He is long, athletic and only going to get better. Guys like that, love that type of athleticism. He needs to go left better, he needs to offensive rebound more. He needs to get inside more. You saw Montrezl (Harrell), we ran a low post play, and what does he do, he took a turnaround 18-foot jump shot right. What the pros want to see is get in that low post, go to your jump hook, turn over your shoulder, and take that. They have a lot of guys that can make fade away 18 footers, and it s the same with Rudd. He is terrific on the perimeter, so he needs to get in there, and dominate the interior with some offensive moves. Every power forward in college wants to be a small forward, every small forward wants to be a two guard, and every center wants to be a power forward, but they don t realize what the pros look for, they just listen to people... I hope he makes it, because he is quite an athlete. - Rick Pitino, Louisville head coach on USF forward Victor Rudd following the Bulls latest game against the Cardinals WHICH WAY IS THE WEIGHT ROOM?» The Bulls got things done in the weight room as a whole this summer, but a few players definitely stood out. Zach LeDay improved his bench press by 85 lbs, now maxing out at 275, and added 1.5 inches to his vertical (now 38.5). Javontae Hawkins upped his vertical two inches to 42, and added 60 lbs to his bench. A freshman, Chris Perry has already improved his bench numbers from lbs, and upped his vertical from 33.5 to 37.5 inches. 3 #SCTOP10 USF has had four plays on the SportsCenter Top 10 this season, the latest was a one-handed alley-oop dunk against UCF on Feb. 15 which was the No. 1 play that night on ESPN. The pass was from fellow senior Martino Brock. It was the second No. 1 play by Rudd in as many weeks as one week earlier, Rudd threw down a one-handed dunk against Rutgers on Feb. 8 which was the No. 1 play that night on ESPN. The first two were during USF s three-game nail-biting win streak and both to break ties. The first was a 10-foot shot by Corey Allen Jr to break a tie with 2.5 seconds remaining in a win at George Mason which was the No. 6 play on Dec. 4. The second was an alley-oop pass from Anthony Collins to Victor Rudd from between the half-court and three-point lines to give USF a lead with 52 seconds remaining in regulation, the No. 2 play on Dec. 17. USF won the game in double-overtime. RUDD s OT TAKEOVER Victor Rudd was enjoying a good game at in-state rival UCF, but it was time to end it. The senior forward scored eight of the Bulls nine points in overtime as USF jetted out to a six point lead and settled for a one-point win on Feb. 5 in Orlando. He took all of USF s five shots in the extra period (4-of-5). Rudd scored a season-high 25 points and added 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. He was very consistent on the day shooting 11-of-19 from the field. RUDD AT 1,000 Senior forward Victor Rudd became the 18th player at USF to score 1,000 career points when he did so on Jan. 28 in the Bulls win over SMU. His 1,000th point came in the most obscure method, technical foul free throws following the violation to SMU s Nic Moore early in the second half. Rudd accomplished the feat in three seasons after totaling 38 points as a freshman at Arizona State ( ). OFFENSE SHINES AGAINST TOUGH DEFENSE On Jan. 28, USF played an SMU team which ranked second in the NCAA in field goal percentage defense (36.2 percent). The Bulls entered the contest having not scored more than 58 points in each of its previous four games. USF then showed why the game is played on the court and not on paper as it shot 53.1 percent against the Mustangs. The best shooting percentage against SMU up to that point had been Houston s 47.8 percent effort on Jan. 26. WELL-ROUNDED RUDD Victor Rudd has played a more well-rounded game this season. His assist total of 47 is more than all of last year when he had 32 assists in 30 games. PAINTING When USF scored 54 points in the paint at UCF, it was the most since recording 54 on Feb. 27, 2010 in a win by the Bulls. When USF defeated SMU on Jan. 28, it was the first time the Mustang s had been outscored in the paint all season (38-28). The Bulls have outscored their opponents down low on the season. USF RUNS ON DUNKIN Through 27 games, the Bulls have recorded 110 dunks, an average of 4.0 per game. Freshman John Egbunu has led the rim-rattling with 45 dunks (page 7). The only game in which USF did not recorded a dunk was on Jan. 4 against Houston. DIFFERENT PAGES USF s heralded freshmen John Egbunu and Chris Perry have been impressive so far this season but have rarely been on target at the same time. Only four times has the duo scored in double figures during the same game... OSU, FGCU, Santa Clara and Rutgers TOUGH STRETCH The Bulls played No. 19 Cincinnati on Jan. 18, No. 12 Louisville on Jan. 22 and at No. 23 Memphis on Jan. 26. It was the first time since the season that the Bulls will play three straight ranked teams. Then USF lost to No. 8 Notre Dame (2/12/11), at No. 4 Pittsburgh (2/16/11) and No. 9 Georgetown (2/19/11). Collins said he s committed to finishing his career at USF and is 100 percent behind coach Heath. He doesn t know when he will return, but doesn t want to go out there at 50 percent. Collins is suffering from complications of surgery over the summer to remove an inflamed bursa sack in his left knee. The knee is still swollen and painful. COACH S KID DEBUTS With doubts of whether or not Anthony Collins will return this season, head coach Stan Heath decided to not redshirt his son, Josh, as the freshman made his collegiate debut on Jan. 9 at Temple. He scored two points, five assists and zero turnovers in 19 minutes of play while mainly playing point guard. Josh is one of 20 NCAA Division I men s basketball players who are coached by their father. CLOSE CALLS In December, USF won three consecutive games by two points with a win at George Mason, a win over Alabama and a double-overtime win against FGCU. It was the first time that USF had won three consecutive games by two points or fewer since the season when the Bulls defeated Georgia State on Jan. 4, Jacksonville on Jan. 7 and Maine on Jan. 12. USF then defeated Florida A&M on Dec. 19. It was the first time that USF had won four consecutive games by one possession since the latter half of the season. Then the Bulls defeated New Orleans on Feb. 14, Jacksonville in overtime on Feb. 17, Georgia State on Feb. 19 and at Charlotte on Feb. 23. NATIONAL FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Chris Perry was named the Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week by CBSSports.com on Dec. 10. The 6-8 forward from nearby Bartow averaged 14.0 points, 12.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks to help the Bulls to a couple of two-point wins over George Mason and Alabama. He started with 14 points and 11 rebounds on 5-foor-7 shooting against George Mason, then followed that up with 14 points and 14 rebounds on 6-for-10 shooting against Alabama. WHAT A COMEBACK USF trailed by 17 points, with 12:19 remaining, its largest deficit of the game and led by five points, with 4:57 to play before winning at George Mason on a Corey Allen Jr. fadeway 10-footer along the baseline with 2.5 seconds remaining. The result was announced at halftime of the Capitol One Bowl on Jan. 1 between Wisconsin and South Carolina. The contest, which occurred during the football season, had fans click vote now to earn a point, complete weekly 25-point challenges or upload photos or videos of themselves doing a cheer in public to accumulate points for their mascot. USF received a $20,000 scholarship toward its mascot program. SIGNEE TROY HOLSTON Top 150 recruit Troy Holston signed a national letter of intent during the early signing period and will join the University of South Florida next season. The 6-feet-4-inch 187-pound shooting guard from Tampa chose his hometown school over offers from approximately 40 others including Miami (FL), Memphis, Marquette, Kansas State and Alabama. Holston, who gave a verbal commitment on Aug. 7, averaged 13.6 points while leading Oldsmar Christian to a 24-4 record last season. He was rated a three-star recruit by Scout, Rivals and ESPN. Holston was ranked the 26th best shooting guard prospect by Scout and an overall ranking of 140. NICE DEBUT Two of USF s most heralded recruits in freshmen John Egbunu and Chris Perry had solid collegiate debuts in the Bulls season-opening win over Tennessee Tech. Egbunu finished with seven points, seven rebounds and two blocks in 19 minutes of play. SUN DOME Opened in December 1980, the 30-year old Sun Dome Arena has served as the home venue and facility for the USF men s and women s basketball teams. The multi-purpose venue also has hosted an abundance and variety of other events both internal and external to USF including, but not limited to, commencements, concerts, sports and entertainment events, consumer shows, religious services, conventions, ethnic festivals, rodeos, wrestling, youth sports camps, gymnastics and cheerleading competitions, lectures, and political rallies among other corporate, community and USF events. The project included the creation of a hospitality and viewing club area along the north sideline immediately placed above the lower bowl seating area anticipated for a capacity of ~ patrons depending on configuration and event type. Additionally, the project provided for 10 loge boxes with a total capacity of ~60 seats to be sold by the USF Athletics Department. Basketball loge box holders have the first right of refusal to purchase tickets to other external events (e.g. concerts). The project, which was completed in May 2012, is anticipated to extend the useful life of the Arena for a 30-year time 9
