, Dougherty helped KU sign eight McDonald s All-Americans during his tenure. He was also responsible for scouting coordination and assisting with supervision of the academic progress of the Jayhawk players. During Dougherty s years on the Kansas staff, KU averaged nearly 30 victories per season and won four Big 12 Conference championships. The Jayhawks captured the NCAA Midwest Regional title and advanced to the Final Four, where they were defeated by the eventual champion Maryland Terrapins. Kansas reached the NCAA Tournament every season during Dougherty s time in Lawrence. The squad spent much of the campaign rated No. 1 in the nation and finished the season with a 35-2 overall mark. Eight of Dougherty s former Jayhawk players are currently in the NBA: Nick Collison (Seattle), Drew Gooden (Cleveland), Kirk Hinrich (Chicago), Raef LaFrentz (Portland), Paul Pierce (Boston), Scot Pollard (Cleveland), Wayne Simien (Miami) and Jacque Vaughn (San Antonio). Dougherty was born in Leavenworth, Kan., on April 14, 1961, and was a standout athlete at Leavenworth High School. He was an allstate guard as a high school senior and also earned honorable mention All-America status. The Leavenworth High basketball team enjoyed tremendous success during Dougherty s years, including a state championship appearance his junior season in the spring of In that tournament, Leavenworth lost to Salina South, but Dougherty made 16 field goals, a Class 4A record that still stands today. Following graduation, Dougherty attended the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. At Army, he was recruited by and played one year for Mike Krzyzewski, now the legendary head coach at Duke. Dougherty played several games as a freshman and was a part-time starter as a sophomore under coach Pete Gaudet. Dougherty transferred to Cameron University for his final two collegiate seasons. He started at point guard as a junior and senior, helping the team to a combined 34 wins in two seasons. Dougherty graduated with a bachelor s degree in education from Cameron in 1984 and earned his master s degree in education at the University of Oklahoma in Dougherty and his wife, Patti, have three children: a daughter, Megan, and sons, Neil Patrick and Ryan. Neil Patrick was a guard on the TCU basketball team from

5 HEAD COACH NEIL DOUGHERTY PHILOSOPHY (continued) On how you ve grown as a head coach: There s nothing that makes you grow more than adversity, and we ve had our share of that. I ve been fortunate in my career where recruiting the best talent in the nation and getting them to play hard is enough. What I ve learned at TCU is how to take more time in breaking down film and finding little areas where you can help put your players in position to win. Now that I ve looked back, I ve definitely learned how to do that. I m looking forward to continuing to recruit more talent, but now I understand the little parts of the game that you can overlook when you have great talent. On himself as a coach: I think I m pretty personable. There s a couple of things about me as a person and a coach that some players might see as a split personality. I like to enjoy the players I like to enjoy them as people, and I have a lot of fun with them. When we get on the court, though, I like to get after it. By nature I m going to be very aggressive, very demanding on the court, and off the court. I like to have a good time with the kids. On the chemistry of the staff: I think it s very good. I love our staff. We get after each other. We have fun with each other. We re with each other all the time it s impossible not to have arguments and not like each other at the same time. We have the right amount of chemistry on our staff for us to be objective, to argue, and to come to a conclusion so we can go full-steam ahead as one. On TCU s player-coach relationships: They re pretty good. I tell the kids right up front that our job is to coach you as a student-athlete, to push you to be the best player you can be, and to push you to be the best student you can be. If at the end of the day, we become friends, then that s the bonus. It s amazing how many times we re on kids and we feel like we re just driving them into the ground, and then the friendship develops out of that. That s what makes the player-coach relationship special. On the Mountain West Conference: I think our league is underappreciated, but I think that s about to change. I think people are starting to see a little bit more of what s gone on here the last few years. We just need to continue to play good basketball and eventually accolades will come to the conference the way they should have been SEASON (9-19 Overall, 3-13 C-USA) Date Opponent Result Score Nov. 22 Sam Houston W Nov. 24 at SMU L (OT) Nov. 30 Washington State W Dec. 3 Texas Tech L Dec. 7 at Baylor W Dec. 10 at North Texas W Dec. 14 Louisiana-Monroe L Dec. 21 at Virginia Commonwealth L Dec. 23 at #20 Tulsa L Dec. 30 Grambling State W Jan. 4 Centenary W Jan. 8 at Southern Miss* L Jan. 11 Cincinnati* L Jan. 14 at DePaul* L Jan. 18 at #15 Louisville* L Jan. 22 Tulane* W Jan. 26 at #10 Creighton L Jan. 29 at UAB* L (OT) Feb. 1 Houston* L Feb. 4 at USF* L Feb. 8 Memphis* L Feb. 12 Southern Miss* W Feb. 15 at Tulane* L Feb. 18 UAB* L (OT) Feb. 22 #11 Marquette* L Feb. 26 at #24 Memphis* L Mar. 1 at Houston* L Mar. 8 USF* W SEASON (12-17 Overall, 7-9 C-USA) Date Opponent Result Score Nov. 22 Texas-Arlington W Nov. 29 Tulsa L Dec. 1 #1/1 Kansas L Dec. 3 Murray State L Dec. 6 at Washington State L Dec. 8 Stephen F. 6 HORNED FROG BASKETBALL RICK CALLAHAN Assistant Coach 6th Year at TCU Division I Coach 28th Year Overall Assistant coach Rick Callahan brings a wealth of experience to the TCU sidelines. The campaign marks Callahan s sixth season on the TCU basketball staff and his 28th year overall as an assistant at the collegiate level. In all, Callahan has been part of 17 postseason teams, nine that received NCAA Tournament berths and eight that played in National Invitation Tournament (NIT). In 2005, Callahan, who joined the Horned Frog program in May of 2002, helped TCU advance to the NIT quarterfinals in the team s first postseason appearance since Callahan s association with TCU head coach Neil Dougherty dates back to 1988, when the two were assistant coaches in the Missouri Valley Conference, Callahan with Wichita State and Dougherty with Drake. The two then became even closer as assistant coaches under Eddie Fogler for six years, four at Vanderbilt and two at South Carolina. Rick brings a large amount of intensity and knowledge of how an entire program should be run from academically to socially to athletically, Dougherty said. He s had his hands in a lot of different areas and knows what it takes to get where we want to go. Callahan came to Fort Worth to work alongside Dougherty after spending the season on Jerry Dunn s staff at Penn State. Prior to coaching with the Nittany Lions, Callahan spent the previous eight seasons ( ) as a member of Fogler s staff at South Carolina. Callahan began his coaching career at Syracuse under long-time mentor and Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim, whose Orangemen won the 2003 NCAA Championship. Callahan started as a graduate assistant in 1980 and was named an assistant coach in At Syracuse, he helped guide the Orangemen to four straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament. After his six-year stint at Syracuse, Callahan moved on to Wichita State, where he teamed up with Fogler, the man with whom he would be associated for the next 15 years. Callahan joined Fogler at Wichita State in 1986 and moved on to Vanderbilt with Fogler in Vanderbilt qualified for postseason play in each of their four seasons and grabbed the 1993 Southeastern Conference title with a school-best 28-6 record. The 1991 and 1993 squads played in the NCAA Tournament, and the 93 team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. In addition, the 1990 Commodores won the NIT. From Nashville, Callahan made the jump to South Carolina with Fogler, where they led the CALLAHAN FILE Hometown: Syracuse, New York Children: Shayla and Zachary Education: Salem College (B.S., 1980); Syracuse (M.S., 1986) Assistant Coaching Experience: Syracuse ( ) Wichita State ( ) Vanderbilt ( ) South Carolina ( ) Penn State ( ) TCU (2002-Present) NCAA Tournament Experience: Syracuse (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986) Wichita State (1987) Vanderbilt (1991, 1993) South Carolina (1997, 1998) National Invitation Tournament Experience: Syracuse (1981, 1982) Wichita State (1989) Vanderbilt (1990, 1992) South Carolina (1996, 2001) TCU (2005) THE CALLAHAN FAMILY: Shayla, Coach Callahan, and Zachary Gamecocks to two NCAA appearances (1997, 1998) and the 1997 SEC Championship. 7 ASSISTANT COACHES JEFF LUSTER Assistant Coach 6th Year at TCU Division I Coach 8th Year Overall An original member of Neil Dougherty s TCU staff, Jeff Luster is in his third season as an assistant coach for the Horned Frogs. Previously, Luster served three seasons as the team s director of basketball operations. Luster, now 36, came to TCU from the University of Colorado, where he served as the director of basketball operations for head coach Ricardo Patton during the season. Jeff is very organized, energetic and is a tireless worker, Dougherty said. He has had, and will continue to have, a positive impact on the TCU basketball program. Before his stint at Colorado, Luster served as associate head coach at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kan. In his lone season at Tabor, the program advanced to the Sweet 16 in the 2001 NAIA Tournament. While at Tabor, Luster s primary duties included on-floor coaching, recruiting, scouting and film exchange. He worked in a similar capacity at the United States Air Force Academy in the season. Prior to his one year in Colorado Springs, Luster spent the campaign serving as both an assistant basketball coach and head golf coach at Lamar Community College in Lamar, Colo. Luster started his coaching career as a student assistant at Tabor College in the season. He then moved on to Central (Kan.) College and McPherson (Kan.) College, where he spent one season on each staff. Luster graduated from Tabor College in 1996 with a bachelor s degree in physical education. As a player, he lettered in basketball and earned second team all-conference honors at guard. Born June 2, 1971, in Colorado Springs, Colo., Luster graduated from Littleton High School in He and his wife, Shay, have three children: Taylor, Payton and Cooper. 8 HORNED FROG BASKETBALL SEAN WOODS Assistant Coach 2nd Year at TCU Division I Coach 5th Year Overall In August of 2006, TCU coach Neil Dougherty announced the hiring of Sean Woods as the Horned Frogs director of basketball operations. Last spring, Woods was promoted to one of the Frogs assistant coaches. Woods, a former college basketball standout at Kentucky, comes to Fort Worth after serving one season as an assistant coach at Texas A&M- Corpus Christi. Woods began his college coaching career as an assistant at High Point, where he assisted in game and practice preparation, player development and scouting, and also helped coordinate on- and offcampus recruiting efforts. During that season, he helped the Panthers corral the top-ranked recruiting class in the Big South. Prior to his time at High Point, he served as an assistant coach at North Broward Prep in Coconut Creek, Fla., where he helped direct the team to a district championship and a second-place regional tournament finish during the season. Woods is known to college basketball fans as one of the Unforgettables (along with fellow seniors Richie Farmer, Deron Feldhaus, and John Pelphrey) on Kentucky s 1992 East Regional final team that lost to Duke in what many experts consider the greatest college basketball game ever played. Woods, who scored 21 points in the contest, banked in an improbable running 10-footer with 2.9 seconds left to give the Wildcats a advantage before Christian Laettner s buzzerbeater propelled the Blue Devils to the Final Four and the 1992 national title. Woods earned a spot on the 1992 NCAAAll-East Regional team for his efforts. Woods, who led the Wildcats in assists in each of his three seasons, ranks fifth on UK s all-time assist list with 482, and his No. 11 jersey was retired by the school and hangs in the Rupp Arena rafters. Over his three-year career, he averaged 8.7 points and 5.3 assists per game. During his time, he was coached by Rick Pitino, Tubby Smith, Herb Sendek and Billy Donovan. Pitino, Smith and Donovan all have won national championships as head coaches. We are very excited to have Sean on our staff, Dougherty said. He has a tremendous background, having played at Kentucky, where he had exposure to some of the best coaches in the game. Sean is great with young people and the team is very excited to have him on board. After graduating from Kentucky in 1992, Woods played for the NBA s Indiana Pacers and ran a popular basketball camp for collegiate and professional players for several seasons.
