TBA The Pittsburg State University men s basketball team makes its official season debut Friday (Nov. 11) when the Gorillas take part in the South Central Regional Challenge at Stephenville, Texas. Pitt State will open the two-day, classic-format tournament against Eastern New Mexico at 5 p.m. Friday, then take on the host school, Tarleton State, at 7 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 12) at Wisdom Gym. The RECORDs Pitt State returns four starters and nine lettermen from a squad that posted a overall record (9-13 MIAA). The Gorillas narrowly missed qualifying for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament in head coach Kevin Muff s initial season. The Gorillas dropped an decision to No. 13 ranked Kansas in an exhibition game at Allen Fieldhouse on Nov. 1. Eastern New Mexico is coming off a campaign in The Hounds split a pair of exhibition games this month, dropping a decision to New Mexico State on Nov. 2 before claiming a win over Division I UTEP (Texas-El Paso) the next day (Nov. 3). Tarleton State posted a 24-6 record in , making an appearance in the NCAA-II National Tournament. The Texans will make their season debut against Southeastern Oklahoma Friday, putting a 17-game home winning streak on the line against the Savage Storm. The Coaches Pittsburg State s Kevin Muff is in his second season leading the Gorillas. Muff (Kansas State, 86) became the Gorillas 14th all-time head coach on Apr. 5, 2010, after spending 12 seasons at Cloud County Community College, where he helped the Thunderbirds to an average of 21 wins in each of the last five seasons. [for complete biography, see page 6] He has a record in his short tenure with the Gorillas. Andrew Helton begins his third year as head coach at Eastern New Mexico and his third season as a collegiate head coach. Helton (Miami, Ohio, 1992) has compiled a (.434) record in his short tenure at ENMU. Lonn Reisman enters his 24th year as head coach at Tarleton State. Reisman (Pitt State, 77) has guided the Texans to a (.697) record. He is 1-0 vs. his alma mater. SERIES HISTORY Pitt State will meet both Eastern New Mexico and Tarleton State for just the second time in school history this weekend. The Gorillas are 1-0 against the Hounds, claiming an victory over ENMU on Dec. 18, 2004, at Las Vegas. 2 SCOUTING THE GORILLAS Pitt State returns five of its top six scorers and 72.7 percent of its offensive production from the season. The Gorillas will have the services of their top scorer from last season - senior guard Eric Ray - for the first time this season at the South Central Regional Challenge. Ray (6-2, 183) suffered a non-basketball injury to his right hand in mid-october and missed the exhibition game against KU.. The Topeka native, who averaged 12.2 points and 2.7 assists per game last year, is expected to return for regular season play in two weeks. Ray was an honorable mention All-MIAA performer last year. Senior forwards Eric Marshall (9.8 ppg) and Andra Bailey (9.2 ppg) and junior guard Courtney Ingram (9.0 ppg) all return after scoring nine or more points per game. Bailey (6-4, 203), also an honorable mention All-MIAA selection a year ago, averaged a team-leading 8.2 rebounds per game, blocked a team-best 21 shots and logged a team-leading 42 steals in The St. Louis native shot 52.6 percent from the field (92 of 175) tops among PSU s returners. Marshall (6-5, 230), from Detroit, Mich., averaged 4.0 rebounds and blocked 19 shots in 23 games played. Ingram (6-3, 210), a Tulsa, Okla., native missed 16 games due to injury last year, but he chipped in with 9.0 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in 10 games played as a sophomore. Junior forward JaVon McGee, a Kansas City, Mo., native also chipped in with 8.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game last season. McGee (6-6, 224) shot 50.0 percent from the field (86 of 172). Senior guard Adrian Herrera made a team-leading 33 3-point field goals a year ago. The Topeka native converted 33 of 90 (.367) long-range attempts, while averaging 5.3 points per game. As a team, Pitt State shot 47.2 percent from the floor ( ), 34.1 percent from 3-point range ( ) and 66.6 percent from the free throw line ( ) in Defensively, the Gorillas held their opponents to 45.7 percent shooting from the field ( ), 37.2 percent shooting from 3-point range ( ) and 69.2 percent shooting from the foul line ( ). Among the Pitt State newcomers, junior guard/forward Marky Nolen joined the Gorillas from Seward County Community College, where he was a second-team All-Jayhawk Conference performer a year ago. Nolen (6-3, 195), a Wichita native, averaged 12.2 points and eight rebounds per game while helping the Saints to a 23-7 record. Freshman guard Sam Pugh came to Pitt State from Branson (Mo.) 6 Kevin Muff, Head Coach Kevin Muff was named Pittsburg State University s 14th Head Basketball Coach on April 7, He took over for former head coach Gene Iba, who retired after 15 seasons as the Gorillas head coach. Muff, 47, a former assistant coach at Pitt State from , returned to campus after serving 12 seasons as head coach at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kan., where he averaged 21 wins per season over the last five years. In his first season leading the Gorillas, Muff guided Pitt State to a overal record and a 9-13 mark in MIAA play. As an assistant coach at Pitt State in the early 1990s, Muff helped the Gorillas post a 21-8 record during the campaign the school s first 20-win season in two decades. That Pitt State squad rose to a top 10 national ranking and the Gorillas upset No. 1 ranked Washburn, 72-71, before a school record crowd of 5,000 fans at John Lance Arena on Jan. 18, Pitt State narrowly missed the NCAA Division II National Tournament that year at the time only four teams in each region qualified for the postseason and the Gorillas finished the season ranked fifth in the South Central Region. Since leaving the Pitt State staff in 1993, Muff watched closely as Iba took over the Pitt State program in July 1995, leading the Gorillas to an MIAA regular season title and a No. 1 national ranking in 1999, 40 consecutive home floor victories and five trips to the NCAA-II National Tournament, including three straight 24-win seasons from , and a Sweet 16 run in Prior to his assignment at Cloud County, Muff coached five seasons at Wamego High School, leading the school to a Kansas Class 4A state runner-up finish in He was named the Flint Hills Area Coach of the Year during the season. He served as the top assistant at Pittsburg State from 1991 to 1993 under former head coach Dennis Hill, after serving as a graduate assistant for the Gorillas in Prior to joining the Pitt State staff, Muff served as an assistant basketball coach at Atwood High School from He served as a student assistant coach at Kansas State University under former Wildcats head coach Lon Kruger during the season. Muff, a member of the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, served as the president of the Kansas Jayhawk Conference Basketball Coaches Association from He was extremely active in the community of Concordia, Kan., serving as a volunteer coach for Concordia Youth Basketball and a volunteer for Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Cloud County.
