TCU Season Preview - Gaining Confidence Sit down with TCU head coach Neil Dougherty for just one minute. It doesn t matter what question you pose to him. Ask him a general question about this year s team. Or to name the biggest change from January of 2004 until now. Or to describe the biggest improvement in any returning player. Or about what the strength and conditioning program is doing for the team. Or, don t ask anything. Just look at his face. Confidence is the answer to everything. The Past Dougherty says that a change in the program occurred on January 3, On paper, it doesn t look like a turning point in TCU Basketball. The final box score reads: Vanderbilt 95, TCU 60. Hardly a game that Frog faithful will remember as one of the all-time greats. But something happened that night. Dougherty remembers the looks on the players faces. They were devastated, confused and angry. He recalls telling them that Vanderbilt was a pretty darn good team that had a pretty darn good night. (Incidentally, that Commodore team that made 12 three-pointers and shot better than 50 percent for the evening reached the NCAA Tournament s Sweet 16 just two months later.) And he remembers knowing that his squad, which at that point owned a 4-7 record heading into the league slate, decided that a night like that wasn t going to happen again. The month of January made the TCU players into believers. While the Frogs had just a 3-4 league record at that point, the losses came to three teams that competed in the 2004 NCAA Tournament and one that reached the NIT. The Frogs were determined to build on the January momentum, and put together one of the most memorable months in a long time. It started on a brisk February night in Milwaukee when TCU stunned 15,424 fans by turning back the Marquette Golden Eagles by a count. Marquette, a Final Four team just 11 months earlier, was victimized on its home floor for just the third time in three seasons, and the Eagles other two losses came to top 10 teams. Then, after splitting their next two games, the Frogs did the unthinkable on February 17, crushing the 10th-ranked Louisville Cardinals by a count in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. It was TCU s first win over a top-10 team since 1990, and came in front of a national television audience on ESPN2. That game served as a statement to the league and the nation that the Horned Frogs were a team to be reckoned with. As the ninth seed in the C-USA Postseason Tournament, the Frogs restated that claim by again defeating Marquette to give the Frogs their first conference tournament win since The Horned Frogs, who opened conference play just four days later, fought hard in a loss to Saint Louis. Then, they picked up back-to-back league victories over Tulane and Houston to move above.500 in Conference USA play for the first time ever. A Chudi Chinweze putback at the buzzer to beat the Cougars snapped the Horned Frogs 13-game road losing streak. Senior point guard Corey Santee is the Horned Frogs offensive catalyst. We re starting to feel more comfortable and confident that we can compete with programs that are further along in their establishment, Dougherty said. Anytime we can compete with a Louisville or Marquette and the other top programs, we are making some serious strides. But merely stating that the team was victorious doesn t tell the whole story. It was just as much about how the team prevailed in those games. The Frogs never trailed in their first win over Marquette. They dominated Louisville from the opening tip in Fort Worth and never relented. After leading the Golden Eagles throughout the bulk of the league tournament game, TCU surrendered the advantage with just a few minutes remaining, then charged back to earn the win. It was more than just a team. It was a confident team. The players thought that they were the better team on those nights, Dougherty said. They realized that collectively, we can win. You don t have to have all the better components to win the game as long as you understand what you need to do and then you go out and do it. When an loss to top-seeded DePaul in the league tournament closed the Frogs chapter (TCU trailed just with seven minutes to play in that game), Dougherty sensed that the team was not satisfied. A season record that included some quality wins late in the year was not enough. The Present and Future That same sense of desire has been carried over to the preseason. A productive offseason in the classroom and in the strength and conditioning program has Dougherty looking forward to practices starting on October 16. He says that the players Senior shooting guard Marcus Shrosphire is one of the league s top outside gunners. showed great maturation by setting their own summer workout schedules and sticking to their plans. I think the returning players are very excited about this season, Dougherty said. They have now gone and done some special things and they understand what you have to do in order to accomplish great things. In addition, the entire TCU community has realized what it takes to bring the Frogs to an elite level. In April, the Ed & Rae Schollmaier Basketball Complex opened, giving the Horned Frogs a basketball-only facility with two full-length practice courts, a weight room and new offices. You can t walk through the building without seeing one of the players doing something to improve himself and ultimately help this team win, Dougherty said. The Schollmaier Complex, along with the new locker rooms, playing floor and lighting system in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, show just how far the program has come in Dougherty s two-plus years at the helm. Now, the Horned Frog head coach is ready to have all of the tangible physical improvements turn into tangible results in the win column. Unlike in the past two transitional years, Dougherty will be able to look down the bench at a full row of familiar faces. In addition to having four of their five starters back from last season (only guard Nucleus Smith, who averaged 8.6 points and 3.8 rebounds, is gone due to graduation), the 11 TCU returnees played 5,038 of the team s total of 5,825 minutes last year (86.5 percent).

And the returning players were productive in , accounting for 86.9 percent of the team s offense and 88.9 percent of its rebounding. The top three scorers (Corey Santee, Marcus Shropshire and Chudi Chinweze) and top two rebounders (Chinweze and Femi Ibikunle) are back in Fort Worth. The extent of TCU s experience is portrayed by the fact that nine different players have started a total of 261 games at the Division I level: Santee (79), Corey Valsin (54), Chinweze (31), Shropshire (30), Ibikunle (28), Nile Murry (19), Marcus Sloan (10), Aaron Curtis (9) and Art Pierce (1). However, even with a more experienced team, TCU will have the challenging task of competing in the tough Conference USA for the final time. Since joining the league, TCU has accrued just a record (.333) in three seasons of conference play. However, the Horned Frogs are coming off a high-water mark of seven C-USA wins, which included three road victories last year. The success of this team will depend on three key things, according to Dougherty. First, TCU must rebound on both ends of the floor. The Horned Frogs continue to be smaller than many of their fellow league teams, and therefore must use solid technique to keep the bigger bodies off the boards. Once again, all TCU players on the floor must be willing to crash the glass, especially on the defensive end. Last year, the team s rebounding by committee was obvious, as no Frog averaged more than 5.0 rebounds per game, but seven players secured at least 3.0 caroms per contest. Second, TCU needs to continue to grow defensively. Dougherty saw last year s team improve more on defense than in any other facet of the game, but he knows that the Frogs must be even better this year. Senior forward Marcus Sloan has led the Frogs in blocked shots two straight seasons. Last season s team allowed 70.5 points per game, nearly 10 full points fewer than the previous season (80.4). Additionally, opponents field goal percentage dipped from 47.4 in to 43.7 last year. A more conditioned team with a better understanding of the defensive concepts should allow that trend of stronger defense to continue. In addition, added depth could allow the Frogs to extend their defense, which will help create the more up-tempo style of play that Dougherty likes. Lastly, the Horned Frogs must develop more scoring options. Last year, defenses were able to key on TCU s perimeter players Santee and Shropshire. Of the team s top five scorers, only Chinweze posed a major inside threat to opposing defenses. However, Ibikunle s improvement late last season and the increased strength of power forwards Marcus Sloan and Art Pierce should give the Frogs more options in the low post. In turn, the presence of inside scoring will help TCU s sharpshooters get more open looks, which were hard to come by late last season. Last year, I gave them two goals, Dougherty said. First, to become physically stronger. We did that. And second, to become a better motion offensive team, which really just means to play better basketball. This year s goals will be pretty much the same. I want to watch the team play more. I don t want to call as many plays. I want them to be able to just play more basketball. The Senior Class The TCU team boasts five seniors, three of whom will finish their careers as four-year letterwinners for the Horned Frogs and are now in their third season with Dougherty. As always, the seniors are the security blanket for the team, Dougherty said. They need to be everything to everyone. We need them to perform at a high level on the court and to lead the team at all times. Headlining the team and the seniors is point guard Corey Santee, who has started 61 consecutive games and has 79 starts to his credit in his first three years. The 6-2 standout from Flint, Mich., will close his TCU career as one of the greatest players to don purple and white. He enters the season eighth on the school s all-time scoring list with 1,331 points and fourth on the career assist charts with 448. Santee has the ability to penetrate the lane and finish plays, can knock down the three-point shot and has the responsibility of managing the TCU offense both on the break and in the half-court set. Santee played some of the best all-around basketball of his career in leading the Horned Frogs last year. A third-team all-conference performer in after averaging a team-high 14.5 points per game, he will be a player to watch for All-Conference USA and All- America teams his final season. Sharpshooter Marcus Shropshire returns alongside Santee to form one of the most potent backcourt combinations in C-USA and the Southwest. Shropshire, who sat out the campaign after transferring from Texas Tech, averaged 13.1 points per game last year, bagged a team-high 76 threepointers and started the final 29 games of the season. Regarded by most as the team s best pure shooter, he has the ability to score points in bunches. A 6-0 shooting guard, Shropshire provides the Horned Frogs with a long-range threat, a high energy level and outstanding leadership skills. Also a prolific Senior forward Corey Valsin has made 34 starts during his three-year career. free-throw shooter, the native of Grand Prairie, Texas, should contend for all-league accolades in Marcus Sloan s development has been impressive throughout his four years at TCU. At 6-8, 225 pounds, Sloan has become more of a physical presence in the paint with added weight and strength. A solid defender with strong technique, Sloan has the chance to become the first player in TCU history to lead the team in blocked shots three consecutive seasons. In addition to his defensive play, the native of Houston has a knack for being around the glass for offensive rebounds. Of his career-best average of 3.5 rebounds per game, Sloan recorded nearly half (45 of 102) of his caroms on the offensive end of the floor. Sloan finished the campaign with a flurry on the boards and will be a key factor in TCU s season. Corey Valsin is another veteran performer who returns for his final season. He has played 87 games over his first three seasons and has 54 starts to his credit. A versatile player, Valsin saw fewer minutes last year as he adjusted to playing down low almost exclusively. He spent much of his first two years at the small forward spot before switching to power forward. At 6-5, 226, Valsin is one of the strongest athletes on the team. A strong defender who can guard players of all positions and sizes, a solid rebounder and a capable scorer, Valsin, who has averaged 5.3 points and 4.2 rebounds over his career, is a valuable component of the Horned Frogs. The final senior is Aaron Curtis, who was the Frogs sixth man in , his first season in Fort Worth. Curtis, who averaged 5.0 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, was a valuable addition to the team after transferring from Lon Morris Junior College. With 12 months in the TCU system under his belt, Curtis is expected to blossom offensively this year. An athletic 6-5, 215-pound swingman,

Curtis can shoot from the perimeter as well as attack the rim. In addition, Curtis possesses long arms and huge hands, which help him to be a solid rebounder. He enjoys playing in the open floor and also has the potential to be a very good defender. The Junior Class TCU s quartet of juniors should give the team leadership and experience to go along with production on both ends of the floor. An athletic group, the junior class is the first contingent entirely recruited by Dougherty s staff. We need to be able to count on the juniors to be consistent performers in practice and on game days, Dougherty said. The transition from being a sophomore to being a junior is an important one. Chudi Chinweze, a 6-7, 222-pound forward, headlines the junior class. Extremely athletic, Chinweze led the team in rebounding (4.9 rpg) last year and finished third on the team in scoring (10.7 ppg). A great leaper, he is equally potent on both sides of the glass. In his two seasons, Chinweze has recorded 118 offensive and 129 defensive boards. The Houston product is a crafty player who has the ability to get off shots despite being outsized. One of the top field goal shooters in Conference USA each of the last two years, he made 55.6 percent of his attempts a year ago. Chinweze, who scores the bulk of his points from inside the paint, has also improved the range on his jump shot in the offseason. The incumbent starter at power forward, figure that Chinweze will add to his 31 career starts. Nile Murry, a transfer from Temple who sat out last year according to NCAA rules, should have a major impact in his first season with the Frogs. After appearing in 64 games in his two seasons with the Owls, making 19 starts, he gives TCU yet another player with Division I starting experience. A comboguard who can play the 1, 2 and 3 spots, he will Senior forward Aaron Curtis served as TCU s sixth man in provide the Frogs with another versatile scorer. Regarded by some as the team s most mature and consistent practice player last year, he should compete for a starting spot at the small forward spot and will at minimum see a good deal of minutes. With a 6-4, 206-pound frame, he is a strong, aggressive player capable of creating offense and guarding talented opposing players. He averaged 4.1 points per game at Temple, but had a career-high 33 during his freshman season. Judson Stubbs enters the TCU program in after transferring from Miami Dade Community College. At 6-7, 225, Stubbs is a physical presence and should also give the Horned Frogs another scoring option in the post. He has the ability to find ways to score and is a strong player on the boards. Stubbs, an experienced international competitor who hails from Nassau, Bahamas, averaged 18.2 points and 9.1 rebounds per game last year in junior college. The junior will primarily play the power forward position, and should mature quickly considering the Miami Dade system is very similar to the one in place at TCU. David Markley, a 5-10, 165-pound guard from nearby Grapevine, Texas, walked on to the TCU basketball program two years ago and has made the traveling squad for every game in his two seasons in purple and white. A quiet leader and outstanding worker on and off the court, he provides depth at the point guard and shooting guard positions. In two years, he has seen action in 23 contests, including 14 league games. He also was one of three Horned Frogs to be named to Conference USA s Honor Roll in The Sophomore Class The maturation process of TCU s four-player sophomore class will have a major impact in the type of season that the Horned Frogs will have in the upcoming year. The group picked up valuable experience as freshmen, with three of the four averaging double figures in minutes. They saw us play well and they saw us play poorly, and they know why we did, Dougherty said. As sophomores, they need to become more precise and more responsible to themselves and the team. TCU s most formidable post player is Femi Ibikunle, a 6-9, 254-pound center who started 28 of the team s 29 games last year as a true freshman. Extremely physical, Ibikunle immediately gave TCU a presence on the defensive end of the floor and on the backboards a season ago. In addition, his offensive game improved tremendously as the year went along. For the season, he finished second on the team in rebounds (4.6 rpg) and also contributed 3.7 points per contest. For his development, the native of Lagos, Nigeria, was named TCU s Most Improved Player following the campaign. A former soccer player, Ibikunle has quick feet and runs the floor well. An intense competitor, Ibikunle heads into the season as the favorite to start at center. Since arriving on campus at 199 pounds, Art Pierce, has bulked up, and now has 240 pounds on his 6-9 frame. Considered a very cerebral player, Pierce should see plenty of action in the upcoming season. A skilled passer who also possesses a soft outside shooting touch, the product of Tyler, Texas, can be a productive offensive player. In addition, the added strength should help Pierce, who uses great form, defend on the low block. Pierce saw nearly 12 minutes of work per game last year and contributed 2.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per contest. Now more comfortable and familiar with the college game, Pierce s shooting percentages from the field (29.4), the threepoint line (19.0) and the free throw line (46.2) should drastically improve. Blake Adams, a 6-5 athletic player on the wing, also figures to have benefitted mightily from a year in the system. As a true freshman, the Houston native appeared in all 29 contests, averaging 11.0 minutes. He contributed 3.2 points per game and showed flashes of his scoring potential, netting back-to-back double-figure scoring games in late December. Armed with a textbook jumpshot and the ability to put the ball on the floor, Adams is a threat to score any time he touches the ball. He should see time at both the offguard and small forward positions, and will need to help the Horned Frogs rebound from both spots. Adams made strides in all areas of his game in , especially on the defensive end of the floor. Neil P. Dougherty, the son of TCU head coach Neil Dougherty gives the Horned Frogs another option in a very deep backcourt. Dougherty is a heady player whose strong work ethic has led to a 20-pound weight gain since arriving on campus. The 6-1 player has the ability to knock down the long-range shot, is an excellent free throw shooter and is also very skilled at getting the team into its offensive set. An extension of his father, Dougherty was a valuable leader as a freshman and should be an even bigger vocal leader this season. He played in 23 games for the Horned Frogs last year, and made impressive adjustments to the speed of the college game. The Freshman Class Despite being small in number, TCU s two-person freshman class should play a role in The adjustment to Division I will be a big change, and the players will need time to learn the system, but athletically the duo is ready to compete. Both kids are extremely hardworking and the fact that they have so many returning players to lean on will be crucial to their development, Dougherty said. There are so many people who are holding that security blanket for them. The first Fort Worthian to stay at home to play for TCU in quite some time is Brent Hackett, a highlytouted guard who can play both the point and shooting guard spots. At 6-3, 185, Hackett is a scoring threat, indicated by back-to-back games of 73 and 52 points for Fort Worth Southwest High School last season. Also a strong ball handler and a physically fit player, he is suited to play an up-tempo style of basketball.he was widely regarded as one of Texas top 15 prospects in the 2004 class after averaging 25.9 points and 8.6 assists per contest. The other member of the freshman class is fellow guard Neiman Owens, who will primarily see time at the offguard spot. Another big, versatile guard (6-4, 180), Owens will fit well into the Dougherty system. Owens has a strong offensive skills package and will compete for valuable minutes as a true freshman. As a prep, he was a well-rounded player who showed the ability to score (18 ppg), rebound (10 rpg) and pass (5 apg). He was ranked among the state s top 25 prospects by the majority of recruiting services.

Head Coach Biography - Neil Dougherty NEIL DOUGHERTY Head Coach 3rd Year at TCU Division I Coach 20th Year Overall Neil Dougherty, the 18th head basketball coach in TCU history, embarks on his third season at the helm of the Horned Frogs' program in Dougherty is coming off a year in which his Frogs more than doubled their league win total from the previous season, recorded the program s first victory over a top-10 team since 1990 and grabbed their first conference tournament win since Dougherty owns an overall record of in two seasons with TCU, including a mark in the highly competitive Conference USA. However, the progress made under the Dougherty regime must be measured by looking at more than just an overall winloss record. In , the Horned Frogs went 7-9 in Conference USA, which was one of just four leagues in the nation to receive six bids to the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The Frogs win total was their most in league play since joining C-USA, and the three conference road victories matched the second most by the program in the past 12 years. TCU s statement game came on Feb. 17 in front of a national television audience as part of Super Tuesday action on ESPN2, as TCU recorded a monumental victory over the 10th-ranked Louisville Cardinals. The Horned Frogs led the game wire-to-wire and had a double-figure advantage nearly the entire second half. It was just the fifth win over a top-10 team ever enjoyed by the TCU program. In the contest, TCU held Louisville to just 46 points, the lowest output by a Rick Pitino-coached team since Pitino s Boston University squad was defeated by Canisius in TCU also became just the third team in the past three seasons, and the only one not rated in the nation s top 10, to win a game against Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis. The Horned Frogs shocker over the Golden Eagles, who reached the Final Four in 2003, came in front of 15,424 partisan fans. The Horned Frogs had Marquette s number again in March, ousting the Golden Eagles in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament with a victory. Not only was the Frogs win the first for the program in a league tourney since 2000, it was the 1,000th win in school history. On Dec 1, 2003, TCU set an all-time arena attendance record when 7,267 fans crammed into Daniel-Meyer Coliseum to watch the Horned Frogs play the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks. In the firstever visit to DMC by a No. 1 team, the Horned Frogs trailed at halftime by just one point, 39-38, to a team that ultimately advanced to the NCAA Tournament s Elite Eight. There is no question that TCU s strength of schedule has drastically improved over the past two years. TCU has competed against 10 top-25 teams in Coach Dougherty s 57 games at the helm of the program. Prior to his arrival in Fort Worth, the Horned Frogs played just seven nationally ranked teams from the season through the campaign, a span of 124 games. In , TCU s schedule featured a total of 11 games against 10 teams that reached the NCAA Tournament. The elite list included: Kansas, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt, Cincinnati, Memphis (twice), Louisville, DePaul, UAB, Charlotte and Murray State. Another tangible sign of Dougherty s impact on TCU basketball is the $6 million Ed & Rae Schollmaier Basketball Complex, the newest Horned Frog athletics facility. The 22,000-square-foot complex, which sits southwest of Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, features office space for the men s basketball staff, two NCAA regulation practice courts, a meeting room, a weight room, a lobby and a courtyard. It was completed in March of 2004, and stands as a model of the university s strong commitment to basketball and Coach Dougherty. The TCU head coach has accomplished much on the recruiting trail as well, blazing a path through Texas high schools. His roster now fields 11 players from the Lone Star State, an area flourishing with top-notch basketball talent. Of the eight players that the Horned Frogs have signed since Dougherty s arrival, seven come from Texas. Dougherty also brought exposure to TCU by claiming a national championship of his own following the season, when he was named the

Head Coach Biography - Neil Dougherty best-dressed coach in college basketball by CollegeInsider.com. Dougherty was the first Runway to the Fashionable Four rookie to win the 65-person event in his inaugural appearance. In the season, a Neil Dougherty bobble head doll will be unveiled. In his first season with the Frogs, the Horned Frogs sported a 9-19 overall record, which included a 3-13 mark in Conference USA play. However, the season will be remembered as the one that built the foundation for future successes at TCU. Dougherty instilled a new system that stressed teamwork, accountability and toughness. He showed the Frog faithful what kind of playing style and effort to expect from a Neil Dougherty team. A longtime assistant coach, Dougherty had been looking for the right head coaching position for several years. When the TCU job came open following the season, the young coach knew that he had discovered the right fit. And on March 25, 2002, TCU announced that the university, too, had found the perfect match. Dougherty, now 43, had spent the previous seven seasons at the University of Kansas working as an assistant coach under Williams. A recruiting guru, Dougherty helped KU sign eight McDonald s All- Americans during his tenure. He also was responsible for scouting coordination and assisting with supervision of the academic progress of the Jayhawk players. During Dougherty s seven years on the Kansas staff, KU averaged nearly 30 victories per season while winning four conference championships.
