The seventh-seeded Gorillas and second-seeded Mules will face off in a best two of three games series beginning at 3 p.m. (CDT) Friday (May 3) at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field. The series will continue with a 1 p.m. contest Saturday (May 4) and a third game at 1 p.m. Sunday (May 5), if necessary. Tickets for the MIAA Tournament First Round are $5 each with all general admission seating. Children six and under get in free. In other MIAA Tournament first-round action, No. 8 Fort Hays State University visits No. 1 seed and MIAA regular season champion Missouri Western State University, No. 5 seed Emporia State University travels to No. 4 seed University of Central Oklahoma and No. 6 seed Northeastern State University faces No. 3 seed Missouri Southern State University. The four series winners advance to the MIAA Tournament Final Four May 9-11 at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan. THE RECORDS Pitt State posted a overall record, including a MIAA mark, during the regular season. The Gorillas closed out the regular season by winning two of three games in a weekend series against Northwest Missouri State University in Pittsburg Apr The Gorillas 26 wins are the most since the 2006 squad posted a record and Pitt State s.553 winning percentage is its best since the 2005 squad posted a.580 percentage (29-21). UCM posted a 34-9 regular season record, including a 28-8 MIAA mark. The Mules closed out the regular season on a five-game winning streak, sweeping a three-game weekend series from Emporia State Apr UCM also took two of three games from MIAA champion Missouri Western the previous week. The Mules, who are ranked No. 7 in this week s ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Poll, have won 30 or more games for 20 consecutive years. UCM has won no fewer than 43 games in every year since THE COACHES Matt Murray is in his first season as head coach at Pitt State and his first year as a collegiate coach, posting a record. [for full biography, see page 3] Prior to assuming the head coach position for the Gorillas on June 1, 2012, Murray spent five seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at UCM. He helped the Mules to three NCAA Division II College World Series berths (2008, ) as well as three MIAA regular season titles and four MIAA Tournament championships during his five seasons. Prior to joining the UCM staff, Murray served as an assistant coach at Kansas State University in Tom Myers is in his sixth season at head coach at UCM, compiling a (.794) overall record and leading the Mules to three trips to the NCAA Division II College World Series. The Pitt State graduate served as an assistant coach at Kansas State University from and an assistant coach at UCM from and again in 2003 when the Mules captured the NCAA Division II National Championship. He served as an assistant coach for the Gorillas in He is 17-1 against his alma mater. SERIES HISTORY UCM holds a commanding (.859) advantage in the all-time series against Pitt State, including 12 straight wins. The Mules hold a 39-3 (.929) advantage over the Gorillas in games played at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field. * MIAA game MIAA TOURNAMENT, FIRST ROUND MAY 3-5,

2 Pitt State is currently riding a three-game winning streak after finishing the regular season with two wins and earning the first-round tournament victory against Truman. The Gorillas posted a win over Missouri Southern on Feb. 27, before rolling to an victory over Emporia State Saturday (Mar. 2). Central Missouri had won four straight contests before falling to Washburn in the regular season finale, 95-78, at Topeka. With the loss, UCM was forced share the MIAA regular season title with Fort Hays State and the Mules slipped to the No. 2 seed in the tournament. UCM finished the regular season 19-7 overall, including a 13-5 mark in conference play. PSU, UCM IN THE MIAA TOURNAMENT This will be the Gorillas ninth all-time appearance in the MIAA Postseason Tournament, the first since the 2004 season. Pitt State has a (.480) record in the conference tournament. The Gorillas are 1-2 in three tournament games against the Mules and 5-5 in tournament games played at Warrensburg, Mo. Pitt State dropped an 11-0 decision to UCM in the first round of the 2004 tournament. The Gorillas lone MIAA Tournament win over the Mules came in the 1999 tournament finals with Pitt State claiming an 8-7 win on May 9, The 1999 victory stands as the Gorillas lone MIAA Championship in program history. UCM has won or shared 23 MIAA titles all-time. The Mules have captured the MIAA Tournament championship in each of the past three seasons; and UCM has won the MIAA Tournament 20 times in program history. ALL-TIME RECORDS Pitt State has compiled a (.517) all-time record in 34 seasons of intercollegiate play. The program competed in the NAIA from before it was discontinued to due budget restraints. The program was restarted in 1991 as a member of NCAA Division II and the MIAA. UCM has compiled a (.720) all-time record in 57 seasons. SCOUTING THE GORILLAS As a team, Pitt State is batting.313 and scoring 6.6 runs per game. The Gorillas have a 5.03 team ERA and a.962 fielding percentage defensively. The Gorillas rank fifth in the MIAA in batting average (.313), tied for 8th in run scored (309), ninth in RBI (266), second in triples (15), eighth in home runs (29) and fifth in steals (66). 3 Junior third baseman Brad Foss leads the Gorillas and ranks 10th in the MIAA in batting average (.376). Senior outfielder Ryan Ventura ranks in a tie for fifth place in the league in runs scored (49) and second in the conference in stolen bases (18). Junior outfielder Tory Stoffregen ranks 10th in the MIAA in RBI (44), tied for sixth in the league in doubles (17), tied for fourth in the conference in triples (4) and tied for fifth in the league in stolen bases (15). Senior first baseman Ryan Bilovesky ranks in a tie for fifth place in the MIAA in home runs (10). Junior righthander George Brandecker (5-3), who earned MIAA Pitcher of the Week honors after one hitting Missouri Southern on Apr. 24, leads the MIAA in lowest opponent batting average (.210) and ranks second in the league in ERA (2.25). Senior lefthander Matt Stalcup (6-3, 3.41 ERA) leads the MIAA and ranks second in NCAA Division II in strikeouts (13.3 K/9 IP) and ranks second in the MIAA in opponent batting average (.223). He also is tied for third in the conference in victories (6). Redshirt freshman righthander Ryan McKay (3-1, 1.52) leads the MIAA in appearances (27) and ranks in a tie for eighth place in the conference in saves (4). SCOUTING THE MULES As a team, UCM is batting.334 and scoring 8.7 runs per game. The Mules have a 3.78 ERA and a.973 fielding percentage defensively. The Mules lead the MIAA in runs scored (372), RBI (341) and stolen bases (80) and rank third in the league in batting average (.334). UCM also leads the league in ERA (3.78), opponent batting average (.253), saves (16) and fielding percentage (.973). Junior outfielder Kevin Gratza ranks fourth in the MIAA in batting (.409). Junior shortstop Samuel Domingue ranks second in the conference in runs scored (53). Junior outfielder Brad Wilson and senior third baseman Kyle Grieshaber share the team lead and rank fifth in the league in RBI (51). Junior righthander Travis Higgs (5-1) ranks sixth in the MIAA in ERA (3.25) and third in the league in opponent batting average (.239), while junior lefthander Zach Davis (1-1, 2.82 ERA) is tied for second in the conference in saves (6). Senior righthander Andrew Urban also is 4-2 with a 2.82 ERA and five saves, making a team-leading 23 appearances. Matt Murray, Head Coach Matt Murray became the third all-time head coach in the 33-year history of the Pittsburg State University baseball program on June 1, We are very excited to have Matt Murray join the Gorilla family as our new head baseball coach, PSU athletics director Jim Johnson said. Matt has enjoyed tremendous success as a coach in each of his previous assignments and he was very articulate in laying out his vision and blue print for the future of Pitt State baseball. We are looking forward to Matt coming on board and helping us move forward with the Gorilla baseball program. During the past five seasons, Murray has served as assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator for the Mules. He helped guide UCM to three NCAA Division II World Series berths (2008, ). The Mules captured three MIAA regular season titles and four MIAA postseason tournament championships during his five seasons in Warrensburg, Mo., including both MIAA regular season and tournament crowns this past spring. Prior to joining the UCM staff, Murray served one season as an assistant baseball coach at Kansas State University in He also served for six years as an instructor and head baseball coach at Claremore (Okla.) High School, from He compiled 151 victories and a.760 winning percentage while guiding CHS to three straight Oklahoma Class 5A state championship game appearances, capturing state titles in 2003 and His 2005 squad was ranked No. 11 nationally in the final USA Today prep poll. In 2003, Murray earned Oklahoma Class 5A state coach of the year honors from both the Oklahoma Coaches Association and the Tulsa World. Murray also served as an assistant coach at Claremore from 1998 to 2001, helping the squad to a Class 5A state title in 1999 and a runner-up finish in Murray got his coaching start in 1994 as the Claremore American Legion Coach. He played his high school ball at Claremore as well, winning a Class 4A state championship in A graduate of Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla., Murray was a member of the 1996 conference title (OIC) squad. Murray earned his master s degree in sports administration from Central Missouri in He and his wife Jennifer, also a Claremore native, were married in They have a two-year-old son, Reed, and an infant son, Grant.
