2 Head Coach Neil Dougherty 2nd Year Overall (2nd at TCU) Neil Dougherty, the 18th head basketball coach in TCU history, embarks on his second season at the helm of the Horned Frogs' program in A longtime assistant coach, Dougherty had been looking for the right head coaching position for several years. When the TCU job came open following the season, the young coach knew that he had discovered the right fit. And on March 25, 2002, TCU announced that the university, too, had found the perfect match. I ve always said that I would never want to go somewhere just for the sake of either wanting to coach, or to become a head coach, Dougherty said that day. I felt like I was doing what I wanted to do all along as a coach at the University of Kansas and living in Lawrence, Kan. That was important to me, but the Fort Worth area is so attractive to me. I just knew deep down that my family would enjoy it, which made this job even more attractive. In his first season with the Frogs, the team sported a 9-19 overall record, which included a 3-13 mark in Conference USA play. However, success in his inaugural year cannot be measured merely by wins and losses. Instead, the season will be remembered as the one that built the foundation for future successes at TCU. Dougherty instilled a new system that stressed teamwork, accountability and toughness. In his first season at TCU, he showed the Horned Frog faithful what kind of playing style and effort to expect from a Neil Dougherty team. My style of play was shaped by my background, Dougherty said. I want to play a very uptempo style of basketball. I want to run very hard to the offensive end with great organization. I want to have the defense on their heels when we re coming at them offensively, and I want the offense on their heels because we re coming at them defensively. When you watch our teams play, I hope people will think, They play unbelievably hard, unbelievably unselfishly and they compete to win. If that s what people are saying about us, then we re probably doing what I m trying to accomplish. He also has accomplished much on the recruiting trail, blazing a path through Texas high schools and landing a 2003 class that has been rated in the nation's top 30. His roster now fields 11 players from the Lone Star State, an area flourishing with top-notch basketball talent. It is truly a privilege to recruit a person of Neil s caliber to TCU as our head men s basketball coach, TCU Athletics Director Eric Hyman said upon hiring Dougherty. He brings to us a wealth of experience not only on the court but off of the court. He was a top recruiter for Kansas with Texas as one of his primary recruiting areas. He has a tremendous basketball background, playing for Coach K (Mike Krzyzewski), coaching with Eddie Fogler at Vanderbilt and South Carolina and coaching with Roy Williams at Kansas. Dougherty s Career Record Year School W L Pct TCU TCU TCU/Career Totals Dougherty, 42, had spent the previous seven seasons at the University of Kansas working as an assistant coach under Williams. A recruiting guru, Dougherty helped KU sign eight McDonald s All- Americans during his tenure. He also was responsible for scouting coordination and assisting with supervision of the academic progress of the Jayhawk players. During Dougherty s seven years on the Kansas staff, KU averaged nearly 30 victories per season while winning four conference championships. The Jayhawks captured the NCAA Midwest Regional title and advanced to the Final Four where they were defeated by the eventual champion Maryland. Dougherty arrived in his home state of Kansas after serving two stints under Fogler at Vanderbilt and South Carolina. He worked four years as an assistant with the Commodores ( ) before spending two seasons in a similar capacity with the Gamecocks ( ). Prior to his four-year stay at Vanderbilt, Dougherty worked as an assistant coach at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, during the campaign. He became acquainted with Fogler through Drake s competition with Fogler s Wichita State team in the Missouri Valley Conference. Before his year at Drake, Dougherty coached four seasons at his alma mater, Cameron University ( ). Cameron posted a record in his final two years in Lawton, Okla. Dougherty was born in Leavenworth, Kan., on April 14, 1961, and was a standout athlete at Leavenworth High School. He was an all-state guard as a high school senior and also earned honorable mention All-America status. The Leavenworth High basketball team enjoyed tremendous success during Dougherty's years, including a state championship appearance in the spring of 1978 when he was a junior. In that tournament, Leavenworth lost to Selina South, but Dougherty hit 16 field goals, a Class 4A record that still stands today. Following graduation, Dougherty attended the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. At Army, he was recruited by and played one year for Krzyzewski, now the legendary head coach at Duke. Dougherty played several games as a freshman and was a part-time starter as a sophomore under coach Pete Gaudet. Dougherty transferred to Cameron University for his final two collegiate seasons. He started at point guard as a junior and senior, helping the team to a combined 34 wins in the two seasons. Dougherty graduated with a bachelor s degree in education from Cameron in 1984 and earned his master s degree in education at the University of Oklahoma in Dougherty and his wife, Patti, have three children: a daughter, Megan, and sons, Neil Patrick and Ryan. Neil Patrick is a freshman guard on the TCU basketball team. 3 TCU Tidbits Series History TCU has never beaten Louisville in three previous meetings, all of which have come since the two became Conference USA foes in the season. The Horned Frogs suffered an defeat to the 15th-ranked Cardinals in Freedom Hall last year in the most recent matchup. This is the first-ever trip to Fort Worth for the Cardinals. TCU s average margin of defeat is 15.0 points. The closest contest was a Louisville win in the first meeting, on Jan. 12, 2002 in Louisville, Ky. Individuals Against the Cardinals Below is a list of how TCU players have done in their previous meetings with Louisville. TCU started out 2-8 in conference play in both and A TCU victory would push the Frogs to 6-5, which would match the best league start in the last five years and would equal the program s second-best start in the last 11 campaigns. The only time TCU had a better 11- game league record than 6-5 was in , when the Frogs began 11-0 en route to a 14-0 Western Athletic Conference mark. Where Are We? The Horned Frogs are coming off a three-game road trip that spanned 12 days and included stops in Milwaukee, Tampa and New Orleans. This is TCU s first home game in the month of February. The last home game was a loss to Memphis on Jan. 31. The Horned Frogs had not played three straight on the road since the season. TCU has another road game on Saturday (at East Carolina), meaning that the team will have played four road games in 19 days after playing four road contests in the season s first 73 days. Closing In On 1,000 TCU is just three victories shy of the 1,000th in the program s 93-year history. The Horned Frogs currently own a all-time record. Winnin and Grinnin TCU has already recorded two more conference wins (5) this season than the team did in all of the 2003 league season (3). With six games left to play, TCU is already just one win short of tying the Frogs best Conference USA season. TCU had six league victories (6-10 record) in its first C-USA season of In addition, TCU reached its win total from last year (9) in 20 games. The team finished 9-19, earning its final victory in the last game of the season. Taking the High Road Prior to a one-point loss at Tulane, TCU had won two straight conference road games in the same season for the first time since 1998, when the Frogs went 7-0 away from home in the Western Athletic Conference. The three-game road trip was a nailbiter, as the three games were decided by a total of just 10 points. If You Come to a Fork in the Road, Take It TCU, 3-2 this year in league road matchups, has already surpassed the number of Conference USA away wins that the program had in its first two years combined. TCU is now 5-16 (.238) all time in Conference USA road contests. The team went 2-6 in and 0-8 in TCU s victories are over UAB and Tulane in 2002 and Houston, Marquette and USF in With one more away victory, TCU would ensure itself of just its second.500 or better league road record in the past 12 seasons. The three league wins already match the second-most wins by a TCU team over that stretch. Conference Home and Road Records Year Conference Road Home Overall SWC SWC SWC SWC WAC WAC WAC WAC WAC C-USA C-USA * C-USA Close Encounters Of the Conference Kind Excluding TCU s 28-point loss at Cincinnati and 12-point win over Southern Miss, TCU s remaining eight league games have been decided by just 39 points, an average of 4.9 per game. TCU s five conference wins are by a total of 27 points, an average of 5.4 per game. Figured in are four wins by six points or less (Tulane 70-65, Houston 55-54, Marquette and USF 54-51). The Frogs were 1-4 in their first five regular-season games decided by 10 points or less. Since then, TCU is 4-3 in the close contests. Cardiac Kids Each of TCU s last four games have been decided by six points or less, and TCU is 2-2 in those games. In addition, each of those games has been a one-possession game in the final 30 seconds. The last two games have seen critical shots misfire in the waning moments. USF s Terrence Leather had a contested 23-foot three-point attempt at the buzzer carom off the rim last Monday which would have sent the game into overtime. Then on Saturday, down one with four seconds remaining, TCU s Marcus Shropshire s fade-away 17-foot jumper was short off the front iron and the Horned Frogs were unable to get a tip-in to drop as time expired. Earlier in the season, the Horned Frogs Chudi Chinweze had a game-winning putback at the buzzer to defeat the Houston Cougars Doing Double Time TCU has played at least 10 players in each of the first 20 games of the season. All 10 of those Horned Frogs are averaging more than 10 minutes per game. Horned Frog Basketball Game Notes - Page 3 Fort Worth: Where the Best Begins TCU has already hosted then-no. 1 Kansas and 22ndranked Vanderbilt this year prior to taking on No. 9 Louisville in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on Saturday. It is the first time that the Horned Frogs have played at least two top-25 teams at home in the same season since the campaign and it is the first time that TCU has ever hosted three top-25 teams in the same campaign. Against the Best After falling to the Cincinnati Bearcats on Jan. 17, the TCU Horned Frogs are now (.110) all time against teams ranked in the nation's top 25. TCU's last victory over a ranked opponent came just over three years ago on Feb. 15, 2001, when the team downed No. 20 Fresno State in Daniel-Meyer. Since that time, the Frogs have lost nine straight to top-25 squads. TCU is 4-34 (.105) all time against top-10 squads. Have Ball, Will Play Louisville will be the ninth ranked opponent that TCU has played in Coach Dougherty s 50th game at the helm of the program. Prior to his arrival, the Horned Frogs played just seven ranked teams from the season through the campaign a span of 124 games. While TCU is 0-8 against top-25 teams under Dougherty, TCU had secondhalf leads at No. 10 Creighton (L, 79-89) and home against No. 11 Marquette (L, 68-79) in and this season led No. 1 Kansas after intermission before falling in Daniel-Meyer. A Little Help From the Three Ball In TCU s nine wins, the Frogs are 59-for-153 (.386) from trey land, while in the 12 losses, the team is 77-for-252 (.306). TCU connected on a season-high 12 three-pointers out of 23 attempts against Marquette. As Long As the Rim Is 10 Feet, Who Cares? TCU owns a better overall shooting percentage at home this year, but surprisingly, the Horned Frogs are shooting a higher percentage from three-point range and from the free throw line on the road this season. Road Home Field Goals (.397) (.421) 3-Point Field Goals (.364) (.321) Free Throws (.695) (.645) Committee on the Boards TCU currently does not have a player averaging more than 5.0 rebounds per game this season, as Femi Ibikunle leads the squad with an average of 4.9. Since the season, no player has ever led the Frogs with fewer than 5.0 boards per game. The lowest average over that time was in the season when Paul Kapturkiewicz had a teambest 123 rebounds in 24 games (5.1 per contest). Tightening Up the D TCU is holding its opponents to just 68.8 points per game, which is the best figure for a Horned Frog team since , when opponents averaged 66.3 points. TCU allowed 80.4 points per game last year as teams shot 47.4 percent from the floor. This year, TCU is limiting opponents to 43.3 percent. Clamping Down TCU has kept 18 of its first 21 opponents under the 80- point mark. Last year, the Frogs allowed fewer than 80 points just 10 times in 28 games. In addition, TCU has held five teams to 60 or fewer points already this year. The last time TCU held at least five teams to 60 or under was in Shutting Down the Unranked While TCU s season defensive average is 68.8 points per game, the three teams ranked in the top 25 when the schools met (Kansas, Vanderbilt and Cincinnati) averaged 88.3 per tilt. That means the the rest of the teams TCU has played are scoring at just a 65.5 clip.

4 TCU Tidbits What Have You Done For Me Lately? Since opening the season 1-4, the Horned Frogs have played.500 basketball, having been victorious in eight of the last 16 games. Different Strokes For Different Folks TCU is averaging 75.0 points per game in the team s nine victories, topping the 70-point mark in six of those games. In the Frogs 12 losses this year, the team is averaging 60.2 points per game and has not broken 70 in any contest. Defense Wins Championships In TCU s nine victories, its opponents have shot just 38.7 percent (191-for-494) from the field, while in the Frogs 12 losses the opposition has made 46.6 percent of its attempts (323-for-693). It s 80s Night TCU is now 7-28 (.200) under Coach Dougherty when scoring fewer than 80 points and 11-3 (.786) when reaching the 80-point mark. TCU has scored 1,469 points (81.6 points per game) in Coach D s 18 victories and 1,965 points (65.5) in the 31 losses. Showing Improvement When Getting to 70 TCU was winless (0-9) when scoring fewer than 70 points in the campaign, but this season, the team is When the Frogs reached 70 points last season, the team went This year s squad is a perfect 6-0 when getting to the 70-point plateau. Some Future Hall of Famers In the Bunch TCU has faced a number of successful coaches this season, including six that have combined for a total of 13 Final Four appearances and own four national titles. In the distinguished group below, Knight, Huggins, Calipari and Pitino all began the season ranked among the top 12 active coaches in winning percentage. Below is a list of the coaches and their NCAA Tournament accomplishments. Coach Current School Dick Bennett Washington State * Guided Wisconsin to the 2000 NCAA Final Four Bill Self Kansas * Led underdog Tulsa to the 2000 Elite Eight (2000) Bob Knight Texas Tech * Directed Indiana to three NCAA Titles (1976, 1981, and 1987) and Final Fours in 1973 and 1992 Bob Huggins Cincinnati * Took the Bearcats to the 1992 Final Four John Calipari Memphis * Made a trip to the Final Four with UMass in 1996 Tom Crean Marquette * Coached the Golden Eagles in the 2003 Final Four Rick Pitino Louisville * Steered Kentucky to the 1996 NCAA Title and the 93 and 97 Final Fours and Providence to the 1987 Final Four. Subs Point Production Sinking Since Chudi Chinweze and Marcus Shropshire joined the starting lineup, the TCU bench has not been as potent on the scoring end. With the duo coming off the bench in the first nine games of the season, TCU averaged 32.4 bench points per game and outstcored its opponents Since they cracked the starting lineup 12 games ago, TCU has averaged just 15.9 points from the substitutes and have been outscored from the opponents bench by a margin. The Team s Nucleus Nucleus Smith has been a vital player for the Frogs in his senior season. He is averaging 24.8 minutes per game, six more than his previous career best. The 6-2 guard is grabbing 4.0 rebounds per game, the third most on the team. In addition, Smith has scored when called upon, reaching double figures in five of his last seven contests. Included was a 16-point outburst at Marquette, his best total since his freshman year. Here s Something to Chudi On Chudi Chinweze currently ranks second in Conference USA in field goal percentage at.567 (80-for-141). He had season highs in points (18) and rebounds (12) at Houston, recording the Frogs lone double-double of the season in the process. He also put back a Marcus Shropshire miss with no time remaining to give the Horned Frogs a thrilling victory. Here Comes Santee Claus TCU junior guard Corey Santee became the 27th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau when he scored 16 on Dec. 10 in Lubbock. The native of Flint, Mich., now has 1,209 career points, which ranks 14th. He is on pace for 1,738 points, a figure that would rank second in school annals behind only Darrell Browder (1,886). Carven Holcombe (1,734) and Dick O Neal (1,723) are currently second and third respectively. Santee poured in a season-high 25 points at USF and has averaged 20.0 points per game over the last five games, going 36-for-70 from the field (.514). Stepping It Up a Notch Corey Santee ranks 13th among C-USA players in scoring in all games at 14.2 per contest, while Marcus Shropshire is 16th at However, in league games, Santee sits in seventh place (15.8), while Shropshire rates eighth (15.0 ppg). In conference games, the two starting guards are contributing 48.2 percent of the team s points (308 of 639). Gimme Femi Femi Ibikunle has started all 21 games thus far for TCU, making him the first true freshman to start the first 21 games of a season since Juan Bragg in Bragg, who opened all 26 games, was the Southwest Conference Newcomer of the Year. Since 1990, just three true freshmen have started at least 26 games in a season for TCU (Damion Walker-27, Jeff Jacobs-27 and Bragg-26). Shrop Til You Drop Junior transfer Marcus Shropshire has led TCU in scoring a team-best 11 times through 21 games and has reached double figures in 14 of the last 17 games. He also owns three of TCU s five 20-plus scoring games of the season, notching 26 against Grambling State on Dec. 29 and registering a career-high 29 points against Southern Miss on Jan. 28. The 29 points were the most by a TCU player since Junior Blount had 33 at SMU on Nov. 24, He had a game-high 20 at Marquette, keyed by making his first four three-point attempts in the game s opening seven minutes. On Dec. 10, Shropshire dropped in a then-career-best 18 points against his former team, Texas Tech. Sixteen of his team-high sum came after intermission. Marcus, Don t Shrop Shootin Em After starting the year 1-for-3 from the free throw line, Marcus Shropshire has nailed 38 of his last 39 shots from the charity stripe. He made 26 straight free throws prior to a miss in his final attempt at Houston on Jan. 13. On Jan. 28 against Southern Miss he was 10-for-10 from the line and became the 13th player in TCU history to be perfect from the line with at least 10 free throw attempts in a game. Now Starting... The TCU Horned Frogs have eight players on the team s roster who have started at least 10 games at the Division I level. Corey Santee (71 starts) leads the way. He is followed by Corey Valsin (54), Nucleus Smith (32), Chudi Chinweze (23), Marcus Shropshire (22), Femi Ibikunle (21), Ronald Hobbs (21) and Marcus Sloan (10). The only other player who has started a game is Aaron Curtis (9). Horned Frogs at Home TCU has compiled a record of 354 wins and 210 losses (.628) in the 564 games at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum since Since the season, the Horned Frogs sport an overall home record of 237 wins and 90 losses (.725) in 327 games. Horned Frog Basketball Game Notes - Page 4 And This Backcourt Will Be Back In their first year as backcourt running mates, juniors Corey Santee and Marcus Shropshire have become one of the most prolific scoring backcourts in Conference USA. Here is how the duo has performed against fellow starting backcourts in C-USA play. Low Points, But Not a Low Point TCU s victory over USF on Feb. 9 was the Horned Frogs lowest point total in a victory since a win over Iowa State in San Juan, P.R. on Nov. 29, The previous low winning total for TCU under Neil Dougherty was 55 earlier this year against Houston. In addition, the 51 points for USF were the fewest by a TCU opponent since the Frogs defeated Princeton on Dec. 18, 2000 in Fort Worth. Got One of Two Against the Final Four TCU played two of the four teams that appeared in the 2003 NCAA Final Four, Kansas and Marquette, and split the two games. TCU had a second-half lead against KU on Dec. 1 before falling and earned an road victory over MU on Feb. 3. Shock the World TCU picked up its biggest victory of the Neil Dougherty era and one of the best in recent memory on Feb. 3 at Marquette. Marquette owned a 10-1 home record this season and had won 41 of their last 43 in the Bradley Center over the last three years prior to the Frogs upset win. Before TCU, the only teams to leave Milwaukee with a W in the last three years were then-no. 2 Louisville (73-70) on Feb. 15, 2003 and then-seventh-rated Cincinnati (85-73) on Jan. 14, Family Ties Neil Dougherty is coaching his son, Neil P. Dougherty, a freshman guard. It is just the second father-son, coachplayer duo in C-USA history. The only other father-son duo in league history was when former Memphis coach Larry Finch, coached his son, Larry Finch, Jr., from The Dougherty duo is not a Sr./Jr. combination because the coach s given name is Cornelius Aaron Dougherty, while the player is Neil Patrick Dougherty Liftoff in Houston The Horned Frogs picked up a buzzer beater win over Houston on Jan. 13 in the Space City. Down one with 5.0 seconds to play, TCU inbounded the ball to Marcus Shropshire, who dribbled past midcourt and fired up a contested, offbalance runner from 17 feet. The shot bounded off the rim to Chudi Chinweze, whose putback narrowly beat the red light. 50 Wasn t So Nifty The 50 points scored against the Saint Louis Billikens were the fewest for the Horned Frogs since a loss to the Princeton Tigers on Dec. 28, 1993, at the NDB Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis, Ind.

5 TCU Tidbits Making News at 10 When Marcus Shropshire led the Horned Frogs in scoring with 10 points against Washington State on Dec. 6, it marked the lowest point total for a TCU high scorer in more than a decade. The last player to lead TCU with 10 or fewer points was Tim Chase (10) on Jan. 9, 1988 in a loss at Arkansas. It Was Ladies Night TCU hosted the first annual Coach D s Basketball Clinic for Women on Jan. 27 at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The TCU coaching staff and players hosted 68 women who were eager to learn more about the sport. The women were treated to a fashion show, listened to Coach Dougherty speak and had question and answer sessions with the TCU coaches. All proceeds will go to Project Purple, which provides TCU game tickets to underpriviledged children in the Fort Worth area. Tonight s Marketing Promotions The TCU Athletics Department issuing a challenge to Purple Out the DMC for the Louisville game by encouraging everyone in attendance to wear purple. In addition, the first 500 students will receive a free purple t-shirt courtesy of Rosa's Cafe and the first 200 students will receive free pizza rolls courtesy of Double Dave's Pizza. For Purple Mountains Majesty On Jan. 30, TCU announced that the university will join the Mountain West Conference beginning in the basketball season, which will give the Mountain West a nineteam league. The schools that currently comprise the MWC include: Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming. Don t Mess With Us in Texas The TCU basketball staff has made an imprint in the Lone Star State. Of TCU s 14 players on this year s roster, 11 hail from the state of Texas, which is up from six just last year. Of the eight players that the Horned Frogs have signed since Dougherty s arrival, seven come from the Lone Star State. What s Going on Outside the Coliseum? The $6 million Ed & Rae Schollmaier Basketball Practice Facility is currently being constructed southwest of Daniel- Meyer Coliseum on the grounds formerly occupied by the baseball stadium. TCU broke ground on the project in July of 2003, and the complex is expected to be finished in March of When completed, the 22,000-square-foot complex will feature office space for both coaching staffs, two NCAA regulation practice courts, meeting rooms, weight room, a lobby and courtyard. New Signees TCU Head Coach Neil Dougherty has announced that the Horned Frog men's basketball program has secured the talents of a pair of high school standouts from the state of Texas for the season. Brent Hackett, a 6-3, 185- pound guard from Fort Worth (Southwest H.S.), and Neiman Owens, a 6-4, 180-pound guard from Channelview (Channelview H.S.), signed during the early period. Hackett, who can play both guard positions, was rated as the No. 13 prospect in Texas by Mike Kunstadt of the Texas Basketball Review. As a junior, he averaged 26.5 points, 8.5 assists and 4.3 steals per game for the Raiders. The state's third-leading scorer in Class 4A, Hackett was named second-team all-area by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Owens averaged 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists per game as a junior for the Channelview Falcons. The comboguard was widely-regarded as one of Texas' top 20 prospects as a junior. In addition, Owens is currently rated 30th nationally among all shooting guards by Hoopmasters.com. At the 2003 adidas ABCD Camp, he was rated as the fifth-best high school shooting guard.
