It is also a historical game because this is the first football game between the State of Delaware s two Division I programs. It has also taken on national attention because of the national football playoffs and the stories ran on ESPN s national sports magazine show Outside the Line along with espn.com. The Hornets are the champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Blue Hens finished third in the Colonial Athletic Association Southern Division. The CAA placed a record five teams into the national playoffs, while the MEAC has one team. The Hornets are really the new kid on the block in reference to the national playoffs as the 15 other teams in the Sweet 16 have playoff experience. This is the Hornets first step into postseason competition. 2 The Coaches 2 Delaware State Alton Al Lavan (Colorado State 70); at DSU (fourth year); career; 0-0 vs. Delaware Lavan was appointed head coach of the Hornets on January 2, This is his first head-coaching job. The Fort Pierce, FL native has more than 30 years of professional and collegiate coaching experience. In 2005, Lavan led the Hornets to their first winning record since The team was 7-4 overall, and third in the MEAC with a 6-2 record. The conference mark was DSU s best since Delaware State was picked to finish sixth in the 2005 pre-season MEAC poll. The 2005 season also marked the first time since 1985 that the Hornets posted an undefeated record at home (5-0). Prior to accepting the Delaware State position, Lavan served two seasons as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University. He was promoted to assistant head coach for the 2003 football season, and upon the late-season firing of then-head coach Jeff Woodruff, Lavan was named interim head coach. After taking over the 1-8 team, Lavan led Eastern Michigan to a 2-1 record in its final three games. In more than 18 years as a NFL assistant, Lavan s resume includes stints with the Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens, and Kansas City Chiefs. He was a member of George Seifert s 1990 Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers coaching staff. That team included former Delaware State University standout John Taylor, who caught a touchdown pass in the 49ers win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV. While in Dallas, Lavan worked under Hall of Fame head coach Tom Landry. He helped Cowboy running backs Tony Dorsett and Herschel Walker combine for six 1000-yard seasons. He helped lead Dallas to three NFC title games, division titles in 1981 and 85, and wild card playoff berths in 1980 and 83. Lavan has also served as position coach for NFL all- stars Roger Craig, Priest Holmes, Tom Rathman, Ernest Byner, Robert Newhouse and Bam Morris. Lavan s collegiate coaching tenure includes stops at Colorado State, Louisville, Iowa State, Georgia Tech, Stanford, and Washington. After a standout career as a defensive back and kicker at Colorado State University, Lavan was selected by the NFL s Philadelphia Eagles in the eighth round of the 1968 draft. He also played two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons before his professional career was cut short by a neck injury. Strength & Conditioning. Delaware - K.C. Keeler - The University of Delaware football program turned to one of its own on March 5, 2002 as former Blue Hen standout linebacker K.C. Keeler was introduced as the new head coach. At the press conference announcing his hiring, the energetic Keeler vowed to bring championships back to the University of Delaware. It took him only two seasons to fulfill those promises. The 2003 squad capped a magical year by posting a 15-1 record, capturing a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference title, and sweeping through the NCAA I-AA playoffs to win the 2003 I-AA national title. He followed that up with another Atlantic 10 Conference title and a berth in the NCAA I-AA quarterfinals to highlight the 2004 campaign. In five seasons at the helm of the Blue Hens, Keeler owns an impressive overall mark of (.651), including a mark of (.595) in league place. In 14 seasons overall as a college head coach, his mark stands at (.7648). His young and injury-riddled Delaware squad posted a 6-5 record in 2005, winning its final two games - both on the road. The injuries continued during the 2006 season as the Blue Hens fell to a final record of 5-6, the first losing season in Keeler's 14 years as a head coach. Despite the losing record, four of the losses were by just seven points or less. Of his 22 losses at Delaware, a remarkable14 have been by just seven or less points. he Blue Hens, who in 2003 won the sixth national title in school history, the first since winning the 1979 NCAA II championship, and its first ever crown in I-AA, completed the most dominating playoff run in I-AA history. Delaware outscored its opponents by a combined margin of and posted the first ever championship game shutout with a 40-0 blanking of previously unbeaten Colgate in the national title game in Chattanooga, TN Dec. 19. In addition to the NCAA and Atlantic 10 titles, Delaware was also honored with the Lambert Cup Trophy and the ECAC Team of the Year award as the top team in the East and also was honored as the area Team of the Year by the Philadelphia Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association and the state Team of the Year by the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association. In addition, the team was ranked No. 1 in the final The Sports Network and USA Today/ESPN Top 25 polls. Keeler and his wife, Janice, have two children, daughter Kate (18) and son Jackson (16). 2

3 3 UPDATE: The South Carolina State Bulldogs edged out the defending MEAC champion Hampton Pirates by six points to hold the first place positioning in preseason predictions. The Bulldogs, who celebrate 100 years of football this season, tallied eight first place votes and 266 total points. The Bulldogs finished the 2006 season tied at second place with a 6-2 conference record and a 7-4 overall finish. Graduating 20 seniors from last year s squad, the three-time defending champion Pirates were picked to finish second. The Pirates received seven first place votes and 260 total points. Delaware State rounds out the conference s top trio with a third place predicted finish. The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, who suffered their first losing season in nine years last year, was picked to finish fourth while interstate rival Florida A&M was selected to finish fifth. Morgan State, Norfolk State and Howard were picked to finish sixth, seventh and eighth. They are also ranked 8th in the country in scoring with a 38.9 points per game average and 10th in the country in passing offense at yards per game. Leading the Blue Hens is senior quarterback Joe Flacco who has completed 251 of 370 passes for 3,185 yards and 17 touchdowns. Their top ground gainer is Omar Cuff who has scored an amazing 29 touchdowns this season and has rushed for 1,369 yards on 290 carries. Flacco s top receiver this season is Aaron Love with 55 receptions for 741 yards and three touchdowns. In the national stats, Flacco is ranked 7th in the country in total offense with a yards per game and Cuff is #1 in scoring with an 18.0 per game average. Hornets Had Another Successful Season at Alumni - Since Coach Lavan took over the helm of the Hornets in 2004, he has made Alumni Stadium a winning home. In his first season, the Hornets went 3-4 on the home field, and included in the three wins was an upset over conference power Hampton (28-23). Over the pass three seasons they are 14-1 (..933 %) including this season. The Hornets went 5-0 in his second season and 4-1 last season and 5-0 this season. Going back to last season, the Hornets have won their last eight home games... Special Teams Are Special & Ranked in the Nation - Hornet Special Teams have played a major role in their success this season. Presently as a team the Hornets are ranked 6th in the country in kickoff returns with a 24.5 yards per return average. The Hornets have scored 247 points in 11 games including last week, 92 of those points have directly come from special teams. 57 points have come by field goals, six by kickoff return, 22 by points after touchdown. The Hornets have blocked three kicks and on the other hand their kickers have had great games also. Punter Josh Brite has five touchbacks, nine fair catches and has punted inside the 20 sixteen times. Kicker Riley Flickenger who handles kickoffs has been impressive averaging 58.5 yards per kick which is #1 in the MEAC. Place kicker Peter Gaertner is 22 of 23 in PAT s and 19 of 25 in field goals with his longest at 45 yards. 3

Senior All-America candidate Shaheer McBride became the Hornets All-Time receiver in both receptions and receiving yards and he is now two touchdowns away from breaking the touchdown reception record. He presently has 33 career TD s and tied with John Taylor for the record with 33. Last year he moved up to the number two spot in the career receiving category for the Hornets. McBride s 206 receiving yards against St. Francis last season was the third best in a game in team history. John Taylor had 223 yards vs. St. Paul s in 1985 and David Jones tallied 213 vs. North Carolina A&T in McBride s day was second-best among FCS (formerly I-AA) receivers last season. Alex Watson of Northern Arizona had a 214-yard receiving day on August 31. 5 GAERTNER 5 BREAKS SEASON AND CAREER MARKS Senior place kicker Peter Gaertner has broken the DSU season and career field goal mark It was Gaertner s kick that sent the MEAC championship game into overtime in the Hornets win over Norfolk State. His 39 yard field goal with 6:16 left in the third quarter tied the season and career marks at 16 and 40 made and his kick that sent the game into overtime with no time on the clock broke both marks giving him season and career records in field goal kicking. He held the season record of 16 field goals made in 2005, but he broke David Parkinson ( ) career mark of 40 made. Peter has a career mark of 43 of 58 (71%) made during his career. He has also kicked a career 67 of 70 point after touchdowns, giving him 193 career points. 6 GREEN S 6 RETURN GET S NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT - Akeem Green s fumble return finished 2nd in the voting for the Pontiac Game Changing Performance to LSU s play. The 100- yard fourth quarter fumble return for a touchdown attracted national attention for the Hornets. ESPN s SportsCenter selected Green s return as number two in its Top 10 plays for the day. In addition, the play was among four nominated for ESPN s Pontiac Game Changing Performance for all of college football that weekend. The play selected by fans as the top performance earns a $5000 scholarship for the school. Fans across the country were able to vote until last Wednesday on ESPN.com. Morgan State was leading when halfback Courtney Anderson appeared headed for a two-yard touchdown run. Anderson had the ball knocked loose by Delaware State linebacker Josh Pope just short of the goal line, and Green scooped it up about seven yards into the end zone. He returned the fumble all the way down field for a touchdown to give Delaware State a lead with 9:11 left in the fourth quarter. The fumble return is the longest in college football this season, and the longest in school history. FUMBLE RETURN GOING INTO NATIONAL RECORD BOOK - Akeem Green s 100 yard fumble return last week is the longest this season in the nation. The fumble return category is listed in the NCAA FBS records, but not in the FCS records. The national record in the FBS is 100 yards, held by three - Paul Rivers of Rutgers (vs. Pitt, 10/28/95), Dan Dawson of Rice (vs. UNLV, 11/14/98) and Kevin Thomas of UNLV (vs. Baylor, 9/11/99). According to the NCAA Statistical Service, the category will be added this season to the FCS records. JR - QB WINTON IS A WINNER Junior quarterback Vashon Winton has been a major part of the Hornets rise over the past three seasons. Including this years 10-1 run so far, Winton has an impressive 25-7 record as a starter. He was the 2005 MEAC Rookie of the year when he led DSU to a 7-4 finish. In MEAC competition he has an impressive 19-3 record as a starter. He has also moved up to the #2 spot on the DSU career passes completed mark with 331. Going into the national playoffs, he has completed 375 of 659 passes (57%) for 4,218 career yards. It was the Norfolk State game last year that Winton suffered an ankle injury that caused him to miss the final game against Howard.. Against Norfolk two weeks ago, he completed 28 of 44 passes for 413 yards. He has moved up to the #2 spot on the all-time career passing yard mark at DSU behind Rahsaan Matthews 8,073 yards. WINTON NAMED MEAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK Junior quarterback Vashon Winton was named the MEAC Player of the Week for his performance in guiding the Hornets to the biggest comeback in school history. Down 21-3 with eight minutes left in the game last against Norfolk State, he led the Hornets to 25 unanswered points. He finished the game completing 28 of 44 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 61 yards on 18 carries, giving him 306 total offensive yards. HORNETS RANKED 8th IN THE COUNTRY IN SACKLS ALLOWED - Offensively the Hornets have struggled for consistency, but protection for junior QB Vashon Winton has been a major plus. Going into the playoffs, the Hornets have not allowed but 10 sacks on the season. MOVING ON UP All-America candidate Shaheer McBride has broken all of DSU s receiving records and going into the final regular season left he is moving up the MEAC All-Time Receiving latter in both receptions and yards. RICHMOND AND GAERTNER NAMED TO CoSIDA ESPN THE MAGAZINE - District 2 ALL ACADEMIC TEAM The College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) has announced that Delaware State University placekicker Peter Gaertner (sr., Berlin, Germany) and center Nick Richmond (r-so. Lampeter, PA) have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 2 football team. Each is now qualified for selection to the Academic All-America team. Gaertner is a Banking/Finance major in DSU master s program, and has a 3.80 cumulative grade-pointaverage. Last spring, he was named to the inaugural National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame National Honor Society. This season, Gaertner is tied for the MEAC lead with 15 field goals (15-for-21). He has also connected on 17-of-18 extra point tries. Gaertner, a two-time MEAC Special Teams Player-of-the-Week, has kicked the game-winning field in the final seconds of the last two games. Richmond is a Sports Management major with a 3.62 GPA. He has started each game at center for the Hornets this season. Richmond is a mainstay of the offensive line, which has helped DSU rank first in the MEAC and 10th in the nation in sacks allowed (0.89 pg). 6

The Chanticleers drove 45 yards to the Delaware State 25 on the final possession, but time expired before they could get off another play. Jones, who played two seasons at Syracuse before enrolling at Delaware State, scored the game s first touchdown on a 63-yard run to give the Hornets a 7-3 lead with 10:38 left in the first quarter. He also had a 74-yard kickoff return to set up a 30-yard Peter Gaertner field goal that gave Delaware State a lead with 8:23 left to play. McBride had 81 yards on four receptions to become the Hornets career leader with 2501 receiving yards. He surpassed former leader Albert Horsey ( ) on a 53-yard touchdown catch on a pass from Vashon Winton to give Delaware State a 20-6 lead with 6:50 left in the third quarter. The Hornets improved to 2-0 overall, while Florida A&M fell to 0-2. Delaware State has won three in a row over Florida A&M for the first time in the history of the series, which began in The Hornets have also opened a season with back-to-back wins for the third straight year. Winton completed 17-of-25 passes, including touchdown strikes to Shaheer McBride in the second quarter and William Griggs in the third quarter. After a scoreless first quarter, Delaware State used a big play on special teams to jump out in front. Two plays after Alimayo Wilder blocked a punt by Florida A&M s Wesley Taylor, Winton and McBride connected on an 11-yard touchdown pass to give the Hornets a 7-0 lead with 10:00 left in the second quarter. 10 10 GAME - 3 HORNETS FALL TO KENT STATE Kent, OH - Delaware State trailed just 7-0 after 30 minutes, but faltered in the second half of a 38-7 loss to Kent State before 8,455 fans at Dix Stadium Saturday afternoon. The contest was the first for Delaware State against a Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly D-IA) team since The win improved the Golden Flashes to 2-1, while the Hornets suffered their first setback of the year to fall to 2-1. Kent State scored 24 unanswered points in the second half to open up a 31-0 lead. Delaware State avoided the shutout by scoring a touchdown in the final minute, but Kent State s Shawn Bayes returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to close out the scoring. The game was scoreless when Delaware State failed to take advantage of two Kent State turnovers in the second quarter. A fumble recovery by Ryan Robinson gave DSU the ball at the Kent State 34, but the Hornets failed to pick up a first down. An interception by James Romain gave DSU a possession at midfield, but the Hornets again failed to move the ball. Kent State finally broke the deadlock when Julian Edelman connected with Bayes on a 42-yard touchdown with 1:37 left in the second quarter. The play capped off an eight-play, 94-yard drive. The Hornets improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the MEAC, while the Pirates lost for the first time in four games, all against conference opponents. Hampton was ranked 13 th in the latest SportsNetwork poll of FCS (formerly Division I-AA) teams. Vashon Winton connected with tight end Jeff Postell on a fiveyard scoring pass with 11:39 left in the fourth quarter for the game-winning score. Kareem Jones rushed for 135 yards, while Winton rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another to lead the Delaware State offense. The Hornet defense recorded a season-high five sacks. Joe Mendes had two sacks, while linebacker Josh Pope had a game-high 10 tackles. Hampton scored on the game s first possession when Jerry Cummings capped off a four-play 75-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown run. The big play in the drive was a 59-yard pass from T.J. Mitchell to Jeremy Gilchrist. Gilchrist had eight receptions for 177 yards, but was held to two catches for 21 yards in the second half. 11 11 GAME - 5 HORNETS TOP BCU Dover, DE - Delaware State is 3-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) for the first time since 1993 after a win over Bethune-Cookman at Alumni Stadium Thursday evening. The Hornets won their second straight to improve to 4-1 overall, while the Wildcats lost their third in a row to fall to 2-4 overall and 0-4 in the MEAC. Delaware State s Vashon Winton and Shaheer McBride connected on two touchdown passes after the score was tied at 10 late in the third quarter. McBride hauled in a 37-yard pass from Winton to give the Hornets a lead with 12 seconds left in the third quarter. The duo struck again on a 24-yard scoring pass with 5:57 left to play to give the Hornets a two-touchdown lead. McBride out leaped two Bethune-Cookman defenders in the endzone on a "fleaflicker" play for his second score. McBride, Delaware State s career leader in receptions and receiving yards, had five catches for 111 yards in the contest. He now has 170 receptions for 2,747 yards and 29 touchdowns with the Hornets. John Taylor, who starred with the NFL s San Francisco 49ers after four years at Delaware State, is the school s career leader with 33 touchdown catches. After a scoreless first quarter, Bethune-Cookman struck first when quarterback Jimmie Russell capped off a 16-play, 80-yard drive with a three-yard keeper to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 8:51 left in the second quarter. Russell rushed for 175 yards on 27 carries. He also completed seven-of-16 passes for 102 yards. Delaware State was stymied on offense for much of the first half, but caught a big break when Bethune-Cookman lost a fumble on its own seven-yard line late in the second quarter. North Carolina A&T is 0-7 overall and 0-4 in the MEAC. The Aggies have lost 23 straight games, the longest streak in the nation, dating back to the 2005 season. The Hornets won their fourth straight to improve to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Delaware State is tied with Norfolk State for first place in the MEAC standings. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Bears, who fell to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in league play. Morgan State was leading when halfback Courtney Anderson appeared headed for a two-yard touchdown run. Anderson coughed up the ball just short of the goal line, and Green scooped it up about seven yards into the end zone. Gaertner nailed a 36-yard field goal as time expired to give the Hornets a dramatic come-from-behind win over Winston-Salem State to the heartbreak of 15,432 homecoming fans at Bowman Gray Stadium Saturday. Delaware State (8-1) trailed before scoring 11 points in the last 5:31 to win its sixth straight. Last week, Gaertner hit a 38-yard field goal with 2.6 seconds left to give the Hornets a win over South Carolina State. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for Winston-Salem, which fell to 5-4. A six-yard fumble return for a touchdown by William Hayes gave Winston-Salem a lead with 8:11 left in the third quarter. The Hornets used a long fourth quarter drive to get back into the game. Chris Strother capped off the 13-play, 86-yard drive with a two-yard run to pull the Hornets to within with 5:31 left to play. Quarterback Vashon Winton s two-point run evened the score.
